Restaurant Review: A Second Chance Squandered at Grill 22, Guin, Alabama Each year, my family and I make the journey from Florida to visit relatives in the quiet town of Guin, Alabama. With that tradition comes a recurring hope: to enjoy a satisfying meal rooted in Southern hospitality. Unfortunately, our recent visit to Grill 22 proved once again that not all second chances are worth taking. After a deeply disappointing experience in the past, the restaurant's management had extended an invitation for us to return and give them an opportunity to make things right. Regrettably, that gesture of goodwill was not matched by the quality of the food. If anything, this visit confirmed that Grill 22 remains one of the most underwhelming dining experiences I've had in recent memory. Let's start with the nachos -- or more accurately, a scattered pile of Doritos topped with lukewarm processed cheese, a smattering of black beans, and aggressively salty pickled onions. Calling it an appetizer would be generous; calling it edible would be dishonest. The chicken wings, which could more aptly be described as emaciated pigeons and arrived dry and sinewy -- hardly the juicy, flavorful bar staple one might expect. My wife's choice, the so-called "margarita flatbread," was equally baffling. It bore little resemblance to the classic Margherita flavors. Instead, we were served a sweetened tomato-and-cheese concoction on dough that tasted more like a school cafeteria experiment gone wrong. But perhaps the most egregious offense was the ridiculous pricing. Grill 22 demands a premium price point for what can only be described as gas station-grade food. The ingredients, preparation, and execution fall so far below acceptable standards that it feels insulting to be charged full-service restaurant rates. To be clear, this isn't a case of a kitchen having an off night. This is a systemic failure in culinary judgment and quality control. It's deeply frustrating -- not only because of the wasted time and money, but because no guest, local or visiting, deserves to be served food of this caliber. In a region known for warmth and hearty, soulful meals, Grill 22 is a stark outlier. If you're passing through Guin and find yourself hungry, I'd strongly suggest you take a detour -- even a fast food drive-thru would deliver a better, and more honest, experience. read more

I ordered a fried fish fillet platter and it was good but it doesn't come with an onion to eat with it. The slaw wasn't good at all. It tasted as if it was old or been in the fridge too long. For the price I feel like one should get two fillets instead of one. Way too pricey for the small portions one receives. If you want you moneys worth on a fish platter, go to guys place in Fulton Mississippi instead. Because of their prices, I'll not be attending there again. ‍ read more

Given that this place is located in the middle of nowhere with few to no other restaurants or options nearby, I probably can't complain. Keeping that in mind, this was great to have; judging without that in mind, it was just average. I had the breakfast buffet with my room, and it was fine, though mostly flavorless to be honest. The only item I really could taste flavor in were the breakfast potatoes. Others have mentioned the bacon, but I don't eat so perhaps it was good as well. I also had dinner here during one of my nights staying at the Holiday Inn this restaurant is a part of. It had some more flavor but still was pretty average. I had their ribeye special, and it was pretty chewy, again with not much flavor. The rice pilaf had no flavor, and their fries were fine. If there were other options in the area, I probably would only go with the breakfast that came with my room, but I suppose it's fine given there isn't really anything else to choose from. read more

Great food and great service. Quiet and peaceful...only one television on and volume was only load enough for those sitting at the bar. All of the food had excellent flavor. Everything was cooked perfectly. For this to be a restaurant within a hotel, they are doing a phenomenal job! Would definitely visit again even if I wasn't staying in the hotel when traveling through this area. read more

Better than most Holiday Inns. This restaurant is in the Guin Holiday Inn. We were in Wayfield to get our RV worked on and spent two days here. The breakfasts were excellent. No complaints about the food. The staff honestly made me feel like I was special. They were very attentive and checked on me often. If you are here, the place is worth trying. read more

When on the road, It's nice to unwind and have a good meal after a long day and then head up to your room. Grill 22 has Thursday Wings night: $.50 cents boneless or $.75 cents bone in. I tried 4 but got a few extra due to size. The Ceasar Salad with Shrimp was good.. the shrimp was cooked perfectly and was complimented by the Blue Moon on draft, garnished with orange. The slice of Cheesecake for the room later with coffee was delicious! #dietwhatdiet It's my second time staying at the Holiday Inn in Guin and eating at the Grill 22. Restaurant inside the Holiday Inn Guin. Service is good and they were very nice. We ate here for dinner and breakfast. Food comes out rather slow- especially for breakfast. It was a pretty large group and we got our food orders one by one. It took forever. They probably need to up their chef count on staff. Dinner: The Honey Sriracha Wings were so good! They come with thing sliced potato chips that were very delicious and celery/carrots. I had the Hunter Chicken with Mash & Green Beans. The chicken was small and a bit dry. Food needed seasoning or salt. Breakfast: I had a egg scramble with potatoes, cheese, and added turkey sausage. Very good! read more

This was a breath of fresh air! Even though it's located in the middle of nowhere, I think this was a genius idea! The restaurant is located within the hotel. The hotel lobby is a bit on the lavish side while the restaurant was even nicer. There's an inside bar with tvs and an outside patio with seating around a pit and stringed lights overhead. It was like being in a vineyard. The staff was very nice and cordial. I ordered a 2 for $32 special which included a steak, 2 sides and shrimp scampi (a bit skimped, only a few) with lemonade which were all delicious. The next day I enjoyed a breakfast buffet (menu is available also) which was ample with a nice variety. If you're ever out this way and need a stay and meal, try this place! read more

I'm really sad to give this place such a terrible review but I have to. I've stayed here quite a few times over the past few years and I must say, the restaurant has terrible waiting times and the food is overpriced while being of mediocre quality at best. Update... hotel manager called and offered to "send something up to my room". I politely refused. I think that "something" may have had a little extra spit in it read more

I sat down at a table for awhile, there was 4 people working here, they all saw me but none bother to come ask what I want to order, but there were two girls came after me and they came out to ask what she wants IMMEDIATELY! WTF? And I'm a guest at this hotel. I'll make sure IHG knows about this. I ended up going outside for food. Will never stay here again. A Hampton Inn nearby I should have stayed there. read more

So this place was odd. Not sure how it got 3.5 stars on Yelp. Zero atmosphere since there was just the tables for free breakfast and a few booths. The room is open to the lobby, high ceilings and bright lights. My wife's pasta dish only had half the listed ingredients and my grilled chicken had very little taste. We were drawn by the Yelp star rating but disappointed. My advice is stay away unless you have no other choice. read more

We were traveling home from Orlando after ice and snow fell throughout the area. Everywhere was closed and this was a last resort. It was great. The waitress (whose name escapes me) was super friendly and attentive. The food was very good. One of the best cheesesteaks I've ever had. Definitely recommend. read more
