Taverna is one of those places you can eat at once a week... Or every night in the same week... And maybe not even realize you're eating there so much. The food is excellent, service is excellent and you can feel a little healthy too. Triple threat. I eat at Taverna probably once a week. They must have a serious grill back there in their open kitchen. All of the meat dishes and whole fish I've had are perfectly cooked. (The sign of a proper, hot grill) The sides are excellent also, with the green beans as a hands down favorite. The portions are massive and great for lunch the following day... Or a late night snack when you're deep in a Netflix fog. Food run down: - Grilled Chicken platter - the hands down favorite. I think they brine the chicken in angel wings. - Green beans - traditional Greek green beans with stewed tomatoes. So good. - whole fish - what they have depends on the day. Always amazing. - Lima bean hot appetizer - more like a Lima bean stew or soup really. I get it in the winter as my meal sometimes with pita bread. - Greek salad - amazing. Just the right amount of dressing and capers for that little extra something something. Queue the porn music. - salmon wrapped in grape leaves - the leaves are charred on the grill. The salmon is cooked to your request. Really the only way you can go wrong is to not order this dish. - souvlaki - again that grill slaps them with the char without overcooking. Dive into these hard. Overall my partner and I were dissatisfied; From start less than half a minute from sitting down our waiter in a rush but forcefully smiling asked us what we would like to order; we still don't know his name nor he "welcomed" us.... we asked him to return as we just sat down, ordered a bottle of red wine and my partner ordered a traditional GReek meal, Musaka ( spell....) but they didn't have it so we had to wait longer as I wanted the whole fish ordered together with hers; by desert time I ordered a dessert with a long name , custard cream inside but the dough on top was very hard and felt not fresh; had to ask my partner to try since I wanted to make sure I wasn't wrong. We told him as he came later and quickly replied "sorry" . He never took it off the bill and that might be the reason we won't return ; and we did order everything from wine to appetizer and deserts ; We live 5 min away so we where've been happy to return but service in this service industry should be the top priority read more

This wasn't the restaurant we originally had hoped for on a Valentine's day, however we made this reservation literally 10 mins prior and hoped for the best since it was my first time ever trying Greek food. My husband and I were seated right away. It was more of a casual restaurant than I thought and I wouldn't say it's a romantic restaurant at all. The service was okay, nothing spectacular since he didn't even share what the special was. I ordered the pork chop and my husband ordered something that had cheese, eggplants, ground beef mixed? And some kind of spinach pie as an appetizer. The food was horrible. I didn't like it at all. My pork chop was so dry it tasted and looked like it has been microwaved three times prior to being served to me. It had no taste, it was hard to chew and I told the server to take the dish away. My husband said he didn't like his food one bit but wanted to eat just to eat. The only thing that was good on our table was their complimentary bread and that was it. Never again I will go here. This review is long overdue. I would of written it earlier but I couldn't remember the name of the place. I will be direct, I've got a lot of beef with this place. The food here is decent but you have to understand that is how it is with most Greek food. Greek food is like Mexican, it's pretty much all the same stuff just rearranged and called different things. As long as it doesn't give you explosive diarrhea or the sweats it's usually a thumbs up. This place has a lunch and dinner menu. Ok. A lot of restaurants have this. Even though I don't understand why this happens (nor do I really want to understand) I can't stand this. Unless the chef is turning into a pumpkin past a certain hour it doesn't seem unreasonable that I can have what's on the lunch menu at dinner. Especially since (at this place) ITS EXACTLY THE SAME THING. The Only difference is the dinner menu costs about 35%more, which is complete BS. I went to this place pretty pumped to eat a nice Gyro. I don't eat them a lot but when I do, I really enjoy them. When I tried to order it from the dinner menu they wouldn't serve it to me because it was a lunch item. What? The entire country of Greece was built around the Gyro. I am pretty certain there was a Greek god of pita bread and tzatziki. The waiter did tell me that I could have a gyro platter but that didn't come wrapped up in the bread or with any bread at all. When I asked if I could just get some bread on the side and wrap it up myself I was told "no". At this point I was ready to kill but, because I am such a gentlemen I sucked it up and rolled with it. I ended up getting the octopus, which wasn't memorable. In addition to not being accommodating or at least willing to try, the waiter was slow and inattentive. Drinks weren't refilled and I felt like he thought he was doing me a favor. If he really wanted to do me a favor he would of shaved his unibrow. Rather than choke him with my octopus tentacle i decided to air my grievances with manager when I left. When I asked the hostess (who was very polite) to get the manager she obliged willing and the guy showed up, after 10 mins. I calmly and politely explained my failed request for a gyro and the poor service. The man grew visibly frustrated and told me "that's how it is, you don't like it? don't eat here". My mother was a waitress, I've worked in the food industry and I've also been a human my whole life and I know that this is not how to speak to a customer. I'm sure he just finished up dealing with a 300lbs man with sweat stains on his stomach who's gorilla-like arm harm just clogged the motor that turns the rotating rack of meat in the kitchen but be nice. Even if you think I am unreasonable, I am a customer and I have a yelp account (God dammit). Hear me out and say you're sorry (even if you aren't) that's how it works in the restaurant biz. Needless to say I don't think you should eat here. The bathroom also looked like the Tasmanian Devil took a bath in the toilet. read more

