Try G's for the first time. I just wanted to try the basic sandwich first. I love the bread it was crispy and fresh. The steak is tender and no fatty pieces in my sandwich. I will go back and try a couple different sandwiches. My only complaint is I wish the sandwich was just bigger from the bread to the amount of meat they put it in it especially for the amount it costs. As you can see in the picture it wasn't overflowing with meat. Ok so I went a 2nd time and tried the south west sandwich. I did not really enjoy it. On straws were more like big chunks of onions and not the little thin crispy straws I was expecting. These sandwiches are just to small for my liking and there top dollar price tags. I really like a few things about the cheesesteaks at G's Steaks and Grinders. First, for the two times I've been, they haven't overcooked the steaks. Sounds simple? I can't even count the number of times I've watched a griller continue cooking a cheesesteak well past the time when it's done. Sometimes for five additional minutes. G's sliced ribeye steaks are cooked through and still somewhat soft, rather than coarse from overcooking. Probably because G's has nothing to hide. Advantage G's! Second, their steaks don't taste like everybody else's steaks. My six inch modified "G's Steak" had onions, peppers, mushrooms, banana peppers, mayo and American cheese. Each of the components was very good. And the steak had a nice, understated garlic flavor. I can't think of another steak in the area with that flavor profile. I respect that. Third, the bread is very good, and different than the bread other places use. If I recall correctly from my first visit, the bread is custom-sourced. It's medium crusty, and still soft underneath the outer crust. It has just the right amount of bread to contain the fillings, without taking over the show. I don't know if I'm prepared to declare an area cheesesteak winner yet, but I think G's is certainly in the mix. Even if you don't think you've been to G's, there's a good chance you have been. It's located where Lena's First and Last used to be on Park Road. Bet you had some slices there. I know I did. G's did a nice job making the location theirs. They've got cool Hartford and steak themed graffiti art on the outside. The inside has a minimalist vibe with several seats for dining in. I've found the service at G's to be welcoming and conscientious. I've noted a good deal of pride in the product and service when I go. I'd recommend G's if you like cheesesteaks. Is it the best cheesesteak ever? No but but but... The choices around Hartford are slim and kudos to Gs for laying down a marker and making a darn good cheesesteak. As someone who went to school in Philly, I love me a good cheesesteak. I got one with wiz, onions, peppers and mushrooms. Took a little while but made from scratch so no complaints. Ribeye is mostly delicious. A little (and I mean just a little) chewy in a bite or two. The cheese wiz was excellent! An understated piece of the dish is actually the bread. While it held up under the travel and didn't collapse under the sauce, it was a little one note for me. The bay fries recommended to me were far better than at first glance. I kept popping bite after bite in. The fries are fairly standard. Price for this goodness including a water? Over $20! That's where they lose me a little. It was very good but paying over $20? Hmmm. That said, service could not have been nicer and I see myself coming back for sure. Maybe some pizza sauce in the future? Looking forward to seeing them continue to develop. Delicious!! Not only is the food on point, but the staff is nice and the place smells good. You know how you go into a restaurant and you can smell the food and you leave smelling like your meal, ya that doesn't happen here. Damn good. I was thrilled when I heard this place had opened up in the area formerly known as Lena's. I'm always looking for a good cheesesteak and G's delivers, big time. The place has been completely revamped and bears no resemblance to Lena's. It's super sleek and bright. I like the open kitchen and grill area too. I ordered two sandwiches to go over the phone. They were ready in 20 minutes. My wife had the G's Steak which comes with onions, peppers, mushrooms and American Cheese. I did a build your own sandwich (I'm not a fan of grilled bell pepper) and had one with steak, onions, mushrooms, Wiz and chipotle mayo. It truly fit the picture perfect definition of "steak bomb". We hummed little bursts of happiness while eating our lunch. I tried hers too (peppers be damned) and it was delicious and far less messy than mine. The steak was plentiful and most important to me, not fatty. The bun was a fair match to a beasty sandwich, not too soft, not too hard-just right. I'm guessing the guy who was working the grill when I arrived is "G". He was very warm and friendly. He was enthusiastic as heck too and said he wants this place to be "what Hartford is all about". I want to love this place but despite trying it fifteen times over the last few years I've come to the point of giving up on it. I recommend you try it for yourself. They offer pretty good grinders with steak. That's right....To call them Philly style cheesesteaks is a little misleading. I know we could argue about this all day, but despite the food being pretty good it is the service that makes the food taste worse than it really is. What really ended it for me was the nickle and diming by the owner and the poor, and even sometimes strange service you get. There is definitely a disconnect with the people expediting the food and the ones taking the orders/selling it. Go find out for yourself though, you might enjoy the experience and the food. This place has been on my yelp to-try list for a long while. So we were in west hartford running errands and decided let's stop here on the way back to East Hartford. We strolled in around 7:30ish and we're enthusiastically greeted by Mike G. Himself from behind the counter holding one of his kids while another one of his kids was sitting behind the counter. Mike was very eager to answer any questions on the menu and we were talking about the crab fries as the mother of the kids came out to get them home (I'm assuming she was the mom lol). She also chimes in about the fries and it gave the whole place a bobs burgers vibe which I loved! A guy making simple, great quality food, enjoying what he does, with the kiddos around! No lie I wanted one of everything on the menu I was so hungry. Mike also mentioned the churros for dessert, regular and Bavarian crime filled. Ummmm yes of course I want those too! Truth be told I'm a big guy so upselling me on the churros wasn't a hard sell . I had the original cheesesteak, fries and a fountain soda while my other half had the chicken bacon ranch sammich with fries and a fountain soda. I don't know what kind of sub/hogie/grinder roll they use but it was really good. I think they might slather some oil or butter on it and warm it up because it was perfectly melded with the sand which filling making it one whole experience. I know it sounds crazy but that made a big difference in the quality of the sandwich. The chicken bacon ranch was amazing according to reports from my other half. He just sat there next to me ( we sat at the counter which was great) devouring his dinner. Here is where I was impressed; when he placed the containers with the fries in front of us I immediately noticed the lids have poked holes in them so the fries don't get soggy from the steam! I've never understood why more places don't do this! The fries are still hot just not soggy! This guy gets it!!!! While waiting for our food we had great conversation from Mike and his friend (I didn't catch his name) that was manning the grill. I wanted to order a second sandwich because I was so hungry and sitting there reading the menu made me want the southwest steak next but I didn't. My husband said there's always next time.
