    Korean Style Meat

Very interesting food from a mom and pop shop. Their soup noodle dish had some acidity to it which made a rather unique flavor profile. Their beef crepe was probably their best dish of the four I tried. However, in all the dishes with beef, I found the beef a bit tough and overcooked.

Humanity is capable of wreaking havoc and also creating beautiful things, and when it comes to food, horrible historic events like war and colonization have also wrought incredible new cuisines. Such is the case for the cuisine of Koryo-saram, which is what ethnic Koreans in post-Soviet states used to refer to themselves. As I understand it, a population of Koreans moved to Siberia in the 19th century to set up better lives for themselves, and a series of wars and conflicts over the years culminated in the deportation of Koreans from Russia by Stalin, over to Central Asia in countries like Uzbekistan. There's a community of Koryo-saram in Southern Brooklyn, and Eddie Fancy Food (formerly known as Elza Fancy Food, and Cafe at Your Mother in Law before that) is one of the best in the game. On their menu you'll find Uzebki-Korean dishes like Uzbek plov, Korean stews, lamb kebabs, samsas, and a whole lot of salads. My group devoured a dish of lamb served over Uzbek plov, which was buttery and full of flavor. We also loved a cold mushroom salad, made with shiitake and marinated in a sauce that gave it so much flavor. It complemented the pumpkin samsa we ordered, a flaky pastry filled with mashed pumpkin that was a cross between a sweet pastry and a savory dumpling. There isn't a lot of space in the way of seating, so you might enjoy taking your food to go. Go with a group and order a bit of everything, leave feeling nourished and well fed, as though you were eating in a grandmother's home.

    Disappointingly stale Samsa with Meat

I've wanted to try Cafe At Your Mother-In-Law for the longest time, until I discovered Elza Fancy Food (now renamed Eddie Fancy Food) was also owned by the same family and functions primarily as a take-out spot. They specialize in Koryo-Saram cuisine, ethnically Korean food adapted to ingredients available in post-Soviet states including Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. This distinctive cuisine was a result of the forceful deportation of the Koryo-Saram community from Siberia (many of whom migrated there in the 1860s) to Central Asia in the 1930s. At Cafe AYMIL/Eddie Fancy Food, there are a lot of Uzbek staples (including manti, plov, samsa) as well as Korean-style pickled/marinated vegetables reminiscent to that of banchan. I'd recommend the bean sprouts ($6/lb) and the chim-cha ($5/lb), a derivative of traditional kimchi but made using white cabbage. I ordered the samsa ($3) which came in three balls of onion-beef filling wrapped in baked pastry dough. The samsa were circular, instead of triangular and were stale. Although they were reheated prior to serving and piping hot inside, the crust was so hard I could barely bite through it. This was disappointing, especially since the filling was quite good and went well with the tomato-based dipping sauce. I also ordered the kuksu ($8.50), a beef noodle dish garnished with pickled cucumbers, sliced cabbage, scrambled egg strips and sesame seeds. The kuksu is served with a cold vinegar-y broth but can be heated up upon request. The noodles are very thin, almost like somen and they provide a small cup of dried pepper flakes in case you want to spice things up.

Oh boy why did I not discover this place earlier! Thank you my fellow yelpers for writing fantastic detailed reviews about this place! Started off with a small eggplant salad. I loved it, especially because I love eggplants in general. Then ordered the lagman noodles and cold kuksu noodles! Lagman was delicious and filling. Really liked the noodle texture. The soup base was like a thick tomato vegetable soup base. The cold kuksu was refreshing and filled with different pickled vegetables and beef. Everything was delicious and I will be back. I wanted to ask if this was a fusion uzbek Korean style flavor or was it more traditional on either culture. Too bad the ladies didn't understand English but then that's how you know they are authentic!

Korean-Uzbek is a fusion that I never expected, but it's so good! This is a small spot with so many different options - definitely need to return to try more!

After trying Cafe at your Mother-in-Law's near the Brighton beach area, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that they have a TINY location in the Bensonhurst area. I was in the mood for a COLD noodle dish on a 90 degree day, and their Guksu delivered. You can have the option of ordering the noodles cold or hot, but I personally really liked it cold, whereas my boyfriend preferred it to be hot. We parked our Guksu with the delicious Cucumber salad. It has a spicy kick to it, which I can definitely appreciate. Overall, the food and the service was absolutely amazing. I took off one star just because this location really isn't made for in store diners. There are only two small tables at this location and when I walked in, both tables had clutter on them. The staff quickly cleaned up for us, but they definitely weren't expecting us to dine in, as this is a mostly take-out joint. That being said, definitely check this place out because their food is delicious!

