First time I've ever been to this restaurant and the last... I ordered cashew chicken. Worst tasting food I've ever had. The chicken tasted old. I don't know what the five spices are that they refer to in their name, but there is a disgusting smell on it and absolutely no flavor whatsoever. I asked for fried rice instead of white and was told it would cost me another $4, which was fine except that it was nothing in it. It was just tan rice. Wish I would have asked somebody before I went there if they had ever eaten there. The lack of business inside should have been a dead give away. read more

Being in Blaine there just are not very many Asian food options. I was up this way so I'd thought I'd stop by. How bad could it be? So I walk in, and they have a standard serving line counter but there's no food, but restaurant supplies and boxes piled high. I was a bit confused and thought they may not be open. I was greeted by a lady, and there were paper menus on the counter. So I ordered the lunch special Shrimp Lo Mein, which comes with an egg roll and fried rice for $7.50. I requested the fried rice to be served in a separate container because I wanted to save the fried rice for later, and I don't like my noodles touching my rice. Well she proceeded to start an argument over the dang take-out box, insisting that it all comes in one box. I reiterated my wishes for a separate container, and she argued some more, so I relented. The total came to $8.03, I didn't have 3 cents, and there was a change box on the counter. So I did what any normal customer would do in that situation: take $0.03 from the change box. Man did I get an Evil Glare from the lady something FIERCE! In my disbelief, I threw down a dollar into the freaking change box. So the food comes, and I informed them that they lost a customer for 13 cents. 10 cents for the takeout box she wouldn't part with, and the 3 cents out of the change box. All this before I even tasted the food!! The cook from the back came up and apologized when he overheard the conversation, and he was very nice. While this was going on she gave me another cursing stare and stormed off. Heck he should have been working the front and leave the grumpy lady to cook instead. Upon reaching my office, I opened the white box, and discovered some seriously sorry looking noodles, and "fried rice" that was just that: rice that was fried with a very small amount of soy. The egg roll looked ok, no doubt came frozen and just dropped in a fryer. Now the actual tastes were very underwhelming. No...I'm straight pissed. The Lo Mein was slightly burnt, and not in a good way. It was too salty. The "fried rice" turned out to be cooked brown rice with soy in it. I don't know which part of China they come from, but I had no idea that this was even a thing; and I am 100% full-blooded Chinese. Fried rice is supposed to have a whole lot of other things in it, not the least of which would be egg and veggies, with WHITE rice seasoned with soy. The only redeeming factor in the whole box were the shrimp which were half descent. Oh I asked for chopsticks, and there were simply no silverware or napkins in the box. She did remember to give me a fortune cookie and a packet of soy sauce. Luckily I had one fork left in the office, otherwise so would have been eating with my fingers. Wow. So this was a 100% fail at being Chinese Take Out: Chinese, not really; Take Out, no utensils, bad food, bad service. Sorry for being a sour-puss. I write this stuff so that no one else would have to endure this garbage. There are not many choices in Blaine for Chinese food but I would definitely recommend passing on this one. Ordered beef and broccoli. The broccoli was hard as a rock. This place had ruined my tastebuds...in a great way. This place is my standard that I compare all other Chinese food too. I have the number saved