Our project started weeks before the pandemic in 2019. Dave and his team made the whole remodel experience during this time great. All his trades team were professional, quick, clean and very accommodating. Dave doesn't do the onsite presence and oversight. Please know this before hand. But that's not important because we got to know his team leads very well. They were very responsive and understanding. They relayed all issues with Dave, who is also very responsive to text, emails and calls. Our project was $150k. This is more of a tip than a review. Had worked done in our home about 15 years ago. One of the things they did was remove the bathtub and install a shower with tile and glass blocks. It looked great, although there were a few gaps in the tile grout, BUT the issue I'm having now and what I've been dealing with is mold in the grout of both the tile but especially on the grout for the glass blocks. No doubt the mold is partly due to the grout not being sealed. I'm now having to hire a mold & remediation company to get rid of the mold and seal the grout. So, I strongly suggest that if you get any work done in your bathrooms, make sure you have them seal the grout, be it with this company or ANY company. You'll be happy you did in the long run! read more

This review is long overdue and after reading this you'll understand why. But for those of us who get anxious and can't wait or dislike reading long reviews, I'll spare you. SPOILER ALERT: We split the job up and then COVID-19 happened. In the fall of 2019 we hired Greyhound General Inc and Dave Jovin after receiving multiple bids for our master bedroom bathroom and kitchen remodel. Their bid was reasonable relative to the others and it was the most detailed to include allowances for materials for us to select (i.e. backsplash, countertop...). This was a really nice aspect of the bid and put a more realistic cost of the project into perspective. Dave is licensed, trustworthy, honest, forthright, backed by all the five star ratings on Yelp! and came with a great deal of experience. All of these factors led to our decision to hire Dave's company. We decided to split up the remodel and move forward with the kitchen first. This way we could see how Greyhound General Inc performed and if we were dissatisfied, we could use another contractor for the master bedroom bathroom remodel. The split also afforded us time to save up for the next project. Dave has a great team he's assembled over the years he's been in business building an extensive network of talented craftsman on his crew and a great front office staff to handle billing and communication. There were bumps along the way, as is to be expected in any project, and Dave made every effort to have his crew fix anything we brought to his attention. He is quite busy with multiple projects of various sizes going on simultaneously. This was probably one of the smaller projects at the time and so didn't receive the attention, presence and oversight on the job site from Dave himself that we would have preferred. Please don't misunderstand, he did respond to texts, emails and phone calls and the end product is of high quality and very nice. We were going to remodel the master bedroom bathroom next and then COVID-19 hit and we decided to put everything on hold until things settled out. We just didn't think it would take over a year for things to return to normal and so wanted to post this review before too much more time passed. I needed to repair a leaking roof deck on a duplex I own in Encinitas. The repair was complicated by a dispute with a neighbor over the scope, so it entailed lots of bids, proposals and paperwork before we could begin actual construction. Permiting was not simple. Dave Jovin and Greyhound General exceeded my expectations. He was prompt with paperwork and great at communicating issues in the long run up before we started construction. Once we started it was smooth sailing. Waterproofing was done by Lifedeck, and Dave's foreman coordinated with them without issues. Quality was top-notch, the work was done on time and on budget. Since my last review Dave and his team have built us a mancave from the ground up, leveled our side yard and front yard, installed sod and a fence, and installed outdoor tile. They fixed any problems promptly including an entire do-over on the wood floor of the mancave secondary to unexpected moisture. 