With high food prices since the pandemic and higher price increases this past year, Grocery Outlet's groceries are a bargain. The store is a gem for inexpensive wines, priced like Trader Joe's wines. Though many of the store's items are close to their "Best By" dates or are overstocks, their prices are significantly below Safeway's (increasing) prices and Safeway's highly priced "sale" items in its weekly ad. Grocery Outlet carries some items that are not available at other supermarkets. Large bags of salami ends (eaten in moderation) come to mind. Yes, as some Yelpers have posted, the cashiers are not friendly or sometimes rude. But mostly, the cashiers simply do their job, and the customers are on their way. A lower expectation may help. The store could use some of those large platform carts for larger items or multiple cases, like at Costco or Smart & Final. read more

This is a great resource to find good quality food on a budget. Obviously they don't have the widest variety or selection but I can always count on finding great products in my price range. Also, the checkout clerk John (tall gentleman with a beanie cap) is usually there when I shop and he's always very polite, efficient and patient with customers. Grocery Outlet has been around for decades. it's business model has evolved from selling slightly dented cans to selling products near it's sell by date, overstocked products from other sources, products that aren't selling.... stores are owned individually by a pairing of partners. no person owns more than 1 G.O. not all G.O's sell the same item. pricing may vary between different stores. I stopped shopping at G.O. for awhile. started again after I developed a plan: don't expect to find anything I want. just buying a few items cheaply to see how they taste. (beats paying regular price for something that's so so) seldom buy vegetables, meats, liquors cuz I seldom cook. I only boil, steam, microwave, and baked in convection ovens. each store caters to a certain demographic. stores near high income area will have high end products. etc. most G.O.'s cater to middle income earners. nonetheless, expect most products to have high amounts of fats, sugars, salt, additives. some will carry vegan food. was asked politely if I wanted to donate $5. which I could get deducted from my next shopping tab. OMG!! I never even heard of this store and now I will look for it everywhere I go. I made a stir fry a few night's ago and wanted to make it again. I saw this store while making a different stop. I was very impressed with the prices. For organics too. I think I paid $15 less for the same items I got at a Safeway. This is including some organics. The young lady at the register was pleasant and professional. I was on a time restraint but I will return just to wander the aisles and see all that they have. read more

I enjoy checking out different Grocery Outlets as each store is a franchise and though they have common products, there are items that are unique to each store. Since we were in the area, we stopped by this store since we were in the area. Located in the Marin Square shopping center, parking was plentiful. This store is modern and was spacious with wider aisles compared to typical stores. The meat, deli and produce section are in the back right and frozen sections are in the middle of the store. The store was well stocked and they do a good job doing it as there were pallets of inventory ready for stocking. The store carries a lot of inventory in each category, so you get a lot of option here. We got some Oakland Coffee by rock band, Green Day here. This is one of the better stores that I've shopped. A good store choice for you Grocery Outlet shoppers. read more

There is poor customer service from the employees. The cashier named Rosie dropped one of my purchases on the ground, so I asked her to have someone to get another one. She told me to get it. It was all the way in the back of the store. Once again I told her to have someone get another one and she repeated herself and told me to get it. Finally I told her to delete the item from my receipt. This Rosie cashier looked about eight years old which is way to young to be working. I then talked to Gustavo the manager and there was no apology from him and he almost defended the horrible Rosie cashier. And he too provided bad customer service. They do have some nice items at discount prices. Not all their prices are better than other stores. I was there about two years ago and there was an $8 error on my receipt. The store is not very crowded even on a weekend because it is not that popular. read more

