I foolishly continued on, to their outdated, incorrect Race Street location. Sooo irritating - tried to do the right thing - making "greener", sustainable choices. I wasted a lot of gas. I was looking to recycle some items on a Saturday and my go-to spot (A&J Electronic Recycling) is only open on weekdays. I have gone to Green Mouse in the past but I found that sometimes they had been picky about what they take. I had a printer, 2 toasters, old light switches, a busted Magic Bullet, and some old battery powered emergency lights. They charged me $20 but took everything which surprised me (I think the $20 charge was specifically for the printer). The guy working there brought the cart over, unloaded my car and I was gone in no time. If I had time during the weekday I would have gone to A&J because they have never charged me in the past but $20 was not bad. We had 13 old laptops and wanted the hard and SD drives physically destroyed. Green Mouse charges only $10 per hard drive to remove the hard drive from the laptop, and crush it in a devise for that purpose. And you can watch so you know it's been unretrievably destroyed. It was great! Then they recycle every component of each laptop. They are the best. Just call ahead to set up a time and it couldn't be simpler. They are helping the environment. I was laying in bed today when my wife told me her laptop wouldn't turn on and it seemed like it was swollen. Since I don't want my house to burn down I sprinted out of bed, got out my toolkit and removed the enormously swollen battery from her laptop. I looked everywhere for a recycling company that picks up large screen televisions for free or low cost. Most junk company pick ups are about $100 minimum. Green Mouse will pick up your old unusable 61" television for $25 with fast scheduling. Most e-waste pick ups are free for business and residential. Best Buy will not do free pick up for televisions over 32" and Fry's charges $40. read more

Green Mouse Recycling is AWESOME! The owner lives in the neighborhood and runs the program to help the workers learn valuable job skills in Silicon Valley. Many of the workers are on government grant programs and learn how to resale or disassemble donated high tech equipment. They'll work with groups for special electronic waste events, but for the average joe/jill you need to schlep your TV, computer, cell phone, etc to their place to drop it off. It is worth checking out their cool tech museum up front - lots of vintage Silicon Valley gear (original Apple, Palm Pilot, Console Game Systems, old tape and film recorders - a blast down memory lane). If you are a maker or an artist you can talk to them about getting low cost/no cost parts for your project. Had to get rid of some computers and printers. Although they have to charge for printers with lots of plastic, it's only about $5 each. The computers are free to get rid of and they will destroy the hard drive for you. I also got rid of a ton of old cables and misc things. Everyone is very nice there and quick to help. The lady kindly gave me the information on why they have to charge, which has to do mostly with gas charges for trucking the plastic to our poor recycling infrastructure in the USA, now that China has blocked us from recycling our plastic and cardboard. I needed a place to recycle my old desktop (I wiped the harddrive myself), and GreenMouse was the closest recycling center near me (They are also mentioned as one of the e-waste recycling center on the Santa Clara County website). I took a printer to GreenMouse to have it recycled. A worker came out and told me $10. I asked why and he stated that the case is plastic. I told him all electronics have plastic these days. I told him that they didn't advertise a fee for printers. He just shrugged his shoulders. So, I gave him $10 and he disappeared into the building with my money and printer. There are other free options for TV recycling if you search...Wanted to drop off a 19" tube TV, The fee is per pound.on TVs. I'm not a huge fan of reviewing on-line, I'd rather just thank people in person, but wanted to spread the word about GreenMouse. We FINALLY bought a new flatscreen TV and had to get rid of our very heavy 15 year old tube TV. I Googled green recyclers in the Bay Area because I am concerned about our electronic waste being shipped off to China, where 5 year-olds are paid pennies to sort through mountains of lead-contaminated monitors and other parts. So GreenMouse came up and after reading through their website I felt satisfied that they are legit. I filled out the online form thinking they would get back to me within the 24 hours promised, and lo and behold I got a call about an hour later! She was very nice, confirmed the pick-up address, confirmed I could leave the old unit on the porch and that was that. Came home today, TV is gone! Nicest part, it was FREE. After getting lost twice to find this location it was pretty refreshing to have someone at our service and at our car window before we could even turn off the engine. "We take everything," Homeboy said. All we had to do was sign a paper on a clipboard and we were on our way home. We dropped off a broken -microwave -coffee maker -DVD player We were going to take the glass pot of the coffee maker home thinking that they'd deny it because it wasn't "electronic," but the dude said to leave it. So I guess they do take anything. As we rolled away I even noticed a rusty old lawn mower hanging out of their dumpster. I suppose I'm a pack rat when it comes to technology. I had 4 old PCs and 2 old laptops not to mention 2 really enormous CRT monitors and boxes upon boxes of peripherals and cables. I really tried to find new homes for this stuff and even looked into ways it could be repurposed-- It all worked. I did learn early on that there weren't any takers for the dozens of 100 megabyte Zip disks and my 2 Zip drives. I had accumulated 10 years worth of dead PCs, printers, laptops, batteries, phones, and miscellaneous ejunk at my home that I'd piled up in a corner. I'd have to rent a truck to haul it myself, so when I learned that Green Mouse did residential pickups, I called to set up an appointment. I just had to answer a few questions about what was being picked up and agree to a $50 fee, paid at the time of the pickup. The tech arrived on time and made no complaints about hauling all that stuff out of my house, including some 40+ pound tower PCs. So nice to see a patch of floor I haven't seen in years. This was my go to e-recycle place. The owner told me they don't want to accept most household appliances anymore, because it's all about the buck, not about actually being "green". All I had was a blender, some unused power/extension cords and a small wood sander. Their staff is awesome and are always nice when you go to drop anything off. Those guys get the 3 stars. read more

Awesome place! I had a ton of old, dated electronics from computer towers, cables, telephones, tube TVs, speakers, and a vaccuum. They don't really take appliances without a fee but its not much and it was just really great to get all of it off my hands especially knowing that it wont just end up in a garbage dump. Definitely would reccomend this to anyone who wants to eliminate uneeded, uncessary, or just flatout obsolete electronics. Oh! And also checkout their little museum! First thing: the address given in Yelp is incorrect. The correct addy is 442 Reynolds Circle, San Jose, 95112. Their phone number is correct. They can be hard to find, but they put out signs so be sure to follow them. FREE recycling! Super friendly! We went to drop off some e-waste, and were greeted immediately by smiles and thank-yous. They unloaded our car 1-2-3, too. Highly recommended! Be sure to browse their site for what they take in, and what they'll pick up. They do charge for copy machine pick-up ($50, I think), and drop-offs for someone other than yourself (e.g.: if I drop off something for my landlord, I get charged $25).
