Disturbing Experience with Racial Profiling at Beechwood Shopping Plaza I had a deeply troubling experience at Beechwood Shopping Plaza that I feel obligated to share. After working out at Orangetheory and enjoying a meal from Playa Bowls, I sat on a shaded bench outside, waiting for my wife who was shopping at T.J. Maxx. Moments later, I was approached by a police officer responding to a report that someone matching my exact description--a Black man--had followed someone through the parking lot and broken into their car. I was stunned. The only car I had been inside was my own. Despite checking my ID and confirming I had done nothing wrong, the officer continued to question me, followed me to my car, and never once acknowledged that the report was false. No apology. No accountability. Just humiliation. The officer explained that this plaza is considered "unsafe" and "overrun with homeless people and crime"--which apparently justifies false accusations and targeting people who are simply shopping, eating, and spending their hard-earned money. This experience was racial profiling. I was treated as a suspect, not a customer. Beechwood needs to take responsibility for the environment it enables and work with law enforcement to ensure that safety doesn't come at the expense of dignity, equity, and basic human respect. Still, no apologies from Beechwood Shopping Plaza or the ACC police department. Until that happens, I will not be returning--and I urge others to consider what kind of community this shopping center is fostering. Update: ACC police department has apologized that I was a subject of racial profiling by a person calling in what they thought was a crime. In reviewing the body cam footage of the responding officer they did not find that he broke protocol in his interactions with me. read more

Bought tickets on line but had no confirmation email. Called and was told to come the seats were saved. Showed up to find that in order to address the tickets the outside ticket counter was closed. You had to stand in the extremely long line at the concession stand. The first person couldn't help nor the manager. The person on the phone finally spoke up and loved out. Also this was the first time I went to the theater who serves popcorn and doesn't have any napkins. Poor management!!! Find somewhere else to go to! Yes still gross as earlier described, should have read reviews before coming. After being seated, people with tickets showed up for those seats. Addressed with manager who was no help. Also another female said she talked to me on the phone and basically called me a liar. Everyone was upset and worked together so people had a seat. Our first time in a theater since COVID started. Read how they were handing Covid & as service industry workers thought we'd give it a chance on Christmas. No do not Believe it. We reserved seats online days in advance and it says to leave 2 seats between each set. Well we get there and some people are In our seats and they said the manager said they could sit wherever they wanted. Really!? Why did I reserve seats to try and be safe? And why does this movie theater not take Covid seriously? Why are other theaters closing? This may be why. I wish I could say it was different. We all are doing our best and we all need jobs. I spent hard earned cash at your business. A reasonable expectation is that you are actually flowing what you say you are doing to keep people safe. Next time mark the seats. Do something. It's a movie theater. It's... well, yeah. It's a theater. Staff are helpful and friendly, and UGA students (or, rather, college students in general) can get student discounts by showing their students IDs. So why three stars? It's not the staff; they're perfectly fine. It's also not the facilities or appearance: the bathrooms are spotless and the theater rooms have clean, reclining seats (though, the headrests aren't exactly the most comfortable). It's the fact that whenever I watch a movie here, I can hear the sounds of the movies playing in the adjacent rooms. Is it noticeable during louder scenes? No. But when the audio comes down for your movie during, say, a quiet conversation, you can most definitely hear explosions (and other sound effects) from the next theater down. This is, of course, less of a problem if the particular movie you're watching is also action-packed and loud the whole time. But if you're watching something even moderately moody (e.g., Blade Runner 2049), you're gonna be annoyed. Basically, I'm knocking this place down because the noise isolation and/or sound deadening is poor. You come to a cinema to watch movies - if it fails to provide you a good experience with that, it's subpar. read more

Went here to watch the Joker when it originally came out. The theater wasn't that packed, and it was quick to get a ticket. Came here ages ago to see different movies, but I didn't realize they renovated to have reclining seats that are ACTUALLY COMFY UNLIKE AMC!!! In the end, it was a good experience, and this will now be my go to theater for Athens since it has great seats and service. read more

