I have come here more often than I probably normally would because it's my cousin's favorite place to eat and whenever it's his choice, this is what he chooses. Wide selection that includes a good salad bar and plenty of solid Asian staples like fried rice, potstickers, a variety of stir-fry meat & veggie dishes, and plenty of other similar offerings. What sets them apart is the well-attended sushi station that is included in the buffet. I don't eat sushi so I can't review it from experience, but it always looks like they know what they're doing over there. Honestly when I'm here, I fill up on the rice and noodle dishes, and the potstickers. Those simple dishes are done right. I think the price is fair for what you get. What happened to this once great restaurant? I first started going here in 2010. It was amazing. After the phony pandemic something changed. Prices went up and quality went down. Tonight my wife got some of their To Go Buffet stuff and let me state for the record this is by far and away the worst General Tso's Chicken I have ever had. In fact after some thinking about the tiny egg rolls, it occurred to me why it tasted so awful. It was a frozen prepackaged mix. The taste of vinegar was the tell. The same crap you can buy at Costco or Sam's Club, can be bought here. The egg rolls were also prepackaged frozen crap. No thanks. I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS PLACE. For a while, I debated on eating at Great Moon Buffet considering the number of negative reviews posted. I also thought their lunch price was a bit high (although drinks are included). However, I learned they have a senior discount and so I opted to eat here today. One thing I look for in an Asian buffet is sushi. Great Moon has a decent variety of that as well as other foods. They also have a unique ice cream flavor called Ube, which I never eaten before. Initially, I didn't hear any background music until about a half hour after arriving when mellow instrumentals were playing. One disappointment were the drinks. Originally I had hot tea but it had a peculiar taste. So then I requested coffee for refills. I could tell it was the instant kind, which I don't care for either. Great Moon isn't as bad as some critics claim, but it reinforced my desire to eat at AYCE sushi restaurants where they bring the food to you. Food can be a hit and miss, depends on who is cooking, food can be really good or bland, but always loved this place. Price not bad for a buffet, for 2 people it's about $25 each. Nice variety of foods, has salad station and offers sushi. More times than not this place is great! Usually decently busy, but they seat people fast and normally can find a spot and not really wait time. Food was well stocked. Service was decent on refilling drinks. Please stop supporting Great Moon Buffet in Maplewood I'm sharing this to raise awareness after a deeply upsetting experience at this restaurant during what was supposed to be a joyful celebration. Last night, we were celebrating my niece and nephew's 9th birthday. They chose Great Moon Buffet. Despite past experiences that made us sick, we decided to give the place one more try. We had a party of 20. My family of 5 arrived first, paid, and were seated. While I stepped away to the restroom, the manager came by, checked our receipt, and moved it to the head of the table. As more guests arrived, others in our party came in, asking if we had a reservation and questioning whether we had space. Meanwhile, the birthday kids ran up to hug us, and that seemed to cause more confusion. The manager then told everyone arriving to keep their receipts visible, as he was unsure who had paid. At that point, the only two unpaid guests were the children who ran up to say hello. Then he said, twice: "If you don't like what I asked, I'll check the cameras." I called him over and calmly asked: Why speak to paying customers like this? Why treat us like we're trying to get away with something? His response: "Fine. Leave. I don't need your money." So we asked for refunds and decided to go elsewhere. As he struggled to issue the return, (maybe due to an outdated card system), I expressed my disappointment: * "This is your fault." * "You're bad at your job." * "You treated us like we were scamming you, we weren't. We have money, and this could've been resolved easily." Then he called the police and said: "This man threatened me." That part didn't even surprise me. It was just another reminder of what it's like to be a Black man in public spaces--how your presence, your voice, and your confidence can be seen as a threat. Police arrived. No threats had been made. Multiple guests were recording the entire interaction. It was a complete waste of everyone's time--including the Maplewood officers, who were respectful and professional. Once told the situation Officers told us to go ahead about our day. I left feeling disrespected, profiled, and