MIL got panza aka stomach in sauce with rice and beans with tortillas. ( this dish had an ok portion) My hubby got fried bamboo shoot with sauce with rice beans and bread. (Only came with one) Hubby also got some fried plantains on the side. ( for almost 5 bucks) I got chicharron with rice beans and tortillas. ( only comes with 2 tiny pieces) They give very small portions lol felt like a toddler portion lol. I mean rice and beans don't cost much so I don't understand why they were being so extremely skimpy on the main dish portions. So usually my plate i ordered comes with only 2 tiny pieces of chicharron and I mean super small. The nice lady serving us gave me 3 because she knew that I'm a big girl and I needed more lol. Which i really appreciated but even 3 tiny pieces wasn't enough for the price. The food was ok but you should never leave a restaurant feeling ripped off and still hungry. The atmosphere was inviting even had authentic Guatemalan music being sang by a nice gentleman. It was really nice. We also got a few pastries they were ok. Everything was a little overpriced in my opinion especially for the portions given. Most definitely won't be returning and 3 stars is me being generous. It's more like 2 to 2 and half stars. The food here is really good. If you're Guatemalan or like Guatemalan food you know it's not easy to find a good Guatemalan restaurant. I really like the chile rellenos en pan. Of course if you make them at home they taste better but this is pretty good if you're having cravings and you're too lazy to cook at home! The menu is in English and Spanish and the ladies here are really nice if you're feeling a little lost or don't know what's what. They had live music when I went but I'm not sure if they do that everyday or just on the weekends. There's also a market inside if you just want to buy groceries, snacks, pan, or drinks! Poor customer service. Walked to no line. Two younger girls behind the counter. No acknowledgment. Just doing their thing. One literally stood in front of us twice to refill the food station without even looking up to say they'd be with us soon. The other one helped someone that walked up to the register after we had been waiting in line, looked at us, walked towards us and then walked away without saying anything. I normally love the this! The food is great, it's always clean and the service has been fine even when way busier. I'm blown away that with no one in line the service was this bad. Or better said, there was NO SERVICE! I got there right as they were opening and it felt like my tias and abuela was behind the counter cooking. They were so inviting. Everything was clean, open and enough seating. Ok so first off, this was my first time trying Guatemalan food and oh my goodness the flavor the textures and the inviting atmosphere just had me at the heart of Guatemala! They have tortillas hecho a mano (homemade tortillas) which complimented the food very nicely. It was like a small store that had a bunch of Guatemalan food and snacks. They were PACKED so I didn't really get to engage with the cashiers but they got everyone out in a reasonable time and were efficient about their work. Today was the first day it opened for business. I have traveled from Downey to their location in LA for years . Now that it's in Maywood I'm 10 minutes away . Okay so here goes the review Ambiance/Decor-their biggest restaurant and bakery yet. Love how it smells as soon as you walk in. You see a lively restaurant/bakery that has everything a Guatemalan loves . The decor was great lots of room to sit Food- I had the Revolcado stew . It was delicious a foodgasm for every spoon full. I also had a Chile relleno (meat base not cheese ) was also delicious but small. And I had the Pepian which was chicken in a sauce that is to die for . Also had the tostadas trio which was ok not stellar but still above average. Yes I had to taste and eat a little of everything . They have so many different dishes that are Guatemalan comfort food . Reminds me of my grandmothers cooking. Bakery- can leave with out having a cup of Guatemalan coffee best in the world . And a Guatemalan sweet bread Teo champuradas and a Gusanito. So delicious and the bread was great. Groceries- they have tons of Guatemalan products and delicacies that you won't find anywhere else from meats to fruit and dairy products . I went there for the first time on Friday with my bf, his mom and dad. I didn't know what to expect. When you walk in, you form a line and place your order. There is so much to choose from. The food, service is outstanding. The workers are super nice and patient. Especially when the line is almost out the door. Half of the place is restaurant and the other half is fresh baked sweets and breads made daily. They even gave a little mini market inside. I loved what I tried so much, That my bf and I went back today to order the black beans with rice, and their beef with potato in a tomato type of sauce. Always order extra tortillas. They finally opened a Guatemalan bakery closer to home. I used to drive to the one in LA for years. This location is bigger and newer. The bread is very fresh, food is just as delicious. My favorite is the black beans, plantains and cream plate. I also like they're white bean and pork stew and the meat and potatoes. They also have imported product such as plantain chips, cookies and Guatemalan fruit juices. They need a little extra of everything; it's more like an appetizer. Champurradas (crispy Guatemalan big cookies) are soooo good, dip them in your coffee and enjoy them Guatemalan style!
