We were excited to try IBN Hamido and came on a Sunday. There was no wait to be seated (lucky us!) and we were told to go to the back and to pick out our seafood before picking seats. It's a little overwhelming because there is definitely a lot of seafood to choose from. The fish selection looks fresh but they do have some previously frozen seafood like large prawns and lobster tails. They have the names of everything and the price per pound posted which can be a little intimidating because it's a bit expensive. We ordered a grilled branzino and asked for the large tiger shrimp. The staff behind the counter said it would be the ones without the head but when long at the sign, it said head on tiger shrimp so I was a little confused but we just went with it because we assumed the staff knew what they were talking about. We did also get the head-on large prawns. We asked for everything to be grilled and confirmed that they don't use butter or cheese or cream on anything and then we went upstairs to get a table. Upstairs by the window is nice because you can people watch on a good day. We asked the staff member if there were any butter or cream or cheese in the mezza or rice and she said no, so we proceeded to order those and also asked about the soup of the day. She told us it was a shrimp and corn soup and that sounded good so we ordered that as well. The mezza came and the babaganoush and moussaka were good. The lemon potatos were fine but other places have made it better. The tahini was tahini and nothing special. The soup came and we took a sip and it tasted like cream so we were confused because the staff member didn't mention cream when she was taking about it. We asked about it when another staff member came by to drop off the rice. The original staff member who helped us came back over and we asked her if there was cream in the soup. She told us that yes because it's a chowder and the chowder has dairy and told us that we ordered the soup. I'm not denying that we ordered it. My issue is that we specifically asked about avoiding dairy in other food menu items and she didn't even stop to mention that hey the soup of the day that you want is a shrimp and corn chowder and has dairy. She took it back but I felt like we were inconveniencing her because of her tone. The mains arrived shortly after. The head-on prawns came and then the branzino. The large head-on prawns were overcooked and a little rubbery. The branzino was a touch too lemony but that was probably my fault for squeezing lemon over it. The fish was firm and smooth. There wasn't a lot of flavor on either dish. By this time, our table is pretty full and one of the staff members came by with the tiger shrimp and he more or less just stared at the full table and then plopped the plate down right next to my husband's phone. We barely even had time to move plates around to clean up space for him, but I feel like they should have definitely looked a little harder because one of our plates was just full of bones and shells and could have been taken away which would have made room for the shrimp. They were also over cooked and rubbery. Throughout our meal, no one came to check on us once. At the end of the meal, I used my own hand sanitizing wipes and was a little puzzled that they don't give any to customers. We got the bill and were a little peeved that they charged us $3 to butterfly the branzino. We weren't told about that and we didn't particularly ask for them to butterfly it. There's individual hand wipes by the stairs and it's odd that staff don't bring them to you once you're ready to pay. Are customers expected to walk around with dirty hands to go grab the wipe by the stairs? It's definitely a one time experience and overall, I wouldn't recommend it for the poor service and seafood being overcooked and underwhelming. read more

Came in to check this place out for the 1st time. We had about 12 minute wait. As we move down the line, we got to area where you place your order from the fresh seafood counter. I noticed some of the items on the display were frozen (red head shrimp) was one of the items. While they do not weight the seafood in front of you. The list the prices up front, so that was somewhat awkward process?? I ask for octopus, scallops, smelts, and a red snapper . The octopus was the most expensive item, it was marked $45 a pound.. We were then sent to 2nd floor for seating. Since we needed a table for 2, we got a very small table near the stairs. The table was so small, we knew right away that it be an issue given the amount of food we ordered. Our waitress came by and we added grilled eggplant, lemon potatoes and the beat salad. The brought us a small basket of pita like bread, hot, fluffy and delicious. So we had all the appetizers but the food took 30 mins and from the looks, it dis not seemed busy. In my opinion, the side dishes should be brought out with main courses but i guess thats NOT what they do here. I recalled asking at the counter for light seasoning on the red snapper. When the fish came to the table, it had some type of breadcrumbs and oil or butter. Which in my opinion is not bad but i appreciate the unique texture and flavor red snapper has all on its own. The octopus was good but i never had it sliced looking like bacon strips. Tasty but different, scallops had a little paprika, cooled perfectly. The smelts were