My family and I ate at your restaurant Fri Feb 6. The service was excellent as was everyone's meal but mine. I had the peach/strawberry salad with chicken. The salad alone was $10.00. There may have been 4/5 very thin small slices of peaches and the same for strawberries. If there was 1/2 oz of feta cheese I'd be surprised. It was totally not worth the money. We visited on New Year's Eve. The homemade biscuits with lavender butter were out of this world-extremely soft and fluffy. I had the campfire mule and the eggnog espresso martini and both were tasty with cute flair. The steak for my steak frites was as big as my head and extremely juicy. By the time the banana pudding cheesecake came, my husband accurately described me as being in "hog heaven". Our server was awesome. I really enjoyed our first meal here. read more

Upon entering this ford avenue establishment one is greeted by the hostess accompanied by the rustic charm of a cozy country home adorning the walls. In addition, to the classy presentation in the front entry way there are two to three dinning areas in the restaurant. One is the bar to the far right. Another is the slim corridor in the middle of the space which employs a smart looking wood finished floor. The third is a square room with a fireplace under a taxidermy elk. I thought the decor was classy, rustic, and thoughtful. Albeit a little dark and they did not do enough not to remind guests that they are dinning at the old Beijing house. I could still see touches of the old Beijing house which made me sad about its closing. Service: I thought the service was a little lacking especially on the front end of my experience. It took the server a while to greet me and even longer to bring out my drink. I wanted to order the soup of the day and a fried green tomato appetizer. But I was interrupted in between ordering the two dishes to be told they ran out of the French onion soup. The server also did not pre-bus well and left my empty glass on the table when she brought me a new sweet tea. The service improved toward the end of the meal when my server became more accommodating and offered things like a to go box and dessert. She even offered me a Togo drink which I found more than hospital. Food: The food was pretty good and I have to say executed well. The Fried Green tomatoes were good but a little pricey for the portion size. The Redfish and grits were cooked excellently. Definitely homemade grits and the fish was definitely seasoned Cajun style. Personally I found my particular filet a little fishy earnest the bloodline. The food was good but nothing to write home about. Overall: This is a nice classy restaurant and I like that they are open during lunch hours. If you like the classic feel of an old southern homestead you'll like this place. The TL;DR version of this is very simple - Just go and try it for yourself, you will NOT be disappointed... The restaurant-front is very unassuming, almost something you could overlook, if it were not for the ample seating outside that obviously points to a restaurant being right there. When you walk in you enter into a beautifully decorated, rustic themed restaurant. Ample seating both via high-tops and your normally heighted tables. The place has a decent sized bar hidden towards the back of the location - nicely furnished as well. The menu is short, sweet, and simple - but don't let the lack of choices throw you off. This place is more about quality than quantity, when it comes to choices. But when the food comes out, there is plenty of it, it is southern cooking and hospitality after all. I had their fried schnitzel, a southern twist to a German favorite - I loved the collard greens with it. My cohort enjoyed the slow braised short ribs - absolutely delicious. The cohort also enjoyed a couple of their mixed drinks made quickly and boozy, the way she likes it. For dessert we had the chocolate Godiva cake - big, rich, moist, and about as perfect as you can get. Service was super friendly, chatty (like I like 'em), and made sure to keep an eye on our drinks and any requests we might have had. The bread bowl was so good, I understand and am also sadden by the fact that it's not complementary. The food I was expecting more because of how good the bread was but my pork chop was over cooked to the point it was hard to cut and chew. The young lady that worked the night of 1/17 with curly hair, acting as the manager was VERY DISRESPECTFUL! This was my second visit and decided to bring my two sisters with me this time. When one of them did not eat the chicken pot pie because it was not pleasant to her, the lady came out with the most disrespectful demeanor. First, she did not introduce herself when approaching the table. She immediately started talking with her hands and her neck, with her lips twisted. We were sat at the table, asked for drinks in a reasonable amount of time, however the wait for the drinks was way too long. After we received the drinks, no follow up. And when there was, she didn't ask if we wanted another drink. Ambiance was decent, they turned the music on an hour before they closed. I enjoy trying new restaurants so when my friend suggested we dine here, I was super excited. Simply put, food, service, and ambiance... Yes, yes, and yes!! We started dinner with the bread basket and shades of green appetizers. The bread basket was not traditional bread but cornbread muffins. Often restaurant cornbread is hit or miss but these had the right amount of butter and sugar. This was my first time eating fried green tomatoes and that appetizer was delicious too!! Every dish was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I had the fresh market fish (snapper) and my friend had the slow braised short ribs. Again, both were a hit. For dessert, we tried the carrot cake (not on the menu but available in the mini-bakery located near the front of the restaurant). I am not a big dessert eater and thought the cake was too rich and sweet by my friend thoroughly enjoyed it. Went for dinner the other night. Five adults-two meatloaf, two burgers, one steak. Steak was ordered medium rare, received well done. Dry, chewy, no seasoning. Burgers, okay but no seasoning on the meat and again overcooked making them super dry. Meatloaf wasn't meatloaf. It was a burger patty seared on the outside. Hard, crunchy and super dry. Came with mashed potatoes that had to have been flakes out of a box and again, no seasoning. Green beans were mush. Couldn't even poke them with a fork. Good thing, the sauce on the "meatloaf" was excellent. Unfortunately, the burger was so dry it soaked up the sauce quickly. Service was good though. Boring atmosphere. We were put in a small room with nothing to look at. Only one wall full of cast iron pans was the only decor. Every meal was over $20 so I expected much better. 2nd time eating here. food was on point small menu that packs delight. bread basket nice and hot tomato stack great 1st time I had the pork chop. thick juicy and very good. this time i had the pasta. big serving and great taste. service was friendly and prompt. I don't care for the table up by the bar. felt like. was sitting at the kids dinner table on hard chairs. so we moved to the cushioned chairs at the bar. Firstly, Grit & Grain is a terrific restaurant. Entrees take a few minutes to deliver because they are made to order and the two that we tried, the Southern Fried Schnitzel and the heritage pork chop, were each absolutely delicious. Secondly, this is also a bakery, as such, order the bread basket while waiting for your entree ... scrumptious. Thirdly, this is a bar, and the bartender is an artist; I had a rye-based Manhattan that was unequalled anywhere that I have sampled on the east coast. Finally, our waitress was an absolute delight and made the entire evening pleasurable, which fit the overall ambience. I am recommending this restaurant to everyone. read more

