I have been to High Pointe three times now: for two spinal shots and one spinal surgery at C5-C6…read more All three times, the experience has been exceptional - from the welcome I received upon check-in to my departure. The nursing staff and medical team are collectively well-qualified, compassionate, and professional. They thoroughly explain the procedure, what to expect, and the proper after-care at home. For my most recent procedure, the spinal surgery, I was impressed with how well the IV was inserted. Normally, phlebotomists have difficulty with IVs and drawing blood since I have rolling veins. Not so in this case! It was probably one of the easiest times I've ever had one done and there was little pain. The anesthesiologist asked a comprehensive number of questions and ensured that I felt comfortable going into surgery. Since I was having surgery on my neck and the normal way to put in a breathing tube would have cause additional stress on my neck (and ultimately pain, even if I couldn't feel it during surgery), he went out of his way to determine a way to insert a breathing tube effectively and without causing pain. I didn't ask that he do this. He did this on this own which shows his commitment to compassionate care and doing no harm to patients. The surgeon did a phenomenal job on the spinal surgery! After I had been dealing with a pinched nerve in the C5-6 region for 11 months, he was able to correct it during the surgery! He removed part of the vertebrae and noted that the nerve "popped up" immediately - exactly the result that was needed. Immediately after the surgery, I had NO PAIN OR NUMBNESSS in my left arm and hand. After living with the pain and numbness for 11 months, it felt surreal to go about the rest of my day without even a minutest amount of pain in my left arm or hand. The pain in my neck (where the surgical site was) is sore, but that's expected and I was told to expect it since muscles and tissues would be moved around, and part of the vertebrae removed. The appropriate amount of medication was prescribed and is able to address the pain. High Pointe followed up with me the day after my surgery to check on me. I gave an update and had a couple of questions for the nurse. She was able to answer my question quickly. I would high recommend High Pointe for anyone considering surgery by one of the providers. The experience far exceeded my expectations!

If a surgery center receives anything but a five star rating, you should be scared. Very scared. Fortunately, I didn't have to be. Being clean and well kept for a medical facility goes without saying. But the staff was very friendly and put you at ease. I wasn't very scared of going into surgery, but I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't at all apprehensive. It is surgery after all, even if it is miles away from any vital organs. Any number of things can go wrong. And the staff there was all smiley and joked around with me to help disperse some of that apprehensiveness. (One of the receptionists was a Vikings fan and made a comment about my Vikings sweatshirt. We had some fun poking fun at our next door rivals.) You had a private stall to get ready and whoever was there with you was allowed to see you just before they took you away. I remember being sprawled out on a surgery table with arms out much like Neo was in the last Matrix movie. It was kind of surreal and very Holy-like. I don't remember much of the recovery area as I only woke up briefly to mumble that I felt nauseous. I didn't feel like I said it very loud, but I heard some nurses scrambling to page a doc to see if they could give me some medicine for it, so either I said it louder than I thought, or the nurses were very attentive. Surgery didn't turn out to be that big of a deal to me other than not reacting well to general anesthetic. With that said, I don't care to repeat it anytime soon. But if I end up back at High Pointe, I'll certainly feel better that I'm in good hands.

Then I don't remember much after that, except waking up in the recovery room and they decided to keep me overnight. The night nurses were great and I had a breakfast sandwich for breakfast, which was actually pretty good. I did some PT and OT before checking out and they were both fantastic. A great experience overall, with super caring nurses and doctors.

I had a 10 hour cervical surgery on a Wednesday and got to my room at 8:30 pm. The next morning (Thursday), the discharge nurse came to talk about releasing me on Friday. I told her my pain was not under control. They did release me at noon on Friday because I passed PT and OT and "upped" my Oxy for pain management. (I really felt like I was being kicked out, and was not given enough information on what to expect going forward.) My pain shifted to my back on Saturday and I ended up in the Methodist ER for 6 hours. They just gave me the same pain meds I had been prescribed and wanted me to take an MRI. I couldn't even lie still I was in so much pain. At 2am, we just walked out without any resolution. It was also a HORRIBLE experience.

