Our go-to Greek spot in New York. Every time we fly in from LA we go straight to Gregory's. The woman that works there always remembers us and she's super nice and very welcoming. The top 3 things that we always have to get are the saganaki, grilled octopus, and the cold platter. These dishes are a must try and you won't regret it. I could just kiss YELP after finding this authentic Greek cafe in Queens. It's exactly the establishment that Yelpers love! The eclectic, kitschy atmosphere is only made better by the staff & authentic Mediterranean fare. When we sat down at 11 am on a Thursday morning on a sunny summer day the waitress greeted us with the offer of a glass of wine Loved that but no thank you. I ordered dolmas which are my favorite Greek goody but I'm usually regulated to Costco's version but these (these!) were the real deal. My husband no likie so more for me! They were perfectly wrapped and smothered in olive oil. The chicken kabob plate with lemon potatoes was perfect. Lemon potatoes are another Traditional Greek dish that is worth the carb blast. These were the real thing (consider subbing the fries for these). My husband got the gyro that was a little dry but his dish overall was good. We left stuffed and happy. I was too grossed out to take any pics. We've ordered the pork chops and one was RAW, the complimentary desserts are sitting out for flies to feast, the olive oil and red wine vinegar have things floating in them that scared the BE-JESUS OUT OF ME! I think the owner was actually sitting at a table outside chatting with a friend. The table was at a spot hovering between taking up too much public space on the sidewalk or it could be like the table where they place take-out menus at the front entrance of the restaurant. Yet 2 dudes were eating a hearty meal a top of it. Awesome. The owner got up right away to greet us. The staff was very friendly and seated us right away in the corner outside table. We're right next to someones driveway, separated by a short barricade- felt like I was eating on my friend's porch. The food and convo was just as homey as this. The avenue that this restaurant is on seems to be getting built up with diverse options, but this block is still pretty calm. What we ordered: came out to around $50 for 3 people -bread came with a delicious mashed olive with olive oil dip -grilled octopus (came with cuks and tomatoes, healthy drizzle of olive oil) -grilled peppers filled with with fried cheese (wasn't so great, cheese seemed like a mild mozzarella and peppers were a little flimsy and soggy. I wanted to explore Queens, which is one of the most diverse places in the world. Astoria is known for its exemplary Greek food. I sought this place out because Andrew Zimmern named it as one of his favorite places in Queens on his show "The Zimmern List." It's a small unassuming place with a very small inside. I ate outside and really enjoyed people watching on the patio. The server, who may have also been a manager or owner, was very welcoming and helpful. I asked her to order for me. She ordered meatballs and fried zucchini and egg plant. Both were very good and clearly authentic. The meatballs were bursting with flavor and had a crisp on the outside. A little lemon brightened them up (but they were great without too). The meatballs came with these boiled? broiled? Garlicky tart potatoes with a tasty chewy skin. The fried eggplant and zucchini had a crisp outside and a juicy inside, but was not greasy. Well seasoned with a garlic mashed potato (served Greek style, not southern style) in the middle. I was also given a complimentary little desert. Should also be noted they serve complimentary bread with a spread (plums? Raisins? Something both sweet and savory). Large portions, could easily buy plates and share. The menu is expansive, with lots of appetizers, fish dishes, souvlaki, gyros, and even crab cakes and baby shark. Got the grilled octopus, fried eggplant and zucchini, and a Greek salad with chicken. We also split a bottle of Retsina (0.5 L for $15) The grilled octopus had more of a meat texture than a rubbery texture which was new and interesting. I love the fact that every single time I go to this place, there is at least one group of older Greek people seated there sharing a meal like they don't have another care in the world (which they probably don't, because they look retired). That's always a good sign and an indication that the establishment is ethnically legitimate. The restaurant delivered me a big serving of food with human hair. Not only was a woman who goes by the name of "Margaret," not upset but she couldn't understand the word "hair." I have been eating in Astoria for 40 years and this is by far the worst experience I have ever had. Sadly I am also in the restaurant business and restaurants like this won't make it beyond the pandemic... The same woman will not let me report this to a supervisor (hey Mr. Mister Supervisor connect with your clients!) and is no longer offering to refund me. Took my family here two weeks ago. Very disappointed! Read all the reviews and was excited to go. First waitress was not friendly at all. Everything was overcooked and dry except for my mothers salmon. The chicken was tastleless and dry and my shrimp was so over cooked I barely ate any. Side was the lemon potatoes and it was just ok. I wasn't that impressed last time I had dinner here so I was about hesitant to come back. Well, some of the photos looked really delicious so I decided to order exactly the same things. We got fried pepper stuffed with cheese ($12), mussels with fried feta in marinara sauce ($12), and grilled branzino. This time, I honestly enjoyed everything. The fried pepper with stuffed cheese was so hot and soft. The mozzarella cheese that melted was amazing as well. The mussels reminded me of the fish I ate at one of the Belgium restaurants - they were prepared in a similar way, except that this one had feta cheese in the broth, and the broth was much richer and full of flavors. The was so good as a dipping sauce for flatbread. The branzino was grilled perfectly as well. The reason why I'm leaving 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because I had good Greek meals that are more reasonably priced before and their side dishes are