VERY RARELY do I write an addendum to a review, but in the case of Grundmans, I felt compelled. First, Paul is one of the finest gunsmiths I have ever dealt with. He is magic! He can take a two hour project for us mere mortals, and turn it into a 10 minute light task, all the while shooting the breeze with you as he 'fixes the problem' often with out tools. He just uses an apparent mix of machinist knowledge and zen. He kinda rubs and gently twists the part right back into the rabbit hole, and *PRESTO!* (poof) *FIXED!* Fred, as the 'front man' has communications skill that rival New York Shrinks! He can write up the FFL paperwork, talk to you about the rain in Misoula Montana, the sand blowin in Yuba City, and that trick spot to catch Petrale Sole. Never skips a beat. Fred, Steve, Paul-all well versed in ALL things sport. This store has great ambiance, a nice selection, discounted items (at least to a good price) if you can stand up to it, and here's a tip: feeding the staff is a good way to engage discussions as to a price you want to see! I have known Paul, Fred and the rest of the Grundman's for over 50 years. The Grundmans have been a fixture in shooting sports in N. California for generations for good reason. I joined the Navy many years ago, retired and now live in the Midwest...I now work in one of the big box store firearms outlets. You can't match the experience and depth of knowledge that I gained growing up in Humboldt County--I've lived and hunted in Alaska, Montana, and now in the Midwest. For those SoCal fishermen who were disappointed, maybe your own attitude was the problem. Truth is, there hasn't been much of a salmon run on the Eel River since the 1970s. Guy at the counter was very rude to our group. The Rangers has told us about the local salmon run. We decided to check in with Grundman's for any advice he could give. The shopkeep denied there was any salmon run and said that if we weren't gonna buy anything, we had to leave. We were literally in and out of the store in about 30 seconds because of this guy's attitude. We have met some really nice locals, but these guys just chased us away. read more

Grundman's is as good as it good when you talk sporting goods. My primary focus is shooting, archery, hunting, and fishing. Fred and the crew will bend over backwards to make sure the equipment is proper, fits right, and is the best possible tool for the job!. I traded in a handgun to get outfitted for archery after years out of the sport. Fred got me into a used bow set up, nice array of arrows & practice tips and a solid release. Even living at the other end of Humboldt County, I try to get to Grundman's every couple of months. They have sold me several firearms, and my last one which was a new in the box CZ-75BD had to be special ordered - it was well worth the wait! I think that I have bought at least 8 firearms from them over the last few years. Some have been impulse buys in seeing something on display that caught my eye, and it called to me to take them home! No problems on processing the necessary FFL paperwork, and the gunsmithing service is 2nd to none here in remote Humboldt County. Grundman's has an extensive selection of ammunition, even in odd Soviet-Bloc calibers. Plus they are very knowledgeable on the local areas for hunting and fishing info! read more

This is the best sporting goods store in California. I've been coming here since I was a small kid and they have always treated me like family. Paul the gunsmith can do anything you need done, and I will guaruntee that he is the best at it. I would advise anyone to take thier fire arms here. I brought my model 66 .357 in to have a millet sight put on it . It took me 3 years to find one on eBay ... There were no modifications to be done to it just a stepped hole drilled in it . Paul called me and said he ruined it when cutting it down , it did not need to be cut . He probably sold it to someone instead as it was a discontinued Millet target sight ... Don't trust him he's crooked and if he doesn't like you will screw you over ... read more

Fred is a miracle worker and very persistent I might add!! I was in Grundmans over two months ago ordering a 20 guage. Definitely not not top of the line but a very nice gun never the less. Well the weeks went on by and no gun. Fred persisted and told me not to give up hope. We could always order something not quite as nice but let's keep trying. Today I called and the gun was going to arrive either today or tomorrow. He had bought it from another dealer in Colorado. Need I say more and it made it time for duck season!! I spent 2 years going to gun shows to find a millett rear sight for my S&W model 66, I figured Paul was the guy to put it on ... Drill and counter bore a hole was all he had to do ... Then he calls me and tells me he messed it up while cutting it ? And when my wife picked up the gun it had a used sight on it ... They did not even give give me my old sight back or the one they messed up ... That was an irreplaceable gun sight , brand new ... Either Paul is getting too old to do gunsmithing or he just wanted my sight to resell ... I will never go back there , and I will give my opinion when asked ... Thanks for nothing Paul ... read more

very rude over the phone, customer service is definitely lacking. Its hit or miss with these guys, you either have an exceptional experience or in my case a pretty piss poor one. Its definitely a good old boys club there and if your not in it forget getting good customer service. read more