BE AWARE customers!! Always pay attention when the cashier rings you up. They either would entered the wrong price or scan the items twice especially if you're not paying attention or buying more than 20 items. Today, I bought some items that were 75 percent off. The lady manager was informing me that the garden stuff were all on sale and trying to make me buy it so she can stock the shelves with Halloween and Christmas items. I found some lawn chairs that were 14.99. While waiting in line, she came over and took one of it stating that she wanted to check the price on it. I said okay. The manager told the cashier, Alejandra in Spanish to ring those up for 5.75, not knowing that I understood them, so I decided to pay close attention to her scanning. She rushed me to pay but I didn't budged. I corrected her and said those are 3.75. I know my math, but had to use my calculator to confirmed. 75 percent of 14.99 is 3.75. Alejandra quickly yelled back to the lady manager in English this time and told her that I was saying it's 3.75. Manager quickly recant her price and Alejandra voided the price using her supervisor card. Now I'm thinking she's a manager too. After the correction, she stormed off rudely and didn't even apologized. Her coworker stepped in to finished my transaction and asked me if I wanted my receipt. I said of course I did. CUSTOMERS always ask for your receipt. Some of the post here mentioned the employees integrity and during this encounter they both conspired to scam me. Besides that, I would say, I enjoy the large selection. It's a hit and miss on finding the deals. The prices are reasonable because either the products are expiring soon or it's overstocked of goods. read more

I am a BIG fan of the grocery outlet stores. I have been shopping at all the bay area stores for some time, the prices are unbeatable. I'm a single income parent, therefore...these prices are undeniably great!! I have shopped in many several occasions to this location, and all, but one of my visits was great. I was here on 12/31/23 and I encountered a cashier who made a mistake on the receipt. I came back to the register to indicate there was a mistake and she quickly acknowledged the error. She handed me the amount back but shorted me my change and only gave me the dollar bills. I realized she had shorted me so, I had to notify her before walking out and ended up waiting because she had assisted someone else in line. I did not gripe about having to wait, it was the fact she felt shorting me of my change was okay. She did not apologize for the error or inconvenience. Customer service comes a looooong way. Plus, I wasn't being rude or demanding, I just simply wanted my money back for being overcharged for an item I did not purchase. I left the store, and quicky realized I had to come back inside before leaving the parking lot. When I returned I made a quick dash to the produce section which was very neat and the product looked very good and fresh. It was nicely arranged and everything about it looked appetizing. I grabbed the produce I needed and returned back to the line. I didn't have the same clerk as the first checkout when I was there minutes earlier. I had a younger girl who was EXTREMELY RUDE!!! She was a younger Hispanic girl named, Debahni and her attitude was trash! She was annoyed that the receipt was not printing and began cursing at their receipt dispenser. She never apologized or indicated a single remark for some common courtesy regarding the inconvenience. She actually indicated it was not her fault the machine was not printing and that the receipt printer was jammed. She spoke both languages to me, but she continued to curse at the machine and tap it while saying "bi***". I heard her do this action twice and call the machine "bi***" twice in my presence. I was shocked at her behavior, but more shocked at the lack of common courtesy and the disregard for any type of attentiveness or friendliness that one expects from store clerks. She asked if I needed my receipt and I told her that I did, especially after the initial time when I was overcharged. I was legitimately entitled to my receipt. I'm an individual that saves my receipts and scans them on a system I have at home for my records. She seemed very annoyed with my request, and I told her that customer service comes a long way and that her poor negative attitude was not necessary. It was NYE, but not only that I as a customer deserved better treatment. I was not being demanding or rude, I simply wanted my receipt. Very small task, but she was extremely disturbed. This young girl needs to be taught a BIG lesson in respect and manners, but especially customer service. She will never get far in life with that poor attitude in the work force. She needs a switch in jobs, especially if her attitude is going to remain like this. Marin County will not tolerate this type of hostility from any employee, especially a young girl... people will begin to flood yelp or call the manager regarding her very poor attitude. It left me speechless, and I was disappointed my kids had to witness her disrespect. Another lady approached the register, since Debahni indicated to her I wanted my receipt, this woman too did not apologize, and I expressed to her that the last girl was being extremely rude and had an attitude. I also told her that she had been expressing herself with curse words. I don't expect top notch customer service, but I didn't even get minimal average customer service. I also got the same feeling, the Debahni girl was hostile and the other girl who took over after her could not even offer an apology for the inconvenience or the wait time for having to re-boot the computer a few times for my receipt. They were all speaking Spanish at the register, I can understand, but for others it can be perceived as rude. Because of this negative encounter and experience, I will refrain from this store until they can hire friendly clerks who have empathy and can at least be slightly kind on a customer service level. read more

