I heard about the Greenpoint Gallery through my fiancé's friend, but I wonder why I hadn't heard of this gallery until only last year! Every month, they hold open calls for artists, and if you're selected, you could win a solo show and some cash. I jumped at this opportunity, and with that, I was able to do a solo show here last year. It was a wonderful time and experience. I would recommend doing any group show and solo show here. I'd do a solo show here again in a heart beat. Greenpoint Gallery is a very unassuming gallery. You'll get the opportunity to network and meet fun people and artists. Many works of art will be on display. Additionally, live music is occasionally played. There is a bar that also contributes to the gallery. The owner is an extremely cool person. Very rare lucky find! I'm V happy this place exists! Nested in the most NW tip of Greenpoint in a walk up bldg. In season (Sept- June); GPG is my first stop every Friday to kick off my weekend and recharge my creative and social flow. It reminds me of Berlin, Tokyo and Amsterdam BC its the opposite of NYC stuffy snob that's standard for gallery settings. It actually feels like nearly anything goes which to me is V relaxing and quite fun! This is how NYC use to be where smoking was allowed indoors everywhere. They are BYO and 420 friendly which I really enjoy! I've brought dates and friends there and everyone has always had fun and often walked away with cool art they could afford. Its always a fun experience seeing so many artists and I know its awesome for emerging artists to show off new works and network with other artists. I met the staff over the years and they are always kind and friendly. If your lucky; you may see a couple of white wolf dogs! I buy art there as often as I can BC the prices are affordable and I love to support emerging artists. I can care less that the art is exposed to smoke for less than a day. They don't take any sales commissions off the art sold either hence the art being affordable. Who does that!? They do! I know the Gallery is very community minded and helps young artists a lot by giving them a place to jam (music) on Wednesdays and show Artworks, perform and even create Art in the shared affordable art space. I guess if you found smoking unacceptable this place may not be your cup of tea, and there's no elevator or handicap access unfortunately. After having a crazy day I ended up at Greenpoint Gallery for an impromptu rooftop BBQ for an even crazier end to my day. Whoa. GG, tucked next to a bridge I didn't know existed connecting Queens to Brooklyn (Pulaski anyone?), has everything you sort of want in an art gallery. It has: - AWESOME ART. My favorite being that Mayan stone piece in the second floor lounge. How much? I don't think it was for sale. Or the pieces made out of chopped up coins. Ted you are quite the artiste! - COOL PEEPS. Owner and live-in artists are all super personable & interesting. Conversations didn't end. Record collections were shown. Dr. Dre was played. The n-word was said. Laughter was shared. Um what are you doing Sasha? - WOLVES. GG helped me overcome my fear of wolves... Well, the pack leader was half wolf half husky. Whatever. It looked at me like "oh goodie, my Memorial Day steak is hurrrrr!" He was actually nice. "Just pet him, he doesn't do anything." I'm allergic fool. Oh and SCARED as shit, especially when the other 3 arrived. Turns out they aren't ravenous but shed a lot. A CHOO! - MUSICAL TALENT. Impromptu rooftop BBQ turned into impromptu jam session in 2nd floor lounge complete with mics, drums, and speakers. Say whut? Sasha got on the mic... As did more talented individuals. Sasha realized being a comedian is her calling.............. Right. Shout out to Bobby Music (?) who said I was better than JLO. Um Puerto Rican from the Bronx? Waddup! - GOOD VIBES. Don't know if it was the Beer or the island smoke or the incense I used to cleanse people's spirits (hahahah) but this place has good vibes. I guess being surrounded by great art work, friendly laidback people, and good friends makes for an awesome time. Check this place out! Search for event information at GG! Wow, what a "hidden" treasure. This place is definitely off the beaten path and such a find. This is what Brooklyn is all about... The gallery is a few blocks from the Greenpoint Ave G stop and it sits right underneath the Pulaski Bridge. It is incredibly hidden, with basically no signs or any indication of the delight you will find inside. It is equivalent to a speakeasy... I came here last night to support my friend who plays in a band. There were a few bands playing and tons of art on display. And also 4 beautiful white as snow dogs roaming the place, all searching for stroking and love. There are two floors. The second floor is cozy and romantic, with low lighting and lots of corners to duck into, so you can imbibe and discuss intimate matters on art and music. The third floor is larger, with a side room that has a bar. You can get $3 PBRs, $5 Heinekens, whiskey and vodka. I chose to keep a tame and opted only for beer. This place is such a gem and I love when art and music come together. But most of all, I love my friends who constantly show me a good time in Brooklyn and continue to help me discover all the great things here in the People's Republic of Brooklyn! read more

