Fine. I admit I brought my girlfriend here for a romantic date, which to any one else would seem atrocious. It's probably the least romantic spot to have a date. But that's the great thing about dating another Asian woman. We both find it highly romantic to sit in an empty dumpling house on ratty chairs, dumping watered-down sriracha all over our delicious pork and chive dumplings that we bought for $1 a plate. I got a $1 cold soybean drink that came in a small tub, not a cup mind you, cuz that's how Chinese people roll. We bought sesame pancakes - one with roast pork, and the other just with regular vegetables. So fresh, so soft, so delicious. We ordered crab rangoons and another plate of dumplings. I felt like the best girlfriend ever because I just kept telling her to order whatever she wanted, knowing that there was no way we would spend more than $15 there. Best part? This dumpling spot is kept cleaner than the ones I normally frequent. Also equipped with sturdier tables and chairs and huge, neat menu boards. Order process is quick. I had ordered a few dozen from here previously to bring to work lunch parties -- I didn't get to try any though. Today I decided to change that. The dumplings left a lot to be desired. Cheaper than most, yes. Still the $1 for 4 dumplings here. But what you get is a plate of greasy mess. The dumplings look deflated and sad -- definitely needs more filling. Gleaming with oil, a bite into one squirts out a stream of more grease. The filling was so fatty and didn't really have a discernable taste. I was so disappointed. After a fail on getting some banh mi, Wing and I came here. No it's not another dumpling crawl, but he wanted to show me another Prosperity location and for me to try the dumplings here. Well this location is a lot nicer than the one located in Manhattan. There were tables and chairs here to sit comfortably. The dumplings here were okay. I felt it was a bit too greasy and the skin isn't as crisp as the other location. I also tried their hot and sour soup, which was okay as well. If I want dumplings, I wouldn't mind coming here since it's in Brooklyn. But truthfully, if I just want Prosperity Dumpling, I prefer the one in Manhattan. read more