I love Grocery Outlet especially these days where the prices for groceries have skyrocketed. Going to Grocery Outlet is like going on an adventure. You never know what cool products you are going to find when you are there. The problem is that sometimes I find a great product that I absolutely love but then they stop stocking it. Oh well, that just means I need to find a different product to get addicted to. So many great organic and vegan options. I love that I can get everything I need for so much less than other grocery stores. Honestly, since I've started shopping at Grocery Outlet, I've cut my monthly grocery bill in half. The staff don't seem to love their job, not sure what that is about. Minus the unhappy staff, I love this store and visiting the GO is part of my weekly grocery shopping routine. read more

I have shopped at various Grocery Outlet locations for decades- but this San Rafael location has turned out to be my least favorite of any Grocery Outlet. My experience with GO goes back to the Berkeley location more than 25 years ago, and more recently I have shopped the Santa Rosa, Petaluma, and Novato locations whenever I'm looking for a deal or interesting items. My biggest issue at this location is the prices- on my last visit, which will probably be that 'my last visit'- there were many items that were priced somewhat higher than Safeway. I'm not referring to Safeway's loss leader sale prices, but everyday shelf prices. It's like they're ripping off the poor people who might not know better or don't have access to other grocery stores. Beyond my issue with the exceptionally high prices on some items, the selection of items is kind of subpar compared to other area locations. I notice that different stores have items that are more available in their area- for instance, Santa Rosa has always had more good wine. Petaluma often has more cheese selections. This location seems to just try to be a regular grocery. Also a problem, there are many unpriced items on the shelves, and I have had price discrepancies that come up at the register on items that were marked on the shelves. I never really noticed this at other locations. I was kind of excited to see the San Rafael location opened and initially thought they were just having trouble getting things going but I think I'm pretty much done with this location and wouldn't recommend it. read more

Rudest Grocery Outlet that I have ever set foot into. 4 encounters with nasty female employees at checkout: will NEVER shop here again. Not a great selection here anyway. Last visit: the employee at checkout kept letting the customer swipe cards that were all declined. They started a LONG conversation in Spanish. Customer went to car to get yet ANOTHER card to swipe. Employee put up closed sign & told customers waiting in line to go somewhere else, she was CLOSED!! WTF. Rude POS employee. I set my items on the display & walked out. The prices have been a bit unreasonable lately and things are often not marked properly. I got a carton of eggs with a price of ~$2.87 below it and when rung up the cost was ~$3.85. I brought this to the cashiers attention and all he said was "so you don't want it?" My guess is they did not switch out the price tags with new inventory. Pans mushroom jerky was stocked in multiple locations all across the store without a price in every single instance. When I was rung up, the cost was $6.99 per bag. That's about how much it costs at Whole Foods. A frozen bag of broccoli for $3.48. Same brand they've been selling for years (I think some brands may source directly to Grocery Outlet as I've been seeing this brand since at least 2014 at their stores. It is practically never out of stock). This bag used to be twice the size that it is now for the same price. Times are a' changing, I guess. read more

First time trying this store and I was charged $50 for chapstick and paid a total bill of $179 for what should have been a $130 total bill. The chapstick at checkout had an extra $50 "glazed pottery" tag (a high-priced pot for plants!)on the back instead of the $0.99 correct price tag. The clerk and manager refunded me when I came back four hours later and caught the mistake. This makes me question the integrity of the staff and I won't likely be going back. There was excitement in the air for the grand opening of the new Grocery Outlet in San Rafael. It's located on Bellam in the same newly renovated shopping Plaza where Ross is located. There were giant balloons out front and excited shoppers exploring the new store. The Grocery Outlet is a chain of grocery stores designed to provide reasonable prices to families. Every store is owned by a family and differs a bit in what products they carry. This store had wonderful deals on cheese and wine, beers, sundries, and had an incredibly beautiful produce section. They do not offer an chain brand and you don't have to buy in bulk to get a good deal. Many items I saw were at least a dollar or two cheaper than competitors prices. You can save enough money shopping here to afford a yearly vacation. I recommend the Grocery outlet as a wonderful place to shop for your family or business. So grateful to have this new store in the neighborhood. read more

