'Shroom Burger
John D.

Just happening to be in the area, Zack's seemed like a great opportunity to sample this much praised establishment; and, so I did. Over the years, this not so much to look at address has housed everything from middle of the road diners to higher end restaurants; and, the impression I got when I entered was that each of them had left some of the decor behind. That being said, It was clean and comfortable, with a homey feel to it. The staff at the counter was welcoming and courteous, giving each of the steadily flowing customers her full attention. I ordered the double 'shroom burger and took a seat for what would a less than ten minute wait. Upon removing the foil wrapper, it was clear that the two prominent Patty's, inside a soft bun, would be enough to satisfy my hunger; but, knowing that there are plenty of unappetizing things that could fill my belly, the taste was my main concern. So, I bit right in. My first bite, and all that came after, proved each, thick, patty was packed with juicy goodness, but not so much that I would wearing it on my jacket. The 'shrooms provided a pleasant after taste, that couldn't be denied. So, why three stars? One word: mustard. With each bite, my fingers were coated in yellow, making me think I should have taken more napkins with me. The cheese, although plentiful, was rendered flavorless by this over ample condiment. In short, what started off ahead, ended in a mid place finish. At just over twelve bucks, before tip, the price seemed fair, considering prices these days. In the end, I felt I could have done worse; but, I could have done better.

What a great burger shack!! This is exactly how you do a great burger shack... small to-the-point menu, homemade and executed correctly. The staff was super friendly and partnered with a cute and comfy diner-like interior makes for a great quick eatery. We started with a cup of beef stew (homemade and delish) and a peanut butter milkshake. Very much appreciate the large pieces of pb cups in the shake - partnered with a large straw. Then came the dog, hamburger, and fries. All executed well. Overall, will definitely return if we are in the area for a classic burger shack lunch/dinner.

Not long ago, I tried to visit Zack's for the first time at their old location, only to arrive and discover that they were in the process of moving and closed for an indefinite period. I'm not going to lie -- I was fairly annoyed at the time because I drove out of my way to visit and they didn't post that information on any Socials that I could find to give people like me a heads up. I learned last week that they were in their new Berlin location near Coles Road Brewing, where I believe a restaurant called the Cornerstone may have been. Since I was nearby, I decided to try again. I'm now a fan of their food. The inside is small, but nice. The outside at this stage is not a plus and they have temporary signage that is not eye catching. I assume that's all in process. I ordered a BYO double smash burger with Swiss and sautéed mushrooms, onions and chipotle mayo. The burger was huge and the patties were juicy. The burgers needed a bit more salt, but the cheese, onions and mushrooms were all very good. I'm fairly certain they missed the chipotle mayo because I don't see it in my pics and I didn't taste it. By the time I noticed, i just went with Ketchup. In any event, the burger was very good and had the potential to be great. The fries and my peanut butter shake were both good. The fries seemed a bit battered and cut to medium. The milkshake was handmade and tasty. It had chunks of PB cup -- I believe. I definitely recommend checking out Zack's at their new location. And I wish them luck. I also encourage them to use their Socials better in the future to keep people updated. 4.25 Stars

I stopped at Zack's Burgers and Shakes on Saturday afternoon, and had a great experience. I ordered a mushroom burger, garlic fries (omg) and a strawberry milkshake. I ate inside. Everything was clean and the food came promptly. I think this is a hidden gem. I'll be returning to try other items on the menu and order more fries.

Lots of room for improvement here. Upon arrival, you realize this place is located in the back corner of a strip mall that looks partially abandoned in the middle of no where. Then upon walking in, this place seemed a little dark and depressing. Reminded me of when a store closes down for the day and they leave the emergency lights on to deter midnight robberies. They need to work on making this place more friendly and approachable. The person taking care of us came off as rude many times. Like at least pretend you care. We ordered this mushroom burger, a baja burger and some french fries. All were very good. Tasty and greasy goodness. Exactly what you would expect from a restaurant like this. In my opinion, you should just order your food at the counter and seat your self. That would be much more appropriate for this type of burger joint. That being said, overall, Goldburgers blows this place out of the water. Like how do you run out of chocolate ice cream for your milkshakes? You couldn't just sacrifice a few dollars and drive down the street quickly just one time? Sorry, I had to say it.