I am very serious about my dumplings. (Now that you know...) I decided to go on one of my random dumpling runs. This time I traveled across Brooklyn in search of dumpling goodness. I read the reviews and bookmarked Great Taste a while ago and finally had the chance to try it. I entered the store and began looking over the menu. I already knew that I wanted dumplings but, I had to take a moment to look at what else they had to offer. I noticed shrimp sesame pancakes and napa cabbage dumplings. Unfortunately, they were all out of sesame pancakes and napa cabbage dumplings must be purchased in a full order of 10. Slightly turned off, I decided to just go with one order of dumplings. The Dumplings... Maybe it was the end of the night so the quality wasn't there but.... I'm sorry these were not the best dumplings ever. The dough was extremely thick and kinda tough. The meat wasn't anything to stop traffic over either. I literally had one dumpling out of the entire order that was actually juicy and good. I won't give up hope just yet. So I had a lot of change and I tried to pay for a drink with 5 pennies.... yes, that's right, 1-2-3-4-5 PENNIES, but he wouldn't accept it. Ok what the f***?! How does this place have 4 stars?? I was very hungry and it was late at night. Not a lot of places open in the area I was in. This dumpling place was open and seemed promising due to the high reviews it has received. I walked In, and it immediately looked off. It was lit with ugly fluorescent lighting and seemed to be a bit dirty. I was the only person in there, besides the ONE old man working behind the counter. I ordered the pork dumping soup. It took a while to come out, not too fast or not too slow. Enough to actually make me think he was making it fresh. I got my soup and went home ready to eat it there. I was really disappointed. The dumpling meat tasted funny and almost cream like... The texture really put me off and so did the aftertaste. The broth was pretty much just oil and the bokchoy was probably the most edible thing in the entire soup. I can't believe this place has 4 stars... Even the pictures look appetizing??? I enjoy cheap eats that are really good and filling. This place is one of them. I'm a big fan of this place. It's about a 8 minute walk from my home in Sunset Park. They always have the special. $1 = 5 Fried Pork Dumplings. SO that equals to $0.20 per dumpling. You can't beat that. I decided to try the Fried Pork Buns. $1 = 3 of them. They are DELICIOUS! They are mini pork buns that are filled to maximum capacity with really good pork and chive filling. There was more filling than bun, which is a BIG PLUS in my book. Also I tried the Eggs that were boiled in Tea. $1 = 3 Eggs. I thought the eggs would absorb the tea like salted eggs, but it just tasted the same, like normal eggs. Another thing to get is the Roasted Pork Sesame Pancake. Really good and filling. It's a sesame pancake cut open with carrots, cilantro roast pork slices then with a drizzling of sauce. Oh, Prospierty Dumpling, how could you make me feel so prosperous one day and sick to my stomach the next ? The food is still consistently inconsistent, unfortunately. Walking by the neighborhood, my friend craved dumplings. And you know how contagious cravings are... Prosperity Dumpling's red awning beckoned toward me, promising me warmth and dumplings. Despite my previous disappointment, I felt obliged to give it a second chance. Curious, I ordered zha jiang mian with steamed dumplings once again to see if they would be any different from the first time. Bizarrely, I tasted two totally different items from last time. The zha jiang mian this time was tasteless and was lacking sauce. The noodles were still a pale yellow, with the occasional slightly stained strand. They were unbearably oily-- as I forcefully finished my plate, I was mortified to find an unnaturally shiny stryofoam plate staring back at me. I played around with my plate, watching in sick fascination, as the excess oil ran around the surface area of the plate. Ick. The dumpllings, however, were excellent. I ordered steamed again, and this time, they were much smaller with a thinner skin and flavorful fillings.At the same time, they had lost their greasiness, only to be replaced with the familiar tangy vinegar taste that pleasantly lingered on my tongue. However, I still ended up with a stomachache that lasted for hours. Conclusion? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH YOU, PROSPERITY DUMPLING. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and got the fried wontons and the steamed pork and chive dumplings. They were dirt cheap and came out pretty quickly. I thought the service was fine despite the language barrier. Main complaints are that the tables were dirty and could use a wipe down, and they don't have napkins easily accessible (you just get a couple with your order). Would also be great to have a few other choices, e.g. boiled wontons and some other spicy sauce options akin to the offerings typically available in Flushing for example. Not cool. My husband raved about this place but warned me about this guy's attitude so my expectations were not high. My husband used to work in the neighborhood and his buddies would go to this place all the time. We decided to stop by for steam buns and dumplings. The one guy that works here is an absolute jerk. He was beyond rude. He grabs money and then goes directly in the kitchen bare hand, grabs a handful of dumplings throws them in a wok. He hates everyone. I never even met him so I don't get why he's so angry. We shared dumplings and couldn't finish the buns they tasted absolutely atrocious. We left and went down the block to get some way better grub. $1 for 5 high-quality fried dumplings = would-be-5 stars. By high quality, I mean to say that the dumplings have intact skins, filling that doesn't make you sick (so long as you don't overindulge), and are decently sized. Epicures need not eat here; if you go to a dumpling joint to do something other than get full, you're doing it wrong. -1 star for putting my $4 order "to stay" of fried dumplings on a measly paper plate instead of a styrofoam take-out box. The plate didn't retain its shape when I had to lug it to the table to eat, and a dumpling fell onto a table-- it would've been lost forever had I not believed in the 5-second rule. Even the dude at the counter had a hard time bringing my order to the counter; he inconvenienced both himself and I, just to save himself 6 cents in packaging. This dumpling place is much better than the one in Chinatown, at least it's more spacious, and there are actually tables. The dumplings are just as cheap (5 for $1) as the original location. It's crispy, fatty and delicious! It's definitely worth going if you're on a run for something yummy and quick! For a little hole in the hall, you can get some incredibly good authentic Chinese food here. We ordered beef steamed dumplings, beef scallion pancakes, and chicken wings. The dumplings were spiced quite well and the texture was the right consistency (not too hard or too soft). The beef scallion pancake was very very different from scallion pancakes that you order at most Chinese restaurants. These scallion pancakes were more like bread and inside, it was very much like a beef Banh Mi sandwich: it had slices of beef, carrot, pickled goodness, cilantro, etc. The chicken wings were done well, too. All in all my meal cost me less than $10. You can choose items a la carte and mix and match quite easily. Who wants to eat huge portions right? I ended up with a lot of food to take home and my wife and I got to sample. The frozen dumplings (homemade) are also super inexpensive. The only con with this place is that it's super small (so it can't accommodate large groups) and it took about 20 minutes for them to bring out the food. read more

