Asian buffet that focuses more on seafood varieties than your standard Asain buffet. They had crayfish, crab, shrimp, mussels and squid. Tried a couple thought was okay for the standard buffet style food. Went on a Sunday evening the place was packed. With a slight wait, but all food tried was hot. Sushi was buffet style sushi while good tasting was no show stopper. They do offer lots of fresh fruit and limited salad area. With a couple deserts to choose from. Standard buffet ambiance with kids and families. Can get a little loud when busy but all food seemed stocked appropriately Overall great price at $52 for two people. read more

I would rather burn my money than ever pay a dime here again. This was the worst dining experience of my life. Start off with a rude host / greeter. No hi / how's it going. Just "2? That will be $47." My partner's card declined at first swipe, which was loudly announced. But we got through and were provided our 4 paper napkins and one set of cutlery each. Only to discover 4 dirty & underwhelming buffet lines. And a sea of rude & dirty people. Not a single cut of red meat in the building. The "crab legs" were imitation crab (not even sure that's legal). The shrimp were whole- had to peel and de-vein them myself. Remember the 4 napkins? Extra miserable when you have to rip through your own seafood with your hands. The flavors of what I did try were abysmal. Only thing decent were the egg rolls. Flies buzzing everywhere. The cookies are obviously store bought from Sam's or Costco, the jellies are cheap, the cream puffs were also store bought. The ice cream didnt even look good. You can find better Asian cuisine in the frozen aisle at dollar general. The staff are all incredibly rude. The middle aged woman working the dining room was following me around so close that she stepped on the backs of my heels, twice. And hovered over me as I ate. The employees at the food line also love to hover and actively get in the way. I truly expect to become sick from eating here. And will update when i do. My partner tried one of their doughnuts and ate nothing else- wish we had just walked away when we encountered that snot upon arrival. I'm reporting them to the health board and BBB. read more

Ok... I thought EVERYONE knew about 98lbs and shockingly in all my billions of times here... I have never done a Yelp review! Ok, lots of mixed reviews but people really are complaining that the place isn't a 5 star or upscale establishment. If you want that, I can recommend places in North Loop. I love this place the way it is and you will learn to love it when you try! The food here and consistency speaks for itself. I've been coming here for over 10 years and if it was closer to me... we would be here multiple times a month. Where can you go and get all you can eat sushi (Better than majority of the ALL you can eat sushi places! Plus, you can grab 1 piece vs needing to commit to a full roll!) and also get some amazing staples in hot food. Last time I was there... they had a mix of seafood, chicken, pork and beef options and all were quality proteins. They also have added new items to their rotation like Plantains! So good. 98 Lbs is ALWAYS busy and that is a good thing! The food stays hot and everyone else loves it, but we forget to review them. Whoever else loves 98 Lbs... show some love! Back at 98 Pounds because the 10 year old daughter had a hankering for some Chinese food. This time she brought a friend, and they went to town on the food. Luckily the kid price kicked in, and since we went on a Saturday, they had extra seafood for the lunch time crowd. Yum. The sushi selection was better on a Saturday, and they had a few more seafood options available as well. The standouts were the shrimp sushi (steamed, not raw), that was tasty, whole crawfish (good, but methinks they were previously frozen, then steamed), fried fish, their usual mussels, and whole head on salt and pepper fried shrimp. The peel and eat chilled shrimp were great as always, but I wish they were deveined ahead of time. It's a pain to do it yourself, but the fork helped to scallop the backside to remove the vein. The standouts were the little neck clams (I think anyway). They were delicious, had a good sauce, and the clam meat stayed in the shells, so each spoonful had a bunch of clams in them. Delicious! I actually had two whole plates just of those. As always, leave a good tip at the table when leaving. The staff are excellent at clearing the old plates, and refill the water as well. The drinks are included in the price of the buffet, so get that lemonade! Love this place, because they are consistently good. Even the sushi plays close attention to detail like the rice vinegar added to the rice for the sushi. I haven't tried the dinner buffet yet, but the weekend lunch is excellent. Come early! They open at 1130 but the doors open before then, but the dine in line might have to wait a few more minutes since the cashier takes a bit to get going. If you are doing a "to go order" just grab a to go container by the cashier and skip the line when they are opening. The sit down crowd has to wait for the cashier to open. The to go people have to get back in line, but usually have priority since they already have their food. This is definitely one of the better buffets around the Twin Cities. Three of us ate lunch here on saturday as Kramarckeks had a water main leak. $71 for 3 people, including sodas. I really liked the butter shrimp, green beans, crab ragoons, thin noodles, General Taos chicken. I went up about 4 times. Sadly the sushi was not good. Another time they were very slow to bring out more green beans and lo mein. I'd definitely return as the other food was good. Too stuffed to eat any dessert. read more