in my phone so I can call ahead for pickup. You can walk-in and order and they're still pretty quick. Never eaten inside the restaurant. I bring it home to devour in private! **My favorite is the sesame chicken, extra heat. It comes standard on a bed of mini wonton strips that remind me of long, skinny Fritos. The best is when there is extra thick, sticky sauce on the bottom of the container. Not what it used to be, and it makes me sad. We had been loyal customers of 5 Spice for close to 10 years. Always had great food and generous portions. But the last couple times we ordered food, it was disappointing. I think they have been trying to save a little money by using cheaper ingredients, and it shows. We used to love the chicken wings--big juicy ones with awesome teriyaki sauce. The last two times the wings were so scrawny I had to wonder if they were pigeon wings. Of course they weren't, but they were so small and dry there was not much meat to gnaw off those tiny bones. But the same price, of course. LeAnn Chin seems to be the best bet around here. We had take out this past weekend. My wife had vegetable fried rice and eggrolls and I had Gen. Tsao's chicken. Both meals were good, but generally not very exciting. I discovered this little gold mine a few months ago. My job takes me all over the north metro, and I always look forward to a trip up highway 65 around lunch time. 5 Spice serves up the tastiest Chinese food, using fresh ingredients. I order from here almost weekly and bring as many new friends as I can. Everything is made fresh and to order, and they can customize heat on spicy dishes to your liking. This is a family run restaurant surrounded that really stands out among the chain stores, and the quality of the food is levels above the typical Midwestern take-out Asian places. Calling 10 minutes ahead is best if you know the menu, but on an average visit it's ready within a few minutes whenever we walk in. In addition to many of the standard items you'd expect from an Asian restaurant, they make a few outstanding extras. The coconut curry chicken in particular is fantastic. I enjoy the chicken pad Thai. This place has been around for years and is pretty reliable if you're looking for a quick take out option! I think sometimes the owners may come off as abrupt or rude but I think that is due to a language barrier. One of the last times we ordered from there she went out of her way to call back to clarify a couple of things. Finally, there is a decent place to get Asian take-out in the northern suburbs. The place is very nice, clean and appears to be quite new. The food is made-to-order, the service fast and the food is delicious. I don't call ahead because the chef can whip up the food in a few minutes so it is piping hot when I get to my car. My first time in, I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan, Kung Pao Beef (medium heat) and deep fried creme cheese wontons. I've always found I can learn a lot about an Asian resteraunt through these simple dishes. The many vegetables in the Moo Goo were fresh, crisp, flavorful, and not overcooked (which makes it easy to hide old veggies). Thankfully, there were no fillers slipped in there either (e.g. celery), a trick many resteraunts pull. The Kung Pao Beef was medium heat and turned out excellent. There were large pieces of meat, all the right vegetables and the heat was indeed medium (enough to know it is there and yet you can still taste the food). Actually, this is one turned out to be our favorite and there was much fighting with my wife over the leftovers! The Cream Cheese Wontons turned out great and even the fortune cookies were good! It is well-hidden in the strip-mall behind the Perkins at 125th and Central. Check them out, you'll be glad you did. One warning, this is a mom-and-pop shop; they are closed on Sundays . read more