Small place with a few tables... kind of grungy, but there's always people in and out of here... so you know it'll be good. If you're looking for cheap and tasty dumplings, this is the place to go! This place will satisfy my dumpling craving any time. Great flavor with a little bit of crispy skin on the outside that holds all the meat juice inside. Just be wary if you use their hot sauce. It's definitely not pure Sriracha, but they use their bottle to hold whatever hot sauce concoction they made. It's way too watery to be real. I guess it still works enough though! Their beef noodle soup was okay... it had strong ginger flavor and anise though (if you like that sort of thing, it's probably going to be the perfect soup for you). The beef quality wasn't great though. I saw someone order the jia jiang mein and it looked awesome. I might have to try that next time... with an order of the usual dumplings of course. read more

These dumplings are the best Brooklyn option for frozen, cook-at-home dumplings. If you haven't done it, it is EASY and instant meal you can have on the table in less than 20 minutes. These handmade ones are infinitely better than any grocery store version, and cheap too. I go in regularly and order 100 frozen pork and cabbage dumplings by the bag for $9, take them home, cook up 30-40 for the family of 4, and throw the rest in the freezer. Here's how: 1.) Boil water in big pot over high heat. 2.) Throw frozen dumplings in and stir them around. Bring water back to a simmer (after all, you just threw in a bunch of dough/meat ice cubes) and turn down heat. Stir occasionally to prevent them from sticking. 3.) When they float, cook for one more minute then drain. Serve with soy sauce, vinegar and chili paste. Pan frying? Heat pan over high heat. Add oil, then dumplings and a cup of water or two to cover the bottom of the pan. Cover to steam until dough is cooked through. Take cover off so moisture evaporates and dumplings are golden brown. Eat! Refrying day-old boiled dumplings gets the best crust. Maillard probably knows why, but I don't. read more

I came here because it was the highest rated dumpling place in Brooklyn's "Chinatown". This place was actually very clean, had a number of tables, and a giant menu. I got the standard 4 pork and chive fried dumplings for $1. I thought they were good but still not as good as Prosperity in the city. I also found Kai Feng Fu down the street to be slightly better, though I would prefer to eat here just because of the space and menu options. I doubt anything on the menu would justify a special trip to Sunset Park just to eat here but I'm still jealous this isn't my local delivery spot and I do plan on trying more of their menu next time I'm in the area. read more

They don't speak English but they speak dumplings, delicious dumplings I love their Veggie dumplings and soups and my boyfriend lives for their pork dumplings and noodles. Their Veggie dumplings are only $2.50 fr 8 dumplings and the Pork are 5 for a $1. Can you say good cheap eats! I can't seem to just walk by. I have to go in and get a snack every time I walk by. For those who say this is "as good as Prosperity Dumpling in Chinatown": YOU ARE WRONG! Get the f*ck outta here! You know nothing about dumplings. Maybe that's a little harsh. Apologies. With that said, in terms of the filling, the dough, and the finished product, these are just not very good dumplings. I came out to Sunset Park specifically to hit several restaurants (the Vietnamese sandwich place is all its cracked up to be, its incredible, do not miss it), and this was really the only disappointment. Aside from the low quality dumplings (pork and chive specifically), my other big concerns were the soy sauce and sriracha provided, which were both watered down and had a really unpleasant sour/vinegar taste. Beware. What you must do, if you've been to this place but not Prosperity, is try Prosperity (on Eldridge in Chinatown Manhattan). These are NOT the same place. Get the pork and chive fried dumplings. I don't usually order pork or eat it either, and you might not. But you need to do things you don't normally do, on occasion, and this will be one of those occasions. If you don't order these (pork and chive, fried) you'll be depriving yourself, and self-sacrifice is never worth it. read more

