Honestly this ymca isn't necessarily bad but it very old and run down compared to the other ymcas in the area. Another annoying occurrence is that it takes weeks/if not months for something to be fixed (example the sensors in the sauna) There is a group of older gentlemen who continuously talk about the saunas/stream baths in their original country of origin. They continuously mess around with the heat sensors at the YMCA claiming the sauna here isn't "hot enough" as it is in their country of origin. They in turn mess up the sauna and put it out of commission for weeks/if not months. read more

The facility is in an alarming state of disrepair - particularly the mens' showers. The older men also prance around the showers and locker rooms completely naked, like it's a gay bath house. They need to be told to cover up. read more

We belonged here for for over a year, why?, because they overcharged us and rather than refund the difference to two seniors, they extended our membership. Things are often broken down and the staff is poorly trained. The app is a joke, not matching with half of the equipment that I used, AND no one at the Y knows how to use the app. When you are trained they give you a photocopied workout sheet to pencil in your data. When my year was up I began to look around, even though they said it would save me from having to pay another application fee if I let the membership lapse and came back. Hmm. Tom read more

I don't know where to start. Unfriendly Staff, Old and dirty, Not organized, Bathrooms are filthy, did I say Rude staff.

My wife and I are members here. Everything here is AOK. The only issue is if you have a meeting with a Staff member (not a class/lesson, an actual 1:1 meeting) they always seem to be late. Other than that, excellent facility. read more

The YMCA, or at least this branch, does not seem to know it's own mission statement. Dear Y, in case you never saw this...here it is... The YMCA of Central Massachusetts is an association united in a common goal to strengthen our communities and to develop the spirit, mind and body of all persons, regardless of means, through activities guided by and based upon our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The membership staff (with a few exceptions) are rude, disrespectful, sarcastic They will do anything they can to make . Beyond that, the fees are high, and facilities are uncared for. read more

Old, dirty, unfriendly staff member at front desk who checks us in and he yells that we're not checked in as she starts helping someone else. Disorganized basketball courts. My kid paid money to play and they let the adults have games and hog the courts. Not the "Y" but the "why"? Updated: Hate this place. Old and dirty, unfriendly, and if you're not a member, they force you to babysit teenagers, and expect you to pay for it. Oh, and the last time? We paid and the kids couldn't play basketball because the adults hogged the court, and they "didn't know about it". read more

There are some big pro's and big con's. PRO's: Front desk staff is friendly as is the childcare staff Never have had to really wait for equipment Great and varied equipment: nautilus, dumbbells, sled, ropes, barbells, ergs, sandbags, etc Lots of classes at different times of day to accommodate a variety of schedules For me, the main selling point is the convenient location but I would not go here as often due to the bad attitudes of some of the staff and members My kids can run around in the dance studio (if there aren't any classes) or use the kids room in the winter Splashpad for the kids CON's: The WORST of New England crankiness. I go here ALL the time and the staff (other than the ones mentioned above) do not introduce themselves or smile. It is hard to believe. There are some good trainers like Lucas (who stands out as a great motivator, super engaged) and Jill A. (who will give you lots of technical feedback). Similarly the members are just as cranky. You are seriously hard pressed to find someone smiling in here. I don't know what it is. The culture is not like this at Central or Boroughs. You are not allowed to take plates from 1 section of the gym to another which makes absolutely no sense. How can you get stronger if you can only add in 10kg increments on each side of your barbell as opposed to 2.5#?! read more

This review is specifically for the Greendale branch, although other branches I've been to aren't much better. My husband and I joined just over a year ago and it seemed ok at first. I mean, yeah, it was busy a lot of the time, but if we went together we could snag two machines and switch back and forth to get a decent workout. However; if you decide to try and use free weights or the squat rack at any of the busier I times (anything before about 1pm and after about 3pm) you're screwed. I can't even count how many times or had to completely adjust my workout because NOTHING was open. Free weights?! All the ones I needed were gone. Squat racks? All taken. Pool? Full or booked for something. But, I can usually do cardio because those are mostly free. Basically, if you're looking for a place to gain actual strength/muscle, spend your money somewhere else. read more

