All the times I've come here, the oreo donuts are either sold out or they were not selling them that day. I know they're doing this on purpose to keep me coming back. How does Greenbush not have 500 five-star ratings? It is a doughnut shop. I would argue the best doughnut shop ever create, and it is open at 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. What are you doing this Friday and Saturday at 1am? Because it sure as hell isn't better than eating a Greenbush doughnut, I can tell you that. Yes, sometimes the doughnuts have a lot of sugar in them, but they Are doughnuts after all. Beautiful doughnuts. Beautiful doughnuts with a delicately crispy exterior. Just enough texture to delight and then you get to the soft, light, and perfectly cooked interior. Sometimes they are even warm, though usually not at 1am. You will not appreciate these doughnuts, even though you tell all of your friends and family about them; even though they made you gain ten pounds. No, you will not appreciate them until you move to a land of barren, dry, cakey, awful doughnuts. It is only then that you will remember midnight stumbles to Greenbush after a night of drinking. Only then will you remember waiting for the damnable 6 bus to show up with with warm Greenbush in your hands. Greenbush was there for me when I needed doughnuts for class or work. Truly as good as it gets in the doughnut world. It's possible that I might still be reeling from the charm of the adorable owner who, as I stood in the store doffing my hat and gloves, asked me, "Do you like peanuts?" When I replied in the affirmative, he brought me a glazed little beauty fresh out of the oven (on the house!). I'm not kidding you when I say it melted in my mouth; I have literally never tasted a doughnut like that in my life. Visiting Madison for the week and had to stop in here. I can't remember when I last saw a straight up local donut shop. I was so excited! This place is exactly as everyone has described, Free (and easy) parking, incredibly inexpensive, delicious donuts, and super friendly staff. I had a sour cream and a straight-up chocolate frosted. They were both super moist and melted in my mouth. The donuts are a very generous size. I had to save part of my sour cream for later in the day and it was still wonderful. read more

The best donuts that I've ever eaten. Yes, they've got the typical stuff you can buy at any donut shop. They also have many kinds that I've only seen at this shop. Donuts topped with crushed Oreo cookies. A blueberry cake donut with maple syrup flavored frosting. All of them (typical and unique) are delicious. The staff is friendly and will take time to pick out a random assortment if you ask. The boxes are sturdy and they'll ask if you want napkins thrown in. All of this is handy when you're buying donuts for the office. The shop is clean, and the glass counter makes it easy to point out the donuts that you want. The prices are very reasonable. They are open quite late, especially on the weekends, but close early on Sunday afternoon. Be sure to check the hours before you stop by. It's terrible to have a craving for great donuts and know the shop won't be open until the next day! I recommend Greenbush Bakery to anyone who isn't trying to stick to a diet. read more

The Greenbush Bakery's apple fritter is amazing. Back when I lived in Madison, I'd pick one up whenever I'd be about to leave the state to visit family, and it was a sure-fire thing that it would be well received when I'd arrive. I'd swing by at other times, too, of course. 5:30 AM and thinking of finally going to sleep, but a bit hungry? Perfect time for a sunrise drive to Greenbush, arrive at opening, and get an apple fritter or a couple other donuts. And of course it's great late at night, too. No longer living in Madison, I've tried to find an equal to Greenbush's apple fritter, and most of them are pretty disappointing. They just don't have the apple flavor, or they texture is wrong and they're too greasy. Greenbush's are pretty tough to beat. After several months of searching I did manage to find one that's decently close locally, but it's still just a bit lacking in the apple department. So I'll still buy them, but as I eat them I invariably find myself thinking, "This is pretty good... but it's not quite as good as Greenbush's!" As others have noted, the fritters are gigantic; I'd typically cut them into 8 slices like a pie and each person would have 1 or 2 at a time. But they're good enough that it's also easy to buy one for yourself, and finish it off over the course of a couple days. Other donuts are regular-sized... but try the fritter first, as you won't be disappointed. read more

As we all know, winters in Wisconsin are brutal. To warm up one night, my good friend and I decided to stop into Greenbush Bakery to split a delicious donut. We decided to call an Uber to go back to our apartment instead of walking, and stood by the door to wait for it to arrive. The man working became extremely angry with us and said we couldn't stand inside the store, despite the fact that we had just purchased a donut from the bakery. Let me remind you, it was -13 degrees out and he forced us to wait outside for our Uber because he had to 'close'. It was 9:30 when this happened and the Bakery closes at midnight. The worker was extremely rude, and despite the donut being satisfactory, we will definitely not be coming back due to how poorly we were treated. read more

No wonder this is a bakery that students, families, and lovers of all things baked and glazed tend to frequent. Absolutely delicious and cheap to boot. It is true that certain varieties tend to sell out quickly - as others before me have mentioned, the apple fritters are killer and extremely popular. The Oreo doughnuts and classic glazed with sprinkles tend to disappear, too.