I lately find myself venturing into what I like to call, "deepest, darkest Booklyn," since I've started recording music with my Brooklyn-based producer and made friends with some very cool Brooklynites. They know cool places I know are worth the insane commutes to go to. The trek into and out of "deepest, darkest Brooklyn" is often difficult for me when I live in "deepest, darkest Queens," unless I take a cab. Which I don't like to do because I like to spend my money on my music and booze, not on rides and food. This is because I want to have a life that resembles a supermodel/rockstar, not a carnival. Speaking of rockstars, this place hosts nights of free showings with some great bands and music artists, which was the reason I went. They also had a bar, with $3 PBR, $5 Heineken and I think around $6-7 for whatever else. Not bad. I'll probably find myself there more often, and perhaps look into performing on one of those nights. This place typically hosts art showings on their three floors of amazing varieties of art that turn over often. The in-house artists are fantastically nice and seem to form a nice community that supports an art network. I even got to chat to a few of them about their art they had installed up in the building. I've also noticed that they were very animal friendly and had roaming pets (not during showings), including a very sweet half wolf - half husky, two friendly black cats, and a giant fish tank. I got pretty toasted by the end of the night, which resulted in me losing my phone and gaining a torn pantyhose, a skinned knee, new contacts and new friends. What a great night. What a pleasant surprise! This place is definitely worth the trek. And it is a trek you need a buddy system walking to at night, but once you get there its like stepping into an alternate universe. Makes me think I gotta get out to greenpoint more often! Came out to see my girl rock it out with her band and totally fell in love with the gallery. Thoroughly enjoyed the other musicians perform that evening as well. Great music set a chill vibe for the evening and you could enjoy the artwork more in this unpretenious atmosphere. Two floors of pure creativity.. From what looks like the interpretation of a man cave/medieval castle themed floor to the traditionally well lit white walled gallery floor flipped upside down with the disco lounge room with the vagina neon light next door. I actually got a compliment from my OB/GYN friend who saw a pic of this amazing room! Such a plethora of creative works in all kinds of media. Even a cute teddy bear made of crab shells. You are pulling at my Baltimore heart strings Greenpoint Gallery!! I simply adore you... Definitely a unique and remarkable venue worth venturing out to again! read more

WEll, I showed here several times (art) all I can say is for a Gallery which doesnt advertise the artists, but promotes the bands to it's mailing list makes me think they are masquerading as a not profit for emerging artist WHILE they are really a profit earning VENUE. I was excited to participate but really disappointed, they showcased my really time consuming artwork on a really dirty table. The place is dirty, dingy, and the staff all knows nothing, they simply always claim to be interns... .year after year. Anyhow, it was gross enough and disappointing enought that all of the marketing that I did for my involvement at the gallery I deleted from various sites, and I wont be back. I'll probably delete my involvement with this mock-gallery-VENUE from my CV as well as they have no discrimination in their taste or business practices. read more

I don't know why you could smoke in here among artwork and they had a DJ playing loud music, which was confusing as hell when I came for a friend's art show really late. The art was really nice & the walk wasn't as bad as I expected but I didn't know anyone (and I've found hipsters will never talk to strangers, no matter how cute or fun looking they are). I couldn't even find any of my friend's artwork and couldn't take the smoking and loud music so I left. Maybe if they had some decent ventilation system or people were smoking e-cigs or clove cigarettes, it wouldn't have bothered me so much but that was too much. Not sure if it's open during the day but maybe the vibe changes depending on what time you show up as I was there very late, near the tail end of the show. read more

Biggest task here is finding this artistic blind tiger. Tucked away next the Pulaski bridge, off the effin beaten path. There lays the Greenpoint Gallery. I was invited to an impromptu bbq on the roof. Upon entering the space I was greeted by a wolf. That was half blind. Great! One individual explained to be calm, he won't hurt you. Seriously who is scared of a blind wolf? Anyway after passing the first gauntlet there was more to come, baby half breed wolves. Yummy! Funny enough they were super friendly. Think teen wolf meets Brooklyn. There was a random Parisian woman directing us. Later on to find out she was petrified too. In the end we all became pseudo dog people. I attest this to the god known as PBR. He spread his love to us. It was disguised as euphoria with a sprinkle of variable substances to counteract our phobia. The place is an artist haven. Art school, lounge, bar, multilevel living space, hook up spot, nightlife, Dudes showing of their record collection. It has it all. The owner, a cool hip fellow started a jam session, after we left the roof to the lounge area. He actually has a smooth voice. I even had a chance to drop some rap lines. Actually I was really feeling it. I don't even rap unless it's Christmas. Whatever, I guess this place can make you live out fantasies, says my girlfriend. She even rapped too....don't ask. Of course, how can I forget the art? What stood out to me : there was an an Inca type stone in the lounge area. Next, one can see re-purposed license plates. Which were transformed into a huge dangling talisman in the corridor. This place is just STUPID-PHAT-FRESH. I like, I like a lot. Lets get a "rumor" started! I hear that there is a jam session on Friday nights here and the party will move to the lounge area. Don't forget to purchase some pbr $3.00 I believe and support the arts. ARTISTS, DO NOT DISPLAY YOUR WORK IN THIS GALLERY. I didn't read the reviews before I submitted to a show there, but I wish I had, because several of the negative reviewers had the same experience as I did. I understood that the show was a salon show and that my work would not really have space to itself. However, my piece was really unique (a fairly large sculpture), so I thought it would stand out against the paintings/drawings/photos. When I dropped it off, I talked at length with them about how I wanted it displayed. I was very excited for the show, and although the place is definitely pretty grungey/grimy, that vibe didn't bother me. In fact, I liked how it seemed more like a party than just a gallery. But then I saw where they put my sculpture - in a dark dirty corner where no one could see it. Like I said, it's pretty big, and it was COVERED in bright sequins & jewels. One of my friends said that she hadn't been able to find my piece, DESPITE having seen the piece earlier on Instagram. When I talked with the gallery, I did not specify that the piece had to be in the light - because who puts artwork in a dark corner?! I've curated a few gallery shows before, and it's completely insane to me that they would put ANY artwork here. Particularly something covered in sequins, which react to light. I'm really insulted by this experience. I'm glad I didn't pay more than $5, but I almost feel like asking for that money back because of how poorly they treated my artwork. And like I said, I get that it's kind of a datk place, but to put my sculpture somewhere that people can't even SEE it? Ridiculous. read more

