You sign them out like they're on a hall pass. My mother's name. My father's name. Date. Time. Where we're going. Lunch. That's the whole reason, written in a box probably designed for doctor's appointments. Then I walk the two people who raised me out to the car and drive them to a restaurant they've probably eaten at many times before any of us needed permission to go anywhere. They just can't remember the last time they were there. We went to the Greenwood Inn. There are restaurants that spend a lot of money trying to look retro and cool. Greenwood doesn't have to. The place has been feeding travelers and locals in one form or another for nearly 300 years. It was once a stagecoach stop. When the Stonington Railroad came through in 1837, it became a railroad station. Later it was a saloon with a reputation for fights and rowdy crowds. Then Henry and Norma Papa took over in the 1950s and began turning it into the family restaurant Warwick knows now. The Papa family is still running it, three generations later. The room looks like it has lived some of that history. Dark wood. Big exposed beams crossing a high white ceiling. Old-fashioned lanterns hanging between them. Green leather booths. White tablecloths covered with brown paper. A massive stone wall cutting through part of the dining room. TVs over the bar showing golf. Nothing about it feels designed for 2026. Good. Then you open the menu. Calling it large doesn't quite explain it. Steaks and chops. Fried seafood. Italian dishes. Burgers. Sandwiches. Wraps. Homemade chicken soup every day. Senior and children's menus. Sixteen beers on tap. An extensive wine list. Greenwood describes itself as American, Italian and seafood, which sounds less like a concept than three restaurants agreeing to share a kitchen. Mom got a meatball sandwich. Dad got a BLT with bacon crisp enough that you could hear it break. I got the chicken parm sandwich. And because I help run RI: The Pizza State, I ordered a pizza. "Research." At least that's what I told my parents, anyway. Half cheese. Half pepperoni. It arrived on one of those raised metal stands, looking slightly ridiculous in the middle of a table already covered with sandwiches and fries. Greenwood Inn has almost every excuse imaginable to make mediocre pizza. Pizza isn't the identity of this place. It isn't even close. With a menu this big, they could put some sauce and cheese on perfectly serviceable dough, bake it until everything melted and call it done. Instead, somebody back there knows how to make pizza. The crust is hand tossed. It rises unevenly around the perimeter, with bubbles and little folds where somebody actually handled the dough. The rim is light inside and browned outside, with enough substance that nobody is going to mistake this for a New York slice. The sauce has body and plenty of garlic. The cheese melts into it instead of sitting in a heavy layer on top. The pepperoni curls into cups, darkens at the edges and brings a little spice. Then I turned a slice over. That was the moment. Look at that bottom. Deep brown almost from edge to edge. Darker in spots. A dusting of flour or semolina still hanging on. No pale center. No soft patch where the oven never quite got there. They pushed the bake. And they nailed it. The bottom had real crunch while the dough above it stayed chewy. This isn't some pizza obsessive's shop with a special oven and a seventy-two-hour dough program printed on the menu. It's the Greenwood Inn. Pizza could easily be the twentieth thing this kitchen does reasonably well. Instead, it's quite good. Maybe that's what impressed me most. Nobody needed this pizza to be this good. The restaurant has been around for generations. The dining room was busy. My parents were quite happy with their sandwiches. Pizza is one small part of a menu that barely seems to end. But somebody in that kitchen looked at that crust and knew it wasn't ready yet. Somebody cared about the bottom. They didn't have to. They did anyway. Eventually the research ended, which is another way of saying I ate more pizza than anyone who had already finished a chicken parm sandwich had any business eating. Then I drove my parents back. For most of my life, they were the people taking me places to eat. Now I get to take them. I don't know how many more lunches like this we'll get. None of us knows those things while they're happening. So I took the pictures. I'm glad the pizza was good. But that's not why I'll remember it. read more

I would make this visit a 3.5 based only on the sandwich I had. 4 stars for the rest. This is a great go to place when you can't decide what you want to eat. They have dinners, sandwiches, salads, pizza and calzones. They also have specials. This night, I had the lobster roll, with Cole slaw and french fries. The hot dog roll was perfectly toasted. The sandwich was full. It tastes good, minimal celery, but a bit too much mayo for my liking. When I first got the sandwich, when I didn't see any chunks of lobster, I thought I got something else - it looked like a seafood salad or crabmeat salad. I was skeptical, but it was tasty and definitely lobster. I did eat the whole thing. I was, however, missing the chunks. Cole slaw was really good, and the fries were fresh, hot and crisp. My sandwich looked nothing at all like the picture showed on FB. Other than that, I would now question what does the lobster salad look like before ordering this again. read more

