Tried this sandwich shop around GMU during my son's graduation. I split a combination sandwich and a summer roll with my wife. The best bread is still at BM Oi in my opinion. Banh Mi Ong however has really delicious pickle vegetable which compliments the rest of the sandwich. The summer rolls are ok but a bit expensive. The layout of the restaurant results in very few seatings. Might need some luck to find seating. read more

Decent banh mi- there are better places (banh mi DC), but in a pinch this will do. It's a small shop tucked inside of University mall adjacent to the Thai restaurant. Decent amount of seating both indoor and outdoor. Staff is friendly. I tried the dac biet (combo) with extra pickled vegetables. Pickled veg was super sweet/ needs a little more vinegar or something. Their combo says it comes with jambon, Vietnamese ham, and pork roll- I don't know which of these ingredients is head cheese but it definitely had head cheese. I don't like the gelatinous texture of head cheese so I asked for them to not put that on. It also comes with the usual Vietnamese mayo/pate, as well as a drizzle of some sort of chili sauce. The sauce didn't deter from taste. The bread was super hard and not in a good way. It softened after a quick nuke in the microwave. Overall, decent, I'd come back again, but not the best banh mi. read more

It seems everywhere you look in NOVA, there is a new Viet style banh mi shop opening; which is always a good thing. As of this review, Banh Mi Ong Beo has been in operation for 6-ish months. And while there are many positives about this place, operational kinks need to be smoothed out. Located in the University Mall across from George Mason, BMOB (should've arranged the letters to create the "BOMB" acroynm), is in a great location. I'm here often enough to catch a flick at the movie theatre or as in this instance, I was attending a conference at GMU. After the meeting, Yelp popped up this new banh mi place to check out. The interior is decorated tastefully and creates an inviting space to hang out. Counter seating and semi-uncomfortable backless chairs line the front windows, while the rest of the shop has more traditional tables and chairs, including a cozy couch area with an electric fireplace. Colorful lanterns and Viet style artwork also adorn the walls and ceilings. As is my penchant, I ordered the Dac Biet (or combo) as this is the benchmark by which any good banh mi place is measured by. The sando was ready in about 5 min, and I wanted to enjoy it fresh at the restaurant. On first inspection, I could feel it had good weight to it and it was filled with an appropriate portion of meats and veggies. While I thought the sammich was good, my tasting notes were: * Bread - Not sure if they bake bread on premises, but it didn't taste "fresh." The exterior was crunchy (correct) but the interior was too dry. But I get it; the place is still new so they don't want to order or bake too much bread to keep food waste down. * Pickled Veggies - One of the hallmarks of a banh mi sando, are the pickled carrots and daikon radish. IMHO, these were waaay too sweet. I liked that the vinegar flavor wasn't overpowering, but tamp down on the sugar. Also, I thought the veggies weren't drained properly so the bread got soggy when it was compressed. I would suggest using less liquid when storing the veggies on the prep table. Again, as this place gets busier, I don't see this being an issue. I didn't try any of the drinks, but did notice a few GMU students wandering in to get an order of the egg coffee and cafe su da. When judging a banh mi shop, the ultimate factor for me is whether the place prevents me from having to drive to either DC Banh Mi (my preferred destination) or Eden Center where there are a plethora of options. As of now, Banh Mi Ong Beo does not meet that criteria; especially at $9-$10 a sandwhich which is on the higher price point compared to other shops. But I'll check back in a few months to see if my opinion has changed. read more

Staff is friendly immediately upon walking in! I ordered the number one: Bac Diet (combination) which is always my go to when getting a bahn mi. I enjoyed the sauce & flavor of this sandwich. The Dikons were abundant and flavorful which is my favorite topping of a bahn mi. I however did not enjoy the bread. It was not flakey and a bit tough to chew however I think if you air fry this back up it would be amazing! There's plenty of indoor seating for those that want to dine in & the interior was decor beautiful! read more

I really wanted to like this shop but there is a lot of never upon. First signage. There are poster boards in the common area pointing you to the shop but the store has no actual signage except a small neon sign in the window. Then there's training. The staff member was trying very hard but apologizing due to the many many mistakes. First he asked if folks wanted their receipts. Most people said no. So then no one knew their order number. Then, everyone ordered using a number of the sandwich item and their coffee but then the sandwhich maker only knew the sandwhich made. There was about of confusion. The cashier got my order wrong and added another coffee. No big deal. How's the food? The sandwiches were fine but the bread wasn't as good as fresh baguettes. They were fluffy and crispy but not the normal Vietnamese baguettes. The pickled veggies weren't pickled really. They were sweet. I got the special and the pork bbq. There was plenty of meat but the meat was bland. The pork loaf was super airy but again bland. How's the coffee? That was the superstar. Egg coffee and regular cafe sua da was phenomenal. The staff was super friendly and sweet. I asked her for her recommendations and stuff. In the end, I wanted to try their specialty items. I ordered both. It decent. I've had it at other places where I can compare it to. It doesn't stand out too much in my opinion. I wasn't a fan of their Vietnamese Ice Coffee. It was too bitter for me. Next time, I want to come back to try their banh mi. The space was nice and clean when going in and eating. It's a place worth going back for a nice chill vibe while eating casually. read more

This spot is exactly what I hadn't realized the Burke/Fairfax area has been missing! Staff was really nice and food was great! Got the combo with the meatball sandwich and a Thai tea. Bread was super fresh, crisp on the outside but super soft and chewy interior. Also grabbed a bag of day old bread for $1.50 to bring home. So excited to know I can get a good banh mi without having to drive out to Falls Church or further. Would love it if they added springrolls and shrimp chips. I was too cold to try any of the desserts, but will def try next time! read more

Stopped in for the first time today and ordered the #4. While I took my sandwich to go, there are indoor and outdoor seating options. The meatballs were cooked perfectly and seasoned well, and there was a nice ratio of bread to meatballs to vegetables. I'm looking forward to trying more of their sandwiches and drinks in the future. The sandwiches are pretty good but I would love more flavor and more signature taste, for me anywhere I try out sandwiches I would choose Combinations and Grilled Pork, I love those two and you guys did a good job on that, if you can make the sandwiches better I believe your business will prosper. For the customer service and the speed making drinks and food, I can't complain. The decoration and the view is nice, good to enjoy a sandwich or if you want study fast before an exam. Banh Mi is perfectly average and there are better options in the DMV. Bread Texture is okay but I think they use too much dough conditioner which leads to a texture that is spongy versus having a balance of softness with gluten development. It's convenient if you live in the Fairfax/Burke area for a quick fix but nothing to write home about. read more

Food fine. The pork sandwich tasted pretty good. While the pork was cooked (sadly pre-cooked) the color looked raw which is not appetizing. The people handling my food were taking out trash from the front of the store and I don't think anyone washed their hands. read more
