They also offer other baked goods as well (muffins, scones, etc.). If you live in the area and plan on being a regular, I suggest you get on their email list so you are aware of their offerings as they are updated periodically and seasonally. At the top of our list for us is the Apple Scrapple. A cinnamon bread with a sweet coating on top. Yum! However, the very best option is their seasonal King Cake. Wow! We have very fond memories of this Great Harvest Bread Company location as one of the first employers of both of our now adult daughters, roughly two decades ago. Loving their breads and sweets, and having heard that one of her friends worked there part-time, my then high school-aged daughter went in every few days pestering the manager Rene Altamirano until he gave her a job. It turned out to be a great experience. Rene was a true mentor, teaching not only business-related skills but also leading by example in supporting local charities and making donations to assist the food insecure in the community. Our daughters always visited Great Harvest for bakery treats, and to visit Rene, when they came home from college. It is with great sadness that I share that Rene, who was the former manager of Great Harvest in Vienna for over 20 years, passed away on February 25, 2026. read more

I think the prices are pretty terrible but I've still been going back every other week. The pepperoni roll is awesome. I heat it in the oven with a little olive oil. I've also had various scones and other baked goods. Recently the red white and blue scone was a big hit as was the apple scrapple bread pudding. It's a cozy shop with a nice selection of baked goods with plenty of loaves of bread, muffins, scones, sweet and savory bars, cheese sticks, cookies, etc. Love the daily rotating menu, there's always something new to try! Some of the pastries are fresher than others, be sure to ask the date the baked good was made. I've picked up muffins in the display case and they were very stale. The breads have a 2 day rule and made very other day. Tuscan Herb Focaccia (5/5) - Hands-down my favorite! The scrumptious fluffy bread is bursting with flavor from the herbs. The bread is surprisingly not oily and perfect to cut into slices or use it in a panini sandwich. I can easily devour 1/2 loaf in just 1 day! Sadly, it hasn't been on the menu for a few years, please bring it back! Apple Scrapple (5/5) - Perfect for my sweet tooth, great for breakfast or dessert! Reminds me of Aunty Annie's cinnamon sugar pretzel. The dense fluffy brioche like bread with chunks of apples, cinnamon sugar, and topped with brown sugar is divine. With melted butter, the apple scrapple is heavenly! Ciabatta Rolls (5/5) - The airy fluffy rolls are scrumptious, perfect with a little bit of butter or in a sandwich. While I was disappointed that the ciabatta loaves were sold out, the 4 pack of rolls didn't disappoint! Gives me a good reason to drive to Vienna on Tuesdays! High Fiber Bread (3/5) - Not my favorite, quite dense and underbaked. Butter made the bread taste better! After a couple of slices, I threw in the towel on the loaf. Cheese Stick (5/5) - The perfect long breadstick smothered in cheese, even better when warmed up! Savannah Peach & Blueberry Bar (5/5) - The brown sugar bar loaded with chunks of peaches and blueberries with shredded coconut was divine. All the ingredients blended well together. Perfect sweet treat, will pick it up with my focaccia loaf on Thursdays! Blueberry Streusel Bars (5/5) - They are very moist and flavorful, made fresh the day of. My family devoured the box of 3 streusel bars in a few days. Turtle Brownie (4/5) - The nutty chocolate brownie topped with chocolate chips, pecans, and walnuts was fun to try, but not particularly memorable. It was a bit stale at the end of the night. Apple Cinnamon Muffin (4/5) - The brown sugar and apple cinnamon blend well together, the muffin was a bit stale in the evening. Pumpkin Muffin (1/5) - While the muffin looked promising in the display case, it was very dry and stale. Chocolate Chip Blondie (3/5) - Not my favorite, I really wanted to love the goey bar. There was an overload of butterscotch, walnuts and hodgepodge of ingredients. There was too much going on to enjoy the bar. I've been trying sourdough loaf's from every local bakery I can find. Soon as I stepped foot in this place I felt a weird unpleasant energy. The kind where you dont feel any love is being put in an establement. Not saying that there isn't I just didn't feel it. I came in a couple hrs after open and the shelves were very bare. Staff was stocking shelves saying they need more time. I always test a place by their sourdough so I grabbed a loaf of I believe it was a rustic loaf. Turned out to be the most unpleasant one I've had this year. Had zero sour/fermented flavor, bland as can be, the texture was uneven. While I prefer a hard crunchy exterior, this was a like a white bread loaf you get at a grocery store. The center was crumbly when slicing, towards the bottom was gummy, did not taste good fresh. Toasted, it wanted to crack like a cracker due to being dry. A third way through the loaf I don't want to finish it. I respect all the hard work that goes into baking, asi know it's labor intensive. Not everyone is going to connect with you and your products. My intuition didn't vibe the moment I walked in, which translated into the product being subpar. I feel blessed to have tried it. If you're in the area give them a try for yourself. read more