Classic Americana for sure. Classic mom n pop joint. Kind of reminds me of the first place I worked in. Love the burgers. The Zach burger had awesome flavor and a touch of crunch with potato chips on there. Yes I'm addicted to potato chips and apparently Zach is too so that suits my needs perfectly lol. The black and blue burger is fab too. The junior is good if you're not super hungry and the double has a second patty if you're hangry or just plain have a hankering to chow down. The onion rings were huge and tasty. The sweet potato friends were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside (in a good way). Will definitely be back to try more burgers and the list of milkshakes is calling my name. Salted caramel and Reese's?!? Yes please. I would have indulged in one today but it was a little too chilly... but that will be changing soon. Looking forward to it! :)

First time here and so glad we found this place! The girls working up front were so nice and welcoming. The food was so delicious! The burger and cod sandwich was so tasty!! The French fries were so crispy too!!! If you go, definitely get a milkshake too!!! We'll definitely be back, this is our new burger joint!

So glad I decided to try a different burger spot than my usual. This is a hidden gem. Friendly and fast service. Burger was good and made as ordered. I definitely recommend the garlic parmesan fries! They're crispy and the best I've had. I'll definitely be going back.

They made us feel welcome and were very helpful to us newbies. Our orders were taken and we were explained the process. Most of the condiments are self-serve. Both times I had the chili, yellow mustard and onions. My wife had Cole Slaw on her first one and Sauerkraut and mustard the second week. We made quite the mess but enjoyed the food. The hot dogs are very tasty and cooked just the way I we like them, a little char but not burnt. We had to cut the dogs into quarters and the rolls held up fine. The chili, while it tastes good is a little bland and my wife would have liked a little more flavor in the Sauerkraut too. The order of fries is large, hot and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The store is a nostalgic walk into the past with retro fixtures, tables and decorations. It's fun to read the 45's that line the walls while enjoying these dogs. The dogs are a novelty and are good enough to come back for. One of the things that caught my attention was the juicer. They have an actual orange juice machine and I wanted to try that juice so bad and when ai did I couldn't believe how good it tasted. Our food was good also, the only thing I didn't like was how small the portions were, you can actually count my potatoes, by the time the dish made it to me they were cold. Pancakes very plain. Im a huge fan of eggs Benedict so I decided to try the country Benedict( 4th of July special) , a bit dry because of the biscuit and not enough sauce but tasted good. I would come back for the OJ

Their menu when I visited them at Coles Road Brewing in Berlin consisted of specialty hot dogs, build your own hot dogs, seasoned and topped tots, quesadillas and wraps. I ordered a hot dog with house kraut and spicy brown mustard and Ranch seasoned tots. Service was friendly and efficient. The tots were very good and they had a good crispy outer texture. The seasoning was flavorful. I was told that Rescue Dogs uses Sabrett dogs, which was not a name I knew. Sabrett makes at least a skinless beef Frank and a natural casing dog. I think this was the natural casing dog because I can see a skin in my pic. Sabrett is associated with New York hot dog styles and I saw that it has performed very well in taste tests against other national brands. I thought the dog had good flavor, but it wasn't as snappy as I like at least as cooked on this night. The kraut and mustard were both fairly good, but didn't stand out relative to my favorite area spot. I understand that Rescue Dogs is based in Wolcott and I've seen them on the Coles Road schedule a few times. Rescue Dogs is worth checking out, especially in light of the causes they support. 3.75 Stars

Their kielbasa is my go to choice for similar reasons. Although, I can buy Rosol's at most, if not all of the area places where I buy groceries, I've been curious about the retail shop for a while. The Rosol's New Britain facility is multi-purpose. It's where they execute at least certain aspects of production. It appears to be the distribution hub. And it has a retail store. The retail store is behind a a Vault Door. The store is essentially inside a cooler. So why would you visit the NB Retail Shop rather than just buy MR's products in stores? The MR product choices are wider and easier to find since they're all in one room. They have curated some products like pickles, mustard and kraut they think go with their meats. If you're a Blackie's Hot Pepper Relish fan, for instance, they sell jars of it. They sell a very well seasoned chili in cartons that goes well with their dogs. The fact that you're buying everything at the source in a cold environment, makes me think you're getting max fresh food. The dogs I grilled last night were great. In addition, I picked up some other cool food when I was in New Britain. 5 Stars