fried just perfectly, like good french fries. I assume this restaurant is a mix of middle-Mediterranean cooking style. Food was tasty, style of service was definitely different. I will come back and try the lunch specials during the week. As a side note, accessing the restrooms was very confusing, they have 2 restrooms, there was a line to get into the restrooms. So, perhaps I'm super biased. I've had exceptional Egyptian seafood. This was not that. It was good enough. So, perhaps if i knew less, this would be very good. But I found it mostly mediocre. My companions found it delicious. The wait on father's day at 2:30 pm, to just get in and order was over an hour. The food: the best we had was the grilled octopus - it was thinly sliced and mildly spiced, but cooked to perfection. The pasta was also delicious! The fried smelt was very disappointing, no flavor no crunch on the outside. I was told that the scallops and the shrimp were great. They looked great. The appetizers we disappointing. The babaganoush, the tahini, the beets, the eggplant and the salad all lacked flavor. The bread was just heated up pocket pita... the mint limeade was fine. The fries were fine. Was visiting from out of town with a friend back in March and my cousin and his girlfriend recommended this place for dinner one night. We got in line around 7:30 pm on a Sunday and waited about an hour to order our food and another 20 minutes or so to be seated. You pick all the seafood you want first and how you want it prepared. Once you're seated, you get another menu with appetizers and other cooked dishes. Your seafood gets brought out along with any other dishes you ordered. Everything we got was really good and cooked to perfection. It was such a unique experience as well. Everyone on social media has been raving about Hamido Seafood so I was hyped to finally try this place out. When you walk in, they give you a rundown of the place: you tell the fish monger what seafood you'd like to have and how you want it cooked and then you can be seated and order sides/drinks. The display of fresh seafood was so cool to see and we decided on a red snapper and 1/2 lb scallops, both grilled. We got a side of their rice and the garlic eggplant which came with warm pita. We had it prepared their traditional way. When we sat at a table, we chose from the $19.99 Lunch Menu (which is served daily from 12-4). Mixed Shrimp and Calamari and the Shrimp and scallops linguine. The best dish was the linguine. It was flavorful and without oil or butter. LOVED IT! Oh, I almost forgot about the fresh bread served with the sides I chose. Which were the cucumber salad and lemon potatoes. If you're looking for alcohol this restaurant doesn't serve it at all. They don't tell you the weight of your item and if you want a smaller portion, they say no this is all I can do. The wait for the food is about 45 minutes-1 hour (on a rainy Thursday). This spot was MP Taverna years ago and now has been transformed into a pick-your-own seafood restaurant. It's similar to Astoria Seafood with Mediterranean tastes, but goes further east with an Egyptian twist. On this night, our timing was good and we were lucky to arrive at IBNHS just before 9pm after picking up my BIL from LGA and got a free parking space right outside the restaurant. The dinner rush was winding down, the line was reasonably short and we still had plenty of time to enjoy our dinner. Get your table number from the host at the front, go to the back to pick out your fresh seafood chilling on ice and get shown to your table. We had a table upstairs by the window overlooking Ditmars Blvd. Being our first time, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and chose our favorites: One pound each of Squid, Scallops, Octopus, Tiger Shrimp and a 1.4 lb whole Bronzini. I was tempted get a whole lobster from the tank, but held back. At our table, we ordered drinks and side dishes: A pitcher of Spiced Mint Lemonade, Hamido Salad, Lemon Potatoes, Seasoned Fries, Garlic Eggplant and 2x Seyadya Rice. Everything came at a fast clip, starting with Fried Calamari and soon dishes overflowed the table. I had to consolidate a few plates as each dish showed up. A little overwhelmed, I tried everything. The calamari was nicely breaded, crispy and flavored just right with a marinara dipping sauce. The scallops were perfectly seasoned & seared and for 1.1 lbs there were 16 of them, an even split for 4 people. The Grilled Tiger Shrimp were my favorite with a good char and seasoning. The Grilled Octopus was thinly sliced, not whole like I was expecting, but was still pretty good. I had specified the Bronzini to be plain grilled whole by one of 2 methods chosen by the picture on the wall, but it came out butterflied & coated in spices. If you read the signs, all seafood have a $4/lb added to the base price for cooking, but the butterflying was an additional $4 on top of that. Went on a Saturday night, and only had to wait 15 minutes for a table. This new location is much bigger with more ample seating. When my dear uncle announced his arrival to New York on a work trip two days before my birthday, and offered to take me anywhere I wanted, Hamido Seafood is the first place that popped in to my mind. I had been dying to try this Astoria Queens institution for a very long time, and had saved it for the right occasion and then finally, the occasion