2 days ago our AC went out during the hottest time of the year. I called nearly every ac repair on yelp and got nowhere. I contacted Dave yesterday to see if he knew anyone that could help. He sent over his amazing subcontractor Romeo this morning who promptly diagnosed and fixed the problem even though his specialty is not ac repair. I can't say enough about these guys. They are kind, reliable and over the course of a year have become our friends. These guys can do it all. We have referred them time and time again. We recently moved into a town home in Fallbrook as part of the downsizing process. We encountered bathrooms with unusually small showers, particularly the master bath. We had several people come out to give us bids on remodeling our master bathroom. Dave is an extended family member through my niece's husband and had also remodeled my sister's kitchen so we also had him come out. When he did, he seemed to know exactly what I wanted and the end result was such a huge welcoming transformation. Our bathroom looks incredible! We got to pick out all of our materials and created a bathroom that reflected what we wanted and needed. All of the guys (Leo, JC, Carlos, and others) that came to do the various parts of the remodel were all so hardworking, professional, and nice. When we got to completion, I was still bugged by the way the shower door was working. Dave came out to do the final walkthrough and looked at it with me. We realized a couple of things were on backwards and he agreed it wasn't quite right and took care of it. I like the fact that he really wants you to be happy with the job no matter what it takes. Greyhound General is awesome! Four years ago they redid my kitchen, two baths, fence, concrete patio, added a porch and back house. These guys are honest, they will NOT try to upsell you on things, they actually talked me out of a few items to fix on the back house that would have been extra money spent to make the place really nice for something that was just going to be a rental. A couple of weeks ago I found a few issues with the kitchen cabinets. Greyhound just replaced the door with issues and completely replaced a screen door that wasn't working on the back house. That's right folks, that was four years later. These guys have great customer service. You are developing a lifelong relationship with a great contractor if you hire them. If you are looking for a contractor for your project (especially a very custom job) in San Diego, look no further than Greyhound General!! It is difficult to put into words just how satisfied we are with GG, Dave Jovin (owner), and his entire crew of hardworking guys! From start to finish, Dave and his crew were incredibly responsive, patient, and transparent. Let's start with the quote/estimate. After going through a few referrals from friends and family, we were getting very frustrated because it was (1) taking weeks to even get a quote; (2) the quotes were priced very high; and (3) the contractors did not seem to understand (or care) about the subtle details and custom features that were very important to us. We were moving out of our first home, with a 6-week rentback, and closing escrow on the 1960's home in Olde Carlsbad that was in heavy need of updating, so we needed a contractor who was equipped to do a large remodel on a very fixed schedule. Enter Greyhound General and Dave Jovin. Within a day of contacting Dave, we setup a time to meet at the new house to walkthrough the project and our ideas. Dave was on time and prepared to discuss every aspect of the remodel. We bounced ideas off of him, and, unlike some other contractors, he did not try to convince us to go a different direction simply because something was not totally standard. In fact, he expressed enthusiasm for the vision we had, and bounced some ideas off of us that we had not necessarily considered. Within minutes of meeting Dave, I knew we had found the contractor we could trust with creating our dream home. Unlike the other contractors, who took 2-3 weeks to get us a basic quote (which, given our tight schedule, was simply unacceptable and totally out of touch), Dave turned around a comprehensive estimate within a few days, very detailed with costs itemized. Not only was his price incredibly reasonable, it was also very helpful to know the specific areas where we could shift costs for more expensive materials, etc. We immediately agreed to the quote and started the process of sourcing materials, which can be an incredibly time consuming task. I had no idea that I could spend, literally, hours and hours looking for a bathtub, or a kitchen sink, or a faucet, or a countertop. Dave helped us navigate the options, connecting us with his trusted suppliers and vendors, but most importantly, he did not push a single thing on us--unlike other contractors, who will very often tell you "this is the standard, just use it." Our remodel was going to be anything but standard, and Dave understood that, respected it, and helped us along the way. He always took an approach that signaled a willingness to help and make things work, rather than simply pushing us to go the easy direction. We closed escrow late on a Friday, and Dave had a crew of a dozen men doing demolition first thing Monday morning. Our project was off and running! Being the very involved, in the weeds type, I was frequently stopping by the house to check on progress--mostly just out of personal interest as opposed to concern about it not moving along steadily--and EVERY single person that Dave had working on our project was polite, respectful, and incredibly hardworking. Given our tight remodel window, we needed to make the most of every workday, and there was not a moment wasted. They arrived on time every single morning, and worked tirelessly through the end of each day. Not only were the men who worked on the job great people, they were also incredibly skilled. When doing