Interesting cool space, but the biggest turn off is the SMOKING! As a former smoker myself, it was always gross to smoke indoors, but how can any artist who respects their work display their art at a venue with smoking permitted indoors. Especially if they're selling it. I'm not spending a dime on art that reeks of nicotine. There were a lot of beautiful pieces tainted by smokers. I would not devalue my art by displaying it in this gallery. It is far too grimy. Gross. read more

Apart from the fact that it's almost impossible to get to this place without a car, there's little that would draw anyone here except if close friends are performing. Which was my case. However the place is entirely forgettable, essentially just a room in a walk-up with some pretty shoddy artwork on the wall, there is no bar except beers from an ice box, and nobody to man the light or sound systems. Not giving them 1 star only because I appreciate the grassroots effort. read more

Omg, where do I begin ? I exhibited two artworks in a group show there. A building/place was grimy, looked liked drug dealing space. I came upon delivery of artwork, it was old and dirty building with big dogs running around. In the hallway, 2nd floor walking upstairs, there were lots of mess. Exhibiting space was poorly lighted and they displayed artwork all over the place. Location is in the middle of nowhere, in a grimy location, no signs and no banner that this is a gallery. I think, it is also theirs living space there. I give two stars for the fact that, at that time they did not charge artist for jurying-in process, because If I had to pay for curation, I would have been pissed off (gallery don't present artwork well and professional or promote). Also I give two stars, for the marketing staff, they do promote gallery very well. read more

I really liked this gallery venue. I appreciate the vision and mission of the curator gallery owner. In a nutshell, the artwork was diverse, the live music excellent,and the vibe relaxing and unpretentious. I appreciated the separate lounge area where you could chill with a drink and a smoke and I found the crowd to be pretty cool. read more

For what it is, the Greenpoint Gallery is as good as it gets (to borrow from Yelp's criteria for five stars). It would be really easy to mis-judge and mis-characterize this place and its owner. I've shown my paintings there in a token way a couple of times. The first time I delivered work and helped hang the show I confess it was very hard to find. No sign... not even sure the number is on the outside of the building. It's all pretty sketchy. Even with the decent directions I'd been given I was at a loss... but I got in and past the pack of white wolves (literally) without much loss of time or limb. Shawn es un tipo único. I'm a very distrusting/skeptical type who has been all over this wide world met all kinds of people and Shawn stands out as someone who... has built an amazing institution from the seat of his pants, a keen wit, and pure grit. I found him through the enthusiastic endorsement of a highly seasoned/respected painting faculty member at SUNY New Paltz (R.A.) and got to know him better because of another of similar description (M.F.)... But I digress. Whoever is curating the music is very good. The "clientele" are hipsters in their twenties and thirties (i.e. not collectors), but they are thoughtful, caring, articulate hipsters who value meaningful interactions and decent art and cheap beer.... oh and unguarded nighttime fun in Brooklyn!!! This place is way bohemian, totally unpretentious, and tons of fun. And a lot of the art is actually pretty good.... some of it is terrible.... but terrible has it's place too!!! And I have no time for the people who paid a $5 entry fee, didn't help hang the show, and complain about the showcased spot their glittery whatever didn't get. read more

I showed art at several shows here. It's a cool spot to meet people who are interested in art and seeing live bands and very nonchalant way to meet people and other artists. 2 floors and spacious. Lots of cool art to see because there is so much space. Owner is cool. They serve can beer which is cheap/reasonable which is nice. Had a lot of fun both times I went and met some cool people. read more
