Unfailingly, when you walk into Carpenter's, you will be greeted by the cashier. Chances are good you will be asked if you need help finding something before you start looking for it, and if you can't find something, it's easy to flag someone down to ask where it is. Good service is the norm here, though sometimes getting checked out at the rental counter can take a while, especially if you go on a busy Saturday in spring or summer. Though the store isn't large, you can find most common tools, fasteners, plumbing/electrical/painting supplies, garden needs, as well as a surprisingly large selection of kitchen goods--pots/pans, glassware, utensils, etc. Prices on most items run a little higher than at big-box stores, but I don't mind paying them since Carpenter's saves me the trouble of driving to a big box store. read more

I usually have a good experience at Carpenter Brothers, but my last experience really let me down. I called in on Monday, August 25 at 5:31pm and asked for rentals to reserve a Uhaul truck for 8am to 8pm. The person said I was all set. When came in on Friday, August 29 at 8:10am, the person who was staffing the rental desk said he couldn't find any record of my reservation. Furthermore, there weren't any trucks left that day. I was very disappointed because I was going to let down two people who were depending on me that day to help them move their things. I spoke to the manager, Ryan, and he just seem callous and indifferent to the whole situation. Ryan seemed inexperience in customer service; he didn't know how to react and what to do to ameliorate the situation. Furthermore, it felt like he was insinuating that it was my fault for not getting a confirmation number, when all I was doing was trusting his staff. He didn't offer a way to make up for the oversight, or offer take a number to investigate and let me know what happened. I just got a phone number to call Uhaul to see if there are any other trucks in the area. He only apologized when really it was too late. Beware when renting a Uhaul truck there, get a confirmation number! read more

I really like this store; it's probably my favorite business in Ann Arbor. The staff are all incredibly kind and helpful. They know the location of almost every item by memory, and if not then they quickly find someone to help you. The owner is very knowledgeable and takes pride in his business. They've stayed open during the pandemic, and responded very well. Everyone wears masks, and the store is kept very clean. But even before the pandemic, I was very impressed with how things are run here. They hire many young students, and they train and pay them well. They offer many services to the community, including tool rental and uhaul rental. In summary, Carpenter Brothers is the quintessential American small business, and I choose to shop here whenever I can. read more

This is a unique locally owned hardware store, tucked in the back of a strip mall on Plymouth Road. I'd actually been to several of the shops in the front of the mall and didn't realize the Wine Seller and this hardware store were out back until recently. Carpenter Bros. has a good if eccentric selection. They have lawnmowers, paints, birdseed and birdhouses, and all the tools and parts you'd expect. I didn't expect them to have kitchen goods at a hardware store, but they had two aisles of pots, pans, whisks, corkscrews, and other assorted kitchen gadgets, all in the middle-to-high quality range. Went into this store and asked cashier if I could use a $10 off $50 coupon that had no date. She said yes. I proceeded to shop for $50 of stuff. When I got to register I was told I couldn't use the coupon. The cashier actually denied telling me that I could. The manager said there was nothing he could do. I put my things down and was walking out when the manager suddenly decided he could honor the coupon if it meant losing my business. Seriously??? I will NEVER step foot in this store again. Treat your customers right and fire your lying cashier. read more

My husband loves this place because of their great selection, helpful staff, and close location to our apartment. Anything you need for the home or garden is here and the "hometown" feel is pretty amazing- a great refresher from some other stores in town. I think Carpenter Brothers is just as good as Stadium Hardware. They have everything you expect a hardware store to have, plus a lot of rentals in the back room. They have a workshop in the back where they can repair anything with a small gas engine. Some people say that the employees are surly, but I consider that part of the charm. The paint from this store is not bad. It's a Do It Best store, but instead of selling the regular DIB paint, they have an off-brand that is manufactured by Sherwin Williams; it says so in teeny print on the label. I've never noticed any difference in quality, but the SW paint at the DIB store is a about $16 per gallon, whereas paint at the Sherwin-Williams store costs $30 per gallon. The DIB store in Milan, right downtown, also carries Sherwill-Williams off-label paint; I don't know of any other hardwares that have it, including other DIB stores. read more

The people are here are so helpful in finding what ever I need. I particularly like that they will bring stuff out to your car, so you can have a no contact purchase. Not only is Carpenter Bros. locally owned, the owner works there. This is a great hardware store that takes care of the Northeast side of town. And they have the only rental center on the Northeast side since the other rental center switched to Penske trucks. Carpenter Bros. has an excellent range of equipment, parts, and supplies, though Stadium Hardware on the West side of town has a greater depth of parts and equipment. So 90% of the time, Carpenter Bros. has what you're looking for, at a great price, and with the service to help you find it fast. For the remaining obscure 10%, you may have to head across town and find it on your own at Stadium. And their workshop is excellent. I've had keys made, mower engines fixed, window screens replaced, glass custom cut, special orders, and lots of other work done there. read more

I like Lowe's for lumber and paint but for the simple hardware stuff, as well as the odd repair, I go to Carpenter Brothers. It's close and friendly. They cut glass, fix stuff, give good advice, and have every imaginable size of bolt, nail, screw, etc. It's a local business, too, which helps to keep my neighborhood healthy. read more

Great hardware store like I remember from my youth.

