This review has been sitting in my mind for nearly a decade - that's how impactful Dr. B's work and care has been for my life. Words truly cannot encompass how eternally grateful I am (but I'll try). I first started seeing Dr. B for myofascial tension while I was at UCSD as an undergrad. I was chronically in pain due to stress and lack of consciousness re: physical and mental health. With each session, I would walk away feeling better - not just because his adjustments were extremely helpful, but also because he took a holistic approach. That's what you get with Dr. B - a holistic approach to total wellbeing. I'd consistently get in the way of my own progress, and he would go out of his way to make sure that I would continue to take steps forward regardless of setbacks. When you're in pain, you tend to disconnect the relationship between mind and body - you eat junk because it's comforting and easy, you watch TV instead of going out for a walk, you let your left hemisphere control and dictate your life, while the right hemisphere is struggling for reconnection with yourself and the nature of who you are. With each appointment with Dr. B, I learned to integrate my actions in both my internal and external environment and be more aware of what my body was telling me. What I didn't realize coming in was that I didn't just need chiropractic help (which I did desperately need). The physical pains were symptoms of deeper rooted issues. To this thread, he helped me find the right care team for me (and referred me to exceptional mental health professionals, vetted by him to make sure they would be a right fit for my personal journey). His unique approach to holistic care ultimately helped change the trajectory I was on - I credit him for playing a huge role in my ability to succeed to this day, in spite of any hurdles. I came to Greg Berkoff for shoulder pain after having spent 2 mos in physical therapy. It turned out they had misdiagnosed me with a rotator cuff injury and he was the first to get it right. After treating me for a frozen shoulder, the pain went away and the problem resolved. Probably a decent chiropractor but he is not interested in that - he wants to be a 'life coach'. If I wanted a life coach, I can assure you it wouldn't be someone with such strong indications of being disreputable. His whole approach was frankly laughable. I've been to many chiropractors and they have done great things for me but he was trying to spin a yarn. You can see it in the other reviews as well - I get that some people probably like his level of attention, his awkward unawareness of personal space and his self-serving smugness. Went here to discuss his diet plan. His opening line was "I like to reject about half of the applicants". After a $75 appointment and another 20 minutes of demeaning, condescending and egotistical monologuing finally rejected me from the program. At several points he repeated his philosophy of essentially "have more self control". If I had that, why would I need you? I was very put off by his demeanor and holier than thou attitude. Maybe it works for some people, but in general it just came off as rude. He should stick to chiropracting. read more

A good chiropractor takes his time to diagnose your pain and problems. The fact that Dr. Berkoff does his business out of a medical doctor group office says a lot - they have confidence in him. There's few chiropractors that'll bother to diagnose your situation. When I came to Dr. Berkoff, I had severe low back pain. He went through the usual test battery to check for pinched nerves and a history of injury - I had neither. Then he had me get an MRI and wouldn't treat me until I did. Once my films came back, he made the diagnosis and started me on a diet plus an exercise program - that's right. Two years later, my back pain is manageable and rather low. I'm healthy and have strong ab / core muscles. Good stuff: - Fast appointments: you're in and gone in under 30 minutes - You'll get a diet and exercise program - Friendly - Lasting results - Conscientious There's no bad to speak of really. After seeing Dr. Berkoff for the first time, I was so impressed and appreciative that I just knew I had to hop on the computer and write a review documenting my experiences. I came in to resolve lower back pain induced by a recent injury. My general practitioner, Dr. Dembo-Smeaton, whose practice is located in the same complex as Dr. Berkoff's, recommended me to see Dr. Berkoff for physical therapy and chiro advice. I was skeptical at first because I doubted the helpfulness of chiro, thinking that simply rest would heal my lower back muscular injury. I'm happy I saw Dr. Berkoff because even before looking my back, he took one look at my legs, knees, and feet and told me I had severe flat-footedness in both feet, which could result in the destruction of cartilage in my knees if I was a runner. Unfortunately for me.. I am a runner... But thank God for Dr. Berkoff because I have only barely gotten into long distance running recently and I am still relatively young. I eventually got Dr. Berkoff to take a mold of my feet to have some othotics made and I inserted them into my shoes and saved my knees in the long term. I truly am glad Dr. Berkoff noticed this right away!! He himself said he has slight flat footedness too so it was nice to get his perspective as well - he wished someone could have told him about othotics when he was my age! Dr. Berkoff is amazing! I was very skeptical about seeing a chiropractor at first, but due to my intense back pain from straining some muscles on multiple occasions while moving (sitting down, getting up, bending over, and even walking were painful activities), I had to get something done. I looked on Yelp and saw that he had good reviews and the location was great (close to UCSD and same office as my primary care physician), so I went. He pinpointed exactly which muscles I injured and treated them promptly, in addition to giving me "homework" to do in terms of stretching, diet, and exercise. He's super easy to talk to and gives very clear directions on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle--and not just in terms of muscular health. Today was my last visit, and hopefully I'll never injure my back again, but if I do, there's no question that I'm coming back to Dr. Berkoff. read more

