Bought a hose attachment.. worked awfully. Called the guy working a couple hours the same day about returning it. He said all I needed was my receipt and he remembered me. Then when I get there tells me I also need the tiny code that was wrapped around the hose attachment (who the hell keeps that) for the barcode that is also on the receipt I brought in.. so drove all the way back out for nothing and paid 20$ for a useless item. Wouldn't recommend.. go to Walmart or a bigger brand that isn't afraid to lose 20$ lol. read more

Came in today to my local Ace Hardware. I had a couple screens that needed to be redone. Cree was very helpful and tried to save me some money by reusing my current screen. Not sure that it's gonna work but he's going to try. I've been to this Ace Hardware many times, and they are so very helpful. You never have to look around for a sales person like some of the big box stores and they will help you out to find what you need and what works best for you. Really enjoy this store for picking up the little things. I have gotten keys and random stuff to fix a toilet here. Both times we had good customer service, the parking is right outside the door (both in front and there's a parking lot in back,) and the prices are just slightly higher than other places. I have been taking all of my lawn and garden needs to Congdon's Ace Hardware for well over the past 30 years. I have come to know the friendly staff who work there, and they are first people I call on the phone when I have some serious questions about what products work the best, especially when it comes to small household repair projects. The level of professional service they provide is second to none. Likewise, their prices are very reasonable, and I have never had any problems returning any product that didn't meet my expectations or perform properly. Moreover, Congdon's has a full-service lawn mower, and snow blower repair facility. Two years ago when my mower failed to start, I took it in and had them thoroughly examine the machine to diagnose the problem. I was debating what the mower's issues might be, and how much it would cost before crossing over the "It's just better to buy a new lawn mower, than to fix the old one" threshold. Another repair place had quoted me $75 an hour to examine the mower to find the problem, then the price of the parts, and labor on top of it. I was very happy to find out it was just a magneto that needed to replaced, and the final price out the door was only $25.00 at Congdon's. When I had an older and more environmentally friendly 22-inch reel mower in the late 1980s, the repair shop at Congdon's was always able to sharpen the blade every spring. Likewise, they were able to show me how to properly install and remove some of the most difficult blade on several lawn mowers I have purchased there over the past three decades. Believe me, there is nothing worse than slicing a finger on a blade. So if you're like a lot of people I know, and often do home improvement or repair projects, this is the place to go for all your needs. read more

I've never gone into this store and NOT come out with what I went in for. I go there instead of the big boxers whenever I can (They don't have kitchen appliances...) because I want to be sure that a great local store like this survives. Everyone is incredibly helpful, they know their business, and it's just a pleasure to shop there. You don't have to wander through endless aisles looking for someone to help you but they're already helping someone else and it will be just a few minutes.... You know the drill. I'm having the trim painted on my house this summer, and I'm going to buy my paint there, instead of at HD or Lowe's. Convenient to my workplace, I ran in on my lunch hour to grab some items we needed for a small household repair. Friendly staff, they know what they are talking about. They also had a recommend for a cheaper but more effective item. That is honesty. I appreciated the heads up, especially as a lot of these hardware type places either are no help or are less helpful to obviously clueless women like me (just a note, most women are not as clueless as I am about home repair). Not here. Readily available, patient and not in the least condescending. I will definitely be back. Congdon's is about the best you can find for a small hardware store where the staff really know what they are talking about. They're part of the ACE franchise, but they're not a huge behemoth like Home Depot or Lowe's and the service is personalized. My husband and I have been going there for years for various home and garden supplies and advice. They sharpened our lawnmower blade each spring for years until my husband bought a kit (from Congdon's) so he could do it himself. They also gave us really good advice during a recently repair to a drippy sink. My husband was convinced that it was a faulty washer. One of the employees told him it was a faulty part further down the line and sold him the replacement for two or three bucks. My husband was skeptical, but he installed the piece, and the sink hasn't dripped since then. Parking is on the street for Congdon's, but Pearl Street is usually pretty quiet, and it's not generally hard to find parking. There are a couple of public lots within a few blocks as well. read more

