This was our second time visiting this Persian grocery store. The first time, we noticed the desserts were dry and not very fresh, but we thought it might have just been that day. Unfortunately, our second visit confirmed it. We bought a large amount of desserts for a party, and all of them were stale and dry. I am not sure if they are stored improperly or simply old, but the quality was very disappointing. This store is quite expensive, and with the lack of freshness and the incorrect weight (believe it), I cannot recommend it. read more

Still, YAS has served the neighbourhood well for years with its delightful goodies. The store is a bit tight and the communication can be difficult, speaking over the counter piled high with mechanize. Ordered a bunch of cookies, really only wanted an assortment of cookies - maybe a dozen or so - ended up with 2+lbs of cookies! Didn't have the heart to ask the young worker to put them back. While I rate this place 5 stars, I do want to point out some areas for improvement. First, it needs to be a little easier to discuss the pastry options and purchase. The service is very friendly and they are helpful but everyone appears really busy and you really have to hunt them down. Next, the prices are almost painful. Are all Persian markets like this now? Picked up a pistachio cake . Small 10 inch or 8 inch cake . I asked the lady if the cake was fresh . She said yes . It had four strawberries dipped in chocolate on top with pistachio dust . We had the cake after dinner . It was extremely dry and stale . Never going back there again . . Waste of $30 .00 for the cake . Plus the people are standing next to each other . Wow! What a variety of sweets! The lady owner was the sweetest and even gave us some treats when we were leaving. Amazing options of Iranian and Turkish goods which you don't find often. From fresh produce to jarred, canned. Beautiful tea sets and even a butcher with the cuts of meat you cannot find in a store! I would give 0 stars if I could. I have been coming here every year for 10 years. I came all the way from NYC. Use to love their pastries (walnut, raisin and zaboon cookies). I called before hand to make sure all pastries are available and fresh daily. The owner/lady mentioned the latter was true which I found out to be a total lie after purchasing. This place is a ripoff! Their prices are way higher than any other Persian/middle eastern stores. I paid $150 for the exact same thing that is $95 at other stores including Amazon and ... This place is so dirty, messy, and unorganized. They have a famous pastry called " Sepah Salari" that I used to get every week. Last time, there was hair inside the pastry, not in the box, it was tangled with the pastry. They sell the Dunar rice for $21 which is $19. They charge you twice for the same item. You need to check the receipt. read more

This place is stocked with pretty much everything you may need for Persian and middle eastern cooking. I give them 5 stars for selection but had to drop 2 for prices. Most of their items are extremely overpriced. I understand that the area is more expensive and that a lot of their items are imported. With that being said, I expected prices to be more comparable to Houston or Chicago or LA where there's a large Persian population. They're still high compared to these other locations. The pastries didn't appear to be fresh. There aren't any labels so if you're a first timer like I am, you won't know what's in them or where to stop. The place is pretty tight to maneuver in. Be prepared fo go around people in the aisles through another aisle and to wait to be helped. All in all I think it's perfect for Persian speaking and reading people but will be overwhelming for someone like me who knows neither. Park around back so you dot have to back out into the street. Have you ever had fresh almonds? I'm not talking about almonds from a newly opened can of nuts. I'm talking about spring almonds, these are fresh green fuzzy almonds which are only available for a few weeks each year, before the outer skin turns hard and bitter as they ripen. They are eaten raw and whole and have a translucent inner kernel resembles a mild and refreshing jelly, with an almost lychee-like texture, and a subtle hint of sweetness. You need to try them. Yas has them here now along with other exotic foreign fruits and veggies. This includes grape leaves, a vast assortment of Iranian pistachios, nuts, cucumbers, pomegranates, and sabzi (green herbs), sweet lemons (limoo shirin), all of which are reasonably priced. They have a halal case of meats with some interesting finds like lamb hooves. The shelves are stocked with dried lemons, barberries, Greek sour cherry jams, as well as an assortment of candies. The best part is they offer freshly baked breads, although you have to wait awhile to get it, and it's best to come on weekends to pick them up. I believe this place has everything middle eastern,I came here with a few American friends and as the token Persian, could not even identify half of the stuff here, which makes me a bad token Persian. I was intrigued by a little round green fruit that looked like a mini green apple, and the staff pointed out that it was an apricot and encouraged me to eat one. Despite, what just a few reviewers commented on (mentioning the staff discriminated against people who did not speak their language) I found the staff here to be friendly, and you might say that it was because I was Persian, but actually they were speaking farsi to my American friends and not to me. They had no idea I was actually the one covert Persian in the group (I may have overdone it with the blonde highlights) and they were plenty helpful to me. A couple of things to skip out on here are the yogurts, kashk (whey), and some cheeses, I found them to be a few dollars more expensive than my local Iranian grocer in Rockville. Also the hummus, skip it like the other reviews have said. I'll let you in on a secret. Persians can't make hummus to save our lives.You may be thinking we'd be good at it cause we're middle eastern and all, but it's a total misconception, you're not gonna walk into a persian kitchen and find us snacking on hummus usually. I honestly didn't eat or try hummus until I met crunchy white people who assumed I ate it all the time. There are other are the other Middle Easterners (ie. Lebanese, Isrealis) that rock at making it though. read more