I called Tuesday and paid in advance for 3 boxes of Blarney scones, the last for the year. Yes I love them so much that I freeze them to savor over the rest of the year. Only to arrive on Friday afternoon--my specified pickup--and find my order had mistakenly been filed under Saturday. No boxes set aside for me, and unlike last Saturday, no plans to make more tomorrow. Massive fail, Vienna branch. Now I know I cannot trust advance orders and will have to call not only four days in advance but the day before and maybe that morning too. Now you all have been warned too, if you even want to try for a special order. Great Harvest is known to grind spring wheat kernels on a daily basis to make their whole wheat flour, so you know you're getting fresh-baked breads that's literally baked and crafted from scratch! Items that they offer include Honey Whole Wheat, Orange Cranberry, Sunflower Crunch, Focaccia, Tuscan Herb, etc. They also have sweets, such as cookies, scones, muffins, and tea loaves. I called ahead and placed an order for their Pepperoni Rolls; they're in a pyramid with the locations in Herndon and Ashburn, so I was really happy that this location still had some available! I also saw some cheese sticks by the cashier, so I picked some of them up, too! I recently fell in love with their White Chocolate Cherry bread - this was literally heaven in a bite! I stumbled upon this place after visiting the sandwich shop nearby. This was definitely a great find. The place has baked goods made in Herndon then trucked to their locations. I got cinnamon chocolate chip and blueberry scones. One of the best scones I have had in the DMV area. Also had to try the cinnamon rolls and those were fantastic as well. As a fan of great harvest in the past, I used to try all of their different breads, jams, desserts, etc. After changing my diet however, I now see that they don't offer much in terms of vegan (dairy free, egg wash free, honey free options). The Herndon store said their white bread is vegan, while the Vienna store says it has honey. So rules that out, either that or the staff in different stores are not well informed of the ingredients. The only option I could find was the sourdough which is hard, dry, and not great tasting. It's so dense and hard that I could throw it at someone and knock them out. For a store that prides itself on milling it's own wheat and making all these great in house goodies, I would expect that they step up into the current times and offer more vegan options. If they do, I'll be happy to be their customer but until then I'll have to find other places. read more

I happened to be parked on the street when I was drawn in by the alluring smell of baked goods. I think it says a lot when the customers are more ready to praise their goods than their seasonal workers are. A lot of local kids came through during my evening visit for a sample slice, and I milled around the table for a good 10 minutes just because I was carved such a generous tasting portion from each loaf. Though they were out of apple scrapple on the racks, I tried a cut of it once the fellow patron mentioned it was his favorite (a worker confirmed that it was one of the most popular loaves). The chunks of apple keep it from being boring. Eggnog loaf smelled and tasted of its moniker, though the powdered sugar on top seemed excessive. Orange cranberry was okay, somewhat dense, not too fruitcakey. Raisin cinnamon walnut tasted almost generic, but certainly plush. The blackberry jam they sell in-store elevated the fun factor of the plainer slices. Pumpkin spice tea loaf with chocolate chips was moist but way too sweet so I ended up buying one sans chips, plus some of their cashew/raisin groovy granola. The latter has proven useful for those mornings where I'm too hurried to fix a proper breakfast. Hopefully I'll find my way back before they cycle the Kentucky bourbon bread off the menu. read more

Do you love bread? I mean really the only people who don't love bread are the ones who have a problem with gluten. Anyway, my husband and I came in to find a good bread to go with our dinner for the evening. We spoke with one of the employees and he led us to the sampling table. We tried honey whole wheat and two other breads. I have to mention the samples they give out are basically whole bread slices. So be prepared for that. Anyway, we left with the sunflower crunch and one cheese stick. My husband was concerned with having too much bread for just the two of us to eat. I reminded him that we can freeze the excess bread. You do need to know that they bake certain breads within season and breads do sell out. Where have the apples gone in the Apple Scrapple? I'm super disappointed. 18 years ago when we first started purchasing apple scrapple here, there was a bounty of apples within the bread. The ratio of apples to bread has reduced significantly over the years. If Harvest Bread returns to a more proportional balance of apples to the bread like before, I'll buy it again. In the meanwhile there are copy cat recipes online that I'll try. I'm sorry to post a negative review - this review is strictly regarding the apple scrapple. Our bread was fine, and the banana-nut chocolate chip bread was decent, but the scones were way over mixed and as a result were chewy instead of flaky. I'll probably stick to Cenan's instead, but Great Harvest is fine if you're walking down Church St and want to pop in and see what they've got. read more

Maybe we ordered the wrong things here. The baked goods were . . . OK. This is a cute, local store with a wide variety of baked goods (though you should check in advance to see which items are available on which day). The actual space is pretty small, though. We ordered six scones and some large cookies. The scones were awfully pricey, though nicely crumbly and dense. The cookies weren't anything to write home about - they were buttery and thin - not particularly crispy, nor at all chewy. They were replete with chocolate chips, but the chocolate did seem to be of super high quality. Honestly, nailing a cookie isn't rocket science - for $1.50 each, I'd skip 'em and get your fix elsewhere. The cookies that you might make at home from a box, or grab from a chain like Potbelly or Mrs. Fields, are much better. I'll try this place again, though, but for now, it's not at the top of my list. read more