Dr. Van Dyck was very rushed, giggled maniacally when he shared with me he is an introvert and only drinks his tea at home (I'm thinking to myself: "Good. Because if you had caffeine you would be a complete freak"). Like I should care? WHY are you wasting MY precious 20 minutes of time -- that you keep reminding me we are running out of whenever I ask you for your advice about something -- shooting the breeze with me and sharing all this info about yourself as if I would care? Why are you telling me about your wife? And your kids? You are the caregiver, I am the patient. My precious 20 minutes is about my health, not your personal life. Both he and his assistant Emily snickered any time they mentioned me having a very unpleasant but highly recommended diagnostic exam done -- which I thought was really unprofessional. I finally had to ask "Why are you both snickering when you say this? How is telling me I should have it done funny?" You're supposedly educated health care professionals, not 12-year-olds. It makes me extremely uneasy that the people I am putting in charge of my health care and medical records are snickering about any health-related issues I may have. Unless of course, these are not health care professionals, but health care CLOWNS. What else are they snickering about? Are they snickering about you and your health too? In his anxiety-fueled haste, the Dr. glossed over a pretty serious acute and excruciatingly painful issue I'm having because, as he blamed the insurance, "It was not in line with what is done in a checkup as insurance defines it" -- so I am going to have to end up going to the emergency room, which is then going to cost the insurance company a lot more to cover. He even did "examine" a body part related to what I have going on, but it took a visit to my chiropractor to notice that I had a tremendous amount of inflammation around my ear and lymph nodes. How could this Dr actually have even looked at the area after I told him I was in excruciating pain and not seen anything, when my chiropractor noticed right away? I felt the clinic was overall not good for anything except referrals. They were on time and everything moved along quickly, but it was really sloppy & unprofessional. And I think this Dr. needs to work on his own mindfulness and stress management skills. I've been to plenty of other medical professionals and no, they don't all act like this. If you know you are giving inferior care and you're going to use the excuse that the system won't let you give the quality of care you want to, then put some energy into changing the frickin' system, you fool. Or go into another profession because -- and I don't care what medical school you went to -- you are clearly not good at, nor passionate, about being a physician. The most I will use this doctor for is to get referrals to someone who can actually do something.

Before I went to see Dr. Klapach, I had been seeing doctors at FairView University for the better part of last year. I wish I had gone to see Dr. Klapach right away. I doubt she would have made me wait 8 months and jump through numerous hoops before telling me that surgery was inevitable. I can't ever get those eight months back, but thanks to Dr. Klapach, I am slowly getting back my range of motion, and I believe my pain is already less than it was before surgery, most of the time. I just had the surgery in December (which went great, by the way! They do it in an orthopedic facility, not a hospital, so my Covid fears were lessened), so it has only been a short time, and recovery for rotator cuff surgery is notoriously slow. But Dr. Klapach and her assistant Bradley are with you every step of the way, going above and beyond, to the point where the surgeon will actually pick up a phone and call you. Yes, I just about fell on the floor the first time that happened. Dr. Klapach really cares, and so do her staff. I am also really happy with the physical therapists on site. They do a great job, and are available by phone or email if you have questions about the exercises. Fact: "Expert" doesn't begin to describe Dr. Aimee Klapach, MD. She does 270 knee surgeries a year, a fact I kept repeating to myself when I was having anxiety spin-outs in the weeks before my ACL reconstruction surgery. That depth of experience matters when you're literally trusting someone with your limbs. Fact: She's a super conservative surgeon, bless her heart. She never tells me what I want to hear. She tells me what I need to hear. I don't want a risk-taking, skydiving bro giving me health advice. I want someone who's gonna tell me that "If it were my sister, I wouldn't do it" when I ask if I can fly to a wedding a few weeks after surgery because there's a small chance I could get DVT and die. She obviously didn't love disappointing me. But she takes her job seriously enough to be a firm advocate for my healing and my body, and at the end of the day that's what I need. Fact: Her work is excellent. I'm 9 weeks out from surgery and my knee is healing beautifully. I followed her directions and the result is that nothing has gone wrong: no infections, no mistakes, no risks, no mishaps. Just steady improvements day after day, which is all I can really ask for. Fact: She has an incredible team working with her. They called me the evening after my surgery to check in- which at the time felt like an incredible kindness- and when I have questions they always call me back within a few hours. Her scheduler was wonderful, and made sure we had everything we needed to prepare for surgery. I've always found it easy to book appointments, and Dr. Klapach goes to a variety of locations, making it easy to find a time and place that works with my schedule.
