The thin crust still had a good chew to it and the variety of toppings to choose from allows one to customize your pizza or you can pick from a number of their signature pizzas. We opted to make our own unique combination of extra sauce, meatball, sausage, ham, and fresh garlic. It's a very open area and we watched the pizza dough flying high and spinning as we waited for our own to be brought out. Really good pizza experience that includes an indoor and outdoor option in The District. I love both, but outside on a nice night is quite good. This place takes reservations and I would encourage making them on a weekend night. I am a big fan of their Brooklyn Bridge pizza, and their Garden Salad is a good one. Males for excellent warmup options the next day! Ali and Britta have been our servers, and both were terrific, fun, and knowledgeable. Coal-fired brick oven pizza. Ankeny district has been keeping up with the changes. Grimaldi's hasn't been at this location very long. We had just had pizza the other night from another chain, but were out for a special night on with beautiful weather for an IA summer. Parking in the District can be a pain on the main road so know ahead of time where your back up parking is if you cant get in on the main strip. We lucked out and found a decent spot on an early Thursday evening. We know the District gets a hopping in the evenings. We were greeted with young fresh faces. Host smiled and sat us right away inside. There is seating outside and there is bar with seating. There is also big garage like doors that open up and give the place a chance to breathe on this perfect evening. We got seated at a boot right where the servers hang out. I could have asked for something else, but I could see down the food line so I was entertained with the dough prep. Decorated from floor to ceiling with photographs. Some prints from early mobster days in NY to current shots of a Brooklyn Grimaldis. The waiter came by quickly as the restaurant wasn't busy yet. He was happy to get our drinks and take our order. The floor was full of young staff. They would be chatting or putting boxes together for orders to go. The pizza - so you know, we've been to NY once in the last couple years and got to try coal fired pizza. Just once. This pizza reminded me of it. It was probably the thin crust with the slightly charred bottom and crisp top bubbles. Im not trying to start a fight with NY pizza lovers, just saying it reminded me of it. We enjoyed the Brooklyn Bridge pizza. I think there are a couple others on the menu I would like to try in the future. It came out right out of the oven and we got it cut up and put onto our plates. We didn't get any other appetizers or salads just due to prices but the pizza was enough for 2 of us. Now price: We were just at another chain the week prior. It was a specialty pizza and one drink. It was the same price! So the 1 large pizza for the 2 of us and 1 drink it was not overpriced, but the coal fire really had a better taste overall than the lack luster of the other location. I don't need to share the other location, but its a common chain in IA and NOT the gas station. Overall relaxing location with nice music and quick service on a week day evening. read more

Grimaldi's is a great addition to the Ankeny pizza scene. I've been to the original location in Brooklyn and I actually like the setup and feel of this location better. The decor is fantastic and the music is Rat Pack-esque, which I love. It's decorated modestly with scenes from New York, which I think is fantastic as they look like real photos and not generics. The service was good - not as crazy as the original location and I didn't wait in line for well over an hour to eat here. Our server was the bartender. I did a 12 inch pepperoni and hot honey and my husband ordered the 16 inch Brooklen, which was red peppers, sausage and maybe something else. It was perfectly crispy where it should be and chewy as coal fired pizza generally is. I really enjoyed our dining experience as we went when it wasn't busy. People will complain about prices here, but I think the high quality food and dining experience make it worth while. My only disappointment was there were No Real Housewives of wherever dining while we were there as there was when we were in Brooklyn. read more