arrived! This establishment encompasses the heart of coastal cuisine in little Egypt, and as a first time visitor I was completely blown away. As you enter the establishment the monstrosity of this double story brightly lit restaurant greets you. The clean and self explanatory seafood case calls out your name. Ahh Egyptians, my long lost soul tribe from another universe. A kind Egyptian man greets you to go over their various cooking styles. If it's your first time like ours was, I recommend listening to his suggestions as the staff truly does know best. We went with grilled shrimp, butter scallops and a whole branzino with a spicy sauce. You are assigned a table number once you pick your seafood of choice, and the staff then helps you make yourself comfortable in their expansive dining hall. We made our way upstairs and got seated. The restaurant had a number of patrons, impressive for a Wednesday night. We ordered our sides with the waiter upstairs. Beet salad, potatoes and Greek salad. I had low expectations of the sides but oh my God was my mind blown away. This is the best Greek salad I have had in my entire life, and this is high praise because I make a really mean Greek salad myself. I immediately need to get a hold of where they buy their feta cheese from because it was the softest, pillowiest most delicious feta I have EVER tasted. The beet salad was bright and beautiful, perfectly seasoned with olive oil and lemon, and just allowing the natural flavor of the beets to shine through in perfect culinary temperance. When our seafood arrived, my jaw dropped to the floor. The barbecue shrimp was charred perfectly, not overcooked and juicy and moist. Seasoning was absolutely perfect, so as to allow the taste of the seafood to shine through. Scallops were buttery and crusty on the outside and melt in your mouth. The Branzino was an absolute showstopper. The sauce was buttery and mildly spiced, perfect for such a beautiful delicate fish. We washed down our food with mint lemonade which was fresh and fragrant and not too sweet. This was one of the most memorable seafood meals I've had and after dining here I finally understood what the fuss was really about. I loved their house seasoning. Our favorites were the garlic pasta, branzino, and grilled shrimp and calamari. We were lowkey disappointed with the scallops we paid market price for. This is like the much faster version of Astoria Seafood (if you know you know). There are preset menus to choose from such as their lunch special, along with an option to pick the type of seafood and type of preparation you want on it. The service is friendly and they'll give you recommendations on best preparation methods for each fish, since there are so many that it definitely gets a bit overwhelming. My favorite are the scallops and fried calamari. The fried calamari was extremely fresh and probably up there for top 3 calmaris that I've had at a restaurant. The salads and dips on the side are also refreshing and serve as a good break from the seafood dishes. Service isn't as fast as a normal sit down restaurant, but that amounts to the seafood being prepared to your style fresh, so do be prepared to wait a little longer. All in all, I think the quality and quantity of what you get is well worth the wait, and I will definitely be coming back again. read more

This place is great if you are craving seafood. I have visited here twice now and really enjoy it. I usually get the red snapper butterfly style and calamari. The second time we also tried the seafood stew which is honestly soo good. I would definitely recommend this to any seafood lover. We also tend to order the rice as a side. The butterfly cut is an extra charge and also if you ask them to debone the fish, they charge for that too. However, the fish still has a decent amount of bones. Next time we will not ask for it to be deboned. There is usually a wait and they don't take reservations. The food is good though and it is nice seeing the fresh seafood. read more

First time having Egyptian seafood, but what a fun concept to pick your own seafood! Fish prices are reasonable, shellfish is decent, but octopus prices were a little crazy at $48/lb. For 8 people, we ordered two fish (snapper + sea bass), grilled clams, 2 lbs of grilled tiger shrimp, and scallops. Once seated, there's also numerous sides that can be ordered. I was a bit confused initially if this was greek seafood or egyptian, since the sides had a bunch of greek options. Highly recommend the moussaka eggplant, tahini, and baba ghanoush. All of the seafood was cooked really well, but I'd pass on the fried seabass. Overall - great Sunday lunch option. Come early to look for parking & to beat the lines. Finally made it out to Astoria for some much hyped fresh seafood at Hamido. This Egyptian seafood restaurant is one of the few in the area competing on "market to table" concept where you pick what you want from a display and how you want it prepared. Most other non seafood options are med style meze like babaganoush or hummus. Salad options are there as well while you wait for your chosen seafood. We opted for over baked options for fish as well as some scallops . Prices are reasonable, expect to pay more for scallops than lobster per pound 37 vs 31 ) and dorado and sea bass were under $15 per lbs. we were pleased that the fish came out very moist and not overly seasoned . Scallops were moist and juicy although seasoned read more salty that anything spicy or or complex . It was good regardless and we had no problem finishing them. The mezze was affordable(under $10) for eggplant 2 ways. Came with warm pita . The service was spotty at times with staff either eagerly waiting to take a spare plate, to us waiting for ice and new lemon wedges. I initially expected a much larger seafood counter however it had a number of good options although some seafood like giant prawns weren't fully defrosted. The place can get quite noisy with groups, especially families with children so be warned that you have to speak up. read more

