They sent out another technician (Blake) who had a device that allowed him to locate the leak. It was in the cooling system and the unit needed to be replaced. The next day they found the cooling system was under warranty, located a system locally and then installed it. They gave me a quote for the labor which the warranty did not cover. Matt came out that evening and installed the new cooling system. All three technicians were outstanding and knowledgeable and were courteous and did their jobs. Matt who installed the new system was the best technician I have ever seen. Great company with great employees. They did not try to upsell you on anything and even their office researched and found and coordinated the warranty process for us. Our a/c unit was only two years old in a new build house.

My wife contacted Sears Heating and Cooling (SHC), after I noticed that our AC was leaking. The…read moretech diagnosed the problem as a sludge build up in our discharge drain. In order to clean our discharge drain he cut the pvc. The tech then used a coupling after flushing out the drain line. I noticed that he did not glue the coupling so I asked him to do so. He indicated that it was acceptable to leave the coupling unglued, which gave me pause, so I proceeded to put a paper towel under the coupling so that I could detect a leak. The tech then agreed to glue the coupling after, he noticed me with the paper towel. As he tried to remove the coupling to apply the glue, the tech broke the p-trap. About an hour later, (after he went to the SHC shop for parts), the trap was replaced, everything was glued, and both of us were upset. I contacted the tech's supervisor the next day, and she defended the practice of not gluing the coupling. To appease my concerns, the supervisor, scheduled a lead tech to come to my house to review the work of the first tech. When the lead tech arrived, I explained my issue, and he also agreed that the coupling should not be glued. He took exception to my point that something as simple as not gluing the coupling, in my mind, suggests that other corners are being cut. After he completed the work, my wife contacted the supervisor again, and she indicated that the lead tech found my actions to be confrontational, and thus, he requested to not be dispatched to our condo again. My concern is that SHC is not following Ohio Code on servicing drain lines which states: While standard joints cannot be left loose or unglued (which risks water leaks, property damage, or air suction break in the trap), the code requires that traps and drain setups allow for cleaning and clearing blockages. To stay code-compliant while keeping the line serviceable, installers use a threaded cleanout cap(which remains unglued on purpose so it can be unscrewed) or a PVC union rather than leaving regular pipe joints dry-fit and unglued. In addition to using a threaded union, I recommend a 3/4 Fernco, and the lead tech dismissed the idea as a more expensive option than just cutting the pvc and dry fitting a coupling. If SHC is not following the code, admittedly/ intentionally, on something so simple, where else are they committing more egregious infractions?
