Okay! It's official! The New Green Dragon is our annual, early dinner spot when family comes into town. This has to be at least my fifth, if not more, annual summer sit down visit at this restaurant. Separately, throughout each year, we do indulge in the occasional takeout order. But what's been a constant are these great annual early afternoon family dinners. We can't go wrong as service has always prompt and fairly friendly. Mind you the same servers are still here from when the Green Dragon became 'New'. Meals have been consistent and always served timely. The restaurant itself is always clean, with the same decorative reddish accents and wooden interior. With bright, semi-bright lighting. Lived in the Bronx and Westchester for more than 70 years. Tried at least a dozen Chinese/Asian restaurants in Manhattan and San Francisco. NONE compare to THIS place! Lovable Old School ambiance, though I wish it was in a nicer locale. Cindy, our most favorite friendly waitress, is a real gem. Plentiful "home-made" Chinese noodles and duck sauce are the most delicious you will ever find. The menu must contain at least 100 different offerings, talk about extensive! All food appears to be made with the freshest ingredients and everything we have ever tried has been delicious and presented beautifully. (Sorry, I forgot to take photos). Since having construction done at my house, the guys have been ordering lunch religiously. From their house made soup, to lunch specials and beyond, the food has been clean and delicious every time. Delivery takes between 30-45 which is typical for any spot. My husband and I have even dined in a few times since the last time I've left a review. Green Dragon is a neighborhood staple that has been here for many years serving the community. Through the years there have been some inconsistencies with food preparation but overall it's never anything major. They serve the classic Chinese American fare. I really enjoy their wontons and their ribs the most. Many times I do add modifications and they do let you know that it would be an extra charge. Not sure why , but they do and at least they give you an option to deny or accept. The waitstaff is very friendly and can be alittle shy in the beginning to new comers. When it comes to plain broccoli in brown sauce at Chinese take-outs, I'm picky. Really. Picky. And no, not every take-out joint in The Bronx makes the dish the same and nor do they yield the same, exact brown sauce. I have my tried and true Throggs Neck spot- but this time, I wanted to venture away from my norm. Located on E. Tremont & Miles Aves. in Throggs Neck, Green Dragon is a 2-in-1 restaurant with Chinese food items AND sushi. It was nice seeing a smoothie and juice menu- but they're not being made nowadays. I placed and waited for my Broccoli+Crispy Tofu and Tuna+Avocado roll orders on the spot to take to work with me- but definitely order online instead. Sushi was rolled neatly and didn't fall apart. While the broccoli+tofu were plentiful and tossed together in their brown sauce nicely at the end, I was looking for more of a deep umami flavor of soy sauce and oyster sauce with that amber color- plus a real crisp in the broccoli that was missing here. I hate to say that the quality of this place is starting to fall off. I've been coming here off and on for years as my daughters activities are in the area. A staple I get is chicken and broccoli. Fried wings. Boneless bbq ribs. All good and haven't failed yet. I have noticed the wings aren't AS flavorful as they used to be but they are still good. If you dine in the give you wonton chips with duck sauce and I think some kind of honey mustard. The kid loves them and they are good. They also will give hot tea. Their portions are also large with combos coming with a roll and soup. Where they are declining. In recent times I've offered for pick up and some times who ever answers has a nasty attitude. This last time I asked for a small amount of bbq sauce to be put on the wings (they've done in the past) and I was told no but they will put it on the side. Came in during lunch. Wasn't alk that busy. 1 other table, then people started trickling in. There was only one server, but she was quick and attentive. They give out fried wonton strips to eat with sweet and sour or mustard sauce to snack on. The lunch special was a great deal. I got a wonton soup, sweet & sour chicken with pork fried rice. It was a good portion. I surprisingly finished it all and was in a food coma after, but also very thirsty. I was skeptical of how hot the food was gonna be with how fast it came out. It was still piping hot. The wonton filling was just a Chinese sausage. The sweet & sour chicken wasn't just batter. Every piece had chicken. The pork fried rice had a good smoked wok taste. I am upset and deeply hurt by what my family and I experienced tonight. We are regular patrons of this restaurant and usually always have a decent experience. However, tonight was different, as