First and last time at this establishment!!! Drove almost half an hour and was extremely disappointed with my choice. The bathroom was filthy!!!! An open soap container with hardly any soap; which correlates to employees preparing food being unable to wash hands. I asked if the vegetarian Moussaka on the menu was good and a good vegetarian option. And asked if there was meat in it being that I am a vegetarian. The waitress informed me that it was good and a good choice for me. Well, unfortunately when the food arrived, I took my first bite to find out there was hamburger meat. I have not eaten meat in 21 years. At this point I was sick to my stomach and lost my appetite. My husbands food was not cooked well either. 2nd time here will not return. I usually pass by here on my way to Baumgart's on the weekends and its usually really crowded. Its located in a cute little shopping area at City Place in Edgewater. You can sit out side if its nice out and get a view of the city. We had: Grilled Octopus - This dish was ok... a bit chewy and grilled a bit too much. Lamb Chops - Wow - I dont usually like lamb but this was really cooked well. I almost didnt taste the lambeyness at all! Not alot of spices or sauces to hide the meat taste either! Over all I would get this again. Salmon wrapped in Grape Leaves - I am also not a big fan of Salmon or other fatty fish... but this was also really good! Salmon was wrapped in grape leaves with mushrooms, tomatoes and spices. Surprisingly good. Gyro Platter - We had to get this... Not bad. Overall it was very good. What an amazing find; thank you Yelp! We may never have stopped here otherwise. The food is fabulous here. Here's what hit out table: moussaka, tatziki and fresh pita, the salmon, spinach and brown rice (side), greek potatoes (side), lamb, bifteki, sauteed vegetables (side). Leftovers were taken home (and still were awesome). We all went home happy full talking about when we were coming back for our next meal while trying to decide what to order next. The staff was a pleasure (thank you Anna) as well. Its BOYB if you want it to be, which is always great. Disappointing is an understatement. My long background in the restaurant business includes working in two different well known (great!) Greek eateries in Manhattan. Additionally my Dad was from Greece, I've eaten homemade Greek meals ever since I can remember. I cook Greek dishes regularly using my Yiayia's (Greek Grandma) recipes and an old cookbook published by the ladies of a little Greek Orthodox church on the upper West Side. And I've traveled extensively in Greece, eating my way from Athens to Ithaca to Naxos to Mykonos. I KNOW my hellenic dishes. Nothing resembling authentic Greek food was served to us recently at the Greek Taverna... After reminding my husband that it's been too long since we've been to Greece, he thought it would be fun to check out the Greek Taverna in our new hometown in Edgewater NJ. We thought the place was kind of cute as we walked in the door, but from the get-go, we were bombarded with an overwhelming smoky smell coming from the open kitchen. However things happen, maybe something burned and the air hadn't yet cleared. The sweet waitress took our order and everything came out in a timely manner. We started our meal with a shared bowl of chicken lemon soup. Traditional avgolemono it was not; mushy rice, very faint chicken flavor and reticent lemon essence left me shrugging my shoulders and hoping the next dish would not be so bland. It wasn't...our meatballs (keftedes) were over seasoned, over sauced, over mushroomed and way too soft like they had added too much breadcrumbs into the mixture. But wait! The cheese dish, They can't possibly screw that up! They didn't, but it was very sweet and cloying, really more of a dessert and therefore not as enjoyable as it might have been if we'd had it at the end of the meal. By this time we were both filled with trepidation about our entrees, but decided to forge ahead with hope that the meal could possibly be salvaged. He ordered the gyro platter (he's an Irish meat n potatoes boy, what can I say). It was a bland, nondescript dish, the too salty meat had an odd mushy texture without the usual chewy, slightly juicy goodness we are accustomed to, oily slices of roasted (I guess) potatoes and the only really good part of the entire experience was the tzatziki, a refreshing and tasty yogurt dill dip. The toasted pita bread wasn't bad either. I was in the mood for lamb and the specials board listed a lamb giouvetsi. This dish is a traditional slow cooked peasanty meal that includes lamb on the bone, orzo, garlic, oregano, tomatoes, etc and, made properly, is a deeply flavored rich dish that leaves one feeling like they are enjoying their quaff in their yiayia's kitchen being spoiled silly. Not so here; the dish was over salted, had strange slices of what appeared to be days old lamb (rather than falling-off-the-bone tender lamby goodness) and the orzos had the flavor of a ready-made beef sauce or gravy instead of a richly aromatic lamb-tomato infused depth. Couldn't eat it and for the first time in my life, I sent the dish back nearly untouched and requested no replacement, I'd had enough. The waitress apologized and had the dish removed from our bill, but the manager never bothered to come to our table to offer apology or even a complimentary coffee. No matter. We wouldn't eat there again if they offered us a meal for free. There's always Santorini in Fort Lee, we hear that's pretty good. Maybe next week, right now I have to shampoo the smoky odor out of my hair. read more

She got the lamb chops and I got the lamb kabobs and both were excellent. The price was right and the food was plentiful. Pretty good Greek food here. I had the Taramosalata (lemony fish dip), Melitzanosalata (eggplant dip), Dolmadakia (grape leaves) and the lamb souvlaki platter. We tried to order hummus, but apparently they were sold out. How does a greek place sell out of hummus? The food was decent. My lamb souvlaki was a little dry though. The service was good and place was packed. Even though they have wine on the menu, you can bring your own as well. So, all in all, I liked the place. I had my 65 th birthday today at GT. It was great. My friends and I were impressed by the food and service. They showed extra care to make sure the celebration went well and supported the festivity by keeping the cake cool and the wine we brought on ice. I highly recommend this restaurant for celebrations! The waiter was such a D-BAG! Ordered a Gyro platter and he came out with pork chops...apparently the waiter couldn't hear properly. Didn't even ask if I wanted to switch or bring another entree instead he opted to claim I pointed to the pork chops which was NOT case.
