Small, lovely seafood market and restaurant. I'm convinced there's nothing bad on the menu. I had a poke bowl, and it was everything I needed it to be. Every time I go in there, I get the same thing which is the shrimp on the noodle bowl.(I'm sure there's another name for it.) ..After seeing pictures of other people's lunch orders I decided to try something different. It did not disappoint. I had a mahi burrito. They also had a Hawaiian mac & cheese side - which I never heard of before. I know the south is all about mac & cheese but this one had peas in it and I was all in. I ordered some for later. I went with the Cinco De Mayo special. One went with a Po Boy and the other went with the fried fish off the day, which was flounder. I enjoyed the shrimp cinco de Mayo special. Nice plans of flavors served to with the shrimp; guacamole, citrus, red onions, etc. Daughter enjoyed her fried shrimp and the collards were OK. Macaroni salad wasn't bad. Fried flounder was good. Tuna sandwich was good. Would I come back? Honestly, this would not be my first choice. There are other local options I prefer. Would I recommend this place to family and friends? This was top on my list of places to try in the Outer Banks. Beware that they close around 4 or 5pm. I realized this too late in the day and the meal I really wanted was sold out. I'll have to come back to try the grilled tuna and chili shishito peppers! But my second choice wasn't sold out and it was amazing! I had never seen a soft shell crab banh mi on a menu anywhere before! They used a smoked fish dip as the spread on the bread and the picked veggies were perfect on the sandwich. The crab was perfectly cooked and crispy. The mac salad was just okay. It was a little too sweet for my taste, but that may be your thing. Bottom Line: Fresh seafood and friendly people, what's not to love!?! On one of my family's countless trips to Jack Brown's we received a recommendation from our waiter to try Greentail's Seafood. I guess our waiter was tired of seeing us and thought we should add some non-hamburger variety to our diet! ;-) I'm so glad we made time to head over to the Pirate's Quay Shopping Center to check out this new-ish seafood market and restaurant . What I like about Greentail's is the fresh seafood, friendly staff and casual atmosphere. I also like the SUV parked outside with the PVC fishing rod holders attached to the bumper - that adds some "reel" legitimacy to this place! My sister and I arrived at Greentail's ready to feast. There were so many delicious choices on the standard menu and specials board. We eventually landed on fried okra, the smoked fish dish, "Old School" fried fish tacos and a fish sandwich that was kinda like a Po' Boy. In hindsight, I wish we'd ordered less fried food and really enjoyed some of the super fresh and light options like the poke or ceviche. Of those four items, I think my favorite was the smoked fish and then then the fried tilefish sandwich. The okra was a little more battered than I preferred and the tortillas with the fish taco were chilled and crumbly. Beverage options included iced tea and bottled and canned drinks. I do wish that they had a (Coca-Cola) soda fountain for their dining in guests. The interior was clean and I appreciate that they have some picnic tables outside as well. Greentail's opened after we left in April 2018 and Ms T kept reading the great reviews so we went for lunch on this short visit to the beach. It is located in an otherwise kind of worthless stripmall. Maybe it will help bring some life to the location. I don't know if it is owned by a Mr. Greentail or an actual Greentail Shrimp or if they just did not know the possesive character of the apostrophe. I should have asked. Ms T ordered a shrimp basket with slaw and fried okra. The shrimp were large, fresh and very good......except for the too-heavy coating that they just do not need. It is a little spicy which is nice, but the coating is so heavy it comes off in sheets. The okra was very fresh and not over cooked, but was coated with the same heavy coating and Ms T left tubes of the breading on her plate. The coleslaw was very mediocre, being underdressed, with no salt or much flavor of any kind. I ordered Black Drum tacos and found the fish to be excellent. It came with peach slaw on the bottom which was also quite good. The issue with the tacos was that the tortillas were cold and wet. This something I have never experienced anywhere and is inexcusable. It ruined what would have been good tacos. I knew when I picked up the first one this was not going to work. I ate one bite and then just picked the fish off and ate it with the peach slaw. The fish had the same unnecessarily heavy coating. I would recommend, if you like the heavy breading, that you order the Drum Basket and skip the cold tortillas. I did not eat the black bean and corn salsa due to being loaded with onion. Greentails did not live up to the ratings we read but they are trying. They just need a little attention to some details; lose the heavy coating on the delicious seafood, but keep the spice. Make a slaw dressing with some backbone and actually apply some of it to the cabbage and by all means, learn how to warm the tortillas or quit wasting them. read more

On the hunt for what has to be the best seafood baskets and Po' Boys on the OBX? How about a Poke Bowl or Swordfish Taquito? Whatever you may be looking for, if Greentail's serves it you aren't going to be disappointed. Located right on the main strip, they are easy to find. I'm still kind of excited about how good this food was. When arriving they have the main menu up on the wall and a Specials Board by the seafood cooler. After ordering you can enjoy a beer while waiting inside or take a seat at one of their outside tables. Baskets were on point! All are served with Hushpuppies and 2 sides. Sandwiches come with 1 side. The hushpuppies were prepared upon ordering so they were hot and not overly dense. The sides of Macaroni Salad and Coleslaw that we chose with our Softshell Crab baskets made for a tasty and cool contrast to the lightly breaded ingredients we stuffed our face with. The Spiced Fried Potatoes were like homefries that were deep fried with a crunchy outside and fluffy, tender inside. Spiced Steamed Shrimp... it was good. The seasoning wasn't the famous stuff that is always put on crabs or shrimp. Cooked well, it wasn't a standout but met expectations. Crabpuppies were a nice change from your typical regular fried cornmeal puppy, especially when dipping in the Malt Vinegar Aioli which was not overpowering at all. If they could only add so much crab that they'd be small crabcakes for the same price. Now for the star-The Fried Speckled Trout Po' Boy was one of the best sandwiches I've had in quite a while! The Pickled Jalapeño with Arugula Pesto combined with the other ingredients helped to create a flavor profile I haven't gotten from any other seafood sandwich, ever! It was lip smackin' good and I would have eaten 2. While in the Nags Head area I suggest you stop at Greentail's Seafood Market & Kitchen. You'll thank me. read more

We had not been to Greentails for some time (for no reason) and we decided to go for lunch and we were delighted. The fried shrimp were some of the best I have had in a long while. Wife had a delicious Korean fried chicken sandwich served on beautiful bun from a local bakery.