soon as we walked in I noticed they weren't as welcoming as prior experiences. The manager who also serves as a hostess barely lifted her head up to greet us and once she did, she annoyingly pointed to the table where we usually sit, as if to say, "just sit down". We sat and we placed our orders. I ordered curry shrimp, but asked if they could make it without onions and peas, the waitress said that would be extra. I thought it strange that an exclusion request would be additional, so I declined and figured I would take it out myself. There were other mild grievances we had throughout the course of the night that we ignored but what put the icing on the cake was when we received our bill. As I look at the check I noticed that the waitress handwrote the gratuity on the check. While I have been to restaurants that have clearly stated in their menu or signage that parties over a certain size or dollar amount will have a gratuity or service charge automatically added. However, this was not the case, our party consisted of just my husband, 1 year old daughter, 1 month old son, and I and our bill was $60. This was not stated anywhere, and based on the fact that it was written in and not printed I knew this was not standard practice. I asked the waitress why this was added, and was this added to all the other checks. She nervously chuckled and walked away. I then started to ask the other waitress who is more experienced and I asked her to see the other checks from the night to see if gratuity was handwritten in as well. She said that her manager told her to add it to our check. I walked over to her manager and demanded an answer and this woman literally looked me in my face and said, "We only add it to SOME customers". So I said, well what's the criteria, is it the black ones? She said we add it to the customers we think aren't going to tip. I told her that she is a Racist and she should be ashamed of herself as we ALWAYS come here and tip 25% and higher. To add insult to injury the other waitress comes out from the back with another receipt with handwritten gratuity added, and said this was her black table earlier and they paid and didn't complain. At this point even my timid husband who was trying to calm me down this whole time, was pissed, and said "wow, do you realize that isn't okay? " Needless to say I will be reporting and filing a complaint with the city. I wouldn't recommend this place to a dog. I kindly request that people don't patron here, no matter your race. Injustice is injustice everywhere, and I was deeply hurt to have experienced this. They weren't even apologetic, they felt justified by their actions. read more

Since it's been almost three years since my initial review, I thought Green Dragon was due for an update. The Bronx is saturated with Chinese takeout spots and for the most part they're all pretty run-of-the-mill. Some are better than others, but none of them are truly outstanding. I want to give credit where credit is due, and for me Green Dragon is one of the better of the bunch. Green Dragon gets brownie points right out the gate for me because they have an actual dining room where you can sit and eat (not just those generic few tables at takeout spots). Does this make the food better? Not necessarily - but for aesthetic purposes I sometimes like to sit down in an actual restaurant and eat Chinese. Most importantly though is the food; I wouldn't say the food is amazing, but it's better than other Chinese places I've been to. Their soups are tasty, the crispy wontons aren't too greasy, and they don't skimp with the proteins in their mains. That, coupled with the friendly service makes Green Dragon a yes for me. The food here was okay, a little salty, more like Chinese take out quality. I ordered garlic shrimp which was watery and I had to clean my shrimp of it's black sand vein that runs along it's back. Service was okay, but It's a little too dark inside the restaurant. Also, they charge you extra if you want to take the fried noodle chips from your table home with you aren't they going to throw it out anyways? I didn't really enjoy this experience, I would've much rather bought my favorite Chinese take out and enjoyed it at home then have Chinese take out in a dark Chinese restaurant. Green Dragon is one of those spots where you go back because the food is good despite the reception or service you may or may not get depending on the day and the server. Sometimes it's wonderful and other times you are left asking yourself.... "Self?... My self said what? Girl why do you even bother? Because that chicken lo mein or shrimp & Broccoli was calling my name. That's why! Oh you, Right!" I digress, a nice intimate dine-in Chinese restaurant, with a sushi and juice bar menu. I have never experienced a problem with my food always fresh and tasty. However, I have experienced my order not being placed correctly and being told that I did not say that when I know for a fact I did because I order it that