Finally tried out this Boston steakhouse staple. Steak and service were very good. The 100 day dry aged prime ribeye had great flavor and the dry aged prime new york had a nice texture. Both were served with a bit of greens and french onions to balance the rich beef. The foie gras was a good starter, kind of like a French onion soup with seared foie on top. They definitely seem to apply their French onion flavors in a couple places. Sides left a bit to be desired, the peas and mushrooms were a miss (overcooked) and while the sweet potato looked impressive the pork belly was dry. Cocktails were on the sweeter side, so wine is probably the better play. Ambiance is traditional Boston vibes and quite lively given the Back Bay location. Overall, solid steak and service, but I'm not sure I understand the hype for the price. read more

If you're looking for a traditional steakhouse with premium cuts and good service you can't go wrong with this spot. We started off with the French onion soup which was flavorful and pipping hot (much appreciated). The table bread came cold and stiff so not much to enjoy. Calamari was fresh but they overloaded with veggies! We played it safe and got the fillet mignon which was cooked to perfection but the side of mashed potatoes we could've dealt without (unless you're a fan of non-creamy and break apart) mash). Ambience is very nice, but expected to be very loud inside due to the multi floor levels. I've eaten at several great places for a steak in Boston, and this is my favorite so far. Classic steakhouse, vibe, and ambience. We were seated upstairs, made a reservation ahead of time which you absolutely should do because this place is busy no matter what the night is! My wife and I recently tried grill 23 and we keep coming back. I already knew it was a very popular steak house and it does not disappoint. We were very impressed with the wait staff as they were frequently around and very attentive to every table. The food itself is incredible. Every dish has unique flare and is very tasty. I especially enjoyed the lobster bisque and the onion soup. The steaks are very good quality and truly worth what you pay. They are simply seasoned but cooked to perfection with good flavor. We continuously get the dry aged sirloin. Drinks are good and sides/ starting bread only add to the greatness of the meal. My third Dine Out Boston 2026 Winter visit: Grill 23 & Bar, named "Best Steakhouse" in Best of Boston 2025. This should be a very prestigious award, but considering the quality and price, it was a bit disappointing. Table Bread: Absolutely delicious, even after microwaving. The multigrain bread had a natural sweetness from the starch, along with the fruity sweetness of the raisins; the brioche was soft and delicate; but my favorite was the country bread (unfortunately, it seems to be obscured in the picture!), the spiciness of roasted black pepper infused into the bread, a perfect match with the butter, one bite felt invigorating. Wagyu Beef Carpaccio: A stunning start, though also the only highlight . The beef was incredibly tender, delicate, juicy, and chewy, already very flavorful; olive oil and balsamic vinegar were a classic combination, creating a rich and tangy fragrance; the biggest surprise was the mild, expansive earthy aroma of the truffle aioli, and the different crunches of the crispy shallots and arugula added layers of flavor. The foie gras snow was barely noticeable, just a garnish. Steak Frites: I ordered medium. The beef was incredibly juicy, juice even oozed out with each cut, indicating good quality. However, the cross-section revealed coarse fibers, shrunken into thin strands, and mostly grayish, clearly closer to medium-well. It was also rather coarse and tough, feeling mushy. The broiler seemed to have been too hot, resulting in uneven doneness. Worse still, the seasoning was extremely salty, requiring ice water to refresh. The fries and onions were plentiful, definitely filling, but the flavor was rather ordinary. Butterscotch Bundt Cake: The pound cake crust was more on the dry and hard side, than slightly crisp, the interior dense but coarse, completely lacking the expected softness and moisture. The passion fruit caramel was overwhelmingly sweet, with almost no caramel flavor, only a sharp, direct passion fruit sweetness (like a full-sweet passion fruit juice or tea), devoid of any complexity or aftertaste. It's worth mentioning that the restaurant seemed to pay little attention to the pace of service. After ordering, I started taking photos of the table bread, but only two minutes passed, I only managed to take two photos and hadn't even had a bite of the bread when the Carpaccio arrived. Since this dish is very sensitive to temperature and texture, I had to skip the bread and pack it up to take home later. This disrupted the natural, relaxed pace of the meal; everything felt rushed and mechanical, and the dining experience wasn't truly respected. In my opinion, for a restaurant of this caliber, waiters should have the ability and awareness to observe the table dynamics and control the pace of service. read more