Friendly staff, well staffed (which is not something you see too often nowadays). I love the more modern feel, and of course the faint Frankie statue. The food was amazing, restaurant was clean, plenty of seating. My boyfriend got a hot dog with peppers and onions with steak fries. I got a grilled cheese and curly fries(same as I used to get a child lol, I was feeling nostalgic) He also got a soda and I got a water, all of this for around $22-23 About the same price (maybe a few dollars more) if we had gone to a regular fast food chain, but def worth the extra money. Plus I always love supporting a local business. It was also great to see they even had some of the old arcade games to play for free, I wanted to play but didn't, because all I'm thinking of is people eating with their hands and then touching the controls with unclean hands, maybe it's just the post covid era Only recommendation I have would be to have a hand sanitizer near the game. Such an amazing place!

Geez, this had to be the worst visit ever at Frankie's…read more Here the place was hopping, people were happy, was it me? Met a friend here for a quick bite to eat. My friend ordered a cheeseburger, the small one, with lettuce and tomato on it, along with I think a lemonade I took a chance on the special which was loaded french fries. Steak fries with cheese whiz, bacon bits, sour cream and a little bit of chives. I also ordered a Pepsi. The bill came to $22 and change for the two of us. Keep that in mind as I further write. The cheeseburger, the quarter pound one, included one little little slice of lettuce and a very thin slice of tomato. The beef on the cheeseburger looked gray, and pink inside like it wasn't even cooked up to temperature. This was absolutely gross, served on a non toasted Sesame seed roll. He thought it was awful. He ate half of it. Now for my loaded french fries.... The french fries were so soggy , that if they didn't look like french fries they could be mistaken for mashed potatoes, loaded with an extremely salty cheese whiz, and what looked like bacon bits instead of natural bacon on top, chives, and sour cream. It would've been nice if there was chili on this instead, but nope. For $7.99, the serving was extremely small, probably good for a six-year-old. Barely edible, I ate about a quarter of it and just pushed it aside saying I'm done. I can't even imagine the salt content that was in this. I know one thing for sure it was extremely high! This had to be one of the worst things I have ever been served in any restaurant. Stick to the hotdogs as they are safe For the money spent, we would've been better off going to Chili's.

Crispy on the outside, packed with well-seasoned chicken inside. Good spice, not overpowering. Came with a salsa and a ketchup-mayo style sauce, both worked, but the salsa had a little more life to it. Before that, warm ciabatta hit the table with a house-made dipping sauce. Oil-based with garlic, blue cheese, and a few other layers going on. The blue cheese gave it a subtle kick without taking over. Nice way to start. Now to the burger, the Luger Burger. I'm assuming it's a nod to the classic steakhouse, but didn't get full confirmation. The sauce is made in-house: slightly sweet, a little acidic (I picked up balsamic), smooth texture. It's a good sauce, it just needed a bigger voice on this burger. The burger itself is large. And I mean large. Menu said thick-cut bacon... that wasn't the case. Not a dealbreaker, but noticeable. Now I'm going to get a little critical, because this is where it matters. The burger needed more salt. There's a lot of beef here, and it can absolutely handle it. Even something as simple as salting the tomato would've helped bring things together. If the bacon had actually been thick-cut, that alone might've bridged the gap. This was a very beef-forward burger, to the point where the supporting flavors barely showed up. The patty felt a bit too tightly packed, which gave it a denser bite and let the beef dominate the whole experience. A looser grind or lighter hand forming it would've made it more tender and allowed everything else to come through. It also needed more acid. The Luger sauce was applied lightly, so either lean into it more or bring in something else, a pickle, a sharper onion, something to cut through the richness and balance it out. The bun was soft, nicely toasted, and held up well, which isn't easy with a burger this size. Fries were hand-cut, properly salted, and exactly what you want. No complaints there. Overall, this is a great spot. Clean, comfortable, nicely decorated. Staff was excellent. Food was good, with flashes of being really good. With a few small tweaks, mainly balance and execution on the burger, this could easily jump to the next level.