deeply disappointed. I share this so others know what kind of service and treatment they may be supporting. Ask yourself: Who are you giving your money to? How do they treat people who look like me? The service is really good. Outside of that don't come here. The food is mediocre at best. The buffet is only 7 things with food. 1 with salad bar stuff, 2 with fruit/dessert, 1 with sushi and the rest a variety of stuff. I have eaten at buffets like this in Minnesota and California. Over the years, the food has been almost exactly the same. The Chinese entrées are good, but not great. The sushi tends to be good, and the American food tends to be very plain and bland. If you actually want to eat, healthy, you can do that here. However, you'll have to avoid most of the things regarded as comfort food. Instead, look through the offerings of the salad bar, where you will find plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. They do make some pretty good chicken dishes. Probably my favorite is the black pepper chicken. They also do a pretty good beef and broccoli. Service was good, my ice tea delivered with a smile. I had a little bit of ice cream for dessert. The texture was a little grainy. Probably sat there too long. Next time, I'll probably have the dinner buffet. If I could give six stars I would! The food was good, but the service was SPECTACULAR! We arrived with about 100 people for lunch- mix of 6th, 10th, and adults. We had a table area ready, drinks were out within 10 minutes, plates were cleared fast, cups refilled before they were half gone. On top of it- DonJee helped one of the 6th graders with a survey for our program- including reading and explaining the question. This was well beyond the scope of a Great Moon Employee. This place holds a piece of my heart. I've been to this location and also the one on South Robert Street, but this one specifically is my all time favorite buffet, but I am a little biased because this place was part of my upbringing. Whether it's just myself with my parents and siblings, or if we're dining with family, everyone always comes here and we leave with happy, full stomachs every time. Whenever I think about a favorite memory from my childhood, I always remember dining here with all my cousins, favorite aunts and uncles. Even my grandfather who lives in northern California requests to come here whenever he comes to visit. I pretty much love all the food items here. My very first plate every time we come always consists of three of my al time favorite menu items: the fried rice, the lo mein and the chicken wings. The wonton and hot and sour soups are also my favorite and I struggle with which one to get. The salad bar has a great selection, and it has always been a ritual for my youngest brother and I to eat our salads after we finish 3-4 plates of staple Chinese food. I also absolutely LOVE the green mussels. My sister and I would always take a few of their sugar donuts back to our table, fold them into our napkins and sneak them out to the car to eat on the way home. I'm not sure if they still have crab legs, but we always came on Fridays because that's when they would have them, and my dad loves seafood. The line's always long, but the wait has always been worth it. I also really enjoyed seeing the staff every time we come. It's almost like we grew up sorta knowing them because we see them so often and we had a favorite section we liked to sit at and had a few favorite servers. I made the managers aware of this and they did nothing, all they said was "that's scary I'll talk to him" and then proceeded to not talk to him and didn't do anything at all. You have your Chinese variety, salad station that randomly has cold macaroni salads, sushi, soups, desserts, there's just about anything you might be craving. I'm pretty sure I ate a bit of everything. My strategy was to just take one tiny scoop of everything and then go back and pile on only the dishes I liked. That way I wasn't too wasteful, and made sure I wouldn't miss out on a dish. I wouldn't say anything stood out and was amazing. What really brings this place down in my opinion is their pricing. During the week it's not too bad, but $15.99 on the weekend is really expensive for what you're getting here. None of the food is spectacular enough to warrant that price. So if you're craving Chinese, I suggest two options: 1. Don't come here on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. 2. Great Moon is one of those things that is really good, but not great. However, if you want a lot of different types of Chinese food and a lot of it, this will definitely do the trick. This is my favorite Chinese food buffet in Minnesota and I've tried at least 10 different buffets. They've got all the basics covered when it comes to Americanized Chinese food, they've got basic sushi, a salad bar, some comfort American foods, and a dessert bar.
