I went to the Gualala Bakery twice this week on a recent pleasure trip to the Mendocino Coast. It was within walking distance of my hotel and is located next to the larger grocery store, and they are open early, which is why I chose this place. Excellent customer service and the young woman who made my triple shot mocha both mornings did an excellent job. I also had a cream cheese pastry one morning and a breakfast croissant the next and they were very good. Their pan dulce is huge and I will try it next time. We got delicious breakfast burritos (the ones with potatoes), hot chocolate, and two baked goods. All were superb! My morning sticky bun with pecans on top was simply the most luscious and fluffy thing I've ever put in my mouth. My husband loved his giant chocolate chip cookie. Usually Liliana's enchiladas suizas are mild, and I just thought maybe that's how Gualalans like their Mexican food. They were so good, I didn't want to question the cook, so I never asked for more spice. Tonight's enchiladas were a spicy, hot surprise! I smiled and sweated and felt like I was home in the East Bay, they were so good! Not only is Liliana kind (she patiently tolerated my attempts to speak Spanish with her, like some entitled white woman from Healdsburg), but her enchiladas suizas are also the only splurge I ever indulge eating out here (my job makes me have to be pretty frugal). Good stuff: food was fresh and tasty. Cashier was nice. Bad: the cook brought out our food. We started eating. He came back and said we had the wrong order - blaming us for eating what he gave us. Then proceeded to take an uneaten bagel off our table to give to someone else! He didn't know if we touched it (we hadn't) but I feel sorry for the person who got it. This morning I got coffee for the second time at Gualala Bakery and sampled their new Mexican pastry made by hand in the shop. Straight out of the oven, had a great texture and was not nearly as sweet as many breakfast offerings. I loved it! When you are in Gualala, you should definitely stop by! read more

Great place for coffee, but the food is less than satisfactory. I had a chorizo and egg plate and he had a breakfast burrito with no flavor. However, it' the only place in town open for breakfast at 6 AM. Your choices are slim until until 7 or 8 in the morning. They do offer eclairs and donuts, which will satisfy a sweet tooth. Don't eat here unless you want to get energy and don't care about flavor, because you are still half asleep. According to my partner, he says the pizza isn't that great either. He prefers Upper Crust for pizza. They do have wifi and plenty of seating. At the very least, you can sip on coffee and surf the web. read more

I saw this place in a general store I stopped into on a road trip. They served pizza, burgers, Mexican food, and had a bakery. Which isn't a great sign. It's like going on a date with someone who owns 4 different kinds of pets. But I saw a pastry that looked delicious and decided I had to have it. Judging by the lack of enthusiasm of the girl at the counter, I assume she was a family member. But I found her surly honesty kind of charming. I asked her about a blueberry cheese danish that caught my eye and she said she didn't like it cause she doesn't like cheese. I asked what she did like and she said and she said the bear claw. So to be safe, I got both. On the way to the car I took a quick bite of the blueberry cheese and wow it was tasty. It was as good as it looked if not better. 16 steps later it was gone. It was so good I had to go back inside to try the mexican food they serve, which ended up being ok. The bear claw wasn't nearly as good as the danish, but it wasn't bad. I was pleasantly surprised and it looked like it was owned and operated by a family which is nice. read more

We have been to this place for pizza on several occasions and the pizza is almost always cold and or old. We seem to get the impression from these people that if you don't like it, Too Bad. They make 3 pizzas in the morning and sell the slices off it all day! Don't bother going here as all the other food is over priced as well. The staff could be friendlier too. read more

Mediocre bakery / pizza / Mexican place. Grumpy mom will scowl at you as she begrudgingly takes your order. Everything is canned, reheated, and old. We bought cheesecake for $5.50 a slice and it looked ok. It was freezer burned and old. Called grumpy son and explained that the cheesecake was bad. He said with a hostile tone "ok". Not one bit of effort or care. I am not a troll and I would never bad mouth a small business for no reason. My burrito was half way decent. I highly recommend they get personalities here. The pastries look thick and unappealing. I have not purchased any but they are baked daily. I do stop to get coffee and/lattés fairly regularly and they charge $1.00 if you use your card which I am certain is not legal. read more

A Gold Mine of a Bakery! We walked in while on a hunt for some Coffee because our hotel didn't put any K cups in our room the 1st night. Blah Blah we like taking a morning walk anyway. This bakery is to the right of Gualala Grocery...I'm not sure if they are connected or not. We found a woman behind the counter in the kitchen kneading dough old style with her bare hands. No machine. We were immediately impressed. We asked if she made all the beautiful pastries behind the counter and she said she did. All herself. How could we resist getting a variety of homemade pastries? We got about 4 different types of pastry, and sat at one of the tables with our coffee's and pigged out. Everything was absolutely delicious and warm. As if everything was right out of the oven. We would have eaten more but didn't want it glued to our waists. This is a must try! read more

Hubby had chorizo and egg tacos for breakfast. He said they were real good! We ordered dinner plates tonight - 1 canitas and 1 chicken. It comes with the meat, refried beans, rice, a little salad with guacamole, and 3 large corn tortillas. Food was real good. We had a very good cinnamon braid yesterday and cherry cheese cake tonight was excellent! Food is take out but that was fine since we took it back to eat at the hotel. This little bakery is pretty hidden out of sight in a tiny strip mall, but it's worth the hunt because what you find inside is pure treasure (and culinary pleasure)! The Gualala Bakery creates the most scrumptious treats, my favorite is the house-made eclair which is FULL of rich custard inside the fluffy dough. We have a home in the area and so we have stopped in a couple of times to try different things. Mexican food and pastries are so-so. What surprised us is that they are a bakery that doesn't have ready made cakes. The young lady behind the counter (who seemed like she'd rather watch paint dry than help us) said you have to place an order for cake...any cake. Not just birthday cake or something with writing on it - but any kind of cake at all. Red velvet, German chocolate, carrot, white or chocolate, doesn't matter- no cakes. The only other option we found was an expensive $43 round cake at Trinks. So beware- if you need a cake, order ahead. read more

Worst experience at a bakery ever. I have no idea how they make the items look so beautiful but then taste completely inedible. I got a red velvet cupcake and the frosting tasted like gelatin/crisco literally - with nothing else: I spit it out. Four years ago when we were married in gualala, we ordered cream puffs and eclair's instead of a traditional wedding cake. Extremely fairly priced and sooooo good., they did a fabulous job.