Been there a few times. Usually food is good. The sushi isn't as impressive as you would hope. Place is normally busy, no reservation needed. Has a decent variety of things. They have good deserts. Servers are good at refilling drinks and taking empty plates on a timely manner. Restaurant is usually always warmer than it should to the point it can be a little uncomfortable. Bathrooms there aren't as good as you would hope. One of the toilet seats there wiggle and feel like you are going to fall off. Atmosphere is family friendly and casual. We walked in behind another group. They were quickly and we paid. Found a seat and immediately went to the buffet. The food is most delicious. The Sushi is excellent, the wife enjoyed the muscles. We don't normally order drinks (saves a few dollars) they include the drinks in the price. It did take them a bit to get us drinks but not too long. The service was great. The food is delicious. If you are talking large Chinese buffets, this is one of the better ones around. It isn't the best I've had in the metro, but it is solid and predictable. I would say 3.5 stars if we could give half stars. Nice sushi selection and decent quality as far as buffets, nothing too wild, but solid. Buffet selections and solid and they keep everything fresh (except some super overdone crab legs last time I was there). Service is generally good, they take plates regularly and refill drinks as needed. The ambiance isn't anything special, not overly kitschy or anything, but not much to catch your eye. My Dad loved this place, so nostalgia is heavy here for me. It won't knock your socks off, but it is a solid buffet at a solid price. Haven't been to 98 pounds buffet in awhile and it feels good to be back. The food was great and tasted fresh not dried out from sitting for a long time. The crawfish was easy to eat and not dried out from over cooking. The clams were flavorful and not too salty. The salted five spiced shrimp was good but a little hard to peel. Not satisfied with the quality of food being served. I tried several different dishes from the buffet but nothing really caught my attention. Limited buffet area with somewhat limited seating. Can't complain about the service because they were short staffed. When I entered the door a really raw smell overtook me. Seems like a weekend heist with 2 Saturday afternoon buffets costing nearly $50!!! The food is nothing new and little better than acceptable. Service was nice and the restaurant has the same old ambiance through the construction. No premium seafood or other unique dishes were on the line to support this excessive price. The 98 Pounds Buffet is the best value around. It offers a huge variety of Chinese dishes, all you can eat, for $15 to $20 per person, depending on when you're coming in. There's an abundance of prawns and of various chicken dishes; the mussels and squid are excellent. I'm especially fond of the crispy string beans. The custard-filled flaky biscuits are irresistible. Plus, there's fresh sushi. It's all there -- entrees, soups, fruit, cookies, and puddings. The attentive staff keeps it neat and clean and is quick to take away used dishes. Good standard American Chinese food, it's usually fresh and hot (especially around regular meal times!). The dinner buffet is like $18.99, but a takeout box is $7+ a pound and very worth it! It's so simple, you grab a box, fill it up, take it to the register to get it weighed and to pay! They have all of your standard things and sushi that's pretty good too. This place is your typical Chinese buffet. They have a large variety of American Chinese food. I'm not a sushi person by my father is and he enjoyed the food here.