We needed a place that could host 9 people at one table before our show at the Gamm Theatre (we had one visitor in the group). Since the Greenwood inn was the only place around that fit the bill, we made a reservation. None of us had ever been here before, though we'd driven by frequently. Note: There are no pictures for this review since we were the last folks to arrive! Our first impressions were good. The entry space was clean and welcoming and the staff got us to our table quickly. The restaurant space is big, and it was loud. The menu is large. Like the family chain restaurants in RI (Gregg's and Chelo's) they seem to be trying to cater to parties with varied tastes and dining preferences/restrictions. So far, so good. Service was excellent. Our waiter (I was too late to catch his name) answered questions. Refilled water glasses, and brought drinks quickly and with really a nice demeanor. I had a salad with tuna, 2 of us had tuna sandwiches, one had the eggplant parm dinner, one the eggplant parm sandwich, one Caesar salad with salmon, and I was too far away to see the other orders. I had white wine, and a few had red wine or beer. The wine was fine, nothing special, but drinkable. My salad was pretty bland with a slightly tasteless dressing but what seemed like more than a full can of tuna. (The tuna salad was just as I like it. With very little mayo. Overall, a solid three stars. All of us who ordered either tuna salad or salmon felt this their meals were ok; not as good as we either of those other two RI places mentioned above. Sadly, others around the table were less satisfied. Reports on the eggplant dishes were that the eggplant was soggy, not crunchy, and not all that good. While my meal and my husband's were fine for us, as real Rhode Islanders, I doubt we'll drive the 11 miles to come back on our own, and our friends have already said that we'll make a plan to meet elsewhere for dinner before the next show this season. read more

I would actually give it a 3.5. This is a solid neighborhood spot, but our experience was a little mixed. We came for dinner, and the restaurant was full but not overly crowded, which was a good sign. We were greeted promptly, seated right away, and our server was attentive, friendly, and did a great job walking us through the menu. The mozzarella sticks were excellent -- very large and really good. Unfortunately, the main reason we came was for the lobster rolls, and we weren't told they were sold out until after we tried to order them, which was disappointing. We ended up getting wraps/sandwiches instead -- the Sicilian and the Caprese. They were fine, but pretty standard. Nothing bad, just not particularly memorable. We did notice a lot of other tables ordering calamari and pizza after we ordered, which looked really good, so I think we may have just ordered items that aren't what they're best known for. Overall, this feels like a place where: * The food is good * The service is solid * The vibe is comfortable and local If we came back, we'd probably try the pizza, calamari, or pasta instead. We always go here before taking a trip, it's a great bite before the flight!! However last night we went for dinner on a Friday, the parking lot was packed but we were seated right away!! Our server was excellent and felt like she had been working there for a while. The restaurant was full of conversations but not too loud and my husband and I were able to talk at a reasonable level. The soup wasn't hot enough it had to be heated up more but it was good and hearty. The snail salad could be seasoned more but the snails were very tender not rubbery at all. My uncle said the fish sandwich was alright .My waiter Zach did an amazing job with our service. I usually order pizza and it's pretty good, but tonight was a big disappointment. In the past, on occasion, the bottom of the pizza has been black and I've let it go, but I really didn't want to taste burnt/charcoal flavor. I asked for a new one to be made. The 2nd one had no seasoning and the cheese/topping must've been thrown from across the room b/c there was barely any on the pizza. It was like eating bland bread. There aren't many good pizza places around anymore and I really liked the pizza here when it's made properly, but I guess I'll find another place to have it. read more

