Apparently this place has been a neighborhood staple for years, and I dropped by on my way back from the shore since I had not had some more premium homemade dumplings in a while. I decided to go with the violet pork dumplings since they seemed kind of unique. They were just okay though, and it was eight dumplings for nine dollars. The skin had a lot of space between it and the meat, which kind of tells me they were probably frozen for a while. Since they were pork dumplings, I expected the filling to be a bit juicier with more juice coming out when you bite into them, but that was not really the case. The filling also had a slightly gritty texture, which usually means there was not enough fat content to bind everything together, or like I said before, they might have been frozen too long and not that fresh. Could have been both honestly. Maybe I came at the end of the day, maybe it was an off day, or maybe I just ordered one of the less popular items. Either way, it was not bad enough for me to avoid coming back. I am just very picky and critical when it comes to dumplings. The salad, however, was actually really unique and I enjoyed it a lot. If you like tart, acidic coleslaws, definitely give it a try. It is basically a spicy Asian style coleslaw. read more

I remember when Kathy's Dumplings first opened.. it's close by to my yoga place and on my way home I picked up a variety. The dumplings are consistently fresh and they offered various options. I dined there once and found the place to be cozy. Then, I ordered delivery. I moved from that area to Shore Road, but always remembered Kathy's when the craving for dumplings arises. Tonight I was craving dumplings for dinner and ordered pan fried pork dumplings, scallion pancake and milk bubble tea. The pork dumplings were delicious and included shredded carrots. We love dumplings, so we were excited to try out Kathy's Dumplings for dinner recently. Overall, we thought the food was just okay. Fine if you are nearby and have a dumpling craving, but there are better dumplings in neighboring Sunset Park, and Kathy's probably benefits from the fact that there isn't much dumpling competition in the immediate vicinity. We got the pork dumplings, which weren't as flavorful as many we've had before, just salty. The beef pie and pan-fried pork buns were also lacking in flavor, just more meat and salt, and the hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour. We were expecting a lot more from the great reviews and a place with dumplings in the name, but were a little disappointed. Price isn't too bad though. Not Chinatown pricing, but fair. While we didn't really find the dumplings to be anything special, we really liked the cabbage salad. The vegetables were fresh, and the seasoning was just right. Although we've had other versions we've liked better, the cucumber salad was good too, refreshing and light. While we may have been a little disappointed on the dumpling front, we'd consider going back here to try more salads and also the noodles that we didn't get to this time. The food is delicious and fresh! The service is perfect! I love the pan fried dumplings. The wonton soup is like no other, with actual baby bok choy. The Chinese cabbage salad has a very unique and yummy tang. Last time I ordered a cold green tea bubble drink-- so glad I didn't get a soda! I like the juicy pork buns, hot and sour soup, bean curd soup, cold noodle, and steamed beef dumpling. If you only choose a few things at first, I say go for the pan fried dumplings, hot and sour soup, and a cucumber or Chinese cabbage salad . Delivery is quick and the staff is friendly. Wow. These were not only delivered to our house yesterday an HOUR and a HALF later than expected, they absolutely SUCKED. Granted I live in walking distance from here; that's the part I find the most insulting. Yes, I understand it was Chinese New Year yesterday, but don't tell me it takes 1 1/2 HOURS to deliver two lousy orders of pan fried pork dumplings and a "pork bun" order, which is actually soup dumplings. Good thing this wasn't more than the $20 I spent, (tip included). Once the soggy mess arrived, I was actually calling GrubHub to complain that my food is lost in transit somewhere. In the middle of Bay Ridge, a small local eatery of the friendliest staff and masterfully crafted "dumpling dishes". What began as a mere dumpling craving became a showcase of all they could provide! I won't say the places name, but there is a dumpling spot I walked in ready to compare this to, and they surpassed them in every way. The dumplings: sweet, moist, one bite on my end but a nice two bites with the dumpling. We tried the "soup dumplings" as well, better known on the menu as the juicy pork buns. These were a little different than what I'm used to, typically presented in a steam basket, even when I took a bite it was not what I was used to, but then! It was so stuffed with meat, and the broth slowly found its way out, very tasty. Now a woman came in immediately raving about the wonton soup, "best place", "number one", "wonton soup and allllll the veggies". My wife and I couldn't resist and had them throw in the soup as well. The broth is so silky, so subtle in the flavor of the meat and rich with the vegetable, you want to drink it before you can get to anything else. I finally got to try Kathy's Dumplings today. It was great! I ordered the noodle soup with wonton and bokcoy, the soup dumplings, Kathy's Special Pancakes, and fried popcorn chicken with rice. Couldn't resist the bubble tea so I ordered that too. The soup dumplings and pancakes were on point and delicious. My son really enjoyed the noodle soup with wonton and my daughter devoured the popcorn chicken with rice. I'm glad we were able to try this place because we will definitely be returning here. My kids and I were very happy and full when we left. So glad we found a new spot to eat. read more