After my last review, I finally went back yesterday with my mom. I ordered the fried bronzini with baba ganoush and a salad. Said I wanted it plain. Same for my mom. No seasoning. The ordering process can be a little confusing at first: you start by waiting to hand select your fish and seafood from the fresh display, specifying how you'd like each item prepared. Once you've made your selections, you are then seated. Thankfully, we were seated quickly on a busy Sunday night, and our food arrived at the table all at once and in a surprisingly short amount of time. The seafood was fresh, which made it a great experience. Our Seafood Selections: Scallops 5/5: They were incredibly fresh, cooked to perfection, and super juicy. Calamari 5/5: The squid was very tender and fresh, and the batter was fried just right. Mussels & Clams 4.5/5: Both were delish! The mussels were paired with a delicious sauce, and the clams were big and juicy Jumbo Shrimp 4/5: These were impressive in size, feeling almost like mini lobsters. The sauce and seasoning were great, but they were slightly overcooked. Tiger Shrimp (3/5): A bit of a disappointment. They didn't resemble tiger shrimp, and were overcooked which made it a bit tough. Cuisine: 9 Service: 7 Decor: 7 Value: 8 Overall: 9 If you have never had Egyptian seafood, then you need to get yourself to Astoria. The trinity of these types of restaurants are Sabry's, Abuqir Seafood, and Hamido Seafood. I have experienced all of them many times over the years because they are amazing. Now, after visiting all three again recently, it's time to finally review them all. After Hamido recently move the dining across the street to a two story corner building, I have been there three times. Their old store is now a fish store and takeout only for cooked foods. Thankfully, the quality has not changed, still the freshest seafood, seasoned beautifully, and cooked extremely well every time. One thing that stands out for Hamido is that they have great lunch specials Monday through Friday from 12:00pm till 4:00pm. There are some good seafood options and they all come with two sides for a reasonable $19.99. As for what I like here better than the other two competitors is that Hamido does everything very well to excellent. No real weak point. Their starters and soups are great. Their pitas are fluffy and soft. And of course, their seafood is second to none. My favorites include their grilled and fried scallops, tiger shrimps, and calamari. Though they cut their octopus in an unusual way, it does grill up quite well and creates more of a char with the flatter surface. They also do a pretty good job with the rest of the grilled shellfish like giant prawn and littleneck clams. Let's talk about the fishes. Their sengari striped bass is usually quite moist, full of flavor, and yummy too. Their tajine is not quite as good as Abuqir, but just by a smidge, still very good. However, the blacken (they call it bran grilled) bronzino felt a bit overcooked and dry at times. Lastly, the red mullets were fried well, but they simply lack natural flavor, so that's just a preference thing. Other items that I am a big fan of here include their shrimp moloukhya soup, herring salad, baba ghanoush, garlic eggplant, and homemade mint lemonade juice. Hamido Seafood used to be that place -- no matter how many times you visited, the food was always consistent. The heavy seasoning, the perfect char on the fish, the seasoned olive oil... it never changed. That was what made it special. At the old location, the experience felt like a symphony. You ordered your seafood, watched them prepare each dish with passion, and saw how much care went into making sure everything was executed perfectly. Even the smallest details mattered -- from the way the dishes came out to the unforgettable mint tea, overflowing with fresh mint and lemon blended together. Nothing felt rushed or careless; it was harmony on a plate. With the move to the new location, I was excited. The space itself is beautiful -- two floors, impressive and modern. I thought, "Wow, they've really outdone themselves." But when the food arrived, I was extremely disappointed. The bronzino has always been my go-to, Egyptian style. The char from the grill was my favorite thing about it -- smoky, flavorful, and bold. What I received this time was flat: no char, no real seasoning, just grilled and bland. The fried calamari and shrimp, dishes I've raved about in past reviews for being perfectly seasoned, were the opposite this time. For the first time ever at Hamido, I actually had to add salt to my plate. I even requested lemons to try to liven it up. The grilled octopus, another longtime favorite, was also missing