Was out to see a movie with my daughters, we checked on their website for show time before we went there. When we arrived, they said that the movie was not playing on that day. Just be careful with their only show times. We ended up going to B&B and Was glad that i did. Much nicer theater with great foods and incline heated seat. read more

The seats were nice. Big seats. It wasn't crowded. The staff seemed friendly. The sound system and screen were on par. But all of this is pointless when it's almost 80 degrees outside and you don't turn on the AC. Entertainment has some simple rules. It must be dark. It must be quiet. It must be cool. No one want to sit and watch a show or a movie and sweat. I've been here before. This has happened before. I thought it might've been an isolated incident. Clearly ... It's not. I can deal with stale popcorn. I can't sit for 2 hours and enjoy a movie if I'm constantly thinking about the beads of sweat that are accumulating on my forehead. read more

This cinema wasn't bad. It's like the only cinema around Athens that was playing good movies. The only downside was the not-so-comfy chairs in the 3-D room. They had reclining chairs, but it was the manual recliners instead of the automatic that I thought it would be. Anywho, the inside of the establishment was nice. Bathrooms were clean, and staff was nice. UGA students get student discounts. It was a bit difficult to find, because my google maps took me the back way.. Great theater! The wait times for the counter are usually super short, and they also have a kiosk to order tickets. Super clean restrooms when I went. Cheap ticket prices. They have a good selection of movies, and they show older movies through Flashback Cinema. read more

I literally paid 50 dollars to watch a movie with my family and it was terrible. People do not know how to be quiet and be respectful at the movies in this location. Not only did at least 15 people talk during the entire movie, they were constantly stomping up and down the stairs. I even asked them to stop and they just continued to talk and crack jokes. WARNING: if you want to watch actually watch a movie, DON'T come here. I suggest University 16 Cinemas instead; at least they have better chairs. read more

For popular movies, this is a great place. Large seats. Good popcorn. And (reasonably) friendly staff. Of course, but they seem to have a better sound system and they don't announce start times which are significantly padded for commercials. For mainstream movies, this is by far the best place in Athens to go. read more

zero stars isn't and option :( STAFF CANNOT BE TRUSTED. My bag was left behind during the last showing. We couldn't get back in or anyone to pick up when we called immediately after leaving so we just called before they were open to the public the next day and they could not find it. The loss of the bag is whatever but just knowing that someone employed by the company, cleaners or otherwise, would be low enough to take it is very disappointing human behavior and we will never be returning. Staff unhelpful or remorseful at the apparent theft. I would encourage others there are many other better quality theaters in the area:(Cine first and foremost or Carmike on Lexington) I recently got MoviePass(highly recommended) so I've been checking out all the local theaters as it's been years since I've been to some like this one. Regardless of the bag incident this theater would have ranked bottom of the barrel regardless. Sound was so quiet compared to the other theaters and you can hear the loud portions of the nearby movies coming through. The main points of a good theater experience for me begin with great sound and image quality. a fail on either end and I'd rather just enjoy the movie more somewhere else. read more

LOVE this cinema. They renovated a few years ago and it's really nice. Not as crowded as the other theatres in town.

The upgrades on this theatre are quite amazing. I have been frequenting the new theatre by Jennings Mill for a while now since it is close to my apartment, but the seats at Beechwood theatre are so cozy and comfortable that I have been going across town more often! They also give discounts because I have a student ID, and the staff is always friendly! read more

I will not be returning to this theater ever again. Horrible experience on 22 May 2015. The renovations are very nice, but the audience was obnoxious. Not a single employee entered the theater during the entire movie, and the crowd talked, screamed, checked their phones, took pictures, etc the entire time. They offer a UGA discount, but it's worth the extra four bucks to go over to U16. read more

I'm surprised this place isn't out of business yet. The staff, with their piercings in any oraface in which they can, are so rude it's like you the customer, are bothering them by being there. Add to that the fact that they can't do simple tasts like count money and it's just all too frustrating. It would be nice if they just bathed and looked like respectable people. With the new theater opening this year and the new one that just opened on 316, this one won't be around long. read more