Small mom and pop with a very cozy and homey feel. Get their kuksu noodles and plov! This restaurant is run by lovely ladies that are usually quite busy in the back whipping up delicious food. We also had a chance to try their kimchi, which is also conveniently packaged in to-go containers to bring home. There's about two tables that can cater to two separate smaller groups (of 2-3). Definitely worth a visit!

Spicy red pepper bean sprout salad! (It's different from South Korean version, no hint of sesame oil)

Updated: 10/18/2018 I've been back for quite a few times and it never disappoints when it comes to their cold salads. Love the fernbrake, bean sprouts, cucumber and napa cabbage salads! Very flavorful and goes well with whatever main (rice, noodle, congee, dumplings) you're enjoying! I've tried all the combos and personally, ramen & rice hits the spot! Explore - Yelpers! ************************************************ I've passed by this place for the last 10 years and never gave it a 2nd thought... But after seeing Yelp food pics, I decided to try the ban-chan.. Side dishes cuz I love Korean side dishes! I noted to self: as suggested by many Yelpers, this is a fusion of North Korean & Russian good eats. I can only speak to the following items I've devoured! -Bean sprout salad, clean, simple, delicious & different from the South Korean version with no hint of sesame oil flavoring but packs a nice punch with the cilantro and red pepper powder (FYI - Korean red pepper powder is slightly sweet and spicy!). -Fernbrake salad, I LOVED it! It was very different from the usually mild "salt & sesame oil" of the South, & usually in stew or bibimbaps... This one has intense chili oil, vinegar, red pepper, & salt taste (probably originally preserved in a salted water package. These have to be imported from Korea... The States don't have these wild growing veggie roots here) - it goes really well with a bowl of plain white rice or noodles! -Cucumber salad, this version was soaked in red pepper & lots of vinegar (possibly apple cider vinegar). It's like pickled but the strong sourness makes you crave some meat to compliment each other. -Meat & Rice dumplings (don't know the name, the nice lady recommended)... We didn't love it... Bc unlike the side dishes... This one lacked serious flavor... Very bland. It does however come with a red pepper paste as dipping sauce. It is very spicy and not everyone will like this. Overall, while some items are very pricey (fernbrake salad sets you back $15/lb!!!), definitely worth giving it a go! I heard the cold noodle soup is good but we're Chinese... We tend to like our noodle soup piping hot! Happy feasting Yelp peeps!

    Kuzku soup and finished cucumbers
    Carmen W.

No body elza on 86 that can do Korean fusion this good. The kuksu soup was extremely refreshing on a hot summer day. It's acidic, with a hint of lemon, and barely that spicy. The noodles were rice noodles, nice chew, and definitely not over cooked. On top of the noodles will be a nice arrangement of crunchy cucumbers, egg, sesame, beef, and garnish. Definitely worth $7.50 and big enough to share if you get a side or two. My side: cucumber dish for $4. Almost like the ban Chan they serve in Korean restaurants with an added Russian kick to it. Would probably get manti if I'm getting the kuksu next time since similar spicy sour flavors going on here. I ate here with my boyfriend and had no clue whether to tip or not. I paid with card, they changed us tax, but there was no tipping line so I assume no tip. Soo worth it and can't wait to come back with people to show them a new hidden gem nestled right in Bensonhurst!

    Manti, kimchi, and samsa
    Judy N.

Hidden gem in the neighborhood! I've lived here for so many years and only discovered Elza's a few years ago. I think I found out about this place too late. The shop front is unassuming and the store is not on the main road with all the shops and restaurants. I read about the kuksu in a local article and was immediately intrigued. Once you step inside, you'll find a Korean looking aunty, but then you notice everything is NOT Korean. You notice kimchi, but it looks slightly different. Note - you should still try it! Its kimchi with dill and an European flavor. The kuksu is a cold sweet soup and reminds me of bibimbap in the way the dish is laid out. Winter, summer, I love it whenever. The manti reminds me of giant meat dumplings with a soft, thin skin and you dip it in sour cream. If you want to try a good type of 'fusion', this is it!

Hanum: crepe filled with shredded potatoes
    Amy Y.