I've had better at my local dive bar. The mashed potatoes were dry and flavorless, the tots had some weird burnt flavor I couldn't put my finger on, the creamed spinach was so bland and watery, the tuna tartare was...fine, the chocolate cake was inedible it was so dense and dry and flavorless. Also, the selection of sides was disappointing. One vegetable and it was creamed. I would have killed for some steamed or grilled broccoli or summer squash. We stopped at Grill 23 after a day of shopping and for their crispy extra chilled martinis. While the restaurant is a white linen establishment we weren't made to feel weird wearing jeans. In addition to a round of cocktails we taught our server about "Girl Dinner" - Caesar Salad, Parmesan Fries, and Oxtail Bolognese. All 10/10 and would order again. I came here upon recommendation from a colleague who used to live in Boston. Making a reservation online was easy and smooth. It's definitely a classy spot, white tablecloths, nice ambiance, so dress up a bit! They start you off with complimentary bread, which was delicious. The cornbread especially was a favorite, so much so that we asked if we could have a bit more of just the cornbread, and they happily brought some out. Loved that! DRINKS: -Mojito: good but could've been a bit sweet -Taittinger: my mom enjoyed her champagne -Daou Cab: my sis enjoyed it and had 2 glasses FOOD: Ribeye: So good and was cooked a medium rare, as requested! My sister and I shared it, and they were kind enough to split it for us. Honestly, it looked like two full ribeyes when it came out. It was seasoned well. Salmon: My mom loved hers, it's usually her go-to dish, and she said this one was excellent. Lobster Bisque: They split this for us too, and again, it looked like we each had our own serving. Creamy and flavorful. I would get it again. Carrots: These were adorable -- little stubby glazed carrots (I'm sure they have a proper name), but they were delicious! Our ribeyes came with a side salad, which we didn't realize when ordering, so we probably didn't need the carrots -- but they were still worth it. The crème brûlée was good too, pretty standard but tasty. The only downsides: 1. My sister ordered a second glass of red wine before the ribeye arrived, and it took forever to come out, she wanted to enjoy it with her ribeye, but it arrived much later. 2. And we were seated near the restrooms, which wasn't ideal. Not right next to them, but close enough that people walked by often. If I'd known, I would've requested a different spot when booking. 3. And here's the crazy part, when we got the bill, they applied a separate 30% tax for liquor on my mojito. Not on the champagne or wine. I've never seen that before! I know drinks get taxed like everything else, but it was literally listed as a separate "liquor tax," 30% apart from the food tax. When I asked our server, he kind of joked as if I was clueless on taxes and said, "There's tax on everything,".which wasn't exactly helpful. I asked if it was a Massachusetts thing but he just laughed it off. Maybe it's a Massachusetts thing... Still, it was odd and definitely caught me off guard because everywhere else I've gone, it's just one tax calculation on the total bill. My husband took me here for my birthday to celebrate. This was not our first time here and felt like it was time to review. The food was exceptional. Every item we ordered was cooked to the perfect temperature and seasoned well. Not too salty or lacking. We started with the waygu carpaccio. It was tender, flavorful and in my opinion you received a lot of meat for the price. I ordered the wedge salad and could not have been happier. The blue cheese was creamy and tart but not overbearing. My husband ordered the Caesar and I wasn't quite as impressed with that. The anchovy flavor was entirely too strong. It is all I could taste but my husband enjoyed it. He ordered the 100 day aged prime rib and said it was the best prime rib he'd had ever eaten. I traded him a bite of filet for a bite of his and it was an exceptionally juicy and flavorful cut of meat. I ordered the filet with truffle butter. I was a tender piece of meat and cooked perfectly. The Mac and cheese was probably the best Mac and cheese I've ever eaten at a restaurant. The cheese was thick and creamy and again seasoned well. I find most restaurants have runny watery cheese but not the case here. The cream corn was amazing and will definitely be getting both of these items again. The fries were good too just not anything I have had comparable at other steak restaurants. By the time we got to dessert we were stuffed but they