Menu with the wrong prices.
A'Lissa O.

Stopped for some quick fish tacos right outside the Polynesian Cultural Center... they weren't too quick. Prices posted are not correct. They said they are in the process of getting a new sign. Really? After I ordered, I asked if they were on corn or flour and they said I could choose. But if I hadn't asked, no choice would have been offered. After 10 minutes I got some okay tacos. Fish had skin on, lettuce, salsa, guacamole. Old school rice and lukewarm canned black beans. Not worth $18, but edible.

The service was good. I was able to walk up to the food truck and place my order. There isn't much ambiance as it is a food truck but the service was good and the staff were friendly. Prices were average for Hawaii. The food was pretty good and exceeded my expectations.

Small fish with no flavor in the tacos.
Michelle M.

We were really excited to try this place. The pictures on the menu look amazing. We had the fish tacos, taco salad with beef, the hukilau burrito with shrimp and the chimichanga with chicken. The fish tacos were an utter disappointment! Small pieces of tasteless fish with mushy corn tortillas and a little lettuce, guacamole and pico. But there was so little flavor and substance! Probably the worst fish tacos I've ever had unfortunately. The taco salad wasn't much better. The beef was a dry pot roast that lacked flavor. And the shredded lettuce was so prominent that it lacked lots of flavor as well. It did have a little pico and guacamole as well as sour cream, but it was mostly lettuce and dry meat. It really needed a dressing of some kind. A cilantro lime dressing would have helped a ton. The shrimp burrito was really tasty and so was the chimichanga. It had a lot of chicken and good flavor. It could have been deep fried a little more. But overall we were mostly disappointed with the meal. I probably wouldn't ever come back based on half of our meals being super lackluster.

Veggie Burrito

Had lunch here as a quick option before spending the day at the Polynesian Cultural Center. It's part of the market area before the entrance which has a few other options to check out. The menu was labeled with what was vegetarian and gluten free so if you have those diets (which we did in our party) you go in knowing they are conscious of these things and you will be able to eat something. I had the Veggie Burrito which was hearty and good...I generally prefer pinto or refried beans, but neither of those are vegetarian here so had it with black beans. I was quite filled when it was done done and thought this had a nice authentic flavor to it. The person who took our order seemed awfully unhappy to be there which is not typical of Hawaii and bummed us out a little. This is a good quick stop (well it was quick for us...a bit a line developed after we ordered) before heading into the center for the day. There's plenty of seating behind the truck too.

We were on the hunt for tacos... found one in laie located at PCC. Checked this Yelp review and PHOTOS ARE NOT THE SAME AS WHAT YOU RECEIVE! I was pretty upset with it. Grilled fish taco - really salty, they say they put slaw on it but was just lettuce. Said grilled shrimp taco on menu - it was shrimp cocktail Kine shrimp . Yes it was cold. Steak taco not even a carne asada taco. No taste what so ever. Rice - was hard as hell with floral flavor and really dry Black beans - open can and put cheese. Was room temp. Customer service - girl was on her phone while I ordered and I was more irked when she kept saying "what?" And made me repeat! I really wanted to love it but not even the birds wanted it.

Carnitas chimichanga, $17
Shayna R.

$15 for the chimichanga and $2 to substitute for the carnitas. Came with refried beans, guacamole, Spanish rice, sour cream, and a little salad topping. The chimichanga wasn't super heavily deep fried but enough to give a nice crisp to the tortilla. There was a generous portion of pork in it too. A little pricey but it is in a touristy area with a fun vibe so we'd prob return if in the area.