This was my second visit to Greenwood Inn, and I hope to return many more times. I ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer, and they were delicious and extremely large - 5 of them! I ate two and took three home with me. I also ordered the eggplant parmigiana platter with sausage, meatball, eggplant, and penne. There was a large green pepper, but I cannot eat green peppers, anymore. I should have asked if they had red peppers. Anyway, everything was absolutely fabulous. The tomato sauce is very, very tasty, so I had my waiter bring me an extra cup of it. I took about half of my meal home with me. The best part of my experience, was my fantastic waiter, Josh! He greeted me warmly, at the door and brought me to a nice, quiet table. Josh is very polite, well- groomed, friendly, always smiling and extremely attentive! I give him an A+ as a waiter!!!! The only item I was not crazy about was my cup of chicken noodle soup. The noodles were way overcooked and mushy, and there were only a few tiny pieces of chicken in the soup. We had attended a school program and decided when we drove by, to grab dinner at the Greenwood Inn. It did not disappoint! Our waiter Sully was fantastic, attentive without being overbearing. We particularly loved that they have a smaller plate option for dinners. We settled on veal parm and the veal with peppers entrees and added side salads. The salads were fresh and crispy. Our veal entrees were spectacular; cooked to perfection and very tender. The new building was very different than the one I remember from my childhood. It was warm and welcoming and nicely decorated. Took our neighbor Monday night for her Birthday dinner. Dinner and drinks were good but the shining star of the eveniing was our waiter, Zach! My wife and I went to The Greenwood Inn as its Website stated they offered gluten-free options (absolutely a must for my wife). We were delighted with what we found. The menu offers many choices for those with celiac issues, including a separate fryer for French fries. My wife had the Sicilian chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. My Philly steak wrap was stuffed with tender meat and was tasty and filling. The wines we ordered were generous pours and Josh, our server, is the exact type of person a restaurant's management wants to represent it. He was friendly, efficient, and very helpful with my wife's questions. Food is good but if you're not a "regular " expect to wait before anyone comes to take your order. We have been here a few times as a friend who lives out of state raves about the food when he visits. We will usually go with him when he's around and he is quick to defend them as being busy. The last time the restaurant was not even half full and the waitstaff just kept passing us by to go chat , not take orders but chat with others in the restaurant. If we could give zero stars we would. I ordered what was supposed to be broiled scrod. It turned out to be an overcooked piece of frozen haddock, overcooked baked potatoe and canned vegetables. I was disappointed. I ordered littlenecks. I order these frequently at other restaurants and these were tiny. I know littlenecks are supposed to be small but this was ridiculous. Also, an order of fries, $8.00. Not freshly fried, just warm. Service was not great. The restaurant was not busy and we didn't see our server again after the food was served for many minutes. Side salad was good but nothing special. Overall disappointing. Large family restaurant that has been in business forever. Large menu, lots of tables, good size parking lot, good prices, friendly service, large portions and good food! I had the chicken parmesan and it was the best I havr had in RI! The chicken was tender, juicy and very flavorful. There was plenty of rich tomato sauce and enough cheese. Our first time there....and our last! The fish and chips, so greasy, couldn't eat it batter. Corned beef reuben had "chunks" of corned beef instead of thinly slices,,,,,,chewed to oblivion. Ordered and app,,,,,,the meal came out first!!! Cancelled it. Felt bad for the server as she was terrific and didn't know what to do to please us. Very loud as there was a large birthday party directly behind us! Where do I begin? Tonight was my first time having dinner at the Greenwood and I was not impressed. I ordered a Malibu and pineapple and when it arrived it tasted strange and was discolored so I asked the waitress if she was positive it was Malibu and pineapple and she said yes but let me check. Long story short it was not Malibu and I was told they don't even carry Malibu and the pineapple juice they gave me was bad. The bartender made a new drink with a new juice and it was great. Let's move on to the appetizers. Potato skins were so burned and the clams casino had artificial crab stick in them... no clams. The dinner... we had fish and chips and chicken cutlets with scampi pasta. The garlic was so burned in the pasta that I couldn't eat it because it was so bitter and dry. The fish was burned on the outside and raw inside. When my husband but into it he thought he broke his tooth. My opinion is just that... my opinion. 1st time coming here for lunch today. On first impression, asI walked in, it looked like a nice place to dine. Was seated and was asked what I would like for a drink. I chose a ginger ale which was served fairly quickly. I looked over the menu as I was sipping my drink and selected chicken cutlet with gravy and choice of potato and vegetable. I chose mashed potatoes and butternut squash. I was told it also included a cup of chicken soup. The soup was served first and was very salty so I let the server know that I was not able to finish it and to please take it off the bill. Next came the chicken cutlet with mashed potatoes and squash. The chicken cutlet was burned to the point of looking black on both sides. The mashed potatoes were pasty and just like the soup, they were very salty. I called the server over and just like I did with the soup I told him the mash potatoes were too salty. I then told him that the chicken was badly burned and overcooked and the only edible item on the plate was the butternut squash. The server did show compassion with me and offered to have me look over the menu again and select something else. However, when he came back over I told him that I did not want to place an order for anything else and to please just take the entree off the bill. My husband had ordered clam chowder and for his entry he selected broiled cod which he said tasted more like haddock. He did eat most of it but said that it was kind of dry and overcooked. I wouldn't want to come again as it appeared to me that whoever is working in the kitchen is under experienced with cooking or there are not enough workers so unfortunately the food is not being prepared right. read more

Trying to stay sane with the pandemic, hit them up for the first time. Again, it being the pandemic, they only have takeout currently. There were a couple cars ahead of me, but it moved fast. Was promptly & friendly greeted, and since my order wasn't ready was asked to park in a spot close to the entrance. Pizza was good and ready in in the time quoted. They say first impressions are important, and my first impression was that it was worth going back sometime once this dies down...maybe even sooner. My only issue would be that if they are only doing takeout and not allowing people in, then to take payment over the phone. That would cut out a step and be one-two less trips the runner has to make back and forth. But not a huge issue and won't stop me from coming back. read more

What a great little neighborhood restaurant with a nice mix of items on the menu, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. We have tried several items and so far the stuffed veal parmesan is not only a favorite item on their menu, but flat out just a favorite item anywhere. Had a great dinner here last week. We wanted a homestyle dinner and wound up here after a hockey game on a cold and blustery day. The place is very welcoming, even for a few kids who play hockey. We had a party of 9 and we're able to sit rather quickly. They seem to be able to accommodate larger groups successfully, which I appreciate. The kids wanted steak, and although they only had larger steaks on the menu (18-20 oz), they were able to work out the smaller 8oz steak sandwich into an 8oz steak dinner for the boys. I ordered the turkey dinner and it was as delicious as Thanksgiving. Other party members had the chowder (really good) and meatball sandwich (ate it all!). Crowded on a Friday night, and the volume is pretty loud from diners at tables and at the long bar. Food was okay - Cole slaw did not have much flavor. The baked stuffed shrimp was not made with the traditional crackers, but tasted sweet like they used graham cracker crumbs instead. Server was great. Very clean restaurant and ladies room.