Once you step into Elza's you will feel very homey. It seems to be owned and run by this petite Korean lady that is fluent in Russian. She receives a lot of take out order. There are only three tables that seat 7 people. The English menu is not very descriptive so I relied on mostly yelp pictures, reviews and google! Thank you internet! Kuksu: Cold noodle soup with strips of beef, napa cabbage, pickled cucumbers. Great and refreshing for the summer heat. A little vinegar-y sour. There's a numbing spiciness aftertaste that hits you at the end. Still very delicious. Big dish; can feed 2 people. Manti: Beef filled dumplings. Comes with sour cream? Very good and filling. Comes in 5 pieces. Hanum: Crepe filled with shredded potatoes. Very good with the tomato onion sauce that comes with it. Highly recommend this place. If you don't know your Uzbek/Russian dishes, google the menu first or bring a Russian friend

Kuksu noodle soup (cold)-Korean/Russian noodle with shredded beef, eggs, cucumbers, toasted sesame
    Mei C.

Read some Yelp reviews before heading out to this small family owned shop. Its very small and homey as there's just a table and a few chairs setup. The woman who is the cook/cashier/ everything else is very limited in English. I asked which Kuksu soup taste better hot or cold. A customer in front of me recommended the cold one as he said it brings out the soup more. The cold Kuksu noodle did not disappoint, it was refreshing and so tasty. I also ordered the Manti which was a bit flavorless and bland. Will return next time for the Kuksu noodle soup again.

Since I was staying in Brooklyn for work, Haenyeo was an easy choice for a date night dinner. We went on a Thursday evening around 8pm. We didn't have a reservation but were seated immediately without a wait. The restaurant was fairly busy; if you're planning ahead I would consider making a reservation. We started with an order of the Japchae. Then we ordered the Bibimbop with chicken and the Bulgogi. The Japchae was underwhelming. Not a strong flavor profile, leaned sort of bland. The entrees were much better. The rice in the Bibimbop had a really yummy crispy layer. When all mixed together, it's a great melody of flavors and textures. The Bulgogi was equally enjoyable. Definitely recommend the red spicy sauce it comes with. We shared both entrees among 2 people and felt the portions sizes were decent - neither left hungry. The service was okay. We didn't seem to have a dedicated server. It felt like all the wait staff takes care of everyone simultaneously? Everyone was friendly; there was just a long wait for someone to come for our food order. If you're looking for an authentic experience with Korean food, this may be the spot for you.

Last night we decided it was time she try Korean food, and specifically he wanted to choose a Bib Gourmand restaurant. We booked this reservation the same day, and watched spots get taken as we booked on the website! Street parking wasn't hard to find and we were greeted and seated immediately. We loved the calming atmosphere inside and had a table with a view of everything. After offering us water, we decided on drinks. I ordered the Velvet Reviver, which was described as an espresso martini meets a White Russian. It was delicious and almost like a dessert drink. My boyfriend ordered The Squid & The Whale which grew on all of us, especially paired with our food. To start, we shared the Yache pajun (vegetable scallion pancakes) and the Dukboki fundido (a Mexican inspired spicy, hot, cheesy dip with my favorite chewy Korean rice cakes inside). The scallion pancakes were delicious and had much more texture than once I have tried in the past, paired with a perfect vinegary sauce you can spoon on top. We all loved the dip and it was the perfect amount of spicy and comforting chewiness. I then was recommended a white wine to pair with the appetizer I chose as my entree, the Yeoneo. Each slice of salmon was incredibly fresh, and they were very generous with the amount of row that was served as well. The greens and avocado slices were great as well to add more texture. My boyfriend then ordered a yummy beer and the Daegu jorim. We absolutely adored this dish and noted that the cod had perfect structure to it, that almost mimic that of the deliciously cooked radishes in this dish. His mother ordered the ultimate comfort dish of the night, the Kalbi jjim (with no jalapeños). We were in awe at how the meat fell apart due to how tender it was. If you like melt in your mouth beef and stew like dishes, this is the dish for you. Our food was served with some banchan: amazing kimchi, myeolchi bokkeum (dried anchovies, much more mild than you'd expect), and kongjang (soy beans, also mild and with more chew than a typical edamame you might expect). We absolutely loved our dinner here and how helpful and kind the weight staff was, explaining different dishes and flavors, and clearing and switching out our plates at every turn.

Happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised! Almost everything we ordered was delicious! Both Korean Fried Chicken orders had good flavor and great for sharing. I rarely see Soy Ginger as an option (usually it's Soy Garlic) but I like the slight sharpness it added to each bite. The Seafood Pancake was crispy, loaded with seafood, and paired nicely with the ponzu. The Slow Loris Roll was incredible! The rice ratio was just right, there was a good variety of fish and it was all fresh, the avocado and sauces added nice creaminess, and torching the roll was the cherry on top. The Spicy Bulgogi Fried Rice with Cheese was super savory, the sunnyside egg was cooked perfectly, and the portion was solid.
