We were *so* looking forward to Switchback, after reading just a few Yelpers share their thoughts about this place! Brought the parents and man, Switchback did not disappoint. If you are a lover of well done birria, this is your place. Craving authentic Mexican food? Yep, this is your place. We started with their chips and salsa. I think you can tell a lot by the salsa at a place. Lemme just say, I was so very happy! Their salsa wasn't too chunky, not too thin and they are not afraid to season and add some heat - but hey, don't worry it wasn't too hot if you've got a dad like mine who isn't a fan of "too much spice." Such a good omen. I couldn't decide which marg to try so ordered a flight. Best decision ever. Even as I write this, I'm still hard pressed to choose a favorite. They were all so good. Add street tacos, quesadillas for my mom, elote cob, and switch fries for my dad and we were all happy campers. The flavors were obscenely good. Staff were amazing and stopped by to make sure we were always taken care of: fast and friendly. Best combo ever. The place is also super cute! Loved the bar and simplicity of the concept. Considering all of the places I've tried while visiting Durango, Switchback's in definitely in the top. The food is reasonably priced, smaller portions, but really had amazing flavor. Service was good, we all had water so no real refills, but our waitress checked on us a few times. I had the 3 for $12 tacos. They were a little small but packed with flavor. Great place to eat in Durango, had the elote in a cup... small serving for the price, had the birria tacos... don't order if you've had real birria not quite close to the real thing, my wife had the rice bowl with steak and that was delicious. I'd give the place a 7/10. Being from Texas just was sorta disappointed with the execution of Mexican food and serving sizes for the premium you pay for these dishes. Having lived in Arizona and eaten a fair amount of birria, I was a bit skeptical, but the birria was so delicious! I had the birria taco plate which comes with 3 tacos, chips, consommé, and pickled veggies. The meat was tender and flavorful. My husband had the carne asada platter which is a fun twist on steak frites. The carne asada was charred the right amount and came with a tasty chimichurri, and the fries were garlicky. It also came with elote, tortillas, and pickled veggies. Big portions for both meals so we had leftovers to enjoy. The atmosphere was rough from the beginning. The heat was on blast but the front door was open and it was 45 out. We were seated in a corner by the door and went from hot to cold throughout our meal. It also took 15 minutes with no waiter before we had to go ask the host who we order from. The food was marginal at best, especially considering the price and size of the plate. Price increases have affected many businesses and this is no exception IMO. Food is still good, but portions are smaller and service isn't quite what it used to be. Still a trendy place on main, with many happy at the bar. My girl enjoyed the ramen, steak and rice bowl was good. Honestly everything I want from American tacos. Corn tortillas. Good selection of different meats, and importantly for me, good vegetarian choices. They also happened to be vegan. Since I am technically pescatarian I tried the shrimp taco as well, and it was one of the best shrimp tacos I have had in a long time. The marinade was delicious. The Anasazi bean dip was outstanding, and conveniently vegan so could be enjoyed by a diverse party. Queso was excellent also. Great bargain on drafts for happy hour. Upon first glance Switchback looks like a typical modern Mexican restaurant that specializes in margaritas and "vibes" rather than food, but the quality of the food has SOME really impressive items. The best items we got were from the happy hour menu. The chicken tinga flauta was superb, nice fry and tender chicken but the best part was so much cheese on there. The shrimp skewers had some great seasoning on there. The nachos were a little bit of a disappointment with the queso being bland and the carnitas having a ton of fat in there, but the chips were very good. For the entrees the highlight was the red pork pozole, not too spicy but still has good flavor, and adding lime makes it hit even harder. The tacos were also good with the mushroom taco being a surprising stand out. The biggest disappointment was the birria quesatacos. The tacos weren't super flavorful and didn't have barely any cheese. The birria broth to dip the tacos in was mostly just onions and cilantro without any flavor, it was absolutely missing salt at the minimum. Luckily it came with some other sauce to use as well as the hot sauces available were great. The homemade carrot habanero wasn't too spicy but was a little thick it was hard to get out of the bottle. Overall I'd recommend it here, I'd just avoid a couple of items, especially the birria quesatacos. read more

Tacos! Tacos! Tacos!! This is a cute place that serves delicious food. We had to wait for about 20 minutes to get in, but they put us on a texting waitlist so we were able to shop while we waited. The time went by lickity split! We started with some chips and queso which were delicious. The queso was white, creamy, with a little spice to it. I would prefer a little more kick but my kiddo was happy it wasn't too spicy for him to share with me. My kiddo ordered two street kid tacos. He got one with carnitas and one with chicken. He thought the carnitas was a little spicier than the chicken. The chicken tasted moist and the cheese on top was really good. I ordered an elote cup of corn. I couldn't decide if I wanted the OG cup or the Hot Cheeto cup so my server suggested I do half and half. I tried both sides and did prefer the OG side. However, both were fabulous. I'm not from the area but I was visiting a friend and couldn't pass up happy hour here! The happy hour menu was pretty expansive and there was plenty to choose from. Nice place, clean lively atmosphere. Didn't order drinks but enjoyed their Mexican Cobb salad with chicken. Fresh veggies, generous portions, and flavorful dressing. Also tried the shroom fries - a unique and hearty version that I appreciate as I'm always looking for ways to eat more mushrooms. The only issue is the heat/spice factor was way too overpowering on both dishes and made it hard to fully appreciate the entire meal. Owners would do well to rethink their assumptions on 5-alarm spice levels so all could enjoy their fine creations - not just those with Teflon tongues. read more

Stopped here on a recent work trip! I usually visit Durango once every few months and had this place on my list! I had high hopes for Switchback and thought it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't amazing. I got the Mexi-Cobb salad with spicy tinga chicken, a birra taco and some OG elote. I added pickled red onion and avocado to my salad and though it was tasty overalls but it wasn't note worthy. The elote had some nice flavor, but was little to heavy on the chipotle mayo for my preference. It was a lot by itself, tasty with chips or on a taco. The birra taco was the most disappointing. They don't come with consome for a single, which is a bummer and they aren't nearly as juicy or cheesy as a typical birra. Slightly different flavor profile with some undertone of cinnamon or some type of spice. Overall, it was tasty, staff was friendly and food was quick, but I won't feel inclined to come back with all the other options in Durango. read more