same way everywhere. Or ordering lunch and being charged for a combination plate or something else. Those are things that are frustrating. So I recommend trying them out. Be prepared to feel out the atmosphere to know what type of attitude you are in for before you start. Make sure you are supper clear with your order before they leave the table and all will be good. FYI: lunch special is the better way to go otherwise can seem too pricey to deal with lukewarm service at times. The food I have to say is good, but unfortunately the owner/manager " LISA" is RUDE, NASTY, and UNPROFFESIONAL. She constantly makes mistake when taking orders over the phone, in which it happens especially in a busy establishment and mistake do happen. But when the customer tells her she made a mistake she gets nasty, and argue with the customers. doesn't even apologized. I've had quite a few run in with her and last night was the icing on the cake. I placed an order via phone for pick up, she made a mistake on my order and I told that's not what I ordered, she argued with me as to that is not what I ordered, when I know what I ordered. Not only did she displayed an alarming level of rudeness and hostility towards me but she SNATCHED the bag out of my hand all pissed off. It is deeply troubling that she has gotten away with such behavior towards customers and she doesn't care how she treats her customers, shes rude and racist. If she treats customer like with this type of behavior, I can only imagined how she treats her workers. I will file a complaint with the city because such behavior should not be tolerated in an establishment that should prioritize customer service, inclusion, and respect for all patrons. I firmly believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. No one should have to endure such disrespectful and racist treatment, especially in a public place and a restaurant that's been a staple in this neighborhood. For years I have heard that the food in this place was outstanding. Well I finally ordered take out and was so unimpressed. To start with I ordered Shrimp Lo Mein, and got shrimp fried rice, I ordered the combination, which included an egg roll, rice (I asked for pork), sweet and sour soup, and chicken garlic sauce. The soup was almost hot, the rest of the food was warm at best. The garlic sauce was way too sweet, and not hot at all. I have been going to the green dragon since it was located on unionport rd in the parkchester section of the bronx for many many many years.I even went back when I had gotten food poison right before they got shut down for being filthy inside. Tonight I go with a friend and order one appetizer (spare ribs) and an order of roast pork lo mein. when the waitress brought out only the lo mein and stated the spare ribs are are not ready I thought ok maybe they are really backed up in the kitchen,I mean who gets the appetizers last. When they finally bring the ribs we were done eating the main course ( this is unacceptable) now we start eating the ribs their were 5 total( small order) two were small in size and we started with those first Did not see a problem with them at that point.When we started to eat the larger ones the were RAW, I mean actually bloody inside. We notified the waitress immediately and told her she needs to take these off of our check,we actually heard her screaming in the kitchen to the cooks about them. she then returns and said you ate two ribs and I have to charge you...say what? I was mortified that a neighborhood place was more worried about 4.00( that's what she charged us) than the safety of there patrons. Very disappointed! Decided to take my teenager after moving back to the neighborhood and my uncle speaking highly of the place many years ago. Upon arriving we waited a bit, we asked for the booth and the waiter was upset because it wasn't clean. We waited another five minutes before he cleaned it for us. When we ordered he never asked what we wanted to drink, my son called him over and received his coke about 15 mins later. He walked away so fast I was reluctant to ask for one too, knowing I would have to wait just as long to receive mine! His chicken wigs were awful. They were fried in a weird tasting yellow batter. Our pork fried rice was brown and tasted stale. I ordered the three combo in which i was to receive shrimp, chicken and beef. Well, I got two shrimp, because I gave one to my son and I ate the other, about three very small pieces of thinly sliced flat pieces of beef and the rest chicken in a whole lot of vegetables which i did not want. The meal cost about $36 with tax and tip, which is fairly cheap however what's the point when the food is just not edible! Finally, to add insult to injury, my son drops his glass of water which made a noticeable sound. The waier never came over to assist, I had to shout over to him, " can you please help us there is water everywhere?" The table was so unsturdy that when we got up to leave I spilled my water too!