that spark. In the past, the seasoned oil alone was so good I'd dip bread or shrimp into it, and when I ordered it to go, it was usually devoured before I even got home. This time, I ended up taking everything home -- and it just wasn't the same. Even the mint tea was disappointing. The drink I used to love for its balance of lemon and mint arrived stripped down, as if they strained out the very best part. The original location still has its charm: the small, crowded restaurant where you'd wait an hour without complaint because you knew the food would be worth it. The staff treated you like family, offering recommendations on how to prepare your fish, and every dish came out with excellence. This new location, unfortunately, feels like it's missing the very soul of Hamido. The seafood itself is still fresh and beautiful, but the seasoning, the passion, and the attention to detail that made Hamido unforgettable -- the symphony -- just wasn't there. Hamido Seafood is a great no frills Egyptian spot should you be in the mood for super fresh seafood. Hamido is pretty simple. You order at a counter that features fresh seafood. Most orders require you to order in 1/2 lb increments or the whole fish. You can tell them how you'd like it cooked and then restaurant cooks it to order. Afterwards, you get sat down and order any sides you'd like. Overall, I left very impressed. Everything was cooked really well. Hamido makes liberal use of their Egyptian style spice blend which works really well with the seafood. The sides are solid but wouldn't say anything I tried was a can't miss. There's a few of these style pick-and-cook restaurants in Astoria, and I think Hamido should definitely be on your radar if you're itching to try one of them. read more

I love it here. One of the best places to get seafood. The seafood is fresh and full of flavor. My favs are the branzino and the fried calamari. The sides are pretty good too; I love the garlic eggplant. It's a great place for large groups and sharing, eating family style. The service is great and quick. We arrived at the restaurant and the line was super long, but it was absolutely worth the wait. Every dish we ordered was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and so delicious. You can really taste the quality of the seafood in every bite. Highly recommend the grilled shrimp, grilled octopus, calamari, fried snapper, and branzino. It's still a little confusing to me what fishes cook better in which style (i.e., grilled, fried, baked). It would be great if they had a "cheat sheet" that you can refer to. We ordered an assortment of seafood & sides. My main complaint last time was that all the sides came before the seafood, and this time was the same. The only difference is the wait time for the seafood was significantly less! I actually got to enjoy the seafood & sides together which was preferred. I'm not a big fan of any of their sides if I'm being honest. I would just get the Hamido Salad & Seasoned Fries as those two pair well with most fish. All the fish was super fresh & cooked well! My favorites were the Tiger Shrimp and any of the whole fishes especially the Wild Sea Bass & Wild Red Snapper. The Tiger Shrimp was grilled beautifully, were succulent, and had a delicious char flavor. This is a must get! The Wild Sea Bass was delicately fried, melted in my mouth, and super flaky! I could've eaten this whole fish by myself! Another must. The Wild Red Snapper was nicely seasoned, light, and tender. The Salmon was also one of the better ones I've had - rich, buttery, and flaky. The Homemade Mint Lemonade Pitcher was plenty for our party of 9. It was refreshing, not too sweet, with a good amount of mint. It wasn't very cold and definitely needed more ice to enhance the taste. Other than that, this experience was a big improvement to my last one at their smaller location. Finally got to try the famous IBN Hamido Seafood. Came to celebrate my friend's birthday. She insisted that this pace has the best seafood and the best deal for lunch. Totally true! As we walked in the server said we can either order directly off the menu or take our number and go order in the back of the restaurant seafood by the pound. We did both! We walked to the back and ordered a pound of scallops that they grill and cook with butter and garlic. We even learned something new! I told the fish monger that I only wanted the white scallops as I saw some that had an orange hue. He assured me that all the scallops are really fresh and the orange color means the scallop is a female! I loved the lesson in seafood. He threw one orange one into the batch and my friend swears that the female scallop was actually a slightly sweeter than the white ones. This is a must order. So fresh! In addition to the scallops we also each ordered a lunch special. $19.99-includes an entree and two sides. We order the branzini, grilled calamari and shrimp for the entree and beets, fried, tahini and babaganoush for the sides. The branzini was the star of the show. Deliciously grilled and the portion was generous. For the other entree, the shrimps were probably over-grilled which really shrunk the size of the shrimps. All the seafood is very fresh. Loved the decor of the themed interior was an ocean blue color and lots of beach decorations. The tables are covered with hamido themed one time use table coverings. read more
