    Signature sandwiches (08/2025)
    Lailah J.

Pittsfield, MA - popular with the local Berkshires crowd as there ain't a Trader Joe's here, and a great place to pick up picnic supplies on the way to Tanglewood, which is just 10 minutes away. If you're familiar with the Amish Market in NYC or health food grocery stores, it's much like that - with fresh produce, gourmet/organic/specialty groceries, bulk grains/nuts/coffee, respectable cheese and wine sections, deli and prepared foods, oven baked pizza, bakery, fresh meat & seafood counters, clean beauty & homeopathic products, and more. Sort of like a mini Whole Foods. We ordered some sandwiches which took a long time to make, but they were delicious. I forgot to take a photo but loved the Havana Gold which is a hot Cuban sandwich with pulled pork, ham, melted Swiss, and mustard & pickles on focaccia...yum! There are a lot of nice products here, and it's fun to browse. The prices are expectedly higher than the typical grocery store, but it's a good place to pick up some quality foods and snacks for your meals and picnics if you're in the area. Parking is as tight as a TJ's but the constant comings & goings means you can always find a spot.

    Guido's Italian Mouthful...details.
    Bob B.

We discovered Guido's when staying overnight at the Wagon Wheel motel down the street and we're sure glad we stopped in. The selection of food and other goods was plentiful, granted a bit pricy, like $15.99 lb. for Turkey Breast, and $8.99 loaves of bread, etc...but, these items are probably geared towards the highfalutin Lenox residents where $ is not an object...there was actually a ham that was $27.99 lb!, that should come with a personal chef to make the sandwich!...We have been to Guido's twice, the last time on a late Monday morning and the place was packed, so much so that we had to utilize the additional parking on the above lot. Due to the extensive foot traffic, the section in front of the deli was akin to riding the T after a Sox game, jammed...and it was a bit confusing when and where to order, but we figured it out. The busy staff behind the deli counter were working their tuchus's off, but were still very friendly in the midst of the chaos. We purchased the Italian Mouthful sandwich, which we split, it had plenty of meat (the anti-Subway sub) and a half was sufficiently filling for us both...the sandwich was delicious and reasonably priced at $12.99. BTW, they had a nice looking cheese section, with some crazy prices for the other half, but they did have a nice selection of samples, which I enjoyed, but they had no place to discard the toothpics...was I expected to carry them around with me?...C'mon Man! Checkout was fast, but the attitude of the cashier was not very cheery, actually a bit dismissive ( In fact I said "Thank You" after paying with no response and with minimal eye-contact. Also, although I had numerous items, I was never offered a bag or box to carry them outside with, hence I was juggling my purchases ...clearly at Guido's the customer is not king and a customer service seminar might be in order as I experienced this same lack of customer care on our first visit, which sadly leaves one with a bit of a sour taste going out the door and knocks Guido's down a star...too bad.

Also, running a loop of ads on the pumps is obnoxious, that's when I stopped getting gas there. 1-won't use the deli any longer. Don't trust the prepackaged deli because to many times the slices are to thick. I started getting my deli cut fresh, but sometimes didn't work out well. I asked for cheese sliced at 1 1/2 and when got home and it wasn't even close, other times the deli person showed me the slice which was ok. but after a few days the slices got bigger as I went through the pound of ham I ordered. 2- milk spoils even when the code has 7 days left ( I live less than 10 minutes from the store. 3- had to return boneless chicken twice in a matter of weeks because it was like rubber. 4- fill in holes with products that don't match the signs..ditto for blocking products in the aisles 5-some signs are deceiving, 1 sign looked like $2.99 but was actually $12.99, the 1 on 12.99 was in a dark blue border. 6-in the process of finding another pharmacy. Today around noon I was told that I wasn't next even after I said I was next. I was told the the white gentleman was next, when I and my wife watched him walk up. I am really hurt by this happening at a place that I have shopped at for many many years. I am really disappointed and will never shop there again. I am also going to share this on social media.

This happened to me on my first visit, but thankfully, the Customer Service Desk refunded my purchase, helped me sign up for their free membership, and reprocessed my checkout with the lower 'member' prices. It's a little puzzling why they require membership if it's free--likely to track purchases--but just a fair warning for newcomers to Big Y. Now, onto the main reason for my review: I'd heard great things about their fish and chips and had to try it. For around $13.99 plus tax, I received two large pieces of perfectly fried, steaming hot white fish, served over a bed of lukewarm fries. It came with a small side of coleslaw and tartar sauce--a solid deal. I also found out you can upgrade to onion rings at no extra charge (wish I'd spotted that option before ordering!). The gentleman who cooked up my meal was super nice and helpful. They offer a small dining area near the store's entrance where you can enjoy any of their ready-to-eat meals. While the space is basic, a staff member was keeping the tables clean between guests. Eating fish there did make me feel a bit self-conscious, as it filled the area with its aroma. Overall, I'd order the fish and chips again but I would probably ask to have them put a piece of 'wax paper' between the fish and fries.

But, the prices were good and there were a few products we could use, so I carried my 7 items to the checkout. Since I didn't have a bag, I figured I'd just carry them out. The cashier, after taking a bit too long to finish up her chat with the previous customer (when I and another woman were waiting), then rang up my items and placed them in the previous customer's now-empty cart (Note that I hadn't touched this cart or claimed it in any way). Then, as I was paying and getting ready to leave, she started to put the empty bag of the customer *behind* me in the cart, I guess to start packing it. I told her it wasn't my bag. Then she said "did you bring a cart in?" And I said no. She then proceeded to, basically, scold me "if you didn't bring a cart in, then you can't take one". I was so surprised I didn't say a word, just picked up my 7 items to carry out (as I'd planned to do anyway) and I grabbed a stray cardboard box that they seem to keep up front for this purpose. (Something she could have suggested, since by then it must have been clear I was new to Aldi and unfamiliar with its cart-managing practices). I wish I'd told her that SHE was the one who put my items in the empty cart, not me. Honestly, I didn't need the attitude, especially the scolding in front of the other customer. Plus, what's up with that policy anyway? A customer can't take an empty cart (that the previous person had left behind) out to the parking lot? I'm giving this Aldi 3 stars because there seemed to be some high quality items at good prices. But, I wish I could give it 1 star for service. I promise you this would never have happened at Trader Joe's! The staff there are, without exception, friendly, helpful, and kind. This person could probably use a refresher in customer service. Maybe the one who was rude to me in Aldi's is the same woman (with glasses) who waited on some of the other reviewers. (I gathered from some of these other Yelp reviews that you have to pay 25 cents to "rent" a cart...um, okay.....not something I'm at all accustomed to.)