Nothing better than the personalized service provided by this business. They answer questions patiently and helpfully even for those of us with little knowledge of gardening and hardware. They also seem to have just what I am looking for when the large box chains either do not understand what I want or really don't carry it, so found all the gardening supplies I was looking for. Also, the prices were the same as I had seen online (or better) on large items I needed: replacements for garbage disposal and kitchen sink faucet. Best of all, the person helping me just carried everything out to my car without even asking if I needed help. read more

That "friendly neighborhood store" (Carpenters) has a new unfriendly policy of not accepting returns when the package of the item is opened even if you have a receipt. How would I know if the item fits or if it is in the correct length or so on and so forth without opening the package? They do give store credit but in a town like Ann Arbor where many similar stores exist (Ace Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot, Maynards and ertc.) not to mention the online retailers. They will lose a lot of business to competition. They have lost mine. read more

For the longest time I had NO CLUE there was a hardware store on the North side and made the trip all the way to Home Depot on Carpenter Rd, even if I only needed one thing. I was surprised at first how big the store was and how much they had. Need a wrench? Got it. Need a tarp to cover your floors because you're an awful painter? Got it. Yes, they're a bit on the pricier side but it's a price I will pay to avoid driving further than I have to. Oh, and customer service has always been great for me. read more

These guys are cool! I rented a cargo van to pick up a chest freezer at a (ahem) chain hardware store. Carpenters Hardware is cool! It's way bigger on the inside than you imagine, and has more stock, parts and tools than I thought, including lots of construction equipment for rental in addition to the trucks. The guys who helped me check in and out were friendly and professional. The truck was clean and in good working order. I plan to come back to this local outfit for hardware needs - they're waaaay better than the big box ! read more

This place isn't great, and certainly isn't as good as Stadium Hardware. Here's why: I've tried to buy something from this place 3 times. The first time, they not only didn't have a bolt in the size I needed, but they told me it didn't exist, despite the fact that they were able to determine what size bolt I needed from the broken one I'd brought in. (I eventually bought one at Stadium Hardware.) The second time, their price was literally 8 times worse than Amazon's. I don't mind paying a premium for a locally owned shop, but (a) this is a chain and (b) 700% markup over online retail is ridiculous. The third time, they had what I wanted for a decent price, but wouldn't accept a credit card because it was under $3. I wandered around looking for something else reasonably priced for a while before giving up. Amazon wins again, I guess. read more

Been shopping there for over 18 years, their goods and services are as advertised, with an authentic mom and pop feel. They have a level of expertise on par w any hardware store, some of the staff there have many years experience and can help w a wide array of questions. However, I have a complaimt in regards to their rental dept. Where to begin... They have a dept head named Clint, who my mom rented a chainsaw from. Disclaimer: I am not an expert at using a chainsaw but I'm not a begginer either. I returned the saw the following morning only to be greeted by good old Clint. I tell him the chain popped off at the very end, which is true, instead of fiddling with it I figured I'd let them retighten it to their specification. He then asks me after mentioning the chain if I have used a chainsaw before, in a very condescending way, my proof? He smiled as he asked me. I humbly take his jab and ask him to show me, he says, every chainsaw is the same, oh sorry Clint! He then proceeds to point out that there is dirt in the underside and goes on to say if its damaged too much, I will have to buy the saw. He then proceeds to take the saw in the back with no explanation. After standing there for 10 minutes, I'm too nice, I walk to the front and explain all of this to the cashiers. A nice lady who works there, shared my outrage which was nice, got the manager Andy to go and talk to him. Unfortunately Andy came back and did not apologize for Clints behavior. From what I gleamed by Andy's body language when he came back was that he too now wondered if I wasn't careful w the saw. Wasn't rude, just wasn't exactly vindicating either, dissapointing for sure. I understand the need to back up your employees but evidenced by your other employees reacting with familiarity to this Clint guys crap, you should have known to back up the customer. Frankly, I wonder how irreplaceable a guy with that attitude is. Or is it just the culture of Carpenter Bros. the 'this is my candy shop' MO of so many skill workers. Its dissapointing in this day and age. I can honestly say it was one of the worst business experiences I've had in years. I hope they do something to improve this. I've lived in AA my whole life and shopped there as long, they are aware of this too, to be treated that way is inexcusable. We also rented a wood chipper from Clint, who proceeded to speak to my mom as though this chipper was his personal property, weird, anyway. He then proceeds to tell my mom that it MUST be returned in 4 hours, couldn't explain that if I tried, the rentals go up to a full day... Well the chipper was delivered an HOUR late, we made SURE they clocked us at the exact minute it was dropped off, RENT AT YOUR OWN RISK. As stated in a previous post, a person attempted to rent a uhaul only to have the entire order not processed and he got attitude for his trouble. read more

A message to the owners requesting a refund has gone unanswered. We've spent hundreds of dollars at CB over the years, trying to support a local business, but no more.
