    Gizzards, fries, and okra
    Val W.

How did I live in the greater Birmingham area for almost 10 years and not try Green Acres until now? I've definitely been missing out--especially as a person who enjoys some fried liver and gizzards from time to time. My husband takes our boys to work out with their trainer downtown and one day, he asked did I want him to bring me some Green Acres back since he was nearby. I asked him what type of food does Green Acres sell. He gasped into the phone, "You've never had Green Acres?" I tell him no. He said I should look up the menu. Y'all...I saw liver and was sold! He brought me back liver, okra, chicken wings, and fries. Listen...I had never had chicken wings "all the way" (which means they put ketchup and hot sauce on them) and I was definitely missing out! Needless to say, the food was delicious. It's fried to perfection to me. I'll definitely place an order again soon!

Simple, delicious food cooked to order.

This place has been around maybe longer than I have and I think that's probably because they keep it simple, cook it fresh, and are a no frills operation where you order at the counter, wait for your number to be called, pick up your bag and go. No seating but if you're headed to any of the parks nearby or just picking up something to take home this works just fine. The menu is unpretentious and inexpensive. Wings, fried fish, burgers and fries, smoked sausage sandwiches etc. The place has the right combination of portion size, price, and quality that makes it perfect for a quick lunch. Long story short this is an iconic spot with a long history of doing what they do and if you're in the area and craving a bite to eat, it's worth the stop and so you should do that.

This Lady, their fingernails are just as pretty as mine, we have 2 things in common we keep our nails dripping and our craving 4 chicken!

Food, was seasoned just like, I like it not too much salt and pepper or anything else thrown in. It, was a little busy, but as usually, the line, moved pretty quickly, they get you in and out, but you always leave with a bag of hot food, which you ordered. The, ladies, that work their, which take your order, are so, nice and always greet you, with a smile on their face. I enjoy going, their because, the people that's their waiting, for their food, for the most part, everyone be nice, hungry, with southern small talk! I highly, recommend, this Downtown Green Acre Location, for some good, southern comfort food.

This is the downtown Green Acres cafe. We stopped here to get a night time snack and they did not disappoint. This place is a staple of downtown Birmingham. Both cafes on my side of town closed during the pandemic. I ordered two 3 piece fried hard wings all the way. I also ordered okra for the Mrs. Everything came out delicious. We got a park right out front and the wait wasn't too bad considering all food was still hot when we got home. It would be UnAmerican to give this iconic place less than 5 stars

Whatever you call it, ethnic food, soul food but we just call it supper, Green Acres has got it quick hot and tasty. It's counter service only so you're going to grab it go. The folks are friendly and it can get busy especially at lunch time. If you're tired of Macheattburn and the same old chicken sandwich walk over and get some rib sticking food. From the Chicken wings, where you get a whole wang. To the fried green tomatoes it's a time.

Just left visit from trauma unit with Godson, decided to treat the crew at something different... first time at spot... It's an okay neighborhood joint.. A grab and go. I'd say an authentic experiment....

Green Acres is such a hidden gem in the Birmingham community. Although it is often perceived as a "hole in the wall", it is easily one of the best chicken wing places that I've ever tasted. I visited this past Saturday. I had not been in a while and I was craving it. Luckily, I found a parking space right across the street. So when you walk in, there is usually a line (because it's sooooo good). Do not let that deter you. I assure you that I had three orders and the line was to the door when I walked in. I waited no more than 15 minutes in all from the time I placed my order to getting my food. The line moved so fast and the cashier was very pleasant. I had a question about an item and she answered right away. She was also very thorough. Let's get to the food. After I placed my order, it was not even 10 minutes that I got my food. I had a total of three orders: Manager's Special (6 pc wings, fries, and fried green tomatoes). This was for my mom who has been watching her use of hot sauce. So she didn't get it "all the way". She got hers with the usual seasonings and minus the ketchup and hot sauce. I got 5 pc wings and fries, all the way. I mean really, how can you go to Green Acres and not get at least one item "all the way". I also had a side of okra. My sister had a okra fried hard (they give you enough to make a whole meal) and a side of Peach tea. People really don't understand how good the okra is and just how well seasoned their food is. When I got my food, the first thing I looked for is grease stains on the bag. If it's not greasy, then it's not right. I want to see the grease stains on the bag at Green Acres. This is my sign that there is goodness in the bag. My order was correct (as usual). The wings were very well seasoned and they add just the right of hot sauce/ketchup mix when you get "all the way". It is not overpowering and not too spicy to make you not want to eat it. The okra was very well seasoned and fried to perfection. I tried the fried green tomatoes and I'm not a huge tomato fan. However, theirs is the only ones that I will eat. They are breaded perfectly and they are not mushy, which is what has soured me on fried green tomatoes at other places. The breading offers a crunch and almost resembles breading that you would find on an onion ring. I truly enjoyed Green Acres and I plan to visit there at least once a week. They also have several locations in addition to this one.