YESSSS!!! Grimaldi's!!!!! In Ankeny, Iowa of all places!!!! We were in town visiting friends who live in Johnston and could not contain our enthusiasm after finding out that there was a Grimaldi's in nearby Ankeny. We have been HUGE fans of Grimaldi's for almost a decade. We first learned of/experienced the deliciousness that is Grimaldi's at their location in El Segundo, CA. We would frequent that location often, but sadly none of the ones in Colorado have survived the test of time. We now live further away from El Segundo and don't make it back to that location as often as we would like. All that being (boringly) said lol...this location in Ankeny is just as good as any other location we have been to and remember so fondly. The staff was very friendly, the ambiance amazing as always (thanks Frank S.), and the food delicious!! We had the bruschetta trio and two large pizzas - one pepperoni and one 1/2 pepp 1/2 margarita, with sides of jalapeños and hot honey. The bruschetta was good, but not omg good. Quick tip - if you sign up for their rewards program before you go you score a free appetizer! The pizza however, was once again the star of the show! Incredibly good! Just the right amount of toppings, everything was so fresh. Just the way we remember it being! Without a doubt we will be back every chance we get when visiting our friends. We've had Grimaldi's before in Phoenix when we lived there, so we were so excited one of our faves was opening up in The District at Prairie Trail. We went on a busy Friday evening and there was a large party in the back dining room- their back up with the party made everything we ordered not come out in a timely manner (as we were told by our server) so the timing of our appetizers came at the same time as our pizza did. The food was just as great as we'd remembered it being! A lovely atmosphere, although it is a bit pricier than most pizza places in the metro which is going to be a shock for most. They have some pre made specialty pizzas where the toppings are already pre determined. Otherwise you build your own and toppings are around $4/each. We enjoyed our time and the food was excellent here!! Definitely recommend! read more

Pizza style is NY style with hand tossed thin/medium crust cooked via coal brick oven. Sizes vary from 12-18 inches. There are preset toppings on their most popular pizzas. I came here on a Friday night and it was pretty busy but they have plenty of tables inside and out. Inside, you can see them make and bake the pizzas which is cool. We tried "the don" and the pepperoni with hot honey (my usual pizza order anywhere). All their pizzas are New York style- big slices with thin crust. We enjoyed both. New and clean. Appreciate that they are open late, one of the reasons I tried this place. Seated right away, service was good no issues there. Cool that you can watch the cooks toss the pizza dough from where you're sitting. My low rating is due to the quality of the food. The pizza was unevenly cooked, half the pizza had a burnt crust while the other half was just right. The toppings are what I disliked the most. We got an all meat pizza and the toppings were low quality and didn't taste great. Pizza sauce was lacking in flavor too. The slightly burnt piece of paper they call pizza was overpriced in my opinion. I guess you're mainly just paying for the labor of the hand tossed dough though. Maybe the other pizzas are better and it was just this one but I don't plan on coming back to see since this was the first time in a while pizza left me feeling sad. Then again theres not many places that offer NY style pizza so I guess if you are desperately wanting this style this is the place to go around here. read more

If this was a straight crust competition this would be 5 stars. You need to like that slightly charred bottom crust and crisp edges. Stay away those of you that like pillowy pan pizza. The only reason this pizza drops one star is because the toppings just weren't that great. We ordered the don pizza and the 4 cheese pizza. The don pizza had an amazing crust but the meatballs were store bought warmed up frozen meatballs. They had that slight tinny aftertaste that frozen meats have. Crust was amazing, sauce was good just brought down from perfection by the subpar meatballs. The four cheese pizza was good but it was our mistake as we thought it would have tomato sauce but clearly states in the recipe it comes with white sauce. On its own it's too rich, suggest ordering some marinara to dip to cut through the richness. Very good pizza, order the cheese, margherita or build your own, but their meat pizzas have less than fresh ingredients. read more

Really amazing service. We came on a Saturday night and hour and a half before they closed and they really amazed us. Our waitress was really nice and very friendly. She was also attentive. The place is beautiful. It was very relaxing as the music and atmosphere felt like old New York. This restaurant just takes you to a different level. The pizza was crispy and definitely taste that brick oven crust. The cesar salad was probably the best one I ever had. They give you so much of it. I'll own that I was enticed by the lemon and arugula salad. I made a mistake. The dressing is terrible and my salad was drowning in the dressing. The antipasto, while to go, was not attractive looking and to be honest I was not very good. Also at $12, I've gotten airport food that I felt was a better value. The pizza also felt over priced at $28. Just can't see going back since there are several other options in town. read more

I went here for a team dinner and boy was I not expecting this. I sat down was given a drink and here came the pizza. First we got the hot honey pepperoni pizza. I have never tried this type before but after one bite it was probably the best pizza I have ever had. It was sweet and spicy with great crunch and little flop on the pizza. Everything you could want from a pizza Place. You could tell the pizza was fresh and cooked with love. The inside of this place is very pleasing with a very antique looks and fun style.