a custom job, you're not just buying plug-n-play materials from Home Depot that pop into place. From the farmhouse sink to the high end appliances, our materials necessitated skilled craftsmen who could ensure that the final product met our expectations. We were simply blown away at the result. As with any project, there are always unforeseen issues that arise--which are almost always caused by the home you are working on or the materials--and GG handled every hiccup in an extremely professional and reassuring manner. For example, our farmhouse sink required that the new cabinets (which were not custom) be custom fitted to create the desired look. It did not quite come out right the first time, or the second time, but GG did not stop until it was correct. They sent their most skilled craftsman to work on this particular aspect of the job, and he probably spent 10 hours over two days measuring, cutting, re cutting, fitting, and fabricating a single piece of wood to custom frame the sink. This was obviously much more labor than anybody anticipated, but it was clear that GG was committed to making sure the project was done correctly, professionally, and, most importantly, lived up to our expectations and vision. We contacted Greyhound for our remodel project because quite a few (at least 5) of our neighbors used the company to add an extra room (our homes all have very high ceilings so there is an opportunity to add an extra room). Those neigbors highly recommended Dave. Our project included knocking out several walls to create a more open floor plan, removing a fireplace to accommodate a new large entertainment center built in, new kitchen cabinets, interior paint throughout the house, and new baseboards. We are so happy with our house now and how everything turned out! There were the usual hiccups that one expects with a project like this, the only significant one being kitchen cabinets coming in with streaks. This is the second, pretty major, job hired Greyhound to do. The 1st was almost 10 years ago, a kitchen/living room remodel with wall removals. Everything turned out beautiful and the experience was 5 stars all the way!! This time, we added on to our master bedroom, tripled the size of our master bath and added a walk-in closet. Dave is such a nice man, responsive and a great sense of humor. All his guys are super friendly and hard-working. The addition looks great and I absolutely love my new bedroom and bathroom!! We purchased a cottage in Oceanside that was built in 1895 which had about 100 years of deferred maintenance. The amount of work needed was overwhelming; roof, plumbing, electrical, foundation work, new bathroom.............and the list goes on. I just completed a kitchen remodel with Greyhound General. My local handyman referred me to Dave Jovin, owner of Greyhound General. As it turns out I was had already seen the quality of work that Dave's crew does through one of my neighbors remodel projects that turned out exceptionally beautiful. Dave met with me to discuss my objectives in remodeling my kitchen. He brought in Berry from Real Deal Cabinets and came up with a design that met my requirements at a price point that was fair and within my project budget. One of my major concerns as I talked to contractors about my remodel was that I had already invested in granite countertops and did not want to go through that expense a second time. I wanted to salvage and reuse the existing granite. While I was at risk that it could break, Dave was pretty confident that he could salvage the countertops and had a specific employee in mind to do it - JC. JC came in and successfully removed the granite and, as it turned out, he supervised the entire project. Blake installed my new cabinets; an absolute expert at what he does. Other crewmembers participated for the various tasks that needed to be done but I call out JC and Blake specifically because of their expertise, precision work and attention to detail. They demonstrate the quality craftsmanship in the people that Greyhound General employs. Plus, it was just an added bonus was that they were a fun group to have around during the project. It took just a week and a half to tear out and complete my new kitchen. My biggest surprise, and a very pleasant one, was when on the last day of construction I was told that a cleaning crew would be coming in to clean the kitchen and areas of my home affected by construction dust. That was an absolute first with any of the remodel projects I have undertaken in my home! My kitchen and house was turned over to me in beautiful shape. Greyhound does excellent work! Dave and his crew are thorough, knowledgeable and reliable. I wanted to replace a large bedroom window with a door that opens on to my front patio. It sounds really minor but in reality there were a lot of details to consider. From the beginning, Dave Jovin impressed me with his experience and attention to detail. I also appreciated the cost conscious suggestions Dave gave me for the project along with the recommendations for types of doors and flooring options to consider. I ended up going with a large, frameless, sliding door system and when the