I recently ate dinner at The Green Gâteau as it looked intriguing from photos and quickly glanced at other reviews. Upon entering it seemed the restaurant was fairly busy so we were a little overlooked, but after a while we were seated by a very serious host. Our server greeted us quickly and kindly, getting our drink orders while we looked over the menu. A little confusing that the menus were covered in plastic especially since there were tablecloths on the tables. The restaurant itself seemed upscale with dark wood and stained glass features giving it an old world vibe. The extensive and overwhelming menu was a little disjointed with dishes from Caribbean, Mediterranean, Jamaica, American (burgers and sandwiches), French and more. We ordered the Caribbean salad, Chicken Caesar Salad and Salmon Risotto which were ok. The server was very attentive, filling up waters and checking on us. It came time for dessert where now I understood where the name of the restaurant came from. The server brought out a huge dessert platter for us to choose something sweet. We chose one to share and although the cake was good, it didn't taste house-made. This restaurant has potential if given the opportunity as the atmosphere is great with plenty of seating inside and patio seating as well. The menu needs to be refreshed and would recommend sticking to a simpler menu. read more

Ambiance is great, interior of building is elegant with stained glass ceiling and lots of dark woodwork. Service was a bit slow, our server mentioned getting our water refilled twice but never did and we had to ask her to refill on her third trip back to table. We found out that they let a couple servers go home early and then of course business picked up a bit and that left the remaining servers busy. Disappointed when I ordered the evening special of duck only to be told when they brought out the starter that they were out of the special. The baked Brie had a perfectly golden pastry crust and flavorful pears and cranberries, however the Brie was not baked to a creamy consistency. While the Pork Normandy was not my first choice it was very flavorful served with the pear, cranberry and mushroom sauce with the pork cooked perfectly still juicy. Finished the meal with beignets, that arrived over fried with crunchy crispy dark brown edges. The centers were okay with the cream, lemon curd and powdered sugar topping. read more

I've been here twice and both times everything was amazing! The first time I got the crab Benedict with potato cake and that was really good! The second time I got the crepes 'Florentine' and those were some of the best tasting veggies! Green Gateau is one of the most popular restaurants in Lincoln for obvious reasons. I have only been here for brunch so far, but the food is good and the ambiance is great for getting together with friends and family. One of the times we did have a server who seemed like she did not want to be there, but who knows what she was dealing with that day. read more

This first visit was not impressive. I came here while visiting family and everyone said how great this spot is. We sat outside, which I don't think I'd do again due to all the traffic noise. Our waiter was nice but rather slow and inattentive. We struggled to get drink refills and our order took a very long time to arrive. We ordered the beignets as an appetizer and they were fantastic. For my entree, I had the steak and mushrooms. I ordered my steak medium but it was very well done when it arrived and since it took so long to arrive, I didn't bother saying anything or sending it back. Like the food, it took a long time to get our bill as well. The menu has some great sounding food and others said their meal was good but I just wasn't impressed at all. read more

This place was just okay... I was looking forward to it due to the overall positive Yelp reviews but for me, it missed the mark. I made reservations for my colleague and I (two of us!) and we were sat at a round 5 top. This was odd because we did not want to sit right next to each other (as this was not a date) nor did we want to be having to talk loudly across a large, round table. We ordered the brussels sprout and burrata special for our apps. The brussels were a little oily but I did find the burrata to be pretty good! For our entrees we ordered the salmon risotto and the steak and mushrooms. My colleague enjoyed the salmon quite a bit but I found my steak to be tough. I enjoyed the flavor but didn't really think of it as being cooked medium rare. The meal is very fast! Appetizers are out within like 3-5 minutes (which seemed a bit fast/rushed to me) and the entrees were out shortly after. The server seemed a little frantic (she gave me a salad and then put my colleagues soup on my bill) but she was overall kind and pleasant! The dessert that we took to go was tasty! So if you are already there, get some dessert. However, I will likely not be back here next time I am in Lincoln. read more