Having overheard my friends mention Great Harvest Bread off Church St. the other day, I decided to put on my Explorer hat and check this place out. Great Harvest shares a storefront w/ a random knick knack store... They have about 5-6 types of bread including Apple Cinnamon, Honey Wheat, Flax Seed, etc... and offer very generous samples of it w/ jam. Their bread is very dense and soft but didn't exactly offer the oomph that I was looking for. However, I ended up buying a loaf since I felt obligated after receiving a sample. Having been to another location of this bakery, I knew what to expect in terms of (high) prices and offerings. The staff here is slightly better than what I had experienced before in that they weren't as awkward and were more friendly. We were greeted with free slices of bread which were quite tasty. We ended up buying the cranberry bread; it was the best option that day (Saturday). We also got the red, white, and blue bar which was quite delicious! You could taste all of the individual ingredients. Bottom line: I will only come back to this location if I am in the area already. These girls were really inviting as we walked in. They were super sweet, and straight away encouraged us to try some of their baked goods. After trying their pumpkin, chocolate chip loaf, we couldn't resist taking one away with us. They also packed us a plastic knife, so we could have some along our trip. So cute. I walked in and was immediately offered a more than generous, sample slice of one of their many breads with fresh butter and/or jam by a friendly lady on their staff. I walked out with a fresh loaf of Challah. Ahh, throw carb reducing to the wind.... wishing I had bought more bread because it was delicious! The loaf cost me $6 which initially seemed a little pricey to me but unfamiliar with fresh bread costs. When I got a second (inferior) loaf from the bakery at Giant's up the street, that cost $5 so it wasnt really too bad. Note: they only carry soft style breads here- no crusty breads. read more

They will cut you a slice or two for tasting, and let me tell you, the sample size is a VERY large slice of bread. If you are looking to buy a loaf to eat, then you will likely not be hungry after the large tasting! I ended up getting the Guiness and Gouda bread. It was amazing, and it has huge chunks of gouda in it. They have a listing of what breads are available each day of the week on their website. Reasonably priced, awesome breads and desserts. As mentioned, the apple scrapple is delicious, but the scones are really some of the best I have ever had. The run of the mill (ha, get it?) breads usually aren't more special than from whole foods (although I really liked the challah), but their specialty stuff is great, and since they are always changing the small menu, you get to try unique items that you may not notice in a grocery store. They are friendly, the free samples are great, and it's a nice treat to stop in. I think these breads/mixes make unique presents too. I am a huge fan of fresh, hearty and REAL bread. Not mass produced chemical filled bread. We stopped in here for a loaf of whole wheat bread a few days ago, absolutely delicious! Saw they have Irish Soda bread, so we went back today for a loaf for corned beef tomorrow. It is as good as mine when I bake it. I will have to try the Herndon bakery in the future. read more

I've been going here for a long time and make favorites are the Challah (makes really good french toast!), apple scrapple, and the white. The apple scrapple had a layer of brown sugar on top and gets a little soggy after a couple days so it's best to eat it fairly quickly. The last couple years I've been sending relatives out of state a "bread box" with bread obviously and jam and cookies. The Challah definitely keeps me coming back, I only wished that they would slice the bread for you. read more

I went in yesterday and was offered a sample of a chocolate baked good. It had the consistency of cake but was sold in loaves, so i asked if it was indeed bread. The guy told me "if you think this is bread, you're foolish," without a smile. I assume he was kidding but not really the way to win me over. I've been going to Great Harvest for years, both the Vienna and Herndon location and love their breads. However as others have said the Vienna location is just a satellite location, they deliver the breads daily from Herndon. I went today because I know that they have their limited time (and absolutely delicious) Guinness and Gouda bread, however when I walked in at 10:45 a.m. There was not one single load of bread in the store. No bread. Why open in the store so early if you have no bread to sell. The lady behind the counter was really ride and said she had no idea when the bread was being delivered. I live in Haymarket so decided to wait because in past experience the delivery truck came at 11:00. Sure enough right at 11 the truck came and I got my bread. I would recommend calling this store before you come If you're coming in the morning to see if they actually have product to sell. The owners should also note that a number of people have commented on how rude the staff is and maybe make some changes. The bread itself deserves five stars though. read more

Great Harvest Bread is wonderful! The bread is just delcious, I love how they mix it up with different options different days and different months! They offer a lot of infromation in the store with menus and nutriftional information and their website is also very helpful. Their food is delicious; from scones to muffins to cookies and bread, they offer it all. Plus, there are great mixes for brownies, pancakes and cornbread on the shelf along with other great gifts such as soup, baskets, breadwarmers and jam. This was great to sent to our new neighbors as well as the teachers for holidays. Not only is the bread delicious but the staff is wonderful. There are normally different people working every time I come in but without a doubt they always attend to me right away, giving me a slice of bread or offering help on tough bread decisions. They all seem like teenagers but very mature, they flash a big smile and don't mind talking it up, unlike my sulky children. I was very pleasently surprised at the customer service, their knowledge of the bread and the store along with their people skills were very impressive.
