We had a nice 1950's bathroom that needed some 21st century attention. We scoured the designer web…read moresites, gaped at the Merchandise Mart displays, and made the pilgrimage to Ikea. Our final plan was: gut the room; junk the tub; make everything barrier-free, environmentally friendly, and visually attractive. We had a number of concerns regarding the structural, plumbing, and electrical work that we anticipated, on top of the cosmetics of tile installation. After sketching out the existing and intended room layouts (Google Sketchup is great for this.), we did some serious tile shopping. We found a neighborhood tile store that we felt comfortable with. The owner recommended Rudy the Tile Guy as an all-around remodeling expert. Rudy showed up right away, and was reassuringly straightforward regarding our concerns (I can do this; I have done that; I know a guy who does this other stuff, etc..). We shopped the work to a couple of other contractors, but came back to Rudy: the tile supplier liked his work, he was personable, and he was enthusiastic about getting the job. The actual work of course did not go according to plan. When any problems arose, Rudy was accommodating and helpful. He pointed out when plumbing and electrical specialists were needed, and adjusted his schedule accordingly; even took the initiative and contacted the experts himself. Materials issues, structural concerns, fixtures, mounting details, cosmetics--Rudy offered a good balance of advice and respectful listening. We had him a little bit out of his comfort zone (linear shower drain, wedi panels), and he learned quickly. When the tile work finally began, he solved the technical problems of large (12x24) tile installation without any complications. And the final result is Grade A. I recommend Rudy the Tile Guy for his professional expertise and ethical business practices. Regarding bathroom remodeling, I offer some advice: - Use Google SketchUp to draw up a 3-D model of the room - Individually model the room's 6 surfaces, to get your square footage straight - Make the demolition work a separate line item (1950's Chicago bathrooms are built like safe rooms--concrete walls, it's amazing.) - Double-check your materials quantities. Order 10% more than necessary; for big tiles, make it 25%. - Estimate the time needed to accomplish the project's subtasks; double that for calendar time; double again for actual finish date. - Use Rudy the Tile Guy as your bathroom remodeling expert.

Summary: Soma Tile (Lucas) is a partner through the process and his team is comprised of skilled…read moreand courteous professionals. I would not hesitate in referring them to anyone looking for bath and tile work!! Preface: Let me start this tale with some background. This project was not an exciting "Lets update our 20 year old bathroom and make it stylish and pretty". Instead the project started due to an undetected leak, the stress that comes from random water leaking in random places, and was filled with questions and concerns. Countless others "assured" me that this was a plumbing issue or just due to some neglected maintenance on a 5 year old new-install shower - and then wanted to blast holes everywhere to "find" the leak. At the same time, I did not want to rip apart a shower to then find out it might be plumbing and now a full on repair. I felt overwhelmed in making the wrong choice and doing 2 projects chasing my tail. Lucas walked me through all the typical scenarios that he has seen, leaning on the most probably is a structural fail of the shower system and then did a methodical exploration. A couple hours later and a minimal demo, he confirmed that it was in fact not plumbing related and was def. a failure of the shower system -- and walked me through what it would take. Once his team was onsite, they were focused - creating a whole "clean room" at the entry to the bathroom. 1 day demo, 1 day water-proof, 2 days tile - all while providing the proper time for dry-out and leak testing between steps. Lucas is a perfectionist, being critical on the most minor details -- which to someone that also strives for this level, but has no idea what they are looking for, was very much appreciated. Additionally, he has instilled this value in his team - that are true craftsman with their skill. Each step of the process was walked through, discussed, and made sure we understood the task, goal, and expectations. This is why I say Lucas/Soma Tile was a true partner in this project, as it wasn't a fun project -- it was an overwhelming stressful start where Soma Tile helped take some of the burden and concerns off our shoulders and work it through with their own expertise, experience, and dedication - ensuring every step was executed with precision. Soma Tile knows their craft - Lucas is a partner, his team are craftsman. Huge Thanks to Lucas, Jesus, and Miguel -- not to forget Jose who magically appeared on the last day to leave the place spotless.

Lucas patiently reviewed design options with me and provided insightful guidance throughout the install. The attention to the smallest detail, combined with the use of a laser to ensure straight lines of tiles was impressive. No detail was overlooked! The color selection of grout was carefully coordinated with the tile. The workmanship is OUTSTANDING! The team demonstrated the same quality standards as they grouted and cleaned the tile repeatedly. Upon completion, Lucas, and his team cleaned the bathroom, and their work area. Soma tile was on time and a pleasure to work with! They truly are craftsman and take pride in their work. I would strongly recommend Lucas and his team.

Review Update: Second Experience with Marco After my initial…read morereview regarding my positive experience with Bert, I've since worked with Marco on a second project. While Marco is undoubtedly skilled in his craft, I find myself increasingly wary of his professionalism and attention to detail. I feel compelled to share the issues that raised red flags during this latest experience. First, Marco's punctuality is a constant problem. He was almost always late, and he would often have to leave shortly after to pick up supplies--supplies he had somehow forgotten to bring in the first place. This lack of preparation creates unnecessary delays, and I simply couldn't trust that he would arrive or finish on time as planned. There were other concerning issues that built up over time. Marco left the project unfinished for days, leaving work incomplete that didn't rely on other parts of the job. On one occasion, my modem was mysteriously unplugged while work was being done in the bathroom, a minor incident at first, but it raised questions about why he was in my bedroom at all. When I asked him about it, he acted as though he had no idea how it happened, which felt disingenuous given the location of the modem and the fact that it was hidden behind a mirror. As the job progressed, it became clear that Marco was attempting to increase the price unexpectedly. He claimed that I hadn't been charged for everything, including work he had already completed, such as installing tile. This sudden change in pricing was not only confusing but also concerning given the pattern of miscommunication and questionable charges. Furthermore, there were incidents that raised suspicion about his work ethic. For example, when installing a glass shower door, I heard loud clanging and banging noises coming from the other room. Afterward, Marco informed me that the rails for the shower door were too damaged to install. Coincidentally, I had only noticed minor scratches on the rails earlier when he showed them to me, but there were visible dents afterwards. I can't help but wonder if the damage was caused during the loud noises I heard. Marco also damaged freshly painted walls while working. While he did patch the areas, he insisted that it was my responsibility to repaint them. This isn't the standard of care I expect when hiring a contractor, and it felt like he was trying to avoid accountability for his mistakes. Lastly, I found that Marco charged me for items I didn't need, like extra pipe fittings and even a mop, which were never used in the project. He installed a toilet and purchased supplies for install; however when the same toilet was installed in another bathroom everything needed for installation was included in the box. Upon reviewing the receipts, I noticed several discrepancies and questionable charges. For instance, he charged me for connectors intended for a dishwasher, despite the fact that my project was focused on connecting a toilet and sink. Additionally, there were multiple pipe fittings listed that were completely unnecessary and didn't match the required sizes for the project. Even worse, Marco swapped out parts that I had already provided, such as the stainless steel drain I had purchased, and installed a cheaper substitute without consulting me. I'm very cautious about reimbursing contractors for materials, and this experience only reaffirmed my wariness, especially given the discrepancies in the receipts. In conclusion, while Marco is certainly capable and the work he did was good, I would recommend being cautious when hiring him. It's clear that he needs more oversight. I would suggest double-checking his receipts line by line, ensuring you aren't being charged for unnecessary items or parts that are swapped out without your knowledge. His tendency to be late, leave jobs incomplete, and make changes to pricing or materials after the fact makes him less reliable than I would prefer in a contractor. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Marco unless you're prepared to closely monitor the work and ensure that everything is done correctly.
