I filed a claim with UPS who did an investigation but failed to retrieve my item. After also contacting Lombard Hobbies, they replaced my purchased item at no cost. Their handling of this matter is greatly appreciated and I definitely will purchase from them again based not only on their quick and fair handling of my situation, but also for their prices which are lower than some of the other online hobby stores.

I have just described Desplaines Hobby Shop. What you give up with a shop like this is any discount which is the price you pay for a really good hobby shop with trains stocked in depth. What you gain is the kind of shop that you can refer friends and families to and know that they will always be treated with respect and given accurate advice and guidance on trains regardless of their level of knowledge in the hobby. I have purchased both brass and plastic from them as well as modeling supplies. Their repair service is top flight and in fact they will often tell you how you can fix your problem yourself absolutely gratis. Without a doubt this is the one and only hobby shop I patronize and would recommend it to anyone. They are a monument to the days when Chicago was full of great hobby shops like Hobby City, Al's and Chicagoland that are all gone, Des Plaines Hobby is the last great hobby shop standing

Judging by their website, I was under the impression that they were mainly trains, but they had the paint I was looking for, so I stopped in and was pleasantly surprised to see that they carried a wide selection of of other items including plastic model kits. The staff was very courteous and helpful, especially the older gentleman who brought me a shopping basket when he saw the growing number of paint bottles I was holding. As it turned out, they were having a store wide sale which meant I was able to get what I needed for a savings on what I had expected to pay when I walked in the door. This place just celebrated its one year anniversary. This place is full of amazing collectibles and they even have people come by and have little autograph signings too. Plenty of items like cards, posters, framed items and other sorts of rare collectibles. The owner was really nice and really loves the people that comes in to his establishment. He treats everybody like family and I really enjoyed that! Overall , the prices on everything are very fair and they're truly worth it. Great gifts for yourself or a surprise gift for someone else.

Even though he was willing to open them for me, I tend to buy dozens at a time and could potentially be at the register for 30 min while he opens them for me. I'm not looking for perfect customer service but there's a way to talk to people. He wasn't rude but had the personality of a rock. I'm in my 50's and don't appreciate being treated like a child. Put up signage if you don't want people to open the books. And how about a break it or buy it policy? Even though I handle the books better than most store owners, if I damage the book while examining it, I'll pay for it. You already got cameras on me so what's the problem. I won't be back. (Replying to the owner's reply: A better response would have been, "I'm sorry for the inconvenience and misunderstanding. I'll take your thoughts into consideration and strive to create a better experience for my customers. Every worker here seems to share a passion for books and the energy is infectious. I had to cut myself off, close my eyes, and slowly step away from the stacks. They also have some art and crafting supplies, paper goods, and vinyl. The prices are low and I think there might be some categories of people who qualify for discounts.

We worked with Mike to coordinate a surprise birthday party for our 5 year old who's obsessed with…read morecars. Mike was super easy to work with and pricing was very reasonable to host a 2 hour party for kids. The main track can be dialed back so that the kids won't send the cars off the track. Mike (one man team) did a great job of rotating the kids in for races and even had a separate area for those not racing to send hot wheels care down an inclined race track to pass time while they awaited their turn. Overall the event was a success. We were able to bring in pizza from next door for food. I have pretty fond memories of my dad taking my brother and I slot car racing when we were kids so it was a really cool to be able to share the same experience with my son and his friends.
