I learned from this spot what it means to go to a true chicken shack. They serve whole wings with fries and bread, and when you douse the plate with hot sauce, it absorbs into errrrythang. The molecular integrity of the batter and skin stay intact with a lot of hot sauce on top and the bread and fries absorb it so well. I also first started eating gizzards and livers from here which are awesome and lightly fried at Green Acres. The sleeper item here are the fried green tomatoes. Check this spot out and check out the Civil Rights museum a few blocks away. They also have a vending maching you can buy cigarettes and condoms from, awesome. read more

A staple in the community. No frills here. Just great chicken at a great price. Always to go. The staff has gotten better over the years as far as being more friendly, which is much appreciated. ***Excellent*** fried chicken. Green Acres specializes in wings, and they make the best fried wings I have ever had. They offer a variety of sauces, but my preference is plain with salt and pepper. I confess that I am not so much a fan of hot wings as a lover of fried chicken, so if you are a hot wings fan you might want to try the sauces. Now this restaurant is *not* a secret. It is very crowded at lunch time on the weekdays with people who work downtown. It is a take-out place, so I recommend calling your order in ahead of time and going to pick it up. Otherwise you are going to wait a while for your order to come up unless you visit when business is slow. Apart from the awesome chicken I can't tell you much. The French fries are about average. Apparently this place is always a finalist for Steve Harvey's best fried chicken in America. I just didn't see it. The fried chicken was good, but not amazing. It's only chicken wings, no breasts/thighs/drumsticks etc. The fries that come with it are kinda soggy, and the wings themselves aren't super crispy either. There's no amazing seasoning or anything, it's just solid. The lady behind the counter is super charming though. There's no place to place to sit down but you can stand by the counter. read more

This was my first time coming to this location. I was trying to call in an order before I got here, I'm on a time restraint and every time I called the line was busy. I enjoy their food so I just drove on over to get some food, when I arrive at the location there are 2 workers at the counter and 3 in the kitchen so I'm like why no one answered the phone ?? NO THANKS! We decided to try this little "to go" cafe after realizing that our original choice did not have what we wanted. Also, it is literally located one block from the Civil Rights Institute). It is very straight forward as you simply, walk in, place your order and wait for your number to be called. They basically have fried food options and burgers. As a tried and true southern girl, I had to get the catfish. Just the thought of it made my mouth water. I ordered a simple filet with fries and my husband decided on the cheeseburger. My husband's burger was just average because it was reportedly too dry. My order came with two slices of white bread, (old school move). For what? I threw the bread away because I did not order a sandwich. Anyway, I was glad that I had requested the hot-sauce because the fish and fries had no seasoning what so ever and I would not have been able to eat them otherwise. There were also no utensils in the bag and we had taken our order to go. Not a good move! I don't have high blood pressure and I don't need to be treated as if I do. 1st time in Birmingham so we went to the Civil Rights Institute (awesome) and decided we needed to eat before traveling on to NC. Looked for places to eat and Green Acres Cafe popped up. We had no idea that it was in the historic 4th Ave district we had just learned about! We met the most delightful people. At Green Acres we ordered catfish sandwiches, fried chicken livers, and fried green tomatoes. Everything was cooked to perfection and delicious!! The prices were incredibly reasonable as well. Originally had intended on dining at the Irondale Cafe, but I arrived in between lunch and dinner. I had then decided on trying out Green Acres. I had the chicken wings with fries and bread. My first impressions of the food was that it looked very skimpy. The wings were very small, very salty and very greasy. The fries were average at best, but nothing special, and the bread was literally white bread. Overall I am unhappy with my experience there, if I wanted greasy salty deep fried chicken I would have gone to popeyes. read more

Best. Chicken. Ever. I literally drove from Atlanta to come get this chicken. It was completely worth it and I will be back next time I'm in Alabama. There was a very long line and the woman at the counter was very sweet. They were fast and very pleasant workers. For this to be a place of so called business they sure are don't act like as such, I was trying to place an order for lunch as usual I try to support this historical place but I am at my wits end with trying to plaster on fake pleasantries when they keep acting as though they don't know the meaning of customer service. Back to the jest of this..I was calling trying to place my order when I was placed on hold for freaking 4 minutes. After holding so long and no one acknowledged the phone after me hearing her ring up several customers and handing out 4 orders, I hung up after I heard 95! Called back only to get a bust signal for the next 10 minutes, I am tired of patronizing any business that doesn't know the meaning of customer service and this place has become the worst! I thought it was getting better after the other rude lady left but they replaced her with another one. I just CAN'T with this place anymore. Both where pretty average, and the fries were pretty bleak (they were barely cooked and floppy). This place was perfect for a quick, easy, and delicious meal. It has perfect prices for everything as well. The people who were helping us were very nice as well. The grilled cheese is exactly what I would look for in a grilled cheese the only problem was it was a little small. But the fries, fried tomatoes, and wings were delicious as well. I first tried them in 1982 when they were in the original shop a couple doors up. It was unbelievably amazing. The wings were not only whole but huge. I would order mine all the way, extra everything. They would be covered in an orange colored sauce that was really hot but tasted so good. Sad to say now that the wings are so small that they look like they came off a skinny yard bird. And now I practically beg for lots of sauce but it's always little blotches of mainly ketchup and mustard with very little hot sauce. Which is NO WAY the same as it used to be. When Mama and Richard left the old place and the owner took over it has went steadily down hill. I it sucks but I don't think it will ever be the same.
