    Potato tamal
    Maria S.

I arrived before my friends and felt like a warm cup of coffee. But the waitress told me the coffee is not from Guatemala. I was surprised so I skipped it. I ordered a plantain atol. It was tasty. A small size is plenty because it's thick and it filled me up. After my friends settled in we ordered our food. I ordered the pache, or a potato tamal. The waitress said it's vegetarian. Later she came to the table and told me there's a piece of chicken in the tamale. I was disappointed and looked for the piece of chicken to remove it. The tamale comes on a banana leaf and it's delicious. It's big and quite filling. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. There is a small market inside with Guatemalan trinkets. The place is pretty authentic. Lots of Guatemalans were dining there on a Saturday at lunch. I would like to go back to try the plantain stuffed with black beans.

The food is delicious. Everyone was so gracious because I don't speak Spanish & helped me order. They have English right under the Spanish on the menu, which is so helpful. The ambiance was on point, I felt like I was in Guatemala. Excellent food! Great service!

The food here left me very disappointed and unsatisfied , I think the Guatemalan food wasn't being represented fairly and the plátanos from here were very cold and flavorless as well. Only thing I actually liked from here was the chuchitos. Service was good and waitresses were nice but it was veryyy expensive.

Scuse me sir, could you spare a DOLLAR I'm broke, I'm cold, I'm living in SQUALOR My male bits are getting SMALLER I was a call boy but now there's no CALLER I'll use it to buy the MP3 of SWALLA I'll play it for my friend who I know from HIZBALLAH His name's Abdul but I'd rather have PAULA And we'll see what we can do to honour ALLAH We'll get a place together down in OCALA I'll cook him Mapo Tofu and Chana MASALA I'll be his hollaback girl if he'll HOLLA And like Ashlee Simpson, he'll make me wanna LALA We'll make an annual trip to attend VALHALLA We'll drive across Nebraska and stop at OGALLALLA We'll go to Houston to meet friends from LA JOLLA And I'll take them for the best meal at GUATEMALA GUAT This restaurant was definitely one of the highlights of my many mini food tours of Houston. Say "My Many Mini Food Tours" 10 times very fast. Better still say "My Many Mini Mani Pedis" 10 times fast. While I don't go back regularly, that is largely because the food is not healthy, rather than not good. It's truly delicious. Some of the best I've had in Houston. I don't care Guat anyone else says - I love this stuff. Try the insanely good churrasco, the wonderful pepian chicken, and the yummy Elote drink. The Platano drink is just okay, and the Horchata isn't great. The service is absolutely wonderful. Lovely people cooking up delicious homestyle Comida Centroamericana. I definitely recommend you come here and try the sublime delights of Guatemalan cuisine. And if you want to also try some Guatemalan fashion, go to the Guate-mall. And if you want to see a really interesting Robin Williams movie about Guatemala, check out "Guat Dreams May Come." And as my Latina gf, my Guatemalan 2 bfs, and about 13 trans-sexuals can confirm (or not), "Guat Happens In Houston, Stays In Houston."

I've never been to Guatemala before but if the food there tastes as amazing as it does here, I just might have to book that flight. This is not a place to come to if you're looking for Texas-sized portions, but the flavors certainly pack a punch. The customer service is great, feels like you're visiting an aunts house. The waiters serve you as if there were no room for nonsense just great food. I actually like that, no false or fake conversations. There is a cute little shopping area by the register to get a few Guatemalan goodies if you wanted.

I took my two children adopted from Guatemala for Sunday brunch today. They are 8 and 9 and it was our first trip. We really enjoyed ourselves. The food is a very homestyle Guatemalan cooking, very similar to what I ate there, with maybe a bit more salt then I experienced in Guatemala (American influence perhaps?). Guatemalan food is very different then Mexican type foods. It really is mellow. The foods I ate in Guatemala was under salted to my american taste, but still loved it. This place did what I saw many authentic places do, put red pepper on the tables (or sometimes hot sauce). I didn't like the plantains, they were much more sweet and oily then what I enjoyed in Guatemala. But the chicken and rice, soup, breakfast (beans, sour cream, beef, eggs), tamales were great. They had some "kid foods" (corn dog, chicken nuggets, etc) on the kids menu, which suited my less adventurous son. My daughter tried and enjoyed everything, especially the soup. Inside was clean and comfortable with modest Guatemalan decoration. The staff was very polite and attentive. I let them know my Spanish isn't good and they helped me a lot. We felt welcome. I was likely the only non-Guatemalan person in the full restaurant, but didn't get stared at too much. It looked as if many people came in for a family meal after church and was pretty full at around noon on Sunday. I really felt like I was back in Guatemala today.

They serve decent Guatemala dishes all day long. We are well welcomed every time we come in as they do recognize our face. I would not say all their dishes are in $ but more like in $$ range. Still, their good food keeps us coming back for more.

    Caldo de gallina

I spent a about 6 weeks in Guatemala, and I've been trying to find a restaurant in Houston that would bring me back to that time in my life. This is the place! We ordered a bean tostada, pepian (chicken pepian with veggies and rice), caldo De gallina (hen soup with salad and rice) and a side of plantains. For drinks we had the atol De platano and the atol De elote (hot plantain and corn drink) The pepian was delicious! The gravy was so tasty I wish I had more! The caldo De gallina was OK. The chicken was a little under seasoned...definitely not as flavorful as the pepian for my taste, but other than that it was delicious. The hot drinks were perfect for this cold day. But the star of the dinner was the tostada. Omgoodness. That is what brought me back. To having Guatemalan street food. You have to get one!! Overall I would be back to try more of the menu.

In the…read morelast couple of years since moving from NYI, I haven't found many legit Venezuelan options until recently here at Sabor Venezolano. I'm pleased to report that the food lives up to the name and most everything was quite sabroso and very Venezuelan. The place is bigger than it looks from the outside, but seating is really limited to solo diners and small groups. There are counter seats toward the back and small cafe tables in the front. There are some refrigerated items for grab and go while ordering is done at the counter. I'd recommend calling ahead of time for faster pickup. If you're able to order in Spanish, do it. The food gets a thumbs up. Much of the menu is Venezuelan specific which includes cachapas, arepas, tumbarachos, patacondes, and tequeños. While they have a "menú Mexicano" that features quesadillas, tacos, burritos, and tortas, I'd avoid it if at all possible. The arepas might appear to be smaller, but they're packed. I personally loved their jamón y queso guayanés, in which the latter is a thick slab of gooey cheese. A similar arepa is their mechada y queso guayanés, which is equally tasty and I appreciate that they have cazón (#1) as an option. The pelua (beef + cheese) and reina (shredded chicken with avocado) will be my perpetual favorites and the cachapas with tequeños are also particularly hearty. The food is a bit pricier than most Venezuelan fare I've had previously, foodflation never surprises me anymore. Given how often I'm in the neighborhood, I already know that I'll be here more often than not. __________ (#1) Nothing like a little shark to get your day started.

Ambiance is an ethnic strip mall restaurant, with Latin flavor. Salsa music playing, people coming and going is it what is. I'm a fan.