We went with another couple to Grit and Grain for dinner. My shrimp and grits were very good. My husband and the wife of the other couple ordered short ribs. They brought both orders of short ribs to the table and started to hand one to my husband but seemed to rethink it and gave it to our friend instead then they gave my husband the other short rib. Our friends short ribs had lots of meat and was amazing looking. My husbands was all fat and not even 1/4 of it was meat. We got the waiter who took it back and then brought it back out and said it could not be exchanged for a different one and that they would give us $2.00 off, not enough for virtually a meatless meal with a huge serving of fat. At the end of the meal we were still charged full price and had to go another round with the waitress to get it straightened out this time they gave him 1/2 off due to all the fat on the plateI doubt I'll get my husband to go back but we love the Local and the Italian restaurant that are owned by the same people so I'm thinking it was just an off night so I'll give it three stars just due to how good those restaurants are but the ambiance doesn't warrant the prices For pretty much the same price you can go to Bella's or the Local and have a much better experience read more

We are new to the area and decided to try Grit + Grain tonight after hearing an ad on the radio. We were not disappointed! The food was all 10/10. Our table ordered steak frites, country fried chicken, kid's chicken tenders, a peach margarita, and a fields of berries cocktail. Oh, and how could I forget the bread basket with the honey lavender butter? Delicious! However, the highlight of our experience was Karen. I had read a review praising her before we went, so I was pleased when she appeared at our table and introduced herself. She was an outstanding server to us. Knowledgeable, attentive, but her kindness stood out the most. Once we got there our son began to say he wasn't feeling well and she offered several things that might help. In addition to wishing him well at the end of the meal. We will definitely be back! My only suggestions & comments are that a few more options on the kids menu would be nice and the restaurant was a bit chilly inside. read more