Finally tried the "Lincoln Staple" restaurant that seems to draw a crowd. We're not too sure how patrons become regulars here as I cannot think of one thing that would encourage us to try their brunch again. I don't mind waiting & I expected it upon arrival at 10:30am without a brunch reservation! No problem. The host said he was able to seat us.....eventually. He (possibly management?) quoted us 20 minutes for the two of us, which is very doable. We stood in a very loud, crowded, & high traffic "waiting lounge" which was unpleasant to say the least. 20 minutes pass, & then 30.....& after making my way back to chat with the host, we were quoted 20 more minutes...again. After hanging out for close to an hour, we were sat in a corner near the front windows. Our server greeted us & seemed excited to be taking care of us. To start, my partner & I ordered a mimosa flight. A few minutes later our server returned with waters & for about 30 minutes, we sat with near empty glasses, no mimosa flight, & nothing ordered. When our server returned empty handed, he said he "wasn't sure" when the mimosa flight would be ready. For such a busy brunch setting, you'd assume there would be some sort of planning ahead of time. I ordered the croque madame & my partner, the biscuits & gravy. Mine was delicious minus the cheese that had been sitting long enough to form a film. Somehow still wasn't quite warm enough. The biscuits & gravy presented us.... a brick of a biscuit with a very, very, minimal amount of gravy. I'll eat pretty much anything edible, & I still didn't eat the brick-scuit. We split a chocolate muffin which was delicious & generous in portion. Mimosa flight arrived mid-meal & was superb! Thank goodness for that because I can't pick out many redeeming points from that morning. Waiting..& waiting..& waiting again for our server to take our plates & drop off a check. I understand when it's busy! However, I can't imagine I was the only patron feeling neglected from start to finish. Chatted with the server maybe 4 times but they were pleasant enough. It seemed they were stretched too thin; with the chaos it still felt they were "trying their best". I almost felt bad because I can't imagine them having any more fun than I was. For the price, I was unimpressed. How this business keeps people coming back is unbeknownst to me. Im always open to trying new places in Lincoln but if this is considered a "staple restaurant", I question the age demographic in charge of keeping the Green Gateau's lights on. read more

The staff and specifically our waiter was excellent and extremely attentive. There were several specials when we went and I had the beef Wellington that was served with asparagus and mashed potatoes. It was perfectly cooked! We had a bottle of Pinot noir that was on special which paired perfectly with my meal and the others in my party had similar things to say. It isn't cheap but you're not only paying for the quality, the overall atmosphere was very nice as well. You will not be disappointed! read more

They used to be good but the food portion now is half size of before (see photos). I dine in here once a month and order the same things all the time. The most recent visit (and will be the last!) the food portion is a lot smaller than always been. The waitress said they weight steak and salmon to make sure serving the same size but you can clearly see from the photos. The photos were taken in June and July compared to now (November). See it by yourself if it worth the current price. I don't have old photos of the cake to compare but you can clearly see how small the slice is. I give 2 stars solely because of the great service and the food quality (although it is 50% smaller) but I won't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Gave hubby choice from five restaurants to try for date night in Lincoln. He chose The Green Gateau. From the moment we walked in the staff was welcoming and seemed to really like being there. The Olde English pub style, with a cool medium wood tones and stained glass ceilings, feels like you're transported to some other city. We ordered the artichokes and spinach appetizers. I wasn't a fan but hubby enjoyed. The salads before our meal were one of the highlights. That cheese crisp, I could eat 100. I ordered the two proteins option, steak and shrimp. They were both well seasoned. The steak was slightly overcooked. Came with a mountain of potatoes and asparagus. Delicious. The iced tea is amazing. I'm normally not a fruit tea fan but this is so subtle that it taste's refreshing. Finally, dessert... the chocolate pistachio cake, which gateau means cake do it better be good, right?! Its PHENOMENAL! Rich and sweet. Hubby had the Peanut butter banana cake and thoroughly enjoyed it. The espresso is the best I've had since Italy. Skyler, our wait staff, was amazing. Wait staff generally well-trained and attentive. Sunday breakfast/ brunch is busy, best to have reservations. Small geoup lunch usually do not need reservations. Highlights: Brussels sprouts and chocolate espresso muffin! Brussels sprouts $9 - These roasted brussels sprouts were amazing in their maple cider glaze! All the flavors worked really well together and the brussels sprouts were tender with the right amount of char. This was my favorite dish of the night. They came with 3 dipping sauce, but they were too delicious to eat with sauce. Truffle Fries $7 - These fries were good and not overly truffled. They came with 3 dipping sauce, but they were tasty on their own. Croque Monsieur $13 - This French hot ham and cheese sandwich on brioche toast was good. The brioche was fluffy and soft. This sandwich comes with a side of bleu cheese potato salad, hand-cut fries or chocolate espresso muffin and the muffin was really good. It's almost like a dessert cake. Creme Brulee $7 - This dessert came with a choice of white or brown sugar on top. Typically it comes with white sugar, so I tried the brown. It was thicker than the traditional topping, but tasted just as good. Unfortunately, my vegetarian dining companion did not enjoy his veggie burger as it was lacking in flavor. However, he was impressed with everything else and would return to try the other vegetarian options. The interior is quaint. Service was friendly. They have free parking next to the building and behind the building. I got it to go and put some ghost of ancho hot sauce on it, probably the best decision I've ever made ... In addition to paying $20 for a salad my one other complaint is the Avacodo in my delicious salad was a little under ripe, all in all though, it was a salad, it tasted very good and it didn't taste like refuse.
