Located on the second floor of the West Sac Community Center, this building felt brand new and altogether inviting. Grabbed a vanilla chai tea latte (although the spiced chai tea latte is just as good) from Cafe La Boutique (La Bou), which we were free to take inside the theater as well. The second floor boasted a Sunshine Deck and beautiful "Fluttering Canopy" glass art piece above the main stairwell. Restrooms downstairs with plenty of signage so you couldn't miss them very clean. The Black Box Theatre itself could seat about 125 people max capacity, seats were comfortable (but not the norm cushioned folding type) for the ~2 hour show. Very intimate setting, absolutely perfect for the puppeteering (should I say, Muppeteering?) in Avenue Q, with actors utilizing the onset stage as well as the aisles and exits. Not sure where the orchestra was hiding, although I'm pretty sure there was a live orchestra, hah. Two flatscreens included for the show, not sure if those are normally part of the performance space. Bravo! Easy to get to off of Jefferson Blvd/Tower Bridge Gateway, and we were able to use the Joint Use Parking Area shared by the Community Center and the Library. My only regret? Not getting a photo with Trekkie Monster or the Bad Idea Bears.

I think it's a great venue that deserves support for what they are trying to do and not bashing. It certainly doesn't deserve the graffitti and vandalism some "punks" put on it this weekend, which of course is more costs for the venue to have. By the way the booking person is in a couple punk bands, so while the adults running the place might not be in the scene, others are.

Different people gave us different reasons why we weren't paid. Ultimately, I called them out on a Facebook event and the manager responded defensively...after I pointed out the cracks in what he was saying, he stated they were in the wrong and it wouldn't happen again. I am glad he apologized, but I don't know whether or not he meant it. So make sure you get the payment situation in writing before you start promoting, and make sure you talk to the manager before you start the show.

Sadly, I was so disappointed by this event…read more The biggest issue was HOW HARD IT WAS TO HEAR. Even though the actors were using microphones, much of the dialogue was difficult to make out. The event also requires you to talk with people at your table and move around the room to gather clues, but it was very hard to hear those conversations as well. Because the whole experience depends on hearing what others are saying, that made participating in the mystery frustrating. The other issue was pacing, it always felt like we were being rushed to do our next steps. The ACTORS THEMSELVES WERE EXCELLENT, and the mystery and the overall format seemed well designed. It felt like it could have been a really fun event, but the noise and acoustics made it hard to follow what was happening. There was also one issue with the food service. I could not get a glass of water for quite a while, even though I asked multiple times. I was extremely thirsty and eventually had to stand near where the waitstaff entered the room and wait until someone could bring me a glass. Overall, the concept and performers were good, but the SOUND AND ROOM SETUP MADE IT DIFFICULT TO ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE.

And if I do go see a movie these days, I check the showtimes here first. So this theater is directly across the street from the Folsom Outlets, tucked in the back. It's walking distance from a Taco Express, a Filipino eatery, and Indian restaurant, a pizza parlor, a bar, and a few other restaurants/eateries. It's a great location for those that would rather eat real food before or after the movie than spending $67.38 on a large popcorn and a Coke. I wouldn't go so far as to refer to this theater as a "no-thrills" movie experience, but it definitely doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Palladio or the Regal in El Dorado Hills. While they do have a few sporadic 3-D movie showings, you're out of luck if you're looking for an IMAX, D Box, or ScreenX experience. With that being said, the tickets here are definitely cheaper than the aforementioned theaters. A matinee here runs about $10 during the weekday, which is about $7-8 cheaper than a similar showtime at the Palladio, for the same movie. The concession stand is also more basic as well. I can't recall all their options off the top of my head, but they do have plenty of popcorn, drinks, and candy. If that's not going to do it for you, the Filipino place next door is really good. Definitely a more satisfying option than nachos or a hot dog. Five stars seems appropriate for this venue. If it was more expensive, I would bring down the rating. But if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on movie tickets, don't like crowds, don't want to stress about parking, love Filipino food, and you're looking to do some retail therapy shopping nearby, give this theatre a try.

I was driving by the…read moreColonial Theater on my way to Forgotten Bakery and saw that Rocky Horror Picture Show would be playing in July. I immediately searched for more information and talked to some of my friends about it and we decided to buy tickets. The ticket portal from Amber's Sweets was easy to navigate and I felt like it was reasonably priced for tickets. The group was also really well organized, got everyone into the venue and the show was great. The last time I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show was in Ohio fifteen years ago and I cannot believe we're almost at the 50th anniversary of Rocky Horror Picture Show. We didn't opt in for the event kits this time, but they looked so fun and were also reasonably priced. Next time I'd definitely add it on. Would 100% go again.

Ambers Sweets are a volunteer shadow cast for Repo! The Genetic Opera that usually peforms at the…read moreColonial Theatre. Think Rocky Horror meets Blade Runner meets rock-opera, but with more guts than you can shake a small intestine at. I've seen the Ambers Sweets perform twice, though I missed their last show. As far as shadow casts go, they are excellent! Everyone was high-energy and had great timing and very expressive body language. They were very creative with sets and props and made use of the entire theatre. I love being at shows where characters dance in the aisles. Though there are Repo! shadow casts all around the country, the Ambers Sweets were the first (and as far as I'm aware, ONLY) casts to suspend their Blind Mag from the ceiling in the opera scene. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, it was difficult to do and looked awesome. If you're a Tash Film Orgy, Rocky Horror, or Mr. Lobo fan this is right down your alley. Grab some blue glow-sticks and get ready to TESTIFY! Their website has all their show dates, and I noticed that someone has been posting them on here too.