supplier asked me who was going to prepare the space for the door and I told him Greyhound - he told me I had selected a very good contractor who knows their stuff and that he has worked with hundreds of different contractors and not all of them are reliable or as easy to work with. Well, when the window and vast majority of my exterior wall were removed, I realized that I had seriously underestimated how much work was involved and I, too, was relieved to have chosen Greyhound to do the work. They were not only trustworthy and considerate but they took great care to minimize the impact the project would have on the bedroom which was still being used by my son. Dave kept me informed throughout the project and all of the various crew (demo, drywall, painter, electrician) were professional craftsmen. I can recall asking Dave if the project would create much dust and to be honest I really did not believe him when he said "not to worry about it". However, the first thing the crew did was to create a temporary and secure barrier wall (using very thick plastic sheeting) which truly kept the mess and dust from start to finish away from the rest of my house :). After the door was installed, I got this idea to create a small cabana-like area with curtain panels hanging from copper pipes covered with shade cloth. This was not part of the original project and not having done anything like this before I was not fully certain it would work. The details of how and where exactly to hang them were sort of vague but the guys were very patient with me and in the end the entire project turned out very well -- Thanks to Greyhound! read more

Very disappointing experience with Greyhound General. We had Gayle Haug come out to our house to give us a bid on our 1st floor bathroom. One of three we would be renovating over the next year. She was prompt and professional and spent 15 minutes going over our ideas for the bathroom and what we would like. She took measurements and gave us a pamphlet of cabinet designs and colors and told us the reno should be fairly straightforward and won't take too long. That was the last we ever heard form her. She never returned our vmails and never returned our email. We were really disappointed with her lack of communication. Apparently they have enough business. read more

Thank you for a job well done! A friend referred us to Dave Jovin at Greyhound General when we needed to make repairs to a cracking slab inside our home and in our garage. My wife and I also decided to replace the roof, all the windows in the house, install gutters and install a drainage system around the house to protect the foundation. We also replaced electrical wiring and the electrical panel. Once they got started in December, the work proceeded with speed. The roof was completed in 3 days. The concrete work in just about a week. They even managed to keep our hot water going while the garage slab was being removed and re-poured using a resourceful solution to keep the hot water heater in operation throughout the process. All this happened during the holidays and our guests hardly even noticed we were under construction. The entire project came in under budget and with remarkable speed. Greyhound showed remarkable patience while our lender went through a parade of employees and delayed draw payments. There were very few of the glitches that normally accompany a project such as we undertook. Those were handled by Greyhound with no fuss. At the end of every day, Greyhound would clean up the construction mess and would leave the premises tidy and clean. All in all a very satisfying experience. I previously submitted a review for the outstanding whole-house remodel Dave Jovin and his crew from Greyhound General did for us in 2008. This is not an edit for the remodeling job review, rather it is a review for the additional "warranty" work that has been requested and completed, at no charge to us, since the remodel was finished in 2008. The fact is that no matter how good the general contractor and the subcontractors, no new construction or remodeling job is perfect or will last forever. Things come up, like defects in materials that weren't originally evident. Greyhound's company motto is "Customers First, Clients Forever." They have proven true to their motto as the "warranty work" and extra service provided over the last 7 years has been extraordinary. Mr. Jovin is one of the rare contractors who is very serious about standing behind his work. He has the ability to put himself in his customers' shoes, and will "do the right thing", whether it is a few days, or a number of years since the job was completed. Dave has always responded with a positive demeanor, including a healthy sense of humor, and a kind of matter-of-fact "We'll take care of it" attitude. Rather than resisting or making the customer feel like he is asking for too much, or not doing the required homeowner maintenance, he always makes us feel like it was reasonable to request these repairs, and that he is happy to take care of them as a part of his way of doing business. Not your "typical contractor" in this regard. If Yelp did a series of reviews that focused exclusively on the service homeowners have received from their general contractors AFTER their remodeling job is complete, I believe that Dave Jovin and Greyhound General would consistently receive among the best reviews in the business. If you are interviewing contractors about a remodeling job, be sure to ask them about "service after the sale" and know that if you hire Greyhound General, you won't have to worry about that. If you would like to read about some specific repairs, they are listed below. 