were both very good and we would get them again. Our server's name was Joel and his support person was Chris. They both took great care of us and made sure my birthday night was a wonderful experience. Alexander, Ariel, and Leymar served our table so beautifully. The food was unbelievable - beef carpaccio, Caesar salad, salmon croquettes, baked chicken, steak frites, and dessert with no notes. I used to preach to my customer-facing teams that you don't fully learn about the true caliber of organizations and people when everything is going smoothly. No, you only gain a clear picture of what a culture is all about when things go sideways, so you can see how everyone comes together to turn things around...or not. Several months ago, I had a less-than satisfactory evening at Grill 23 that was significantly disappointing, both for myself and for several associates who I had invited to celebrate a win. There's no need to dwell on the details, as the goal here is to look through the big piece of glass (the windshield) rather than through the small one (the rearview mirror). Suffice to say that I had no intention of returning and made that clear in written communication. What happened next belongs in a Harvard Business School case study titled "Turning it Around with Excellence." Within relatively short order, I was contacted by Johan Mola, Grill 23's Assistant General Manager. What an impressive young man, one who has clearly benefited from a top-notch upbringing, high-quality professional development and wisdom that he has accumulated through his own intelligence. Johan's communication exuded sincerity and empathy. He was a great listener who never once cut me off. He singlehandedly transformed my frame of mind from one that was slammed shut, to one that was open to giving Grill 23 another chance. It happened that when he reached out, I was in Asia for a month. Over that month, Johan periodically checked in via WhatsApp, just to reassure me that he had no intention of letting the matter go. He was masterful, but it was his authenticity above all that made him so. Fast forward to last night, when I returned to Grill 23 with my wife, hopeful but still apprehensive; I needn't have been. Johan greeted us at the door, effortlessly made us feel at ease, and escorted us to our table. During the meal, he checked in several times, always in an easy, unobtrusive way that just said "I'm here for you guys, whatever it is that you may need." The waiter assigned to us (Garrett) was fantastic, we couldn't have asked for a better person to take care of us. His service was seamless without ever feeling excessive, more like a hospitable friend serving us an incredible dinner at his home. We were also visited by the Director of Operations, Gary Tummings. He made us feel valued and special, it was appreciated. All in all, this was one of the more enjoyable restaurant experiences we've ever had. Of course, the food must be mentioned, because it was flawless! We started with a dozen Cape Cod oysters, the Foie Gras and the Beet Salad, all impeccably presented and delicious. We then welcomed the restaurants two signature steaks, the Porterhouse and the Tomahawk. Both were cooked to perfection (medium rare) and the flavor of each cut was nothing short of world class. The sides (carrots, asparagus and French fries) were all excellent as well, both in preparation and presentation. For dessert we had the coconut cake, which was mouthwatering, and a portion so generous that we had enough for seconds the next day. In short, the fare that we experienced last night was on another level...we absolutely will be back soon. I want to once again thank Assistant General Manager Johan Mola for everything he did to "right the ship" and to provide us with a truly memorable evening. All's well that ends well. Finally, I want to give a shoutout to Philip, the parking valet for the restaurant. We had talked prior and following the first experience and he immediately recognized me over two months later. What sets him apart is that he obviously cares deeply about the restaurant that he works for and the patrons who dine there. A birthday meal at Grill 23 & Bar was the kind you don't forget. It was layered with richness, history, and absolute attention to detail. The evening began with a classic Negroni cocktail and the Wagyu Beef Carpacccio: impossibly tender slices of beef, barely kissed by truffle aioli, topped with crispy shallots, arugula, and foie gras. It was delicate and opulent all at once...like silk on the palate. Then came the crab cakes: golden and crispy on the outside, but packed with sweet lump crab inside and zero filler. We were promptly greeted upon walking in and taken to our table. The holiday decor was just lovely! They even have a gingerbread display curated by their pastry chef! Our server, Hector, was an absolute gem. He was prompt, sweet, and