I arrived before my friends and felt like a warm cup of coffee. But the waitress told me the coffee is not from Guatemala. I was surprised so I skipped it. I ordered a plantain atol. It was tasty. A small size is plenty because it's thick and it filled me up. After my friends settled in we ordered our food. I ordered the pache, or a potato tamal. The waitress said it's vegetarian. Later she came to the table and told me there's a piece of chicken in the tamale. I was disappointed and looked for the piece of chicken to remove it. The tamale comes on a banana leaf and it's delicious. It's big and quite filling. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. There is a small market inside with Guatemalan trinkets. I've never been to Guatemala before but if the food there tastes as amazing as it does here, I just might have to book that flight. This is not a place to come to if you're looking for Texas-sized portions, but the flavors certainly pack a punch. The customer service is great, feels like you're visiting an aunts house. The waiters serve you as if there were no room for nonsense just great food. I actually like that, no false or fake conversations. Holy cow, I didn't know Guatemalan food was so dang good. So my mom and I have a shopping/pedicure session at least every other week. We often pass this restaurant on Saturdays, and finally decided to try it. And boy am I glad we did. This place is seriously one of the best restaurants in Houston. It is packed on the weekends, and when you try the food, you'll know why. I've had the fried shrimp plate which was fantastic, and the beef fajita plate which was excellent as well. They also have amazing fruit smoothies, and great tasty soups. I haven't had anything here I didn't love. If you haven't been here, go now! read more

While my Tico, or Guatemalan, friend thought the food was a bit bland for the lack of heat, he still likes the place - and I can see why. The entrees were good (pepian chicken is popular here), but I think going all out on tapas may be the best thing to do here as the entrees is half-starch (mostly rice and maybe potatoes). I took my two children adopted from Guatemala for Sunday brunch today. They are 8 and 9 and it was our first trip. We really enjoyed ourselves. The food is a very homestyle Guatemalan cooking, very similar to what I ate there, with maybe a bit more salt then I experienced in Guatemala (American influence perhaps?). Guatemalan food is very different then Mexican type foods. It really is mellow. The foods I ate in Guatemala was under salted to my american taste, but still loved it. This place did what I saw many authentic places do, put red pepper on the tables (or sometimes hot sauce). I didn't like the plantains, they were much more sweet and oily then what I enjoyed in Guatemala. But the chicken and rice, soup, breakfast (beans, sour cream, beef, eggs), tamales were great. They had some "kid foods" (corn dog, chicken nuggets, etc) on the kids menu, which suited my less adventurous son. My daughter tried and enjoyed everything, especially the soup. Inside was clean and comfortable with modest Guatemalan decoration. The staff was very polite and attentive. I let them know my Spanish isn't good and they helped me a lot. We felt welcome. I was likely the only non-Guatemalan person in the full restaurant, but didn't get stared at too much. It looked as if many people came in for a family meal after church and was pretty full at around noon on Sunday. I really felt like I was back in Guatemala today. read more

I spent a about 6 weeks in Guatemala, and I've been trying to find a restaurant in Houston that would bring me back to that time in my life. This is the place! We ordered a bean tostada, pepian (chicken pepian with veggies and rice), caldo De gallina (hen soup with salad and rice) and a side of plantains. For drinks we had the atol De platano and the atol De elote (hot plantain and corn drink) The pepian was delicious! The gravy was so tasty I wish I had more! The caldo De gallina was OK. The chicken was a little under seasoned...definitely not as flavorful as the pepian for my taste, but other than that it was delicious. The hot drinks were perfect for this cold day. But the star of the dinner was the tostada. Omgoodness. That is what brought me back. To having Guatemalan street food. You have to get one!! Went yesterday for lunch with 6 co-workers. This place is as authentic as it gets. It felt like I was in another world down in Guatamala City for the hour-long lunch! Felt like a short getaway from the insanity that is sometimes Houston. I would also add, similar to Antony below, that this is more of a $$ than a $ spot. Service - 5/5. Very friendly wait staff, and the manager came and personally addressed us, asking how we heard about them (yelp) and how our experience was. Food - 4.5/5. I ordered the Churrasco steak ($11.95 at lunch), which came with a side of rice, a small sala, and a charred green onion. On the side you get to choose house-made tortillas, or (3) grilled tamales (no filling, just the tamale dough). I got the grilled tamales to try something new, and they were very interesting, in a good way. They were slightly charred, which enhanced the flavor and it was a great pairing to the churrasco steak, which was in its own category of flavor. Absolutely delicious food coming out of the kitchen here. Beverages - 4.5/5. The only reason this is not a 5 is due to the lack of detail on the menu for their beverages. They have fresh squeezed fruit juice of almost every type. I got a pineapple juice, and chose the small, which is actually a 20 oz. water cup with ice and pineapple juice. It was $2.99, which is reasonable for a fresh-squeezed juice in my opinion. Overall 5/5. This is a hidden gem of authentic Guatemalan cuisine in a city that seems to have it all. I would recommend going out of your way for this place any day of the week. read more

So authentic!! My Guatemalan friend brought me here yesterday because she said she was missing her mom's cooking. I ordered an horchata and the beef tongue plate. The tongue was friend with an egg batter and was crispy but soft enough to cut with a fork. Now, it was definitely different from the lengua that I'm used to, which is mainly in tacos and sopes, prepared Mexican style. I still enjoyed it and thought it was flavorful. This food supposed to be a stuffed bell pepper but what I got instead was like a quarter or less of a bell pepper that was floured and fried. We ordered the beef enchilada, chicken tostada, plantains, and the Churassco entrée with Jamaica juice. Everything was delicious! My mother is a light eater and will usually eat half of what she orders and saves the rest for later. Not this time!