I honestly can not for the life of me figure out how this place has any 5 star ratings. I ordered 3 entrees and pork fried rice from here for my family and father in-law. There was four of us and we had food left over, so we did not eat huge portions. We were all so sick after eating. Not food poisoning, but bloated. Our stomachs hurt so bad. My father in-law tried to purge the food as he was laying in bed in such discomfort. The only one of us who was symptom free was my 6yo, and she didn't eat anything. We used to go here all the time (it was in our backyard) and it was definitely a 5 but we just went a week ago and it's slipped a little. The sesame chicken is amazing and you can get it spicy (a rarity). It comes with these crispy wonton chips which actually stay crispy the next day and somehow make the chicken stay moist. The Vietnamese Lemon Grass chicken is also a tasty and spicy treat. We normally get the Lo Mein for our daughters (and have some ourselves) but stay clear of the Pad Thai. read more

We just moved to the northern suburbs and have been searching for our take-out staples of pizza (check! We found Adagio's Pizza Factory) and Thai/Asian. We partially decided to check out 5 Spice because of all of the positive Yelp reviews, but I have to say, we were both REALLY disappointed. We went into 5 Spice and decided to order take-out after realizing that there wasn't much seating. It was about 7:00 on a Saturday evening and it wasn't busy - there was a couple and one guy waiting for their take-out and no one dining in. We were told that our two entrees were going to take 30-40 minutes. Seriously? Everywhere else I have been for Asian food (unless it is SLAMMED) takes 15 minutes tops. But no, it really took 40 minutes and there were only three orders that went out before ours. After the long wait, we were hoping the food was going to be good (because they are definitely very generous with their portions and we were going to have enough for several meals). Both of us threw away our leftovers before the night was over. My curry stir fry had so much sauce on it that it was literally drenched and I could taste nothing else. My husband got a sweet and sour stir fry and he also had an insane amount of sauce on his food. Maybe some people enjoy having their food swimming in sauce, but we do not. We have really enjoyed the fact that the chicken was made without the sauce. The sauce was served on the side so my kids would eat the puffs of chicken but they did not like the sauce. We ordered take out last week and now it is served just like at LeAnn Chin...covered in sauce and lots of fat on the chicken. Also, the wing price was increased and the serving less. Used to be 8 wings for $4.95 and I was told now it's 6 wings for $6.95 however the menu I was looking at (I just picked up from the counter) at did not reflect that change. The food is decent but the service is the worst! I called in my order because it always takes 35-40 minutes. The old lady took my order and even repeated it back to me, complete with the fried rice substitution for 2 of the 3 meals. When I arrived there was only 2 of the main items ordered. The old lady argued with me that I didn't order 3 items. When I repeated what she said on the phone, her only response was that I could wait for the other item to be cooked and wait another 10-15 minutes. No time for that crap. The food isn't that good and my money is much better spent at a business that will admit their mistake, apologize for it and at least say thank you. I'm willing to drive the extra miles and pay more to a business that appreciates its customers. 5 Spice will not get any more business from me. read more

The vegetables were old and not fresh. We called to let them know and they said we always have fresh vegetables come in next time on us! So, we thought awesome! The following week we decided to try them again. I go in to pick up our food and the woman owner proceeded to raise her voice at me and tell me she has been in business for 15 years and she can't believe we would ask for a free meal. I said well your vegetables were not fresh last time and she said I don't believe you and we always have fresh food here. She even yelled at me in front of other customers. No table service gave us one styrofoam plate to share with table of two. No courtesy whatsoever . The Food was gross swimming in pools of sauce which was also in styrofoam . I ordered the wonton "water" soup and the chicken and cashew #1 on lunch specials with egg roll and rice .we also ordered the fried dumplings that you could tell were steamed then placed in frying pan for second the texture was like squid. Great crunchy veggies in the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken and Cashew Chicken. The Combo Lo Mein has wonderful flavor. Ordered when we got there and the food was done super fast. I'd been here many years ago when it first opened. Went back today looking to try it again. I had the orange chicken with wonton soup. Chicken was good but not spicy enough as I was told it would be. The vegetables were fine. The wonton soup was very bland with almost no taste. The store looks very messy behind the counter. There was no music or TV or radio so it was very quiet. I'd like atmospheric music please. It was nice eating in silence so I could enjoy my food more but there wasn't anything exceptional to enjoy. The price is fair for what you get. I probably won't come back here again for another 5 years just as last time. because I'll go to another place with better Chinese. read more

This is definitely my favorite Asian carry out in the area. I strongly recommend the coconut curry shrimp - spicy, creamy, slightly sweet. Each entree is probably two small adult potions so good for sharing or leftovers. read more

We order take out from 5 Spice a couple times per month. While it might be a little pricey compared to other take out places, the portions are huge. Each entree is enough food for two or three meals. Everything we have had there has been flavorful. I'm a big fan of the pepper fried tofu. read more

5 Spice is very good for an Asian takeout joint. Usually you have to deal with cheap quality (think new Bamboo Village). This place has great quality cut of meat. I don't make my Lemon Grass Chicken with oyster sauce, but it tasted like they used it. The Lemon Grass chicken is sweeter than I'm used to, but delicious! I'm also not a fan of general/sesame chicken, but my sister had it, so I tried it. That wasn't even bad! They also have Vietnamese egg rolls!!! (I HATE the typical vegetable eggroll you find at other places.) Out of all Asian takeout in the Anoka/Coon Rapids/Blaine area, I would recommend this place. (and I've tried just about all of them.