I have been a member of this Y for over 20 years and having been going almost everyday (most times twice a day) since moving back to worcester 4 months ago. Tonight was the absolute worst, went to sit on the bench by the gym to put on my cycling shoes and there is a bloody used bandaid on the bench, sit down, put shoes on and ready to workout. When i stand up a woman tells me I have something on my behind....a huge wad of chewed gum! absolutely disgusting!!!!! spent over 20 minutes in the bathroom trying to get it out of my brand new pants. My wife and I recently joined this YMCA. Overall worth the membership, the facilities are adequate. We have not had any issue with crowded gyms and waiting to use equipment. I called the Greendale YMCA on the phone to verify the discount with my health insurance. The person on the phone said to just come down to get the discount. Upon arrival at the Greendale YMCA I needed to wait for a supervisor. The supervisor said the discount was not valid at the Greendale branch. I showed the supervisor the insurance company website showing the discount. The supervisor had to call someone to verify the discount. Once discount was verified I was asked for the insurance card, I only had a temporary card. The supervisor would not accept the card as proof. If you want a hassle free experience, the Greendale YMCA is not the place for you. read more

This place sucks. Each time I went the play gym was off limits and I was directed to have my 22 month old child play in the lobby. It would have been less offensive if I was told to have him play in their parking lot!!!! read more

I have been a member at the Greendale Y for a couple of years now. It wasn't until recently that I started to take advantage of their classes and I love them. I love that they have added virtual spin. Staff are so friendly. My only complaint would be that at prime time (5pm) it is hard to use the weight section since it is pretty crowded. read more

Review is specifically for the greendale branch. Overall, I'd suggest not wasting your time and starting with some of the other clubs/gyms in the area if you are looking for a full service membership (like JCC or WAC) or revviewing different options around the city to piece together what you need. The nice things about the Y is that they do have lots of programs for families, even recently added a gym area for younger kids with a parent. There are 2 pools - though neither the pools nor the locker rooms seem to be kept particularly clean - the warm pool always tends to have a cloudiness to the water. The kids gym offers a bounce house, play mats for gymnastics stuff, some slides, balls and a small soft climbing structure for kids 1-6 Its a good space but in need up updating and some cleaning. Most of the equipment in the workout area is newer and the space was renovated fairly recently. They also offer childcare though you should eyeball it yourself to see if you would be comfortable using it. It is in a fairly removed area of the building. The downside of the Y is that overall it is old and tired. Though noted the work out area is newer and a new gym for families was recently added, this was done while they also reduced their space losing the building accross the street. This leads to a tighter parking lot and often during peak hours you hunt for a space or park on the street. It also feels more crowded and there is more of a load on the dressingrooms that look like they were already in need of a makeover in 1970. The pools as noted aren't the cleanest and I have witnessed a few potty accidents which I suppose can't be helped but are gross none the less and probably the pool should have been shocked before letting people back in. The cost of the Y is around $100 monthly for a family of 3 and most of the services that are offered in the brochure cost something additional. Things that are often free at other Y's even, like Zumba classes, tumble time mommy and me things. None of these are very much, but if you are paying a premium for a monthly rate, you do expect exersize classes will be included. Also the availibility of classes are sparce. For example there is only 1 zumba class offered now - this is clearly the fitness crave of the moment so would be nice if there were several time slots like you would find at other gyms. Also there has been over the years a large problem with theft at this location. Perhaps somewhat due to the fact that the locker rooms are on a different floor than most of the staff or perhaps just bad luck. Regardless, just something to be aware of. read more

Look carefully at the pool schedule before you decide to join this Y for lap swimming - the facility dedicates a significant portion of their peak hour lanes in the Woodbury pool to the swim team, lessons, and classes. The Alden pool is too hot for serious lap swimming. Multiple complaints about the pool schedule get you a "we'll look at it for next season" and no changes. read more

I had a horrible experience here. One day while working out this guy walked up to me an handed me paper towel and cleaning spray insisting I clean the weight machine I just used. I didn't even get a chance to get off the machine and get paper towel and spray myself. Mind you there were at least 20 other people using the weight machines who were not spraying them down or cleaning them. He wasn't even using the machine after me but for some reason felt the need to harass me. When I complained to management about his rudeness at first they were concerned, then it turns out the guy worked there, although he was not working that day. They then preceded to smirk about it. And when they confronted him he laughed it off saying "oh you think I was only targeting you?" I'm a mixed race woman, out of all the sweaty people using weight machines he decided to come harass me. Then it was a big joke to staff. Canceled my membership. Haven't looked back. Horrible treatment and costumer service. read more
