Should not expected anything, but did to to at least smell and taste appetizing. Wife got the menudo and said it smelled like rubber. I had carna asada with chicken tamale and the tamale was really dry and the carne asada was a little bitter. The flour tortillas were very good though. Service was just ok. Like others have said, the salsa did not have tomatoes in it, it was more like a cold tomato soup with bits of onion and cilantro in it. Don't waste your money!! read more

I hadn't visited Guads in a couple of years due to poor quality food back then. I thought I'd give them another try. Overall the food was much improved over the previous visit, wait staff was efficient but not friendly. Obviously not real happy working there. The food was so good I went back the following week. Food was good, different wait staff, same result. Did her job but wasn't friendly at all. She did stop to talk to a friend/customer that arrived 10 minutes after we did and immediately took her order while we were still waiting. They were obviously friends. They need new faces in the wait staff area. Get friendly staff, it makes a big difference in the overall experience. read more

Going in we knew this was not going to even be close to the "Mexican food" we were used to in Texas, but we were tired and it was within walking distance of our hotel so we gave it a shot. The staff was nice and they worked hard, but the food was nothing like what we loosely call Mexican food, or really what is Tex-Mex. They claim Authentic Mexican food. I have spent a lot of time in Mexico, deep into Mexico, and this is very different, but I digress. We had a group of 10 and were seated immediately. The chips were good and crispy but not warmed, the salsa was watered down and had little to no flavor for my taste. Yes, I know what I am used to and I am picky about salsa, but picante out of a jar would have been an improvement. One of the guys ordered some kind of seafood dish- when it came out it looked like a hodge-podge of leftover seafood chunks in some kind of soupy sauce. I tried it, because I felt like living on the edge, and it was not very good. He didn't eat it...... I ordered beef enchiladas. I wasn't expecting much, which was good because that is what it delivered. The beans were ok as was the rice. I have never seen this dish topped with black olives, I like black olives, but would have preferred jalapenos or onions as the garnish. It really depends on what you are used to. Again, this is South Dakota's version of Mexican food, or Tex-Mex. We knew it would likely not be up to par with our local places but it was edible and we had a good time while we were in there. I wanted to give this place more stars, but I just couldn't, for my taste. They were very friendly and provided great service. I think they serve breakfast so maybe we will try that next time, but we will skip dinner. read more

Not only was the food subpar but the staff don't seem to care about customer service. We had the "curvy" waitress. She never came back to check on our food quality, which was terrible. They cover everything in cheese to mask the blandness. The plate had the right items, the correct look of items and was hot. But that was it. Zero flavor. Zero spices were used. Not even salt or pepper, much less cumin, garlic or chili powder. We should've known better than to even attempt this restaurant. Tip for owners: do some research about what you are serving. And don't say your clientele doesn't care for the traditional Mexican spices. They don't know better. But you should. Buy the meats pre-seasoned if you have to. After reading the reviews we were a little hesitant about trying this place, but there's just not that many options in Pierre. Well, let me say I was very impressed! The place was bustling and the staff was friendly and attentive. We were seated with nice thin and crispy chips and ice water. The salsa was a little different than back home, but we are in South Dakota, you know. The menu was extensive and the food came out hot and fast. The dinner plate was large, most everything came with rice and beans, and our food was delicious. We thought the restaurant was clean, decorated appropriately, and well run. My wife ordered the sizzling fajitas and I ordered a combo meal with a chicken enchilada and a Chile reLeno. The sizzling fajitas were swimming in cooking oil. The chicken in my enchilada was dried out and smothered with melted cheese. The chile relleno was a complete mess being covered with a giant glob of melted Mexican cheese. This must be a terrible joke... We stopped in here while on our way to the Badlands. We figured Mexican would be safe. It wasn't terrible here, but man it was pathetic. Now beggars can't be choosers, and since we were all starving, we appreciated hot food served by a cute waitress. The water boy was hilarious. The place was stifling hot and someone didn't get the memo about turning on the AC. I didn't care as I like the temperature to be 80F all year round. Well, the food was good, but they were understaffed for our group of 24. I can't really blame them for that, though... What I will gig them on is the fact that the Yelp listing states "Full Bar", but the truth is that they serve beer and wine only, and make some weird "wine based" drinks they called margaritas. Word of advice: If it has tequila in it, you can call it a margarita, but if it has wine, I think it's supposed to be called sangria! read more

I've read the reviews and most of them are positive. It's obvious most people don't know what "authentic " actually means. I've been to this restaurant several times, and each time I've walked away disappointed. I'm used to Mexican food from New Mexico. Best stuff on the planet. I don't think I'll come back to this place. Get better food at Taco Johns and that place is as bad as it gets. If you ever go to or through New Mexico, try the huevos rancheros there. Eggs with beans and potatoes on the side (rice is only for lunch and dinner) smothered in delicious green chili. And thick homemade flour tortillas that don't smell like insides of your sneakers. I had lunch here once and take out a few times here on my stay in Peirre SD. Take out you don't get free chips and salsa. :( There queso is really good. The salsa is not hot @ all it taste like pasta sauce. lol... I asked for the mild and hot mixed together so it would be real mild in my opinion mild is a little hot. In fact, as we got in car I said, "You generally can't go wrong with Mexican food so let's go to Guadalajara's. The Chips were good. The salsa is below average and watery. Staff is friendly and once we ordered the food came about 5 minutes later. Food was bland. I had 2 tacos and chicken enchilada. The best flavor in the plate was from the refried beans. I liked this place. I had the "Camerones Monterey"...which are bacon wrapped shrimp, with peppers and onions in a white cream sauce... served fajita style. It was great! I saw this dish on a table next to me when I was seated and had to have it. I've heard the fajitas are good, and quite popular. The "ultimate" burrito looked great too. With melted cheese that looked like it came out of a bag from the grocery store. Cheap tasting ingredients, and sub par salsa. While the food was not "gross" per se... This is a favorite place to go for my husband and I. However, tonight I decided to try something new and I ordered the Guadalajara burrito. I am allergic to avocado, so I checked the menu and it was listed as a garnish, so I ordered it. It turns out that the burrito is stuffed with avocado. I couldn't eat it. Not because I am picky, but because I am allergic. The waitress went and got the menu to show me where avocado was listed and then she and I did not agree what garnish meant.