2009 - Tub Issue A problem with the textured floor on our new composite bathtub; several areas where the texture had raised at least 1/4" above the rest. I contacted Mr. Jovin who quickly responded and came by to inspect the tub. After seeing it, he called to arrange for a tub repair specialist to come by and said that his next stop would be the store where we bought the tile, so he could buy enough extra to have on hand in case they needed to replace the tub at some point. The tub specialist arrived, phoned the manufacturer, and then followed their repair recommendations. 6 years later and no further tub issues, but it's reassuring to know that if a problem arises later, Greyhound has the tile needed to perform a seamless replacement. 2010 - Cabinet hinges The next year many of the self-closing hinges on our new cabinets were no longer closing completely. Dave didn't say "Let me check with my cabinet supplier"; he simply took responsibility for replacing the hinges. In the end, his cabinet supplier provided new hinges because a faulty batch had been used, but he still had to pay his employees to install the new ones. No complaints from him about that; he simply got it done. 2013 - Mirrors and drain pipe Another cabinet issue; "de-silvering" spots on the medicine cabinet mirrors. 5 years down the line and I wondered if I was pushing my luck in contacting Mr. Jovin about these relatively minor issues so long after the job was done. Dave came to our home, took a look, (it looked like it was a flaw in the manufacturing) and simply said "Mirrors aren't that expensive. I'll replace them." I next showed him a leaking drain pipe that I had not been able to fix. He jumped into the role of a "hands-on" owner of a construction company, getting under the sink and removing the trap. After a quick look he said "Here's the problem; it was a factory defect that was just waiting to crack and leak. I'll have my guy bring a new one when he comes to replace the mirrors." By the next week, both tasks were completed. 2015 - Master tub/shower issue Long story short, there was a "mystery leak" at the master tub/shower. I had tried to find the source of it, which had started damaging the drywall and baseboard next to the tub, without success. When I finally decided to take the shower door frame apart I saw some things that pointed to the possibility that it had not been installed correctly. Dave's response; "We'll reinstall the shower door, and take care of the drywall and baseboard damage too." The next week he sent Ricardo and a helper out, patiently listened to what I had seen when I removed the shower door. After putting paper on the bathroom floor and in the hall to keep the floors clean, then they went to work completed all of the repairs in one day, leaving the area spotless. I had them remodel my master bath. I was under a time crunch and they were able to do the job on time and within budget. Dave and Ryan are the best and went out of their way to please me. I couldn't be happier with my new bath and will definitely be using them for any remodel job I have in the future. read more

Greyhound General enclosed my outdoor patio, the new room they created is wonderful, inside and out! When Dave J showed up to give me an eximtate, I had a general concept of what I wanted and didn't want, but Dave came up with the final design while we talked about what needed to be done...he just knew. Greyhound's crew; framers, painters, electrician, mason, etc. are rock solid. The crews were all very nice, they all worked well together, and they kept the work site neat and tidy at the end of each day. We are extremely pleased with the quality of the work, from the framing to the final stone/concrete work. I now have a new space that I love thanks to Greyhound General. I would highly recommend them to anyone who has any kind of remodeling project. read more

My realtor recommended Dave Jovin to me when I needed some repairs done to my home's exterior when putting it on the market In May of 2014. My house was going on the market in a few days and I was in a bind to try to get someone to make repairs quickly. Dave was swamped working on other projects but came by at the end of a long day to take a look at what I needed done. Since all of his construction team was already on projects he made some calls and found someone to help me. I was so relieved. They started the next day. Even though they were not Dave's employees, he inspected their work when they finished. When he and I discovered some flaws in their work, Dave took responsibility and the next morning at 7 a.m. his two best workers came over and finished the job perfectly.