Outrageous charge to fix blind lady's grocery cart: Congdon's Ace Hardware 111 Pearl St Ypsilanti, MI 48197 (734) 482-2545 Since arriving in Ypsilanti in early March, my purchases at this hardware store have been small. This hardware store doesn't have everything, but I was able to obtain other things from larger retail sources. After experiencing online problems from Amazon with a faulty product, a golf bag type grocery cart on wheels that did not come with screws for assembly, I took the partially assembled cart with me by walking with my dog guiding me from my residence with the items in my backpack and my hand. I knew that with one readily available connector from the hardware store, such as a lock nut or some kind of screw or snmall bolt, the grocery cart could be made usable. The hardware store employee, a white guy, saw my new cart and told me that I could leave the cart and he would fix it for me for $20. I knew that the repair could be done with one correct screw. The screw would cost less than five dollars and probably less than two dollars. I felt that the hardware store employee was taking advantage of me as a woman and a blind person in order to pull in cash for a repair that could be done inexpensively in about three minutes. Turning to leave, I told the man exactly this. Without the correct screw that I could not see to find myself in the store and which the man was not offering to locate, the cart, which cost me $50 online, was useless to me. The man called after me that I hadn't left any contact information. The hardware store eemployee said nothing about providing the screw or about the outrageous price he suggested. The hardware store employee did not walk through the store and use his eyesight to find the correct widget to put the cart together. He did not offer to do the right thing and help. This leaves me without a suitable grocery cart, without assistance, without a way to avoid struggling with groceries and supplies. This ensures that I will be doing without. read more

Want to buy just 1 screw or a couple a bolts? You still can at Congdon's ACE Hardware in downtown Ypsilanti. They have all the old fashion bins and they treat you just as nice if you are buying 1 or 100. They even will help you AND be nice about it , even if all you know is that , " I need a thing that looks kinda like this and goes on the back of a big thing that attaches the part of a thing that looks like that .... ... do you know what I mean?" Lots of local construction businesses frequent this place and the guys will chat and shoot the bull with you as you check out. Free parking in back. This place is a gem. Great people, great advice and the prices really aren't much more expensive than the big home improvement stores that you would have to drive a lot further to get to. The convenience is worth the 10% more you might pay here on average. Unless I'm buying $200 of stuff, I usually just go here instead of driving out to Carpenter Road stores. read more

Wish I could do 5 stars. This is a small and very friendly little hardware store. Very old school. Out of maybe 10 visits nine have been great. However I took my snowblower here two winters ago for repair. I knew what part was wrong and pointed it out. Upon first use the same part popped loose. I took it back. Well we never had another snow until the next winter. I looked and saw right away the same part was off again. I take it back again. No charge for repair. So here comes this fall and I always check things to prepare for winter. Part is OFF again! I took it to another place on Carpenter road in Ann Arbor and explained it to them. They knew right away the problem. They fixed it and this year has been good. I did go back this year to Congdon and asked for the manager. I told him my story and said I knew I would get no compensation but felt I had to let him know the inconvenience I had been caused. And money because i had to pay for this twice. The blower is heavy and every time I need help to get it in car. He said sorry but that is all. I will continue to go here but not for any repairs and I told him that. I went to Congdon's this past weekend with a long, random list of items I needed for my house, and a 3-year old... the gentleman working there walked me through the entire store picking out everything on my list, explaining my options, and offering suggestions on how to best use the items. They then cut 5 keys for me. On top of that, they were completely patient and understanding, and moved quickly since I had a toddler in tow that was very interested in everyyyyything. They got almost everything you need for the house right here. You can even get keys copied. I come here when I need screws, nails, rope, even a pop from an old machine! Staff is pretty helpful and friendly. Prices on somethings are kind of high but saves you a trip to the big box. parking in back and front but you pay a meter if in front. read more
