But this is no ordinary hardware store. This is also the Michigan hobby shop and hardware store Mecca!! We found the coolest remote control micro drones, remote control cars, planes, trucks, helicopters, trains, and everything else you can imagine. There was a complete aisle of Boy Scout supplies and another for the Girl Scouts. We bought several things for homeschool in those aisles. The train aisle not only has trains and tracks but everything you need for building layouts, gardens and miniatures. They had slot cars GaLORE!! If your are an enthusiast or a collected you really need to check out all the cool slot cars. I was drooling over quite a few. Be sure to look up when you get to the hobby area. The planes are super cool!! Arts and craft items, painting and drawing items, models, puzzles, ships, planes, cars, and trains. It's a young mans heaven here!!!

Then when I get there tells me I also need the tiny code that was wrapped around the hose attachment (who the hell keeps that) for the barcode that is also on the receipt I brought in.. so drove all the way back out for nothing and paid 20$ for a useless item. Wouldn't recommend.. go to Walmart or a bigger brand that isn't afraid to lose 20$ lol.

They were not wrong, the truck they recommended is awesome. Doing additional research online after the purchase and I can't find a negative review for it. Back in 2010/11 I spent a few months managing an apartment building near here. I was in 3rd Ave…read moreHardware at least 3 or 4 days a week, and sometimes 5 or 6. A couple of times I had to make multiple trips in one day. The staff was always professional and helpful, and almost always had what I needed, which is saying a lot since I managed an old 50-unit building that needed a lot of things for a lot of problems. Sometimes I would grab the wrong thing, and it was never a problem bringing it back and exchanging it for the right thing. Sometimes my boss would get a bit behind in paying for it all, and they would gently remind me, and the ol' slumlord would send them a check from Florida. They were cool but firm about it. It seemed to be a situation they'd been through many times before. They have homey touches here - a small tv on the counter that's always showing something. A fridge with Faygo in the can. My favorite thing about 3rd Ave Hardware is the bicycle selection. In the warmer months there's a whole row chained together on the sidewalk out front. Old ten speeds, 70s 3 speeds, cruisers, mountain bikes, etc. But, wait, there's more inside! Another row between the front door and the register and still more up and down the cramped aisles! (3rd Ave Hardware could really use a more spacious locale.) The prices won't break the bank either. I just bought my second bike from there - a green mountain bike from CCM, that Canadian company that makes hockey equipment. It's a pretty sweet bike for $100. My last one was, too. It was an old 70s 3 speed with a big comfy seat and a glistening orange paint job that just looked like candy. Too bad it got ripped off. Oh well, that's life in the D. I won't pack it in, and I'm glad 3rd Ave won't either. I'm only knocking them down one star because of their paint selection. It's lousy and overpriced. Go somewhere else for paint.

Customers who had asked Kevin and his store to help support local teams, stopped shopping there. I think the final nail in the coffin were the numerous roadblocks that virtually cut off his few remaining loyal customers. We have lost something today that cannot be easily replaced.

The gentleman behind the counter helped me find what I need right away. Service like this you will not get at a big box store! The fact that this place in still in business speaks volumes to the customer service, price and selection offered. Melvindale Hardware is well organized and has just about anything you would need from hardware store.