Got the manager's special. I liked the fried green tomatoes the most. They were crispy and seasoned well. The chicken wings and the fries were okay. The wings were a bit dry and definitely needed some sauce on the side - maybe this was my fault for not getting any. Keep in mind that takeout fries will get soggy, and in this case extra soggy, since the ketchup isn't separated out on the side. The price is very good, though.

I was specifically super excited to try their seasonal matcha special, which was made with horchata (also from Salud!) and strawberries, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, we walked in only to find they were out of the supplies needed to make the drink. :( I was caught off guard and didn't know what to order, but the barista recommended a latte with maple flavor so I went with that. The interior was clean and spacious and had a relaxed and calm but energetic feeling to it. Good place to hang out or work quietly. There's a self-service area to spruce up or fix your drink or grab lids or stir sticks. Service was nice and my drink came out quickly. It was pretty good but not really the "right" drink for me. I like my stuff on the sweet side and this was much more balanced and coffee-forward. That said, it held its own against my sugar-craving taste buds and I drank most of it, which is usually the hallmark of good brew, lol. I don't really blame them because I blanked on what to order and just went with what was suggested. It's probably a great suggestion for lots of other folks! Would be happy to come back and try a different beverage. Seems like a nice place overall. :)

Nestled in the Mountain Brook area, it's a little hard to see but is right next to Chez Lulu, which I think is a sister restaurant. Parking is a little tricky but manageable. I got there fairly late so the selection was a bit picked over, but I still got a good array of treats to bring home. Service was a touch slow but friendly. They were fairly busy. There's no room to eat inside or outside that I could discern; it's exclusively a take and go type of place. I got two pecan sandies to share with my parents, who were along for the ride, and then a cardamom bun and a peanut butter cookie for later. Sadly, I don't feel like any of the pastries really wowed. The pecan sandies were a little too dry (even as sandies go) and the pecans didn't taste toasted nor were they especially plentiful. The peanut butter cookie was the best thing, though it too was a little on the dry side - nice PB flavor though. I straight up didn't like the cardamom bun. The cardamom flavor was completely overwhelming, to the point it wasn't sweet at all, and instead tasted almost medicinal. The texture was nice but I couldn't finish it. Perhaps I arrived too late to order their specialties. I know they specialize in European goodies so if I return I'll make sure to try a croissant or something similar.

When I went to the counter, I took a moment to look at the menu, and told him it was the first time in. He took the time to explain the signature flavors, the various ways to order a drink, and even explained the different notes of the coffee beans they offered. I ended up ordering a vanilla cardamom cappuccino to go. The barista brought the coffee to my table, which I found extremely personable and kind, even though they had multiple orders to make. The coffee had great notes of cardamom and vanilla without being overly sweet, which I really appreciated. Even though I got it to go, the drink stayed warm for quite some time, and was in a compostable container. In addition to this, all UAB students actually get 10% off, just make sure to show your Blazer ID. One thing I noticed for future visits is that the tables are quite small, so it may not be the best place to do work or study, especially not in group settings.
