We meet friends here every Friday night. Great food, especially the green chili. Try one of the smothered burritos. Wonderful staff. It's no wonder they have been in business for over 50 years. Really awful Mexican food. I've lived in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas and haven't had anything this bad. The bowl of chili with beef had no beef in it. It was as though they opened a can of green chili and added water for soup like consistency. The sopapilla was the only good thing we tried. They don't accept cards and didn't let us know until we were ready to pay. There is an ATM in the restaurant with a camera pointing down over it. I don't recommend this restaurant at all. read more

A pretty good meal. In a multiple generational family restaurant. Seem like Griegos has been a fixture in Durango forever. I got a platter with a variety of food on it. The green chilli that my burrito came smothered in was a medium hotness and tasty. The pork red chilli tamale was spicy and very good. If you like hot food the tamales are the best choice. Probably one of the better tamales in Durango. The taco was bland and ordinary. Not spicy at all so if you are afraid of seasoning, or spicy food get the ground beef taco I promise it will be mild enough for anyone. And I have to say they were very wise to put my taco on a side plate so it wouldn't get soggy from my beans or chilli sauce, so smart! They probably have something for everyone even sporting a burger selection for those family members who don't like Mexican food. read more

It is just a little down-home place with no pretensions where many of the old-time locals go. Your idea of 'hot' may be different from mine. I grew up on New Mexican food. This used to be a staple when I went to Durango High School, but now I wouldn't go to Griego's even if someone paid me. The only good things that you can really get here are the bean and cheese burritos, the crispy fries, chips and salsa, and the sopapillas with honey. I wouldn't really recommend getting anything else. It's fast and cheap and pretty much caters to hungry teenagers, so don't come here expecting anything amazing. read more

I'm not gonna lie, I most likely would've never stepped foot in this place if it weren't for the party I was with. My best friend and college roommate is a Durango native and would not stop talking about this place and so one afternoon we sat down here with his two sisters. I don't want to sound unappreciative, but I just couldn't understand what he liked about this place. I mean I know my taste-buds may be completely biased when it comes to Mexican food 'since I grew up in Southern California.... but I just couldn't put two and two together. The group I was with would tell me stories about how they would come here almost daily when they went to the local high school, and I just nodded my head with confusion growing inside my brain. The food isn't necessarily awful, but I feel like it's just frozen microwavable burritos with a green chili sauce on top. The fries were also typical fast-food/freezer section fries, and the sauce was just okay. The only saving grace was their Sopaipilla and looked like the only truly fresh thing on the table. It's a dessert though, so that didn't really help out my hunger. The service was friendly and attentive, but with a dining room with a capacity of about 35, that's not really that difficult. The decor looks like it hadn't been updated 'since 1976, and the general impression of the restaurant left me feeling dirty and generally unimpressed. It's definitely not the worst Mexican restaurant I've been to, but it's got a lot of work to do before I'd recommend this place. read more

Avoid this family run Mexican food joint because there are so many other options. Don't waste your time or money. Horrible, inattentive and depressing service from a family member who can't get fired combined with lousy food made this a bad experience. We should have walked out after sitting down. It's located in an old A & W Rootbeer joint on 26th and Main. Some Grizzly Adams local told us about it and how he craves the food. He may crave it, but I would take anything else even taco bell. Your choices are beans or meat on everything, that's it. No chicken at all unless you want it fried. The tamale was dried out and nasty, taco was super small and standard. The burgers were not good either. The burritos come either covered in green chile sauce or dry and the sauce had ground beef. All locals here seemed to know everyone else. I used to like coming here. Never again. I went in and ordered bean and cheese burritos smothered in green chili. I thought I asked for veggie green chili, but turned out I had not. Instead of doing what any normal place Would have done, and just made me another one. They decided to charge me again. This I've never heard of. An honest mistake, whether made by the customer or restaurant you don't charge again for. Its not like the tortillas, cheese and beans are expensive and they're really loosing money! The lady rudely said, since it was my mistake, they will charge. Not to mention the prices are expensive for what u get. I ended up paying 30 dollars just for 3 burritos!! Most likely the worst Mexican food I've ever had in my life. Nothing special as far as decor, no biggie, however 3.50 for chips and salsa and the salsa was La Victoria and the chips were just hard and cheap. I ordered the enchilada plate thinking this couldn't get messed up, but I was wrong. No meat, it claims ground beef, and a dollar more for extra meat. It was completely cold. The cheese wasnt even melted. No beans, no rice. NOTHING. My husband seemed to like his smothered burrito, but even that looked unappealing. The green Chile was ok, hot but no real flavor. This is probably the worst "Mexican restaurant" in Durango. Your better off going to Taco Bell, and the Taco Bell here sucks as well. My partner and I ate here and absolutely hated it. Their tacos are the size of an original iPod, their staff was awful, and it was 11 dollars per plate for what was essentially cafeteria food.... My partner asked for a water and got a tea from our waitress, I ordered the fajita plate which was basically jerky topped with bell peppers and onions, and the rice was mushy and the beans were probably from a can. They charged for chips and salsa most Mexican food restaurants don't do, but ohhhhh well. I wouldn't eat here ever again even if I was drunk. My parents live in Durango and this is their favorite place for Mexican food as they're from NM. When I visited with my daughter we ate here on our last day and it was super delicious. The chips leave something to be desired which is a bummer as it's the first thing I judge a place on. We ordered bean burritos and my dad had the Indian Fry bread which was super delicious. Man, some of these people have tastebuds that I don't think will ever be pleased. This restaurant is one of the high points in my life in Durango, I live in Az occasionally through the year and the cravings for this place will practically wake me up at night. The half smothered burrito is what I beg my visiting family members to bring home for me when I am in Az, and I plan my trips out of town around when I know Griegos will be open for lunch. I think the decor is part of it's charm. I am a fan of the older styles of things, and not everything has to be the cold, franchised, cookie cutter look of today. It looks like it's out of the 70's? Located on north Main Avenue across from the Durango Community Recreation Center, this is a small locally owned traditional Mexican Cuisine restaurant. Parking is under an awning structure like an old time coke and burger shop. The dining is inside. Meals are typical burrito, enchilada and verde selections. Absolutely the worst food let alone "Mexican" food I've had. Ordered the chicken fajita plate and beef fajita plate. The chicken was dry and tasted like it had been boiled or reheated. The beef was very tough with no flavor and very small portion of beef compared to veggies. The rice was the worst rice I have ever had. Very mushy and no flavor. The manager came over and very defensive of the food. She took no accountability for our complaints but argued with my husband and I. Claiming they have been there for 43 years and "everyone has their own opinion and no one has ever had any complaints " basically made us feel like we were the problem and there was nothing wrong with their food. Well, I'm here to tell you that there is a problem with their food and management if they can't take feedback from their customers. My suggestion, don't eat there in spite of how crowded they look.
