There are some projects that are larger, which require professionals. But dammit, some things I should be able to do myself, even if I lack the knowledge or the tools. But going to the big box home stores fills me with a sense of dread. They are overwhelmingly large, it's hard to find anyone who can help you, and the whole experience leaves me drained, dizzy, and nauseated. So I had what I considered a fairly clever idea. Why don't I just call the small, local, neighborhood hardware store, and see if they can help me solve my minor home repair and maintenance challenges? I'll confess that I called another store first before reaching out to Jack's. But it was at Jack's where I found the help, patience, and expertise that I so desperately needed! Project number one was removing the gunk from between brick pavers on my patio, filling them with silicone sand, and other spring yard maintenance. I had no tools beyond the phone in my hand. But Dan, on the other end of the line, walked me through the tools and equipment I would need. He told me the prices, took my order and payment over the phone, and had everything ready for a semi-contactless pick up! That went so well, I returned for project number two, replacing the window well covers that had cracked. Now I am the proud owner of my very first ratchet set! At least, I think that's what it was called. I thought I was going to need some power tool to do the job, and was prepared to drop a lot of money, but I walked out with a bill of about $30... and a Twinkie. Don't judge. It was for my daughter. Needless to say, I have no intention of ever setting foot again in one of those big box home stores. I have Jack's, and it's fantastic!

Mike always has just the fix I need and he goes the extra mile to make sure I'm happy with the service. I mentioned to him that I don't know why I don't stop there first before wasting my time at other places but that's all changed since time is money and as a matter of fact, I save money there too. They always have a sale going on and his prices are highly competitive on items that are not on sale. On my latest visit, I had a 75 year old door lock that wouldn't unlock once you locked it. I thought the skeleton key (yes, skeleton key!) was the wrong type of key but Mike was convinced he could make it work with the key I had. I was very skeptical and sure I knew what I was talking about even willing to buy another type of key to open it. He took the lock in the back, returned a very tense 15 minutes later and voila(!) the lock worked perfected with the key I had. I was impressed that he took the time to get it working without trying to sell me something different instead. Actually, he did offer a better lock but I didn't want to have to change all my locks, so worked with what I had without pressing me otherwise. Blackrock and Vanguard are the big investors. Specifically: La-Z-Boy struggles to sell pillows. I am down-sizing to my retirement condo. I am replacing most of my furniture. After this experience, I will not spend another thin dime at any La-Z-Boy store. We were trying to buy five (5) decorative pillows for $15 ea and a $20 footstool. - Thirty-two (32) minutes - Four (4) sales reps involved at various points The La-Z-Boy whiz bangs at the Head Shed have deployed a goofball tablet-based system to decelerate the sales process and crater the customer experience. Luckily, there is a word for this! "Enshittification" was Word of Year for 2024: the misapplication or decline of technology for the benefit of business/shareholders at the expense of the user/customer experience. La-Z-Boy cannot figure out how-to sell pillows and footstools. Nor could the app correctly total what should have been: (($15*5)+$20)*1.06 = $100.70 It took me less than 10 seconds to correctly total the amount. I offered cash. Exact change. Let me leave, puhleeze. Cash was refused because ... paperwork! Paperwork must be signed! Scanners and barcodes made their debut for retail on June 26, 1974 - nearly fifty-four (count'm 54) years ago. La-Z-Boy has barcodes, but no scanners. Everything must be manually entered, lookups fail, errors corrected ... lather, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat ... for each item. Whoever the heck is responsible for this (cough) business process ... where did I leave my VooDoo doll? There is also a one page T&C document that I was expected to sign without reading. Two sales reps actually said, "Just sign it. You don't need to read it" and became frustrated when I insisted on reading it, and were unhappy that I took a pic of it. Buy furniture? Spend $10k+. Gawd knows how they might screw-up a warranty claim. Actually; after reading the warranty claim reviews ... I think I dodged a bullet.