mediocre. I had a bomb birthday dinner here where we closed the place down and had 20+ people. I picked a handful of apps, dishes, and they served everyone family style, basically all you can eat. That's what you get here: family treatment. This is Greek Cypriot hospitality at its finest. I've been here a bunch of times. It is not uncommon to find old Cypriot fishermen huddled in the corner, having a long chat over some wine. The owners/waitresses are always super friendly. Once, my Turkish friends were even allowed to close the place down, after-hours, and blast music. Everyone was dancing, drinking, opah! Places like this are rare in America. And that's really why it has resonated with me after all these years. The seafood is fresh, delicious, and prepared with very minimal fixings, spicing. This is how truly good fish should be served. Grilled octopus. Calamari. Greek salad (duh). Fried smelts (little fried fish). Fried whiting. Tirokafteri (spicy cheese spread). Taramasalata (fish roe dip). Honestly, you can't really go wrong. Just ball out - the prices are very fair. Fair Warning: the fish come with their heads, and you need to bone them yourself. I didn't realize this is unfamiliar (and uncomfortable) for some people, but apparently it is. I didn't think much of the red meat dishes, but they weren't bad either; just fine. If you're (and they're) kind enough, they'll be flexible and bend the rules for you. Make the trip to Astoria and definitely check this place out! read more

"Gregory's 26 Corner" is printed on the awning outside. The owner (Gregory, I presume?) is a friendly Greek man who sits with his buddies at the outdoor tables and shouts good night to you as you leave. Your waitress is likely his wife, a smiling Greek-speaking Ukrainian woman. We walked in on a Saturday after the dinner rush, but many tables were still occupied by groups of middle-aged Greek people eating and chatting merrily. They start you off with toasted bread and tapenade (yet another step in my journey of unexpectedly coming to like olives). For the menu, we went all-out Greek taverna and only ordered off the appetizers section - "Oh, you're getting all the good stuff!" said our waitress knowingly. As far as flavor profiles, homey taverna food is pretty consistent: basically everything can be drowned in olive oil and/or lemon. My favorites: - Tzatziki (fresh, thick, perfectly seasoned; among the best tzatziki I've had) - Grilled octopus (char was milder than I'd hoped but the octopus itself was fat, very tender, and enjoyably salty) - Greek salad (none of this equally-sized-cubed-veggies crap; tomato chunks were huge and you have to break down the sheets of feta yourself. Lovely) The loukaniko was heavy on flavor and juice and quite salty, but I guess all loukaniko is salty. I'm sure the saganaki was great, too, but since all the plates came at once, eating this chunk of seared cheese before it got cold and rubbery was difficult to negotiate. Gregory's is slightly off the beaten path of Astoria's commercial corridors, which contributes to its neighborhoody charm. They recently expanded into two rooms separated by a low divider, but the place remains cozy and old-school, checkered tablecloths* and all. Their house white (served in a copper carafe!) is crisp and totally agreeable for $20, and instead of unwieldy stemmed glasses, you get mini tumblers - perfect for the ambiance. The food is great. But what makes Gregory's special is that your meal feels like more than just an excursion of consumption, where you just get a product and pay someone for it at the end. Came to Gregory's with my family, after going to church for our Greek Palm Sunday. Every other place on 23rd ave had a really long wait and we heard that they have amazing food so we decided to give it a try. We got a lot of mezedakia (appetizers), lemon potatoes, fried zucchini and eggplant, giant beans,rice, Greek salad, ad feta and they were all delicious. I love the fact that you can either sit inside or outside and that for my mom and myself there was a ton of vegan options or ways to make dishes vegan. My sister ordered the bacalao fish and she said it was ok and my boyfriend ordered the special of the day which was wild boar and was a HUGE plate. The best no frills classic Greek food in Astoria: Yes please! The service is always very nice and welcoming. They start you off with fresh warm bread and the most delicious olive spread with olive oil to dip in. The Fried Smelt appetizer was lightly coated and fried without being too greasy. They give you a lot in the order. Great finger food to munch on for the rest of the night. The grilled octopus was nice and tender and simply cooked well. Very tasty but wished it had a bit of a char to it. The Pork or Chicken Souvlaki platters came with perfectly cooked skewers with a side of fries and feta salad. I asked to substitute my fries with lemon potatoes and they happily obliged. They have the best flavored lemon potatoes in the area! Bifteki can be stuffed with cheese if you'd like. I tried the one without the cheese and it was well seasoned and flavorful. They were like round balls of meatloaf seared on the outside but tender ground meat on the inside. I've been meaning to come here for a while now and finally found the opportunity over the weekend. After tossing away a bunch of other dinner options, we finally agreed on Greek and I didn't feel like waiting 20-30 minutes for Taverna Kyclades and remembered this somewhat hidden location. Walking in, we noticed off the bat that the small restaurant was near capacity (ALWAYS A GOOD SIGN). We were immediately seated in the second room. There was only two lady servers but service was pretty prompt. We sat down and after going through our options, we decided to go for the seafood platter for 2 (image attached). My boy was starving and asked the server if this would fill us up, and she insisted it would and apparently added two free sides of veggies and potatoes. The platter came out and was pretty darn good with lots of variety. It was evenly distributed so it made it easy to split between the two of us. We both had baby shark for the first time which was interesting as well although I prefer normal fish. ;) Overall, I would highly recommend this NEIGHBORHOOD gem. read more