Very nice new addition to my town. Store was clean, well stocked and very neat. My one complaint, and this has happened both time I have been in: you need MORE CHECKERS or at least instruct the ONE checker to call for help wen there are 3 or more people in line! The line both times was probably 10-15 people deep and you had one slow checker ad no calls for more help. Seriously, this needs to change. I was on my lunch break and could not wait so I had to leave a full cart in the isle and get back to work. I hope this changes SOON. Thanks. read more

I've been a Gross Out shopper for decades. I've been to more stores across more states than most GO franchisees and district managers. Great to visit a new store. I've been in 4 times, and decided to write a review. I get the feeling that the store is short at least 3 managers and a food buyer. I don't enjoy the smell of citrus mold as soon as I walk in the door. It is very distinct and unmistakable. Move the ice cream towards the checkout stands, it will make perfect sense in time. You don't have any tortilla chips... ...you've got a bunch of corn chips, which are extruded and lacking in texture, but not actually made from tortillas. LaRosa Totopos are tortilla chips that all other gross outs sell. They should be popular. I understand you've just opened, but there is a lot of merchandising training that needs to go down in your store. The NOSH items are spread out across two walls, an aisle, and above the freezers. Clif and Rx bars don't live in the athletic/nutrition section, and frozen meatless meats don't belong encircling the frozen chicken. Also, lots of products are sideways on the shelf. I paid $10.99 for 18 eggs. Yes, 18 eggs!!! I realize it's wise to look at prices before putting items in my cart, but I shop here regularly and trusted the store to do right for frugal people like me. The prices are budget friendly; selection on a lot of items is limited but you can find alternatives to what you want. My biggest surprise was the awesome wine selection with amazing prices. Market I love this market. They have a lot of ethnic foods and a lot of offbrand good foods and it's more interesting than Safeway. The wines are unbelievable. You can stand at the bottle and look it up on Google and see that you can buy the same bottle of wine at target for 1299 and get it from them for 499. I recommend them for wine and I recommend them for general shopping. I also love their jingle. read more

Great store. The wine collection is off the chart. Extremely clean. Many candles to choose from. The exact same products, as you would find in any market, are WAY less expensive here. When you open a new cash register when there is a long line, please get the customer in the front of the line and take them to your check stand. Today I was waiting behind two customers with large baskets filled to the brim with merchandise. When you (Edwin or Jonathan?) opened, a bunch of people behind me ran over to your station. They all checked out way before me, while I was still waiting behind the two people with filled baskets. Normally I wouldn't complain, and am happy to wait my turn, but after a 12 hour shift as a frontline worker, I am exhausted and would have liked to get checked out to leave. I know the customers behind me would never do the right thing and say, "hey, I see you were here before me, you go first." Nah, wouldn't happen. Compared to other GO's, the selection is emphasizes beverages more than groceries--like a convenience store. Shopping is very frustrating because many items are not marked with prices and when the price is incorrect, the store does not honor the displayed price (which is accepted practice) but the price rung up by the computer. Bringing the issues to their attention with the intent of improving store operations, instead, staff is not appreciative, but annoyed. Unfortunate because it's a positive to have a GO in the community, but not when they aren't trying to improve. Hoping they will improve. read more

a jar of jam that gets scanned and paid for gets lost in transition from checkout to inevitably roll under the counter to where you pay for it but don't get it bagged - the lazy blonde female employee looked like she was drugged or something.
