    Birria tacos

I hate to inform you that if you're reading this, the Switchback has closed to be rebranded to a different restaurant. However, we had gone on its closing day and had some great tacos, salad, and ramen. Their birria is rich and meaty with a touch of cinnamon and was awesome as a ramen and taco. Service was efficient and drinks were cold. Guess I'm just writing this to keep my Yelp numbers up...

Considering all of the places I've tried while visiting Durango, Switchback's in definitely in the top. The food is reasonably priced, smaller portions, but really had amazing flavor. Service was good, we all had water so no real refills, but our waitress checked on us a few times. I had the 3 for $12 tacos. They were a little small but packed with flavor. I had the steak and the shrimp and both were good with the steak a little better. Also had the elote and was not disappointed. It was really good also.

Having lived in Arizona and eaten a fair amount of birria, I was a bit skeptical, but the birria was so delicious! I had the birria taco plate which comes with 3 tacos, chips, consommé, and pickled veggies. The meat was tender and flavorful. My husband had the carne asada platter which is a fun twist on steak frites. The carne asada was charred the right amount and came with a tasty chimichurri, and the fries were garlicky. It also came with elote, tortillas, and pickled veggies. Big portions for both meals so we had leftovers to enjoy. Recommend stopping by Switchback if you're craving Mexican-inspired food in Durango!

Ok we already reviewed this place but I gotta give an added shout out to the unbelievable quesabirria. I mean... holy cow. It's unreal. The taco plate is next level phenomenal. You must try it!!!!

The street tacos were great. Add a bowl of chips with three different dips and you are in nirvana. Switchback has an upscale vibe and is very reasonable. The birria tacos with dipping sauce were a great option. Service was quick and friendly. This is an excellent option and does not feel touristy.

The food!!! When I saw the pics posted from recent Yelp reviews so I had to try their Birria Tacos. Wow. So much flavor. The consome was so tasty. Mexican Coke!! Great service at the bar. Timing was impeccable

I had a great lunch on a beautiful day... on the patio. Service was terrific and the food yummy! I will go back when I am in Durango.

Price increases have affected many businesses and this is no exception IMO. Food is still good, but portions are smaller and service isn't quite what it used to be. Still a trendy place on main, with many happy at the bar. My girl enjoyed the ramen, steak and rice bowl was good. Hubs said tacos weren't as good as last year. $104 for a beer, a lemonade, elote appetizer, Trio appetizer, taco trio, rice bowl w/steak and ramen.

I scarfed down the shrimp taco, so the pic is of carnitas and the brisket. OMG. So good.

So many places to eat in Durango that I turned to my trusty Yelper friends. Everything you read is true. So delicious and tasty, and as good or better than Los Angeles street tacos.

Honestly everything I want from American tacos. Corn tortillas. Good selection of different meats, and importantly for me, good vegetarian choices. They also happened to be vegan. Since I am technically pescatarian I tried the shrimp taco as well, and it was one of the best shrimp tacos I have had in a long time. The marinade was delicious. The Anasazi bean dip was outstanding, and conveniently vegan so could be enjoyed by a diverse party. Queso was excellent also. Great bargain on drafts for happy hour. I am pretty sure this is what I will be craving the next time I come to Durango.

Quality food. Nice atmosphere…read more Horrible service. Having frequented this place many times, I'm always amazed at the painstaking lengths that the owner went to provide a pleasant dining experience, good food, high quality ingredients, and a pretty excellent value relationship-- Only to hire incompetent servers. Tonight I was placed alone next to a window, with the server barely spending more than 10 seconds waiting on me--in 50 minutes. Instead, he doted over all of the large groups in my vicinity, promised me a refill on the iced tea, watched me sit there waiting for 30 minutes for a refill, and never provided such. You got it. When I was handed the electronic payment machine...Yupp... he literally stares me down like a back alley shakedown artist. In addition to wearing a scuzzy unkept beard, not advisable for food servers, right?, he actually seems visibly upset when I gave him 16% tip, even asking me "was something wrong?" I know that we are in a small town, and Durango is feeling its growing pains, transitioning from a mountain/railroad rural tourist haven to a high profile mountain resort. But this was so obvious, that it ruined the experience. The burger was well executed and had a nice patina, offering a rewarding crunchy patty exterior. The marinade the patty was placed in was great as well. The bun was high quality and so too was the blue cheese and fried onion strings.
