Grill Stop has a weird vestibule that's so small that you can hardly open both doors at the same time. I wonder why that is. Did there used to be a pay phone in there, back during the dark ages? I went in this place roughly a million times when it was a knockoff Dunkin Donuts, back during the crack era, but I must not have needed to use the phone. Anyway, I was glad to see that there was something, anything, in this building, and I may have been swayed, on a subconscious level, by the fact that its logo seems to have been cribbed from Wing Stop--one of the best restaurants of all time, of ALL TIME. When I stepped in the door, the guy working the counter seemed kinda nervous, like I'd walked in on something, but it turns out it was just that he'd turned off the menu. The menu in this place is three HDTVs that are mounted above the counter. When they're turned on, they just show a static image of a fast food menu. How decadent, given the nature of this establishment. I guess they figure anyone who would break in would have to break through both doors, and by then I'm sure 5-0 would have intervened. UCPD are vigilant to a fault. It occurred to me to stop there in the first place because I was in the mood for something deep fried (it was that time of the afternoon), but then I figured I might try the Philly cheese steak, both out of curiosity and for the sake of citizen food journalism. It's the very first thing on the menu, which led me to believe that it's either especially good or especially profitable. I knew it could only be but so good, at that price (less than $8, with fries and a soda), but I was curious to see what exactly it was. You can never tell what something looks like from these bullshit menus. Come to find out, this thing is just a Steak-Umm--the frozen, chunked and formed meat tablets they carry in your grocer's freezer aisle. As much of a savage as I am, I haven't had a Steak-Umm in at least 20 years, which ought to tell you something. Not that it's such a bad sandwich. It's oddly delicious in the way that that square pizza that comes with school lunches is way better than it has any right to be. And this version of it is done up with, among other things, grilled onions and melted American cheese. It tastes more like a cheeseburger from White Castle than anything that's not a cheeseburger from White Castle (and I of course mean that as a compliment.) But would I ever knowingly order a Steak-Umm from a restaurant? Of course not! My parents would be so disappointed. As good as this thing was, I don't know that I can give a restaurant that sells such a thing more than three stars. Having said that, I probably will be back. I might try the chicken wings, even though there's at least 40 places that sell chicken wings in a 10-mile radius. If their chicken game is half as good as what they've done to a Steak-Umm, they could be dangerous. read more

If I could give this place a negative 1 I would. Think twice about eating the food here. We ordered the T-bone steaks which comes with a salad and bake potato. I have no idea what the steak was but it wasn't meat. The longer you chewed it the bigger it got in your mouth. It tasted like ground up cardboard. The baked potato was nasty as well. It was like they re-heated it in the microwave after setting for a long time. Ordered the cheesecake and it was nasty. Save your money and don't do it! This is a good little stop in University City. Very unique restaurant with some good options. I loved their teriyaki sandwich, so I am sad they removed it from the menu. Their service is usually extremely long, so I recommend calling in to order food. They're a newer business and always adding new and upgraded services to their experience, son it gets better each time. It's convenient if you're in the area. read more

If you're looking for a tasty, hot sandwich for cheap, Grill Stop is the place to go. I ordered the pepper cheesesteak combo, 6 classic wings (buffalo and sweet chili, came with fries) and chicken Philly. They all tasted great, and the wings had a little something special about them... vinegar? That was probably enough food for three hungry people, and it was around $25 after tax and (optional) tip. This is a small, nondescript place to get delicious fresh-to-order gyros, chicken fingers, sandwiches, and other better-than-most carnival-type food. Fries and crispy, prices are very fair, and portions are big. Soda is sold by the can and water only comes in a bottle, but a gyro combo is $7.28 and a ribeye steak with Greek salad and baked potato is $9.99. Don't let the offering of ribeyes, t-bones, or other flame-grilled items fool you--this place is in no way considered fancy. But the food is fresh, tasty, and very good. Food is served in to-go containers even if you are dining in at one of their five tables. Not fancy but a great place to have weekend lunch with my kids without the distraction of lots of people and loud music found at so many family restaurants. read more

My stars are for the customer service. I was not satisfied with part of my of my meal and called Grill Stop to let them know and to ask what can be done for me on a different day. The response to me was that's not going to happen. If I don't come back the same day I cannot get a different meal or refund. It didn't matter how far the customer had to drive to get to them the answer was NO! I gave 3 vs 1 because I could have ordered something that wasn't their best item. I ordered wings and strips. They forgot my honey mustard which I reminded them to put in the bag. The food was fresh and hot but taste like old grease to me. They barely understood/spoke English. When trying to explain what you want they had a difficult time understanding. I'm very good with accents so I understood them fine they just didn't know what I was saying lol I've been looking for tenders since moving to STL and still haven't found good ones. So this is an inexpensive little restaurant on Olive Street. It has a large menu of various items including burgers, steaks, and chicken wings. This isn't high end dining but tasty American food. I preserved the spicy chicken sandwich and it was great. Breaded chicken that actually had a kick to it. The Fries were fine but generic although they had some seasoning which was nice. I went there tonight I ordered 4 meals and one of them had hair inside. I called and they said that they would replace the nachos but when I got up there two of the men working up there began to yell that it wasn't there hair and they didn't want to replace the meal. Now let me say that the two people cooking didn't have on hair nets and had short hair like the ones in side the food. They explained that there hair was straight and that it couldn't be there hair. So rude and stupid. I will never eat there again because this is just another example of why these kind of establishment should not be in our neighborhoods if you don't like black people don't open in our neighborhoods. read more

Grill Stop is a very fine place to get good food at a more than reasonable price. While I was out of the country my wife lived on their gyro's salads. I have enjoyed their chicken wings, which can be made in the segmented style or in the full wing format. I had their steak and shrimp combo, the steak wasn't great quality but was good, but the shrimp was fried and excellent and the dish came with a mountain of well cooked fries for about 15 dollars. We brought friends who also enjoyed the place. The decor isn't much but the place is clean and the people are very friendly. Bring a jacket if it's really cold out, because there's a lot of glass on the place making it somewhat difficult to keep quite as warm as one might like. I'd say carry out is the main attraction here. For tons of great food at a really good price, I'd say this is a really good value, and you can get a wide variety of choices from sinfully fried, to salad healthy. read more