I have seen Dr. Berkoff for a number of ailments over the years and he has successfully treated and coached me back to health on each occasion. This includes calf issues, back issues, arm issues and sciatica. Not only has the treatment been beneficial, but he has provided maintenance plans to prevent the issue from returning. The last time I saw Dr. Berkoff was 9 months ago for sciatica following a backpacking trip. He treated the problem and it was gone in 6-8 weeks. This included him coming into the office on off days to perform traction therapy. After the treatment, he coached me on how to prevent this from occurring again including continued attention to the sciatic nerve and strengthening the core. I am happy to say I just returned from another grueling heavy pack backpacking trip and I am injury free thanks to Dr. Berkoff's program. read more

I was recently referred by my primary care physician (PCP) to Dr. Berkoff for further treatment of my neck sprain. Initially, Dr. Berkoff is not part of my health insurance network, but agreed to make substantial concessions with his fees due to his professional affiliation with my PCP. Although I am paying slightly more out-of-pocket to treat with Dr. Berkoff (than with an in-network chiropractor), I am convinced that his treatments are worth the additional cost for the following reasons: Dr. Berkoff was very thorough with his initial examination which delved beyond my recent accident to identify other sources of chronic shoulder and neck pain. When I suggested that perhaps I can undergo infrequent but long term chiropractic treatments, I was shocked when he declined. Rather, Dr. Berkoff's philosophy is to identify and eliminate sources of pain/injury rather than using chiropractic treatments as a palliative remedy. Dr. Berkoff confirmed my PCP's diagnosis and recommended a course of treatment which includes chiropractic adjustments, in-office therapeutic ultrasound treatment and a stick-stretching regimen to do at home. I am happy to report that I am back to my pre-accident status in less than two weeks. :) Finally but not least of all, Dr. Berkoff's front office manager, Yuki, is top-notch. I can't say I have ever met a more dedicated and passionate medical professional than Dr. Berkhoff. I have been suffering for years from compensation problems after a brutal ankle injury. My symtoms are a potpourri of skeletal, muscular, joint, and soft tissue abnormalities. He is very attentive when listening to my many troubles and never gives up. Dr. Berkoff was my first experience with a chiropractor. I was skeptical at first because of various things I had heard about chiropractors in general. From first meeting him, I was able to tell he had a unique approach because he genuinely cares about his patients as individuals. His concern lies with treating the entire individual rather than solely alleviated back pain. As a triathlete and runner, my body is extremely important to me. I was experiencing a common runner's injury and Dr. Berkoff not only helped treat the injury but he worked on my running technique, taught me relaxation and strengthening exercises, and an overall awareness of my body. Now I can prevent re-injury because of implementing his lessons. Dr. Berkoff was amazing from the beginning. I was referred to him by my primary care physician and he has gone above and beyond with helping me to attain optimal health. It's nice to have someone who actually listens to the symptoms and attempts to figure out the root cause of a problem and fix it rather than just covering up the pain with pills. He has been working with me for months and not only was he able to relieve the pain I had with my left hand and wrist, he was also able to identify one of the main causes for my lower back pain. Following his advice, I can now run without lower back pain, without shin splints, and without pain meds! Anytime something new comes up, he has a plan of action. When my body was maxed out from stress he decided to introduce Biofeedback to my treatment plan. He has excellent references, such as finding me a Biofeedback doctor as well as a therapist who worked well with my personality. Of course with all advice, a patient must be willing to listen and try the recommendations from the doctor and I am pleased to report that every time I followed his advice, I discovered positive results. I noticed Dr Berkoff has 19 (now 20) reviews, all of which are five-stars. Of those, FIFTEEN have been filtered and don't show on the main page. So I'm wondering if this one will make Yelp's cut. Maybe I should say something bad just to get it past the filter? How about: He is absurdly prompt. If you always run late like me, you'll hate that. Dr B is an excellent doctor for any kind of back, neck, or musculo-skeletal issues. He seems to deal a lot with athletes, and encourages high activity. And beyond that, he's like a shot of adrenaline for getting you focused on taking care of yourself. My first visit here was on the Friday before a July 4th weekend, when my back cramped up and I could barely walk at 3 pm. I looked up chiropractors on Yelp from my car and tried to find one who was open and would fit me in at this insane time. Dr. B. got me in at 6:30 pm. I was curled up in a fetal position on the couch while waiting. After our initial visit I walked out almost like normal. The same thing happened this week (2 years later) and a few hours after the treatment I felt as if nothing had been wrong at all. One time it was getting bad on my way to work on a Monday morning and he squeezed me in right then. Nothing was working because I was in so much pain I could not relax enough for him to do the adjustment properly. He tried again for hours in between patients, and finally had to refer me to the ER for pain meds. It took an IV morphine drip to get me back into an upright position, but Dr. Berkoff spent a huge amount of time trying to avoid that. We saw a pattern of my problem occurring just after high-stress events, and he recommended a psychologist when I asked; it was a great fit for my situation. He does not believe in continuing treatment long term, and says if he sees you too often he's not doing his job. He will teach you an exercise routine so that you can keep your back in shape, and after following it and his recommendation for aerobic activities I have far fewer problems. He learns who you are, what is going on in your life that might be affecting your body, and really encourages you to take care of yourself mentally and physically, and make that a priority. He does a lot of work with sports injuries as well, and I have consulted him about knee problems I had when I began strenuous exercise. No longer a problem. Treatment rates are reasonable, and reduced if you don't have insurance coverage. read more