professional. He knew when to give us space and could definitely read the table, which is a skill I appreciate! We started off with some drinks and moved right into dinner (plus they brought some fresh bread). I had the steak frites and my husband had the prime meatloaf. Both were outstanding! I ordered the taleggio creamed spinach which was also phenomenal. For dessert we had the G23 vanilla milk and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and all I have to say is DO IT. We had a phenomenal experience at Grill 23! My friends and I came here for drinks, apps, and dessert, and were blown away. I can confidently say everything was 10/10. From the service to the food, it was perfection and worth every penny. We got cocktails, oysters, the coconut cake, and the cookies + milk (plus our server treated us to some vanilla ice cream!!!) Starters: Wagyu Beef Carpaccio - Refreshing, delicate, and a unique twist compared to other versions I've had. If you're into raw meats, this one's worth trying. Calamari - Crispy, just the right amount of batter, and paired with a lovely marinara. The only downside? The plate had more jalapeños and onions than actual calamari, so the portion felt smaller than it looked. Mains: I went with the Ribeye Oscar Style, and wow, it was one of the best Oscar Style toppings I've ever had. Huge, juicy lumps of crab, rich creamy sauce, and perfectly cooked steak. My husband also chose the ribeye, adding a lobster tail. The steak was solid, but the lobster tail was a miss, it tasted like it had been sitting a bit too long, served cold instead of hot alongside with the hot the steak. The word is out and they are almost always very busy I went here again on Friday night to take out some friends from Ireland. As usual they did not disappoint. Loved the old school elegant ambiance here and the staff were wonderful but the food was very underwhelming and i left wondering if management may be cutting corners. Few Items Ordered: 100 day dry aged ribeye ($90) - the steak was surprisingly much chewier than expected. never would've known that it had been dry aged for 100 days given the flavor intensity and tenderness. this was odd. Japanese A5 Striploin Wagyu ($170) - this also felt off. the steak was not as beefy and tender as expected and made me wonder if we got jipped and got served American Wagyu instead lol "Famous" Coconut Cake ($17) - not sure why this is famous. cake was on the dry side which was a bummer, but i did enjoy the different coconut elements (mainly the coconut custard cream, coconut caramel, and the toasted coconut bits) I am very tempted to make a trip to Outback Steakhouse so that i can compare a rib-eye at Outback to Grill 23. Went here with my girlfriend on Saturday for the dirty martini and it did not disappoint! Service here was probably the best we had all weekend. We sat at the upstairs bar which seemed to be a little less crowded. Could not recommend this place enough! read more

We are generally very easy to please and rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at Grill 23 was deeply disappointing. We booked a 9:00 PM reservation through the Chase Sapphire Reserve dining program, which promises access to a curated selection of exclusive tables at select top restaurants, a prime-time reservation, and a $150 credit. Expensive dinners out are very rare for us--we both work in schools (as a teacher and a school counselor) and are currently putting two children through college--so this felt like a special opportunity we were genuinely excited about. After a short wait, we were seated upstairs in what was clearly a banquet or overflow room with no ambiance and none of the charm the main dining room is known for. When we asked about alternative seating, the response from staff was dismissive, and we were told our only other option was dining at the bar. At the bar, we ordered a bottle of wine we had selected in advance, only to be told it was unavailable and replaced with a suggestion that cost $20 more. When we declined, the interaction felt abrupt and unprofessional. No effort was made to accommodate us. Ultimately, we chose to leave. There was no apology or attempt to recover the experience, and we were initially charged over $300 for food we did not intend to take. It took further insistence to have this reversed. For a restaurant of this reputation--and one partnered with a premium program like Chase Sapphire Reserve--the service, hospitality, and overall experience fell far short. Definitely overrated in my opinion. It was extremely packed, and the ambiance is nice and open, but ultimately the food was pretty disappointing. Our dishes were very salty while also being bland, though the potato caviar appetizer was good. The coconut cake was cloyingly sweet in my opinion, and we took home leftovers but couldn't come around to eating it again. read more