I got the soup dumplings because duh... It has dumplings in its name. While eating them, I could feel my arteries clogging especially when I bit the top and poured in the vinegarie sauce on top. Just discovered this place a couple of months ago and I have ordered delivery several times from there. My first experience was good - we ordered 2 taro bubble teas, 1 order of the boiled beef dumplings, and the juicy pork buns. They forgot our straws so it was hard to drink our teas, but the dumplings were fresh. And so we ordered again... This time we placed the same order on seamless but were sent fried buns instead. It wasn't a big deal but this was the second time they messed up. No biggie. I'm a forgiving person and they weren't terrible. This time we ordered the same things plus a scallion pancake with beef. The pancake was delicious, as were the pork buns, but the beef dumplings... yikes. The meat wasn't juicy or fresh like the last few times. In all honesty, it looked gray and unappetizing so I let that first bite be my last. All in all, the dumplings are good but the quality is inconsistent so I probably wouldn't risk ordering food from them again. Side note, the owners were super nice. I stopped in for a bubble tea last week and they were friendly and quick. Good for a quick bubble tea, not for a whole meal. read more

Not sure what to say about this place. Stopped in recently and was really put off by how dirty everything felt. The interior of this was grimy and uncomfortable. Everything was covered in a sticky substance, from the menus to the beat up chairs and tables, really just gross. The person working the counter was uncaring and rude, like she had better things to do with her time, and I'm sure she did, but a little friendliness goes a long way. As for the food? Bland and boring. Everything was overly greasy, undercooked and not left to rest properly to remove all that excess oil, as everything was deep fried or pan fried, it needed to be shaken off or something. Ultimately there was very little going on here and I'm not sure where the 5 star reviews are coming from as any place in Chinatown proper would have been better, faster, friendlier and cheaper. The dumplings were just okay. Nothing really stood out. However, they are made fresh to order. The dumpling skin is crisp on the bottom, but the filling was definitely lacking in flavor. The beef noodles were quite good though. Nice broth with perfectly cooked noodles. I do want to mention that I did not get my free milk tea for checking in which was disappointing. I was coming home from the city and like any normal human being, I was really craving dumplings. This was on a Sunday in the early evening. Fortunately, Kathy's Dumplings is one of the only food establishments open in Bay Ridge that late. I had the [boiled] pork dumplings [$5.45] which come eight to a serving. Disappointingly, I found them to be pretty average. The pork filling wasn't particularly distinct in flavor or flavorful in general. The wrapper was doughy but the filling to wrapper ratio was adequate. I think the dumplings are made or at least filled in house, as I saw a woman in the kitchen assembling them. I also had a passion fruit bubble tea [$3]. I asked for tapioca and jelly, which they gave me at no extra charge. The passion fruit tea itself was delightful but the tapioca felt a little hard, almost stale. While the price for a quick meal is great, I don't know that I need to come back especially when Brooklyn Chinatown is so close. I'm just hoping the quality of product had to do with the time of day. read more

You will not be getting those cheap, oily dumplings you find in Chinatown for like $2 for 10 pieces here at Kathy's. Instead, you will find that they offer healthier versions of those dumplings. I've been here twice already and everything I tried so far has been delicious. Although, I didn't really enjoy the soups as much but only because they add alot of cilantro and I'm not a fan of cilantro. Next time I will ask them to hold off on those for my orders. Other than that, I enjoyed all the dishes I tried. Most of their dumplings order comes with 8 pieces. I don't think you can go wrong with any thing on their menu, but I especially like their Juicy Pork Buns (has alot of juice in it!) and I thought the Kathy's Special Pancakes were really good too. It's almost like a spring roll, except its in a rectangular shape and the skin is really thin and it's fried. It was absolutely delicious. They also serve bubble tea and other fruit juices. The bubble tea taste like any other bubble tea places. You get a choice of jelly or the pearls for the tea. But I'm basically only there for the dumplings. I can't wait to go back and sample more things on the menu and reorder the things I like. The food does take a while to come but I am patient for good food. The portions are fairly small, so we doubled up on the orders of Pan Fried Pork and cabbage dumplings, and boiled vegetable dumplings as well. Had this place bookmarked for awhile and ticked it off the list when my dad and I were looking for a place for lunch. It's not a huge place, but doesn't need to be, as it looks like they do mostly takeout and delivery (according to the guy we spoke to, their delivery range extends all the way to 17th or 18th avenue!). We ordered three things - the pan fried pork dumplings, the the Indian pancake, and the beef noodle soup. The Indian pancake came first. It was basically like a scallion pancake (without the scallions) and filled with curry chicken. Not bad. The fried dumplings were weird. They were half pan fried (only one side was crunchy), they were more round than long (more like soup dumplings), and weren't as good as Brooklyn Chinatown (or Manhattan). Kai Feng Fu in Brooklyn still gets my vote for best in NYC. The beef noodle soup at Kathy's was okay, but kind of bland. Hand Pull Noodle and Dumpling House on 18th ave is better, so if that's close enough to you, order delivery from them instead. I do appreciate that they offer a free milk tea with Yelp check-in, but probably won't be returning. It's a sign of the times for Bay Ridge to expand their cuisine options (mostly for white people), but hey, whatever sticks. read more