I can't say enough about Gregory Berkoff and his caring receptionist. I have suffered from migraines for 15+ years and he was the first one to define what they are, and why I was getting them. I have spend thousands of dollars over the year trying it figure out why I got migraines once a week. He as defined them as Tension Myalgia Migraines. I finally have an answer, and he has continued to treat me since April 2018. His adjustments are the best that I have ever received, and he is the only doctor that I have had progress with in loosening the trigger points in my back and neck. I didn't realize how much my fast pace life was taking over my mind and my body. My body holds on to tension, and therefore brings on a migraine when my body needs a reset. He has taught me stretched that I can do in the comfort of my own home, and has taught me and continues to teach me how to deal with stress as a whole. I am learning how to not let my body hold the stress for me anymore. I've been seeing Dr. Berkoff for my subdeltoid bursa injury once or twice a week for about 6 weeks now. I'm happy to report that the pain has diminished by about 90% now. The exercises he has me doing along with the in-office therapy has really helped a lot. Everyone should have someone like Dr. Berkoff in their life. My experience in the past was that chiropractors try to crack your back 3 times a week at first, then twice a week for a while and then once a week (or month) for the rest of your life. To use the same term for Dr. Berkoff as these "Crack" heads is inappropriate. Dr. Berkoff is a gifted scientific healer. I've been seeing him on and off for years. I was skeptical at first when my Family Practice Dr. sent me to Dr. B to address the muscle tension I had in my back around my shoulder blades. I had this discomfort for years. Dr. B told me that if I followed his protocol, the pain would diminish or go way in a matter of weeks (4 or so if I remember correctly). I did the exercises he recommended and discomfort I had for years disappeared. A while later he designed an exercise regiment for me. The regiment was by no means easy. Actually it was very challenging, but with his guidance and support, I completed the regiment. Not only did my body change (lost about 4 inches on my waist), but so did my relationship to physical activity. On top of these life altering contributions, what I love about having access to Dr. B is that when I have a sports injury, he seems to diagnose the alignment and prescribe the right treatment with excellent precision. I think this is because he is also active and athletic so he has first hand experience with common injuries. Lastly, I love that he's always on schedule. I never spend more than a few minutes in the waiting area. The bottom line is, if you want your body to be healthier, I highly recommend a visit. read more

I was told to see Dr. Berkoff by my internist due to an injury that had occurred while I was training for a half marathon. I had torn my IT band 2 weeks before my very first half marathon. I called and his wonderful office manager and she got me in right away (that same day). I saw him 3 days a week for the next 2 weeks. I was able to complete my first half marathon and even though I re-injured myself after he has been a terrific support for me. Earlier this summer, I experienced some pain in my wrist after a lifting injury. After a week, I realized that the pain was more than just soreness. By that time, I realized I needed to get medical attention. I was at Palo Alto at that time of the injury. After two years of lower back pain, I thought I had tried everything...going to the doctor, six months of physical therapy, x-rays, heat, ice..and nothing worked. NO ONE could figure out what was wrong. And then I got smart and called Dr. Berkoff. He had worked wonders for me eight years ago and I am not sure WHY I waited so long. Within TEN MINUTES of my first visit he diagnosed the problem, put me in traction and FIXED it. I was practically in tears because I couldn't remember what it was like to NOT hurt. Hands down this is the best and most knowledgeable Chiropractor I have ever been to! I am a senior and have used many doctors over the years but Dr Berkoff actually fixed me! My last guy said I had carpel tunnel and I almost had surgery.....Then I needed an emergency adjustment and I went to Dr Berkoff as he was in my building and close to get to. In 2 treatments he had my hands numb free and now I know when I do certain activities I'll run into the same problem...it all stemmed from my back. I had this cronic back pain since 1999 when I had my youngest child. The doctors were telling me that it is a back strain. My officemate recommended Dr. Berkoff to me 3 weeks ago when the pain attacked again. The initial treatment that Dr. Berkoff did to me was really a relief. He taught me of an exercise which will help strengthen my back. He also did the ultrasound directly to the area which is causing me pain. I felt immediate relief. He was good.