Their Kalua Pork is all the things--salty, smoky, juicy, tender, shredded meaty goodness. Their Squid Luau is perfect--the right balance of savory, mildly coconutty, melty luau leaves with bits of chewy squid. The Lomi Salmon has a nice bite from the red and green onions, the freshness from the tomatoes, and that briny saltiness. The Mac-Potato Salad was creamy and chunky, with a little bit of carrot and onion for freshness. The Lau Lau was loving assembled. Each foil packet was lined with a small piece of Ti leaf for flavor. The inside of the Lau Lau contained a piece of sweet potato, a chuck of salted pork, and a small piece of fat to keep everything succulent. More places should put sweet potatoes in their Lau Lau--I'm a fan. The catering buffet also had Chicken Long Rice which looked great with thick rice noodles and lots of chicken and green onions, but I skipped it because I didn't want to pour soup on my plate. I also skipped the white rice and fresh green salad. Another reason to seek out the Fat Poi truck is they do poke bowls and you can get combos to try more things. We ordered the Spicy Shrimp and the Shrimp Scampi plates, and neither was impressive. The food came out almost instantly, which proves it is not cooked to order. Because it sits around, the shrimp is incredibly difficult to peel. Anyone who cooks shrimp knows that if you do not peel it right after cooking, the shell sticks to the meat, which was exactly the case here. The Spicy Shrimp had a decent kick, but it lacked actual flavor. The Shrimp Scampi was better but still bland. Honestly, 9 out of 10 shrimp places back home in Southern California make a better plate. To make things worse, the two ladies managing the truck were rude. My wife asked for extra napkins, not realizing some were already in the bag. The worker snapped back, "Are those not enough?" and made her feel super awkward. We also asked for a cup of ice to go with our canned sodas. They flatly refused and told us to ask another truck nearby. Luckily, the other truck owners were much nicer and gave us the ice. Save your time and money. There are much better, friendlier options out there.

We drove up to get there just before noon on a Saturday. It was rainy, so the numbers were a bit light in the area, but there were still thirteen people in line when the truck opened for business. The owner was fun, friendly, and engaging the customers in conversations while prepping the food. There are times when I think some food truck owners take on the role of a short order cook and get annoyed that you don't understand "how" you're supposed to order; that was certainly NOT the case here. You just need to decide if you want a hot or regular sandwich and whether you want bleu cheese or special sauce. We got one hot and one regular, but the chicken is HUGE and two adults can easily share one sandwich. I'm torn, because while we would probably order just one sandwich next time, I also want to support the business and get two. The chicken was as good as everyone told us and had incredible crispy batter. The fries though...those were maybe the best I've ever had. I don't normally love the double cooked style fry, but could live off those and never get tired of them. What did I order? - Mikes Huli Chicken Plate $17: 4/5 Stars - Chicken is a nice half chicken portion, perfectly juicy, nicely slight char taste. Crispy skin? I got the #9 plate, which is kalua pork, huli chicken, and I got mac salad. The kalua pork meat itself was fine. Not gristly and not too fatty. However, barely any smoke taste to it and was fairly bland. The huli chicken didn't have crispy skin. It seemed lukewarm like it had been cooked a while earlier and was just sitting. The sauce is amazing and I do think it's delicious with the sauce. Rice was just rice. Meh. Even adding shoyu didn't add much flavor to it, to be honest. The mac salad is extremely bland. I don't know if they need to add some acid to the mayonnaise or more salt, but it was pasty and no flavor. I would honestly skip getting the mac salad next time and get regular salad! That's how bad this mac salad was. Two slices of pineapple on the plate were fresh and flavorful. I did enjoy these. Service was okay. I had asked if they still honored kama'aina discount and was told no. That's fine; I understand not all places offer discounts. I don't know when kama'aina discount stopped being offered, but back in the day I used to receive it when asking. I did notice though that two guys who ordered before me got a "mahalo, braddah" in a friendly tone but I got a terse "thanks." Guess haole girls don't get mahalos even if local. It's just uncomfortable when certain people get friendly, effusive mahalos and others get terse thanks, like I didn't want to be serving you food today. Maybe cause it was Mother's Day and they didn't want to be there? Sure didn't feel like 'ohana today. So many flies around, it made eating uncomfortable. A few fly fans on tables but not at the one where I was seated, so it was basically like constantly shooing away flies and trying to take a bite of food super fast before they came back on my food. Probably I should have taken my food away and gone to the beer garden nearby with fewer flies. Meh. I used to really like Mike's but I will stick to Da Bald Guy and Seven Brothers when I visit the sugar mill in the future.