I enjoyed stopping by this supermarket and bakery to discover so much different things to buy including some to take home dishes. The eggplant was delicious! They also had large toasted pistachio from Iran! Olive oil from different places. The bakery had an assortment of baked goods I had to buy! People are so helpful and informative. read more

I really like this bakery and supermarket. I mainly come here to buy baklava and other pastries and treats by weight. But I have also purchased produce and other cooking ingredients here as well. They have a huge variety of American and international food items and brands. I get that certain items can be overpriced but this is a family owned business. That's also why I mainly come here for pastries and treats by weight. They sell huge portions of them at other international stores. I just can't finished all of that alone, even if I'm not getting the bang for my buck when buying by weight. Their baklava is good. Of course not all are winners so you'll have to try different ones and see which ones are your favorite. Same goes for the baklava that are sold in boxes with different varieties. They are usually friendly and helpful to me, so that keeps me coming back! read more

Good variety and decent baked goods but very expensive compared to other Persian groceries. Very crowded and also quite dirty in tight spots with visible dust/rust on foods. Unfortunately, I will not return after my last trip - I saw two rats scurry under the heap of trash next to the store in the back parking. Absolutely disgusting! I was appalled! I'm not sure why the town of Vienna has yet to fine them...it's been there for months! Perhaps the owner should pack the trash up in her Bentley SUV and be a responsible merchant. I've come here a handful of times, usually after eating at Rose Kabob, to order their pastries. Prices are by the pound, $10/lb. I know it sounds expensive but you actually get quite a lot. The baklava, IMO, isn't the best, dry, if you ask me. I've asked the workers what they recommend and they haven't failed me in their suggestions. Interestingly enough, they never suggest the baklava which is what a couple of the Yelpers have raved about. Skip the hummus. It doesn't have that garlic-lemon kick I'm looking for. read more

I started coming here recently, once I discovered that they carry coals and shisha, and I am quite impressed with their selection! I have not yet tried any of their pastries but I know one of these days I will cave! They have a wide variety of breads and meats as well and of course an amazing display of pastries, half of which I am sure I couldn't pronounce ;) Their customer service has been friendly both visits (I was helped by a middle-aged woman the first time and she was very polite, and a younger woman the second visit, also polite and friendly). The parking is limited (they have a small lot in the back and maybe 4ish spaces in the front) so you have to be careful but there's not a lot of parking on Church Street in general! They have a diverse selection of shisha flavors and their prices are relatively moderate (I suppose the shisha is a little on the pricey side- $3.99 for the small size pictured but that is most likely since it's an imported item). Great Persian grocery store/mart. Has all the Persian essentials needed for Persian cuisine! I can count on her to have what Persian goodies I'm looking for that you just can't find at a regular grocery store. Wonderful owner who always goes above and beyond and asks about my family every time. She did a big pastry order for my Persian wedding and I'm so grateful! Have been going there for several years as it is one of the few places that offers Iranian sweets in the area. I always find the prices to be too high and the employees to be not very nice, only giving their time and attention to their few regular customers. I traveled 6 hours the other day and one of my stops was Yas to pick up some sweets for my stay. The cream within the pastries was sour and tasted horrid. It was so bad I had to spit it out. Same with the rollet. I am shocked that I not only paid so much money for the pastries, but that they were old, stale, and the cream was rancid. Save your time and money, go to a regular market/grocery store down the street, where I'm sure you won't encounter what I did. If I could give negative stars for this review I would, but sadly one is the lowest on Yelp. read more

I came here after a HH dinner with two friends at Alegria. I'm always interested in trying new bakeries, so I was very excited to check out Yas. Upon first entering, any foodie would be enticed by the huge display case filled with numerous sweets and treats, along with this isles and isles of ethnic groceries. If you're interested in unique foods, Yas is like a playground. So, why the 2 stars? The number one reason was the service. I have to say that I felt discriminated against when I was passed over by the two people behind the counter, so they could help the others in line that spoke their same language. Not cool. My money is just as good as theirs. The next reason is the quality of the desserts. I purchased a large assortment and frankly only liked one of the shortbread-like cookie. The others were overwhelming sweet, and the (what I believe to be) awamat had a very strong oil taste to it; a sign of old fry oil. Totally disappointing... My advice, if you like ethnic groceries, Yas is a decent one. That being said, you can probably find better service and pastries elsewhere, so don't waste your time or money. read more