I used to go to this place so often with my fiance that they knew our order by heart. My fiance loves the pork and chives fried dumplings as they were always fresh and consistent in taste as were the other items on the list. My favorites were the stir fried noodles, wonton soup and hot and sour soup. For the value, this place is hard to beat! Walked here from Dyker Heights in my continued search of the best dumplings in Brooklyn. Walking down 8th avenue in Borough Park is an experience all of its own. It's another example of what makes Brooklyn and NYC as a whole, so amazing. You'll know what I mean after you do it... Anyway, I got the dumplings "boiled" and they were great (although I suspect the fattier, fried dumplings would've been better because, isn't everything better fried?) I tried to order a Hot & Sour soup but they were out. The exhausted looking man behind the counter offered Wonton instead. I've been eating Wonton soup since childhood. I've had a wonton soup from every chinese food place I've ever set foot in. I was going to say no because I figured it was just too many dumpling-like foods for one sitting but I took the bait... WOW! No lie, it was the BEST wonton soup I've ever had. I know this is a pretty basic soup and you probably think "Really? What could be so different, Jenn?" Well, the wontons were wrapped in the thinnest, silkiest dough skin. The inside of the wonton was a flavor I've never experienced. It had an extra kick. I dont even know how to describe it (sorry I need to eat it again and yelp at the same time) but it was delicious. Sesame pancake was OK but I wouldnt get it again. Cant wait to go back! read more

This place is amazing! My favorite dumpling place in the entire world. Ok so maybe I haven't traveled through the entire world yet, but I can definitely say that this is my favorite dumpling house. I'm even going to say that it's better than Prosperity dumpling. Prosperity dumpling is extremely well known a) because it's been around for a long time and b) because of all the attention it gets from social media. But trust me this place is better. First off, while both places seem dirty, their food makes up for it. Prosperity dumpling is a lot smaller than Great Taste Dumpling and it gets really crowded in Prosperity. Great Taste dumpling has tables so families/friends can enjoy their meal there instead of taking it out. The two places both have the same wait time in regards to the food. I usually come here when I'm hungry and want something good, cheap, and filling to eat. I'll order $2 pan-fried pork dumplings and one hot and sour soup which I believe is $1.75 right now. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's really cheap and super filling. Other times, I get the pork tendon udon noodle soup. I'm not sure if I translated correctly in English. Oops. That shouldn't subtract from my argument tho! I'm absolutely in love with this place. It is amazing. Definitely try this place out when you're in Brooklyn Chinatown. I'm disappointed, maybe my first visit here they happen to make a bad batch of dumplings? The dumplings had a nice crisp on the bottom but I think they put too much water and the skin had a very mushy texture. It might be 5 pieces but the dumplings are quite tiny. They have a Prosperity dumpling in Chinatown and it's definitely not related. The dumplings between these 2 places taste completely different. I might be wrong maybe they are? The dumplings tell me they are not. The sesame pancake was not bad, I got the beef sesame pancake and I had better. They put some kind of vinegar sauce in the pancake and I didn't like that too much. I came here to order a small order for my friend's bigger house party order. It's really good on a small plate and really well made. However if you decide to order like 300 of dumpling, tell your friend it's a bad idea and it's really heavy :( You have to buy those big foil plate for the place too since they don't supply it and it will cost a few bit more. also you will hated by those hipsters lining up outside this small place. Seriously there are a millino other place or food to try in ctown, go places. Price is 4 for $1 and I don't know what they put in the meat filling but don't ask. Came here for some dumplings since we were in the neighborhood. Great great price. I can't believe how inexpensive the dumplings are. I ordered the steamed dumplings and my boyfriend ordered the steamed dumplings with soup. These took longer to prepare as we sat and waited for about 10 min as other patrons received their dumplings (fried) and ate them before we got ours. Overall, the steamed dumplings were okay. I used to go to the closet-sized Prosperity Dumplings until I outgrew my student metrocard and had to start paying for transportation. Now that Prosperity has a far roomier cousin in Brooklyn, I make sure to spend a lot of time here. It's a happy place, where one can chomp down on Fuzhou hot & sour soup and dumplings for eye-poppingly cheap. Dumplings are $1 for 4 fried and $2 for 8 steamed, but you really want the fried. Noodle Soups with meat and gai laan are probably the most expensive thing on the menu at under $5. Everything is fresh, tasty and totally worth the pilgrimage from whatever yuppy filing cabinet you live in; so hop in the whip and come through to Sunset to pick up on hundred packs....of frozen dumplings ($10) of course! * CASH ONLY * read more

Well, I am not exactly sure what was going on, but the place was packed at 2:30 on an absurdly hot Sunday afternoon. We had pork and vegetarian dumplings and scallion pancakes. Everything was very yummy and inexpensive, but the guy behind the counter forgot our order and served a ton of people before us. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back, but if I were back in the neighborhood, I would swing by again and give the place a second chance.
